  1. I haven't managed to watch the live version yet, I am without a PC for the next few hours, except for the next 10 minutes or so, lol. Looking forward to seeing your emails come through on my phone and hearing what you thought of it though!

  2. I didn't enjoy this episode as much as the previous two, though there were still moments that I liked.

I loved Simera and her relationship with Porthos and her father, I enjoyed watching Milady creep her way further into Louis's affections and there were moments during the Constance sub-plot that I liked, though I agree with Sandi that it didn't flow quite as well as it should have..

I do think the Musketeers were a little neglected in this episode and it's why I'm hoping that the next episode and the Athos based one make them more central..

  3. I have to agree that constance's subplot didnt quite feel complete and I couldnt help but feel it was a little rushed. It also left me thinking what her husband's sbeaking around had to do with anything, but perhaps that will be answered later? Also i'd really started to warm to louis before this episode but now im back to constantly shaking my head at his stupidity! But perhaps thats partly the reason why we love him! The preview for the next episode looks exciting though I have to say! Definitely looking forward to those constagnan moments :)

  4. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Colin Salmon and Antonia Thomas were superb in their roles and really thought that Howard Charles shined in this episode too! Loved the scene with Milady and the King under the table when the Queen and Rochefort walked in! Lol However, I did think that the plot with Constance was a little rushed at the end. I would have preferred there to have been a break between her being told they were going to hang her and the pardon! However, I loved when Constance saw Milady on the stairs! Now to re-watch on iplayer so I can further digest! :)

  5. You absolutely nailed the promo pics for episode 4 Tigercheetah. They were indeed Jessica's Constagnan images.

  6. I couldn't understand why there was a necessity to bring Bonacieux into this episode, except to show that he didn't plead for Constance and stick up for her when Rochefort found her. If d'Artaganan had witnessed that there would be pistols, swords and a fight to the death! I wish they had spent a bit more time after the King told Constance he was going to hang her. However, overall there were many parts of the subplot I enjoyed.

  7. Looking forward to that Constagnan moment next episode. Just sorry we've got to wait a fortnight! ;)

  8. It was the reddish lighting that mostly gave it away. :) That clip might be misleading re-a potential kiss but as long as we're finally seeing an increase in sexual tension and / or closeness, I'll be happy. Constagnan is a love story that needs to start having some romance in it..

The fact that D'Artagnan and the other Musketeers didn't learn about Constance's brush with death was a touch odd and her brush with her husband in the street wasn't what I expected either, I thought she was actually going to go 'home' to see Bonacieux..

  9. I have to be absolutely honest, I was disappointed by that episode. There were things to love. Antonia Thomas was simply brilliant. I loved her interaction with Porthos. Never mind Charlotte Salt, who's Marguerite is the personification of strangely detached nothingness at the moment, Antonia's Samira was fully of energy and character. She would have made a wonderful addition to the cast. Colin Salmon was a bit of a let down really and the Constance felt tagged on. It did serve the purpose of illustrating beyond a doubt that her husband is a pathetic scumbag. You could just imagine the can of whoop ass D'Artagnan would have opened if Rochefort had slapped Constance's face in front of him. Overall, the episode felt like a wasted opportunity to me. The promo for episode four was like a bizarre free association dream sequence/nightmare. Seriously, would that interest a casual viewer? Place your bets now that the Constagnan kiss doesn't come off. Weird moment where Constance seems to be waking from some kind of nightmare in a flop sweat. Hopefully the Aramis storyline will deliver and at least some of the episode will flow and make for a coherent, enjoyable whole, rather than the mish mash we had tonight. Not great for me tonight I'm afraid.:(

  10. I loved Colin and Antonia. I loved Gage. I loved Athos. I loved seeing Milady worm her way into the king's bed. But I do have some things I didn't like. I didn't care for Rochefort as much this episode. He came off too slimy and creepy. I didn't enjoy his scenes with Anne very much. I also agree that the end of the Constance plot was a bit strange. By the way, did Marguerite show up in that last scene? I don't remember. She was arrested and then I didn't think about her again until the show was over.
While I am loving the new direction of the show, I have a few complaints. I feel like every episode ends the same. Louis is mad that "the musketeers disappointed me" and runs off with Rochefort. Treville does little more than scowl. I don't quite understand the Anne/Marguerite relationship yet....or if they even really have one. And I don't care for the Constagnan stuff. I was hoping that by now we would have a better idea of her husband's character and direction. And while I am glad that we don't have a week to week of "poor constance," I feel as if there is a lack of tension and longing going on which I hope doesn't negatively influence the way we view a future reunion.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree that Antonia Thomas was one of the best things about the episode, Samira was another feisty lady who had some nice scenes with Porthos whilst they were both captured.

