BBC Announce who have been Cast as the Villains
Cheers to Scoobie for the heads up.
© BBC Pictures
The BBC has announced today that Rupert Everett (Parade's End, Another Country) and Matthew McNulty (Jamaica Inn, The Mill) will join the cast of the third series of BBC One drama The Musketeers.
Everett will play Philippe Achille, Marquis de Feron, the corrupt Governor of Paris, Head of the Red Guard and illegitimate brother to Louis XIII. McNulty joins the cast portraying Lucien Grimaud, a money lender and vicious criminal who clawed his way out of poverty and neglect. Both men go up against the Musketeers and bring chaos and sedition to the monarchy and Paris.
Speaking about the role, Rupert Everett says: "I'm very excited to be joining the cast of The Musketeers for the new series. I love the show and am really looking forward to working with the team."
Everett and McNulty join returning cast Luke Pasqualino as d’Artagnan, Tom Burke as Athos, Howard Charles as Porthos, Santiago Cabrera as Aramis, Hugo Speer as Captain Treville, Ryan Gage as King Louis, Alexandra Dowling as Queen Anne and Tamla Kari as Constance.
Liam Keelan, Director of Scripted Content for BBC Worldwide says: “With an all-star cast and twists and turns throughout, series three of The Musketeers is shaping up to be a must-see for all its fans around the world.”
Hilary Martin, Head of BBC Drama North, says: “The third series of The Musketeers promises to be an ambitious and electric piece of drama. We are thrilled our lead writers Simon Ashford and Simon Allen's fantastic scripts have attracted such exceptionally high-calibre actors to join the Musketeers on their exciting journey through war-torn and politically turbulent 17th-century Paris.”
The Musketeers is made by BBC Drama Production North and co-produced by BBC Worldwide and BBC America. Jessica Pope is the BBC executive producer, Matthew Bird is producer and lead director is Andy Hay. The Musketeers series three was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, and Ben Stephenson, outgoing Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning.

I've been away the last few days so haven't been able to get the latest set photos up until now. Jessica Pope interviewed on Radio Suffolk
Jessica was interviewed today on Lesley Dolphin's afternoon show - thanks for the heads up Liz. You can find the interview by clicking here (you will obviously need to select the correct date if you are reading this after 30th April), and the interview starts at around 1 hour 7 1/2 minutes into the show. It's a lovely, informative chat covering subjects such as how the show came about, what Jessica's job involves and the county of Suffolk itself. There are also a few hints for next year which I will list below.
* A Parisian slum set has built for season three
* The guys are filming an escape from a monastery today
* No date is set for airing yet (no surprises there)
* As I announced earlier this afternoon, the two new lead villains will be announced on 12th/13th May
* S3 will be as complex as, and possibly a little more serialised than S2
* There will be moments of bromance as it's important, but it will be balanced with the drama
* The four year time jump is confirmed
* The guys all have two new costumes - one for battle and one for everyday Musketeer wear
First Set Photo Released
The BBC released the first set photo on the 27th which gave us a first look at Athos and Treville, while confirming that Andy Hay is directing the first block as we had suspected. The Minister for War has a new coat, and seems to have aged somewhat, looks like Louis is keeping him busy! Athos also has a beard, so I guess he will be wearing a false one for now. It appears they could be in the First Ministers room at the Louvre in the photo, although Treville's new office could also be set up very similarly with scrolls in the background.

Latest Update on S3 Villain
Jessica has confirmed that there will be more than one baddie this year. We haven't had much speculation on here about who the villain may be recently, though I know Vargas is a popular choice to return for many fans after his performance in the finale. Who would you like to see the Musketeers facing next year, and are there any actors you would like to appear in the show?

4th April - I hesitated about including this as I have no idea if it is actually related to the show at all. But as there isn't much to discuss as yet I decided to include it in the end. These are two photos from Howie's Instagram, the symbols appear to represent the flag of the Ottoman Empire and a sultan's tughra. Technically, the 1630s are a bit late for the involvement of the Ottoman Empire in the Thirty Year War, but there would certainly be members of it around in the regions that the show could be set in next season. Also, they were historically a major rival to the Hapsburg's for much of this period, which could see them being sympathetic to France in S3.

Thanks Sandi! And we're off! :D
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering when this thread will show up! I love that it's organized into categories this time, it will make it so much easier to read and follow.
ReplyDeleteAny ideas why filming is starting later this season - didn't it start early March last season? Will it run later into the year or is the plan for the season such that it will take less time to shoot?
Super excited :D
ReplyDeleteThanks! Keep us updated, I love this show so much! CAn't wait for season 3!!!
ReplyDeleteYeehah! Thanks Sandi can't wait to join in speculation and conversations for Season 3 :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandi!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandi - I fell asleep last night before it was posted! Really looking forward to joining in the speculation!
ReplyDeleteI saw those photos on Howie's Instagram yesterday, but hadn't got a clue what they were! I'll have to read up a bit more about that later. :))
Thanks for your efforts Sandi. I'm really looking forward to keeping up with all the news. Of course I wish the seasons were longer than 10 episodes, but they do pack a lot into those 10!
ReplyDeleteThe Musketeers season 3... ah, it sounds so good!
ReplyDeleteSandi, i like your idea based on the photographs - it may or may be significant, however i do hope the series ventures into different territory and therefore finds a better balance between the romantic side and the major events that are going to (hopefully) unfold this series.
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo, not long before S3 speculation can begin.. :)
ReplyDeleteWe got A LOT of S2 speculation wrong, lol, apart from perhaps Aramis & Anne.
We are indeed :)) I don't know how much we'll get in before filming starts, but hopefully there will some read through photos soon, there were some lovely ones last year.
ReplyDeleteThe collapsible headers should make the page load a lot quicker than the last one too, it did start to get very clunky last time, lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why it's starting a bit later, they started shooting on 7th April last year, which was a month later than S1 due to the weather being so bad in March over there. Perhaps they felt it was still a bit cold then, I remember the boot camp photos that came through looked very chilly, lol.
Hi there nerwen_aldarion, welcome to the Musketeers boards!
ReplyDeleteI've no idea if he's even out in Prague at the moment, possibly not as he'd probably post a photo about going? But I thought, what the heck, at least it's something to have a look into. It's something that would tie nicely into the show next year after all, and a bit of research into stuff like that is always interesting, lol.
ReplyDeleteWe kind of got Milady and Louis right too, not the affair as such, but them becoming close enough so he would pardon her so that Athos couldn't carry out his threat on her return to Paris. Also, Constance at court and being Anne's friend - from that one photo of Tamla's boots, lol.
ReplyDeleteWe also kind of got the end right too, though we were only joking at the time cos I don't we ever thought it would happen for real. We noticed a few photos without Santi, and some filming days he missed, so were saying he had left the Musketeers. If only we'd had faith in that prediction huh XD
Ah, it definitely gives us something to think about, even if it's not related to the Musketeers! I really do need to read up a bit more about the history of the war before season 3 starts. There's plenty of time during the hiatus! :))
ReplyDeleteYeah, I remember some people speculating that Aramis had left the Musketeers or that Porthos had resigned for much longer than just one episode once we learned about his father turning up. As if the Musketeers would ever fall out for longer than a few hours, lol..
ReplyDeleteCould it be because Tom is still filming War and Peace?
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be the first season of TM where I start following the spoilers from pre-production to the end of the season - excited yet impatient :p
ReplyDeleteLove the new pic. :)
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of correct speculation within that of his leaving being in the direction of a monastery, so we were on the right lines!
ReplyDeleteCan I just say it's great to already see new faces posting! I don't know if they're new readers or lurkers, but it's lovely to see names I've not seen before! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm with dchick81. This will be my first time to follow the season from pre-production. Going to be great fun! Love this page!
ReplyDeleteI have some trepidation over the guest cast this year. After the massive fanfare for Charlotte Salt, and the subsequently dismal reception and lack of pretty much any appreciation for the character, I feel like we have to take any crew/cast gushing over newbies with, excuse the pun, a pinch of salt. We've debated to death whether the Marguerite mess was the fault of the actress, the writing, or whoever spliced her scenes together into the final edit, but there were also a number of other actors who, while I'm sure they're fantastic people (and probably good actors, elsewhere), were heralded as a great casting coup but, imo, fizzled like damp squibs.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find interesting, looking back, is that the best received guests were the ones we didn't know in advance were even in it. People like Ed Stoppard and the guy playing Perales weren't announced, or if they were it wasn't very loudly, but produced very memorable characters I've seen nothing but compliments for. Another I've not seen mentioned in the positive column was De Foix, who I thought was brilliant in his few scenes, particularly when playing the chess game with Alvarez.
So who are we getting in S3, do you think? I'm wondering if they'll be more of the soldiery type, it being a war, therefore fewer political/domestic/courtly folks, and more physical characters? Is there likely to be room for new women? I don't mean in the romantic sense, but since S3 is likely to be a testosterone and blood and guts season, can they bring new females into the mix? I guess it depends if they've planned this year to have the action split between the battlefields and the court (let's hope not), or if they're planning to have the Musketeers in and out of Paris somehow and not have the various stories taking place in different parts of the country.
Hopefully we'll have news of this year's guests soon!
Here we go again! :) If anyone finds out anything about the crew's plans for June 4-6 (as in locations, etc.) I would be forever grateful as there's a chance I could actually visit the set on that weekend. Anyway, already missing the Musketeers!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandi!!This will be my first time to follow the speculation as well.I have been following the previews and discussions after the episodes, but never dared comment, but now i can't help it.Everybody here is just so nice!!
ReplyDeleteWelcome cristina - it's going to be fun during the hiatus! :)
ReplyDeleteI share your worries over the choice of guest stars. As you know, I absolutely loved Ed Stoppard (Lemay) and Will Keen (Perales) this season but had no love for Charlotte Salt (Marguerite). Let's hope that they make good choices this year with the guests. Perhaps, they may bring back some of the old guest stars.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there would be many complaints if Annabel Wallace made a reappearance, but it's unlikely now Athos and Milady are back in each other's heads again. Ninon was really a device to show us what a mess Athos was at that point when it came to women!
ReplyDeleteI liked Ninon too but I wonder if Annabel Wallace is busy with Peaky Blinders 3 anyway? I hope Vargas makes a return :))
ReplyDeleteI did loved Annabel Wallace and it would have been interesting to see her again, but agree it's unlikely we will see her now. I'm in favour of seeing Peter Sullivan (Vargas) as a regular figure in season 3, but again, not sure that will happen!
ReplyDeleteI'm defenitely hoping for the soldiery tipe.
ReplyDeleteIf this is going to be the last season, like probably is, i would be okay with less female guests.
One thing i wish for sure is more Musketeers, and i mean literally more of them around and a bit less Red Guards.
I can't stand her in Peaky Blinders, when i recognized her as Ninon i was in shock. (Ninon for life!)
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, Vargas must come back!
Yes! He's the one this year I'd really love to see again. He was great, very menacing and dangerously calm. He'd be a great adversary for the guys next year, and as we've already been introduced, they wouldn't have to waste half the flippin' season telling us who he is, like they did with Rochefort. I seriously hope S3 goes straight into it, and new characters get picked up along the way instead of being rammed down our necks every week and interrupting the momentum, in case we've forgotten who they are or why they're there. While Rochefort was a great character, FAR too much time was spent on him at the beginning, at the expense of time for the Musketeers.
ReplyDeleteI *much* prefer her as Ninon XD
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, that less time needs to be spent introducing the characters, just straight in to the drama and action.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, actually. I think he's the one character that's quite logical to bring back, now France is at war with Spain. He might get a bit of a pre-season smacking around by the Spanish king after the Rochefort fiasco, but he could very well make a return. He wouldn't need introducing either, which is a bonus.
ReplyDeleteThat would be another advantage of having him back - we already know who is he and what he's capable of, no need for him to twirl his Snidey Whiplash moustache lol
ReplyDeleteVery true, it would make sense with France now being at war with Spain. He is definitely a quality actor - he wasn't pantomime but had screen presence! He would definitely be a big asset to the show.
ReplyDeleteI'm positive about him.
ReplyDeleteIf he's going to be the personification of Spain, the next villain along war, it would be great since they already introduced him perfectly. I'm sure that if they had knew about Peter Capaldi in time, we could have saw Rochefort introduced like this too.
Thank you.I can't wait until the filming starts!! :)
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of Musketeers, they just never have anything to do! It would be good to have the regiment all fighting together, instead of our four boys out front and everyone else just there for the non-speaking, non-action paycheck. Let 'em fight! Also let 'em fight WELL, as so far they've come across as pretty inept any time they've actually had to raise a sword or fist. I hope we won't be looking at Athos and his mates single-handedly fighting and winning the war, 'cause that'd just be stupid. What next? Stopping a meteorite? Solving world hunger?!
ReplyDeletePlus his accent was SO cool. I loved it!
ReplyDeleteVery true - I think it would work very well!! It will be great for series 3 to jump straight into the action and drama, without needing a big introduction to any additional actors/actresses.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely accent, wasn't it! I just love episode 10 and having him in it is a bonus. Again, I haven't seen Peter Sullivan in anything else before, but will have to watch out for him now!