Next week's episode looked more interesting - not just the Constagnan stuff but hopefully, Aramis's religious side coming up again - and Sandi seemed to love the episode if her tweet was anything to go by,. :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I have to agree with you over Marguerite. She is just so detached and at the moment seems a bit pointless, except for a way for Aramis to see her son! Antonia would have been a delight to have as a regular on the show. Perhaps, the possible Constagnan kiss is yet another dream sequence! :(

    ReplyDelete
  13. I liked that look on the stairs too! Milady must be thinking so many things! Like "haha, look at my now!"

    ReplyDelete
  14. Marguerite does seem like a strangely absent character at the moment but there 's a good chance she'll become more relevant later on. There's no sense at all of Rochefort already being aware of Aramis's attentions on the baby.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is the first episode of Season 2 I actually want to watch again. I still feel the Musketeers themselves are being somewhat sidelined, but it was good to see a bit more of Aramis (although I'm surprised we weren't shown his reaction to the news the baby was missing) and Porthos had some good scenes. Overall, I thought they were perhaps trying to cram too much in, but at least the pace didn't flag!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree about Aramis. I want to see an episode that focuses on his ties to Anne and the baby and how this affects him without it being squeezed in. It is strange to me that after the series 1 hints of his relationship with Anne, their affiair, and now having a child that there hasn't been as much between them so far. Not that they need a ton of screen time, but something feels missing there to me.

    ReplyDelete
  17. At the moment, we don't have any idea whether Anne was just using Aramis or whether she did have any genuine feelings for him. As the Aramis plot is meant to be key to this season, surely there's got to be a lot more to come soon.

    ReplyDelete
  18. To be honest, I never felt that Aramis and Anne loved each other in the same way D'Artagnan and Constance do, they barely knew each other in S1 whilst D'Artagnan was actually living in Constance's house for six months.. I agree that Anne is being a bit dismissive of Aramis but to be fair to her, she can't hint in any way that Louis isn't the father of the baby.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Exactly. I'm hoping to get to the root of her intention too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sad to say this was my least favourite episode of both series. I don't know exactly why, it just...bugged me, and that's odd because I usually love it all. On a purely technical side the slo-mo bits were annoying (the boys breaking into the safehouse, Constance being taken away to hang etc) and, I think, unnecessary. This show can do and does do fantastic dramatic moments in real-time without needing such tricks.

Plotwise, I found Rocheforte's S&M scene and his increasing weirdness is becoming very uncomfortable to watch, as is Louis' now rather tedious refrain about the Musketeers disappointing him. I do hope this isn't going to turn into a predictable theme in every episode, with Rocheforte predictably saving the day and the boys getting shouted at. I know the theme is MEANT to be darker and less safe for them all, so it's probably just me that's 'off' and not the show, but I'm still concerned. I guess I'm just anxious for our loved characters and their fortunes this year, and now we're starting to see just how dark things are heading so early, my poor fan heart is already hiding behind the sofa, not wanting to know what's coming. :(

On a plus note though, the Samara/Porthos scenes were great. Never seen Antonia Thomas before but she was excellent. I find Porthos sometimes gets crowded out by the other boys' antics, so it was great to see Howie getting his own space this week, and doing it very well. Agree Constance's story was bitty, and I'm not sure her reprieve and presumable return to the Queen's side with all forgiven is quite believable. Bonacieux surely gets quote of the episode with his questions about the baby!

All said, a disappointing episode if I'm honest, but I'm more cheered than I was because the King himself just favourited my tweet complaining about next week's football. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I saw a Twitter post from Jessica Pope earlier this week from a fan of Charlotte Salt asking whether Marguerite would have a bigger part in the story, as so far she only had a few words to say. Jessica replied that she would do. I'm hoping so, as at the moment her character does seem a bit pointless to me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes I also thought that would have added to the tension. Perhaps if they had waited to the very end as although the porthos and samara end scene was lovely I felt as if it was cut short or unfinished. If they had let d'artagnan discover constances' sentence then perhaps we could have had more suspense as well as developing their relationship which hasnt really gone very far this series. Although it is still early days and I do hope the promo doesnt disappoint us with one of those misleading almost kisses!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well Rochefort has one creepy, weird obsession/fetish with Anne... I liked the episode overall but Rochefor was just creepy! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. No, I don't think they do either. But it does make for a tangled web of a situation! I think dismissive is a good word.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes to be honest I was convinced we would see more of the two in this episode and in fact I was hoping she had gone to her husband to announce she was leaving him! But obviously I was far too optimistic. Im really hoping it Is a genuine kiss next episode but if not at least more screen time would definitely help!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, that Porthos and Samara scene at the end was lovely. It definitely would have been good to have a Constagnan scene shortly after that to bring their story along a bit more. They did seem to be cramming in too much to the episode! I'm pretty sure that kiss isn't going to happen - either another dream or they'll be interrupted but at least they'll be close. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. i totally agree with you about the slo-mo bits in this episode. I think it was a bit unnecessary this time and possibly would have been better seeing it in real time.