ReplyDeleteExactly! We know that our boys are the special ones, but it's like they keep Paris in check by themselves!
ReplyDeleteMe neither - I'm desperately missing The Musketeers! :(
ReplyDeleteA new character I'd like to meet is at least one of Constance's brothers. It would be interesting to see her interactions with someone in her family, someone who presumably hasn't had time yet to meet d'Artagnan, and may or may not approve of her marrying a soldier. The fact that no family was at the wedding may have been because it was rushed (wasn't it only about two days after?) and there was no time to tell them, or for all we know Constance didn't want to tell them and had planned to drop it on them in her own time. We know nothing about her relationship with them. Either way, it would be good to add a relative to the mix of her emotions, with worry for d'Artagnan, worry about the war, and trying to support Anne.
ReplyDeleteCan I say I hope Milady doesn't get throttled or have a noose around her neck again in S3? After the treatment she got from Rochefort and Catherine (and her history with Athos) she deserves a break on that score if she gets captured or in a tight spot😯
ReplyDeleteThe way he speaks and walks, like a guest and not a prisoner... i loved him.
ReplyDeleteHe acted like he was bummed and bored at the same time. xD
I totally agree - I keep thinking what would happen if one of Constance's brothers was at the front fighting with d'Artagnan. That would be quite interesting, but not sure whether they enlisted commoners to fight or whether it was only properly trained soldiers. Also, we don't know whether Constance's Mother or Father are still alive - that would be nice to see if they are still alive.
ReplyDeleteYes, leaning calmly against the wall while the Musketeers and Red Guards were scrapping on the stairs was so funny!
ReplyDeletelol she did, I hope the writers were listening XD
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see Milady continue on her road to redemption :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe a little backstory for Constance too? It wouldn't need to be a whole episode's worth, but maybe a bit of exposition - talking to Anne, maybe - about her background and how she came to marry Bonacieux might be a good addition to what we know of her.
ReplyDelete"Take your time Musketeers, i will be here, waiting and pretending not to be completely bored by useless french people"
ReplyDeleteMe too, she can keep her edginess on the way there... ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm still puzzled on what the heck is happened to her. :/
ReplyDeleteWhilst I think S3 needs to be more musketeers focussed, I would like to see better story lines for Constance - more realistic and not like the baby kidnap plot in episode 3. I'd love to know more about her past, but as you say, just in her interactions with Anne would be fine.
ReplyDeleteLess guests like Marguerite and more time for those kind of interactions would be much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to have a less 'political intrigue' plot for her, and just see her as a married woman with a husband away at war. There are so many avenues they could go with that, as well as her trying to support the Queen and even having more interactions with Treville, which I would LOVE, since they're both stuck in Paris while the men they love are fighting somewhere else. She doesn't need another life or death storyline, but maybe a more cerebral and emotional one, where she has moral dilemmas or disagreements with people (Anne? Treville?) that can finally shut up all those complaining she's too 'good'. She's not, and it's been explained ad nauseum how many times her halo has slipped. Plus there's also the possibility she could be pregnant at the start of the show, which would be another layer of emotions for her to deal with.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! Hopefully, they will concentrate now on the regular characters and less so on any guests they may introduce, such as we had with Marguerite this year, who didn't really add much to the show.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Justyna can smuggle one into her suitcase and bring one back for us, if she manages to get on set? Any one would do! ;)
ReplyDeleteMe too and we have a long way ahead, but when pictures from filming and spoilers start coming up it'll be a bit easier..and we can always rewatch!! ;)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely - I think just the fact she is newly married and her husband is fighting at the front line. She won't know whether he is alive or dead and is going to be extremely hard for her. There are so many good dramas, which I have seen in the past, where a husband has been off fighting and the wife is back home - so much emotion and anguish they could bring to that storyline. I'd like to see her pregnant and with a child...that would definitely bring about a change in d'Artagnan as well.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I wouldn't want her character to be shown to be flawed, just for the sake of adding drama, as in my eyes she has already shown herself to be human and make mistakes, as she had an affair. However, one thing I'd hope they would move away from, is the fact that she always seems to sense danger before anyone else does.
Can you imagine it! We'd all be fighting over them! ;)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely - I'd like to see her working in some way with Constance. The sarcastic humour that they would both bring to the mix would be thoroughly entertaining! ;)
ReplyDeleteYes indeedy. And Anne too in some way if possible; if you're fighting a war you'd definitely want these three girls on your side ;)
ReplyDeleteTotally, that would be a fun combination! Maybe, they can go undercover on some mission. ;)
ReplyDeleteI can't see any of them sitting at home darning leather trousers lol!
ReplyDeleteIt would be hilariously ironic if Constance was married to a draper but is absolutely terrible at sewing. ;)
ReplyDeleteHehe that would be funny!
ReplyDeleteI'm very much looking forward to that Geek Syndicate interview! Hopefully we should get some questions answered for series 3. This season's speculation should be fun and exciting especially since more people are getting involved - myself included. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd so... it begins...
ReplyDeleteAhh, it felt like only last month we were anxiously awaiting S2 news and now the wait is back! So glad we have posts like these to tide us over :-)
ReplyDeleteIsn't Justyna from Poland?
ReplyDeleteKnitty is only joking Katie ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd during shooting in Czech republic they 'live' in Prague?
ReplyDeleteSame here!
ReplyDeleteI believe Jessica has recieved a number of tweets / complaints about the amount of violence / implied sexual violence towards women in S2. I'm in two minds about this, on the one hand I think S2 did overdo violence towards women - especially Rochefort's strangulation of the prostitute and attempted strangulation ( twice ) of Milady, along with Margerite's suicide - but on the other hand, a lot of male characters are also the victims of violence ( the execution of the good hearted Dr Lemay being the most uncomfortable to watch ) and if viewers are going to be more upset about women being hurt or killed, do they have a place fighting alongside the Musketeers?
ReplyDeleteI don't think the Musketeers themselves recieved that many injuries in S2, even d'Artagnan being beaten up by Red Guards in episode 9 didn't seem to leave that many injuries to his face 24 hours later.
If Constance is now the baby's nanny, she won't be able to take off on missions without neglecting her main duty - though I know nothing's been confirmed about her taking on the role of nanny,
ReplyDeleteIn some ways, having Constance tied to Anne takes her AWAY from the more adventurous stuff, so I hope the producers have a clearer picture of what her role is in S3..
Yes, I've seen the open letter sent on Twitter. As this is more of a complaint about S2 rather than speculation of storylines in S3 I think it's best to move this conversation over to the G+ Community so we don't take this post off topic for now though. I'll make a post over there about it :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard cristina! Glad you've joined us :)
ReplyDeleteHope this isn't too off topic but Luke is appearing on ITV's Lorraine tomorrow :) no idea what he's promoting, if anything.
ReplyDeleteS3 may well come up though.
Cheers Sandi.. :)
ReplyDeleteMy wish-list is pretty simple, based on the fact that this may well be the last series and therefore a need for a good pace to be set:
ReplyDeleteI don't want too much time wasted on getting Aramis back- either he's already back or he is going to do his thing from the Abbey. I think in the second Oliver Reed film this was the case.
Hopefully if there are to be any new characters (eg. Duke of Buckingham. The supposition of this is based on Milady and going to England - this does make sense i guess), they hit the ground running and we don't have too long spent bedding them in, so to speak.
Where the female characters are included in the war setting - no silly storylines (getting them in fighting gear with swords, guns and fighting at the front, etc) this would make a nonsense of everything - it has to be kept in the bounds of reality.
Someone much earlier (on the other thread) mentioned a clear new boundary between Treville, Athos and the others. I hope they don't keep Treville at the garrison like before and it appears to the viewer like no change has taken place - that would appear a bit of a cop-out. Part of the possible storyline could involve the different personal situations each finds himself and their changing relationships with each other. Dartagnan has a new wife so his priorities extend beyond the 4.
And before anyone says "it's not on their website" Fiona Philips definately said his name and my Virgin box allowed me to rewind it back to make sure I'd heard correctly.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I definately agree that Treville and Athos's new statuses need to be reflected in the writing - no Treville constantly hanging around the Garrison and no Athos constantly hanging around his three favourite men.
ReplyDeleteI'm not too fussy about S3 - beyond having the Musketeers actually being at the forefront of the show again and a little more humour.
Plus, decent endings for everyone if S3 could be the last, especially for d'Artagnan - not just because he's my favourite Musketerr but because the show IS promoting him as becoming a legendry Musketeer. No half-hearted Merlin type ending for him.
That's very true! I just hope they have a clear vision of what her role is this year and write good storylines for her.
ReplyDeleteExcept, isn't the Duke of Buckingham quite famously dead by this point? Unless I'm thinking of a different Duke?
ReplyDeleteI believe you! It's not a name you can easily mishear!
ReplyDeleteThey need a nanny nobody sees and who has no part in events whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the history of this because i was going to ask where the English and Buckingham fitted in with the French war against Spain.
ReplyDeleteWould be good for the team to know at the beginning whether this was the end. The rest can be tied up appropriately. A baby to be born at the end for the happy couple would be great for all fans of the pair.
ReplyDeleteI know this series may be about 'the legendary' thing but i hope everybody is involved in making him become legendary and we don't get the others somewhat sidelined by it all. As you say, a good rounded 4 and humour sprinkled in amongst the other emotions.
I don't want Treville hanging around the garrison as before either and the relationship between Athos and rest would have to change for the whole story to be realistic. It ended with Treville letting them go and find Aramis as though he was still Captain - i can give the writers that but i hope it doesn't continue that way. Athos has to make his own decisions and as minister of war Treville's place would more likely be at the palace advising the King not leaning over the balcony as he has done up till now.
I don't know much about it, but I know the DoB was a close friend of Charles I and was assassinated in 1628. Charles had his own issues with Spain and during the 1620s (encouraged by DoB) tried to get money out of his parliament to wage a war. Didn't work, but there might be a connection there? Also Charles's queen was French. Lots of possibilities, I think! And Buckingham's death doesn't mean he can't appear here, given TM's historical flexibility with people and dates!
ReplyDeleteI think many people would like to see Athos especially develop an even stronger bond with d'Artagnan now that he's Captain, we had a few nice moments between them during the first half of S2 but that fizzled out during the second half, again not helped by having too many subplots going on - Marguerite etc.
ReplyDeleteDoes Athos have enough confidence in d'Art to send him off on a solitary mission? Will he have to get d'Artagnan to reign in that hot-headedness that was quite prominant in S2..
Yes, I agree that new boundaries that reflect different positions need to be drawn. Giving his sword to Porthos made it clear to me that Treville considers his fighting days to be over and that he knows his circumstances have changed now.
ReplyDeleteI would also like the female characters to have separate independent positions in season 3, not just as wives or lovers.
So curious how Athos will shape his new role. He can do it, but will he resent it? (I'm thinking of Pinon).
Finally, more Porthos please!
Thanks Sandi, I'll post over there :)
ReplyDeleteConstance barely spent any time with d'Artagnan in S2 - in any satisfying way, until the wedding - she was mostly attached to Anne.
ReplyDeleteI want to see a loving and supporting couple in S3, rather than the push / pull annoyance that was Constagnan of S2.
He trusted d'Art to get to de Fois on his own, and I think there's enough trust in him among the gang to ask him to do what would be asked of the others.
ReplyDeleteIf this is the last season, and they do intend Constance and d'Artagnan to have a family at some point, they don't need to have a season long pregnancy storyline to make it work. Even if she announced it in the last scene, I think that would satisfy and show us their future, without needing to distract from the main events or put us all through another flying-strawberry and bad hair birth scene.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he'd resent it, I think he'll be more concerned that he's worthy of the job. He left Pinon because of its memories and the pain he'd suffered there, and wanted to leave it behind him and look to the future. When he came back the last time it was to a job he'd chosen for himself, and a life and a brotherhood he was a part of and wanted to keep. As Treville reminded him, it was his duty, whether he felt ready for it or not, and I think he'll rise to the challenge brilliantly, once he's got it into his head that he DOES deserve it and has earned it. WIth the help of the others supporting him, I reckon he'll be fine. My only concern is the dynamic between the boys will have to change, now he's the Captain, but even in that I don't think it will be too problematic. They see him as the leader of their foursome anyway, so any issues will hopefully be managable and they can move on from them.
ReplyDeleteWhat I do think will happen is we'll see three, or maybe all four of them, becoming a bit less intertwined with the others because of all that was set up in S2. The brotherhood wil always be there, but with Athos as Captain, d'Artagnan married, and Aramis privately sparring with God over the state of his soul, they'll each have new paths to walk in which they won'tbe able to involve the others, whereas in S1 and 2 there wasn't so much indication of that. Of course they all had their own issues and personal problems to deal with then, but not as much as will be evident this year as they face their new futures and at the same time risk losing them because of the war.
I really hope that Athos being captain doesnt cause him to become detached or separate from the other 3 boys in series 3, I think the dart, aramis and porthos need him to keep their heads straight. He will obviously have more responsibility but the brotherhood bond from series 1 would be amazing to have back. The others will obviously also have their own side stories too (dartanians new marriage and adjusting to his first war, aramis with his religion and relationship with Anne and his son, and porthos..??) but Im really hoping the 4 of them will be together more this series.
ReplyDelete"I really hope that Athos being captain doesnt cause him to become too detached or separate from the other 3 boys in series 3"
ReplyDeleteThis is what concern me too. We don't know in which position will be Aramis, but that 50% possibility that he will not be with them at first so if Athos is busy with his new position, D'Art and Porthos will be left to fight on the line.
And i can tolerate this for one episode before pretending them to be together again!
Boot camp is nearly upon us!
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/PopeJessica/status/585065001506865152
Im kinda thinking Aramis will just be straight back esp if theres a time jump (Athos was very much he would be here lets go get him not lets go see if he'll return. I cant see his character even considering staying and leaving the others to fight or even leaving Anne in any kind of danger ) if not I think he'll return in the first ep as I cant see them spending too long with that, (i think his battle will more be balancing his religion with war) more likely they'll want to hit the ground running with the storyline of war in the first ep.
ReplyDeleteI think if they actually do make season 3 about d'Artagnan becoming "legendary" they'd need one heck of a storyline to make that journey believable. I get that he was supposed to be young and impulsive in season 1, but to me it felt like there was no growth on that front in season 2 (if anything, he was even more hot-headed and self-righteous), so if by the end of season 3 he is supposed to become "the greatest of them all", they will really need strong writing for that to be believable.
ReplyDeleteSomething that's just struck me reading through comments about the boys' relationships with each other in S3, and the possible divisions caused by Athos's new position, etc. As many would like to see Athos and d'Artagnan's friendship more on display this year, it'd be interesting if now d'Art is married there could be some common ground on that front? Granted, Athos's wife turned out be a homicidal nightmare, and d'Artagnan's not even spent a complete night at home with his wife yet, so they may not be the best examples of married bliss(!!), but I'd love it if there was some conversation with a nod to married life, if only because they're the only two who've experienced it.
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, homicidal nightmare! Yes but i am not sure what Athos wants - to let her go in peace, or to be a friend with benefits!
ReplyDeleteSomeone else mentioned that episode 5 highlighted the closeness between D'artagnan and Athos , thereafter it disappeared from view and got mushed up along with the many different strands. Porthos and Aramis have been given a closer allegiance throughout, maybe the onset of war etc. will bring the undoubtedly close older brother/younger brother thing to the fore again. Athos, should by definition of his new position, have to make tough decisions.
Maybe someone should ask Adrian about that when he does his Geek Syndicate interview - about D'artagnan's slightly dodgy ( but not abusive to me ) behaviour and about his long-term storyline.
ReplyDeleteI think the words "heroic journey" sound like d'Artagnan doing something particularly brave in S3, probably in relation to the war, such as a long distance mission and on the front line. Adrian described him as being "reckless" - which we know - but he also described him as being "brave" so I think we could be looking at someone along those lines for S3.
It could be taking things to literally to assume his 'heroic journey' is going to be achieved and done and dusted by the end of the show. We will surely see him him maturing this year, certainly showing brilliance as a soldier on the battlefield, and giving us hints at the leader and legend he *will* be in years to come, but not necessarily yet. I agree it would be too much to expect the journey to be all sorted by the end of S3 (assuming it's the last season, of course), and prematurely accelerating his achievement would be a disservice to the show and to the fans. I'd rather leave him at the end of the show with that future ahead of him, with his friends, and Constance (if she's not killed off!!!) supporting him on the way. That'd be a nice way to end, I think.
ReplyDeleteMe too!
ReplyDeleteAgreed Knitty I'm still recovering from the last nanny! I'd like to see Constance in a prominent and important role next to the Queens side. She has always offered good advice to Anne in the past and has more then shown her trustworthiness and loyalty.
ReplyDeleteI'm also completely on board with some interaction between Anne/Constance/Milady. I love the idea of Milady working or spying for the Queen but any interaction between the three would be nice.
I'd be amused to see the boys' reactions on finding out their ladies are working together!
ReplyDeleteIt would be priceless wouldn't it? :-)
ReplyDeleteHe dies in 1628....but then again who is paying attention to history, since the Dauphin was born 7 years to early.
ReplyDeleteYeh, exactly. :)
ReplyDeleteAdrian specifically said the heroic journey thing would be "more for S3" - his Livejournal interview - so d'Artagnan is probably going to have a more important storyline in the next series than what he had in S2, which was mostly related to Constance. Aramis very much had the main storyline in S2 - and to a lesser extent Porthos - so it's possible d'Artagnan and Athos will be a little more prominant in S3.
ReplyDeleteHe's not going to make Captain next year but he could well do something particularly heroic, that gets him recognised by the King as being a great Musketeer.
I know what he said. My point is the 'journey' can still be explored and focussed on across S3 without completing it in one go. It IS unrealistic to expect an entire lifetime and destiny to be achieved in one season, unless there's either a big time jump or an equally unbelievable massive promotion for him somehow. Even if as Adrian says the season will focus on that journey, that's not to say it has to be complete when we eventually leave them.
ReplyDeleteRealistically it would be unbelievable for him to go from the place he was in at the end of S2 - still raw, unpredictable and impetuous - to Captain and leader during S3, in my opinion. For the expendience of the programme (if it is to be the last series) i guess it is possible but at the moment he still resembles the little puppy that needs a firm hand from the older men around him. Physically on screen it just wouldn't ring true - not when you factor in the characters given to the other 3 men. Strong, older, wiser, calmer.
ReplyDeleteI am sure he will undergo a major transformation during S3 and heroic deeds are obviously part of the storyline that will develop. The character has not been developed strong enough yet for him to been in a position where Porthos, Aramis and Athos would happily defer to his experience and leadership.
Oh, I'm not saying that journey will be completed in S3 but I do expect it to have a more important role in S3..
ReplyDeleteS2 was mostly about his relationship with Constance - and his hot headed behaviour - but unless you're a shipper ( which I'm not ) it wasn't a great series for d'Artagnan in his own right and I'm hoping Adrian fully intends to move him forward significantly in S3, though not completely - I do understand that. :)
I don't think anyone expects him to become Captain in S3 - far from it - but I do think he'll move forward significantly in the next series, with his experiences of war playing a part in that.
ReplyDeleteOh, he's definitely a man. ;) hotheaded and impulsive and sometimes immature, of course, but definitely a man. :P
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, I am looking forward to his development in 3. If war doesn't make you grow up, nothing will. They will be hard-earned lessons for him. :(
An ideal storyline to show all of that - for the main 4 characters actually. Aramis has obviously seen war etc. before because of the Savoy episode in series 1. Not sure about the other 2.
ReplyDeleteHow they are going to include the characters at the palace and Constance will be the interesting development. Maybe because so much of S2 was centred around the palace (storyline/characters) it may not play as significant a role week on week.
I would be happy with that, because for me personally, i'd had enough of the palace and the running up and down the stairs by the last episode.
A good bit of fresh air - that's what we all need!
Yeah, I'd like S3 to have less court stuff going on, even if it means less of the court characters as well.
ReplyDeleteLouis featured quite prominently in the first half of S2 but seemed to go back to being a secondary character in the second half, only appearing in a few scenes with Roachfort whilst he kept himself to his rooms.
Sounds like the guys would like fewer corridors and stairs too! They did say there were an awful lot this year. The ep with Princess Louise must have been particularly tiring - Luke must have run the length of the palace, up AND down! No wonder they need to be fit!
ReplyDeleteJust saw that Geek Syndicate is going to do the interview tomorrow. Does anyone know if they will be uploading the interview right after or will it take them a few days to do so?
ReplyDeleteLooks like Howie was at his costume fitting today! Cheers for heads up via the scoop button Julia :)
ReplyDeletehttp://images.spoilertv.com/cache/archived-old-shows/The%20Musketeers/Season%203/Filming/Bootcamp/6_FULL.jpg
They usually do one at the start and end of each season, and they are fab, a real favourite of ours here on the site. Barry usually takes a day or so to get it edited together.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Thanks Sandi.
ReplyDelete:D Happy to see that I submitted it correctly haha
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandi and Julia :))
ReplyDeleteI don't think S2 was all about Aramis. It was about them all throughout. Granted the last 2 episodes focused on the Queen & Aramis affair, but it was also a catalyst in exposing & bringing down Rochefort unhealthy obsession over his affection for the Queen.
ReplyDeleteI think in S2 was about growth & resolution in questions. The Question of Porthos Father. Athos forgiveness & truth of Milady & then repairing/rebuilding, Constance & D'art realizing their love for one another & marrying.
I think the possibility of a fourth series is more dubious than the possibility of the third series was, not just because of BBC 1's low viewing figures - it took BBC Worldwide increasing its funding to help get this third series, when you read between the lines of the BBC's official statement about S3 - but also because it sounds like the actors were originally contracted for three series, which means most of the main cast could make the decision to leave after S3 and we already have rumours that Tom Burke has expressed such an interest.
ReplyDeleteAdrian is doing his interview with Geek Syndicate today, so let's hope the question of S4 will come up.
I also hope we don't see strained relationships between them - it's it's such a clichéd storyline to take as we all know they will inevitably reunite, just as we knew Porthos and Treville would overcome the mysterious gulf between them this year. The guys are military men and should be able to respect Athos position without difficulty. Besides, they already treat him as their unofficial captain. .
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else think we might see Cardinal Mazarin make an appearance in S3? He's a key figure in history and in Dumas' two sequel novels. If he is, I hope he won't be depicted as being Anne's close confidante as he supposedly was in real life; she's been there, done that already in trusting Rochefort and look what happened! It would make her seem weak and not too bright if she trusted Mazarin implicitly after Richelieu and Rochefort's scheming, and that's not who she is at the end of S2. There is plenty of other meaty political and diplomatic intrigue surrounding Mazarin for the writers to work in though ;-D
ReplyDeleteI agree as soldiers they would surely respect Athos' new role. I think the writers will do this justice, theyve spent a lot of time in series 2 developing their characters so that they are believable/ppl we can relate to and will support. I like that they dont just do things for shock value such as kill off main characters like many other shows (something I think alot of us were worried would happen at the end of s2), I hope this stays the same for s3, it would have been easy to kill off someone like treville (other shows may have) but they value good characters. They also havent rushed romances making them more believable, the writers took their time with constance and dart rather than a quick they fancy eachother bam theyre together, I believe their love now. Same with Aramis and Anne, they spent all of series 2 showing us how much he loves her and how much she wants him, rather than throwing them into an affair we know the queen to have. We believe their love now and hopefully the affair will now be used for series 3. I also love each musketeer has something tht drives them (aramis &religion, porthos & want for a family, athos and leadership) I hope these are furthur explored in s3. Ive rambled alot but basically I love the respect the writers have for the characters and hope this continues for series 3. Also some more shirtless Aramis please!
ReplyDeletelol there seems to be a clamour for less clothing in S3 for various reasons ;-D And yay why not! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou haven't rambled, you've outlined what I think makes the show work so very well, that the writers have respect for the characters and make them believable, flawed people who we can relate to. They've taken their time developing them as individuals and in their relationships and as a result we care and we're invested in what happens to them and those they love. When you consider all this has to be woven into the action sequences and there are three romances to find screen time for, and the All For One brotherhood aspect to fit in alongside episode story lines and series arcs, AH and the team have done exceptionally well to achieve that.
Have to admit I don't know much about Mazarin historically and it's been so long since I've read the Dumas novels. I need to brush up on both. But, I agree about Anne she has been there and done that and it would be a regression of her character if she jumped right in and trusted someone else.
ReplyDeleteAs far as advisors and close confidantes for Anne I'd like to see that be Treville and Constance. She knows she can trust them, they care for her and have her, the King and the countries best interest at heart.
As far as new characters Id love to see more of Vargas I think he would make a great adversary. Also some of the Spanish court....maybe the King of Spain. If Sandis thoughts are accurate and the monastery where Aramis went is in Hapsburg control/territory it would be interesting to see some of them.
I'm not sure how I feel about the English element. I know that's supposedly where Milady went but at this point in history Bunckingham is long gone isn't he?
I don't want to see them throw too many elements in there and with them being at war with Spain and since that is Annes family I think Id like to see them concentrate on Spain.
As far as Mazarin I definitely need to do some research ;-)
The real life Mazarin apparently employed D'artagnan's services on a number of occasions, so it would be interesting to see the producers make some sort of connection between the real life d'Artagnan and his fictional counterpart. I believe that Mazarin had the Musketeers disbanded (?) leaving only d'Artagnan and one other Musketeer in his service.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tiger I know very little about him. Mazarin could be an interesting character to throw into the mix couldn't he? Agree it would be interesting to see them make some sort of connection between the real life D'Artagnan and the fictional character.
ReplyDeleteThe Dumas books were set slightly earlier than the series, i assume that if DoB died in 1628, it would need to be a further leap of faith to see him as a character introduced in the next series, although his part in the war with France and Spain is true (only much sooner).
ReplyDeleteAs Richleu is dead (even though the dates don't match) and Mazarin was the next one in line i guess it makes poetic licence sense that he could be around.
Whoever is brought into the new series, i hope the script doesn't waste too much time getting them embedded (like it did with Rochefort).
I assume some of the storylines for series 3 were in draft process before the end of series 2 and i wonder therefore if changes can be made as a result of viewer enthusiasm etc.
Thanks Ares its been ages since I have read the books. The first time was in high school and the second was in the latter part of my college years so a long time lol.
ReplyDeleteI really need to give them a re-read its time! I agree about wasting too much time getting anyone embedded so to speak especially if this is to be the last series.
I don't mind who the main protaganists are, i just hope they 'hit the ground running' so to speak.
ReplyDeleteI think staying true to either the books or history went out of the window a long time ago and to be fair, i'm not sure the fans really mind.
I know I don't mind because I love the story they are telling!
ReplyDeleteHHm....Jess's profile maybe suggesting we're now in 1635? Not liking that if true. It's a big jump....
ReplyDeleteNice catch Knitty! So we are probably looking a fairly big jump then. This raises a lot of questions potentially. Does this mean that the royal couple have their own child as the Dauphin's sibling now, how long did Aramis stay a monk, what the hell as Milady been up to, and that's just for starters.
ReplyDeletehttp://images.spoilertv.com/cache/archived-old-shows/The%20Musketeers/Season%203/Filming/Bootcamp/7_FULL.jpg
This sounds wonderful. I was hoping there would be a time jump. That way the King and Queen could have their 2nd child and Aramis will have spent some time replenishing his soul and Annamis can seriously happen.....Athos will have grown into his role as Captain and maybe D'art and Constance will have had a child.....that way after a few episodes the King can die! oh yes....Porthos needs a girl too!
ReplyDeleteOk....I'm done with my wish list.
Have i missed something? The original was 1630 then we had the ludicrous baby story circa 1631/2 so have we now moved on 4 ish years?
ReplyDeleteIf we have moved on that far maybe D'artagnan is Captain now - the interveining years having gone by and the others have moved on to their future lives.
ReplyDeleteThis is all ridiculous supposition of course.
The verdict is still out for me on how I feel about the time jump. I see pros and cons. Certainly this would be us well under way with the war, as Lucy said allow Athos settle in as Captain (Treville as Minister of war as well) the King and Queen could have had their child and maybe the honeymoon is over and things aren't so great in the royal marriage?
ReplyDeleteIt certainly leaves a lot of questions as you say when the boys went to get Aramis did he go with them or stay as a monk for awhile? Constance and D'Artagnan have been married several years now any babies? Where has Milady been and at what point in the war will we be picking things up?
I'm still on the fence about it like I said I see pros and cons...like knowing what's happened with all the characters without feeling we have missed out on something and yet not taking too much time to catch us up to speed.
D'Artagnan won't be Captain but a time jump of several years would certainly give him several more years of experience as a Musketeer and perhaps time to reign in his youthful temper. For d'Artagnan, a time jump would be needed to move his storyline further.
ReplyDeleteIt would also allow time for the royal baby to be noticeably older and for Aramis to actually have spent some time with his religious beliefs after what happened with Margerite and Adelle.
Yeh you a probably right. The only problem i have with time jump is how the make department age the characters because Luke is still noticeably much younger than the other three on camera.
ReplyDeleteMy only problem with that Ares is not seeing his journey and progression towards that. When we left him at the end of series 2 he wasn't ready for that leap but was working towards that. By extension his teachers/mentors/friends were all working towards their next step in their journey....
ReplyDeleteAthos as Captain, Treville as Minister and no longer an active solider, Aramis leaving the Musketeers if briefly.....to jump ahead like that for me personally I will feel like I've missed out on D'Artagnans journey to what is his destiny and by extension the journey of the others as well.
Maybe I'm not looking at it the right way or being open minded enough....
It has given us all food for thought.
ReplyDeleteThere are numerous possibilities.
True Ares!
ReplyDeleteBut as Angela says we have missed the growth on screen of D'Artagnan in the interveining years. We can only assume.
ReplyDeleteD'Artagnan won't be Captain but the writers may need his character to take a big leap forward in S3, in order to get him closer to their end goal as far as he's concerned.. Luke can't contunue to play d'Artagnan when he's in his 40's.
ReplyDeleteLouis and Anne may have had a second child by then too.
I hope they are all well involved - as much as i love them all, i don't want to watch D'Artagnan without the other 3 - it just does not hold the same feeling for me.
ReplyDeleteThey began together, if this is to be the last, they must end that way.
I don't think we'll have missed much in a few years, just him maturing as a man, which will be important for the next step in his journey. Realistically, Luke can't stick around until he's in his 40's before d'Artagnan starts to make important leaps forward.
ReplyDeleteThe only dissapointing aspect of a time jump is not seeing Athos get to grips with being Captain but for all the other characters, a time jump makes sense.
I am slightly disappointed - was looking forward to the immediate changes that lay ahead.
ReplyDeleteI want them to hit the ground running too but with Knitty's post above about 1635 it seems all bets are off. I'm still digesting how I feel about such a big time jump.
ReplyDeleteMe too i'm afraid
ReplyDeleteI trust Adrian to show any vital details from the missing years in the first episodes, if indeed there is much to tell. Flashbacks can be a very useful tool, and all of the guys are great at handling exposition. Creating some intrigue at the start of the season is fine with me anyway - I like to have something to think about rather than have it all handed to me on a plate at once.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all this Angela, but in light of Knitty's post above about possible time jump not sure Vargas would still be in the frame :-( Mazarin would be but we will miss so much of all the characters' progression. Not sure how I feel about that.
ReplyDeleteBut does this mean that Anne becoming a regent at some point in the series becomes a serious possibillity ?
ReplyDeleteOh really, I didn't know that at all about Tom. I knew read they had signed a 3 year contract, but if they were still able to work on other things during the down time it would be a given the main characters would still be there if the series was picked up. I knew I read that BBC America helped with some of financing for the third series meaning it's appealing & becoming popular in other countries like Downtown Abbey became even winning awards , that it would possible continue longer. Now, I am kinda bummed. I know things have to end, but I just found this show & I love it so much. Thanks for letting me know.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, seeing d'Artagnan mature isn't something that is necessary to the plot as such, but how he then uses that maturity in the future would be far more interesting to explore imo.
ReplyDeleteI don't see Athos having too many problems with becoming Captain, he is the natural leader of the guys anyway and has taken point of various missions through the series so far. Again, a more battle worn/weary Athos would be more interesting perhaps than one who is just settling into the job.
I have to say that the time jump works well for Athos and Milady - not having met again for some time.
ReplyDeleteAs well as his relationship with Milady - not to have met again after the failed meet up at Le Havre.
ReplyDeleteIf they kill off Louis before the end of the season I'd be very unhappy. Not only do I adore the actor, but I think there's only so far you can bend history in the show. Getting rid of him eight years before his time wouldn't sit well with me :(
ReplyDeleteBut you know bending the timeline is their specialty. ;) The baby happened much sooner as well, so it probably wouldn't be too big a jump for them to kill of Louis early (if it worked well for a storyline).
ReplyDeleteThat's the key point, if it works well for the storyline. I don't really see the need for him to die, especially if we are in the middle of the war with Spain that he has started. It doesn't make sense to me :)
ReplyDeleteThe also choose to kill the cardinal too early when they could have gone for a replacement
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd really prefer that as well, everything else would probably seem quite forced. (And with the time jump, I hope they don't just have all that character development off-screen. A bit more maturity maybe - great, but I think this is something that really needs to be done on-screen to work well.)
ReplyDeleteThe time line and the story has already been altered beyond recognition. As a keen amateur historian i hate the historical inaccuracy in many programmes but it is a fact of life and i am often angry with the liberties taken.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I'm always quite surprised how much people on here know about the actual historical facts. I'm one of those ignorants who neither knows nor cares whether the show is historically accurate (which probably spares me a lot of grief...lol) and I think that's the case for many people watching, which is probably why they don't really have to care about getting it right so much.
ReplyDeletei agree totally, most people don't know or care.
ReplyDeleteAlways loved history at school - Medieval is my speciality but history is history to me.
I hate the idea of a 5 year time jump. Seriously hate it.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it more of a 3 year jump? Trying to make everyone look five years older would be a bit of a challenge, especially for the girls, who don't have the advantage of growing beards. I'm all for equality but women growing beards would be a step too far.. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are pros and cons and I'm sure Adrian et al will do a great job of filling in any gaps but screen flashbacks rarely have the same impact as current events so that's a concern for me. The Milady/Athos flashbacks, for instance, have been effective but compare that to the infamous behind-the-bookcase kiss - which socked you between the eyes more? ;) Constance and D'Art will be an old married couple, Treville's diplomacy skills will either be honed to perfection or crumbling fast, Aramis could be Pope elect and Milady's glove could have gone to ye olde charity shop...!!
ReplyDeleteOTOH This time jump would fit with Louis' death but they haven't adhered to timeline considerations before so why now?
Thinking determinedly positive thoughts and hoping that a time jump and 3-4 years of war would at least allow two of the romances the possibility of continuing and D'Art to be well on the way to becoming the ultimate musketeer if this is to be the last series. I hope they don't do a Poldark though and gallop through some events too fast and lose something in the process.
I think they will kill the King at the end of the series. The Dauphine is 4, the time is historically accurated... expect for the 8 yers early particular. lol
ReplyDeleteBut i don't think we will ever see the Queen's regency. If it happens, it will happen in the very end.
True Sandi if done well it can play out nicely and thus far they haven't disappointed me. Well Marguerite and baby kidnapping storylines aside they haven't ;-)
ReplyDeleteI know Liz the time jump throws things for a bit of a loop doesn't it?
ReplyDelete/ I hope they don't do a Poldark though and gallop through some events too fast and lose something in the process./
ReplyDeleteI fear they'll have to. I'd so much have preferred they let the story continue from the beginning of the war, and let the d'Artagnan 'destiny' thing unfold at normal speed, ending with that bright future well on the way but still ahead. So much will be missed if they jump 5 years. Plus I bloody hope they don't make Luke all over-the-top beardy to make him seem older. The scruff this year was perfectly adequate, thank you very much!! That or some horrific scar to show he's been through the wars. Eurgh. I can just see it now.....
They've not even started filming yet and already I need the Baileys. :(
It does indeed! Have posted some initial thoughts above :) Still chewing it over, if it is correct, we are assuming it is but Jess could be yanking our chains lol
ReplyDeleteWell whatever, it's still a long way on from the events of S2, the consequences/results of which I think would be better served addressed while they're happening, not in flashback or taking up half the series in exposition telling us what we've missed.
ReplyDeleteWe are all now thrown into a quandry, each of us with our own storyline emphasis, not knowing how it will play out and it's only April!
ReplyDeleteI see your point Tiger I just need to trust Adrian and co and their vision for not only D'Artagnan but all the characters and the story as a whole.
ReplyDeleteIt's true the dauphin would be 3 or 4 years old and the second child could be there. Things could be all kinds of interesting at this point in the royal marriage. So much room for speculation....
I was certain to see him in S3, but now, with this 4 years time jump i don't know.
ReplyDeleteIf they put him in, i imagine he would be really different. Rochefort too was completely different by the original character, so i guess they would do the same with Mazarino.
But what make me doubt about his presence is... after Rochefort, i doubt that the Queen and Treville will allow another man so close to the King and i highly doubt the Queen will allow him near her. Treville too would say something on the matter i suppose.
Plus, Mazarino was so close to the Queen that both of them, during her regency, took care of the little King, Louis, and his brother Philippe. Mazarino was very involved in their education and grown up... and this could be Aramis path. If he stays on the church path one never knows in which way he can come back at court. If at some point (ends of the serie) the Queen become regent, he can come back not as a Musketeer... but that's only a supposition among many others!
D'Artagnan and Aramis need a time jump - as might Louis, Anne and their child / children - so it makes sense from their perspectives.
ReplyDeleteThanks, for the info. I didn't know that about Tom. I hope the question does get asked. I knew there will be a time jump of sorts, but not that big. Now, considering this information & it's possibly the last season my mind is reeling on things they might do.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the rest?
ReplyDelete*passes a Baileys with ice over cyberspace* ;) I share your wobbles about over the top beardy = older lol. So much will be missed and in many ways ending the show with D'Art on the cusp of his destiny would work really well. War could very realistically speed up his journey, experience forged on the battlefield would be priceless in that regard, but if done at fast forward it could lose any impact gained.
ReplyDeleteWe'll have to respectfully disagree on that. ;)
ReplyDelete"This time jump would fit with Louis' death but they haven't adhered to timeline considerations before so why now?"
ReplyDeleteMake the Queen regent in the end, the very end, would be great. We won't miss Ryan in any episode and at the same time we will know that she will have the chance to live her own life more freely then before. We won't see it, pity, but still is a great way to end her path.
Both Athos and Treville established in their new positions. I am not sure how Porthos would benefit
ReplyDelete/*passes a Baileys with ice over cyberspace* ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks. ;( I seriously hope Jess is wildly chain yanking now! Very subtle but oh so mean. lol
His father could die and he can inherit the title, with all the problem connected with it. It would be close with the books.