    ReplyDelete
  28. She's a complete irrelevance at the moment. Even her interaction with Aramis seems weird. She's coming across not as a strong woman but as a fairly pathetic, easily distracted, lazy creature. I don't think Aramis could seem more disinterested in her if he tried and yet she's utterly clueless. The problem with leaving her development until later in the series, is that frankly I don't really care about her at the moment. The writers clearly didn't care much either, as they didn't even bother to show her fate at the end. I'm not even vaguely interested in her and that's not good. If she's ultimately going to prove to be a baddie, I need to care at this point. Equally if she's a decent soul, it needs to matter and right now, it doesn't. Tonight illustrated for me some of the problems I'm having with this series of the Musketeers. Something's just not gelling for me at the moment. Whether it's the odd decisions they've made with the Constagnan interaction, or lack of it, the determination to kidnap everyone except Aramis (his time will doubtless come), or the separation of the Musketeers at key points in the storyline. The measure of a good episode for me, is whether I'm inclined to get up and do something else while it's on. Normally, that never happens during the Musketeers. Tonight I got up half way through and put on a wash. If even I was tempted to check out Benidorm tonight, they're in trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Rochefort reminded me of the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when he was searching for Constance. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Marguerite actually carries the dauphin in to Anne in that last scene. Wasn't she just arrested for neglect?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Completely agree with your complaints. They echo my feelings exactly. I hate to say this but I'm beginning to feel as though the development of this series and some of the writing, was rushed. I'm also beginning to wonder if the individual episode writers consulted with each other? It's ridiculous that kidnapping is becoming an every week occurrence. So far, excluding kidnapped guest stars, we've had the King, D'Artagnan, the Dauphin (technically but not literally) and Porthos. In a couple of weeks we'll have Athos. It's nuts and worse, it's lazy. The King's sudden turn around on hanging Constance was just badly written. Episodes end without the fate of characters being known, Constagnan has been neutered. Are any of us sensing that these are two people craving each other? Also, we get it, the King loves Rochefort and is pissed off with the Musketeers, who apparently can't find their asses with both hands, as far as he's concerned. Marc Warren, whom I love, hammed it up tonight, particularly in that scene with the prostitute. I thought he was going to burst out laughing at one point. Too much is misfiring for me at the moment. Hopefully the next episode will be significantly better.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The way it was written tonight, who knows what was going on?

    ReplyDelete
  33. There were some seriously dodgy moments from the usually dependable Mr Warren tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  34. There were things that I liked in this episode, but the sticking points are the only things in my head at the moment.

So far this series I find the dialog and some of the themes to be clunky, with the writers shouting the themes and conflicts at us over and over, just in case we're not smart enough to catch them. Like 'See! See! Audience, did you catch that we're setting up conflict! Do you get it yet? Well, here, we'll shout it again.'

Louis's disappointment with the musketeers feels like one of those over shouted themes. As did the conversations between Porthos and Samara about home and identity. These are important themes and I'm looking forward to this storyline, but there were spaces in this episode where the dialog was overwrought, when we know the actors can sell it more powerfully in other ways. Too much telling us, not enough showing us.

I'm also feeling not enough interaction between the musketeers themselves. Things feel crammed and rushed, whereas last year, we got to see the relationships and comradery come to life and breathe a little bit in the midst of the plots. We could have used more of that breathing room in this episode.

Constance's storyline felt pushed my suspension of disbelief.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's a puzzle, especially when the cast have been so vocal in saying
they're loving the new direction. When there are already fan concerns by
episode 3 that the new direction ISN'T working, there's something going
wrong somewhere. And also, where the heck is Treville's fight? His
entire role thus far has been to stand in front of Louis and get shouted
at, then go back to the garrison and scowl into the distance. He gave a
pathetic defence of the King last week when D'Artagnan was rightly
kicking off about Louis' behaviour, and while I get why he has to give a show
of loyalty, it's as if he's just given up. That's not the
    Treville we met in S1.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Might not want to get your hopes up too much. You know how these promos can be misleading, and with the above comments about D&A's total lack of interaction so far apart from the slanging match at the garrison, it wouldn't surprise me if Constance did her usual 'but I'm married' whine and wimps out back to hubby again. :( That said, didn't Jess post an image from that scene with something about it 'getting hotter'? Maybe there's a teeny tiny bit of hope. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've been thinking about Bonacieux watching Constance being slapped and doing nothing as she was taken away, and I can't decide if he was a) just snooping on his wife, or b) figuring out that Rocheforte's powerful and might be useful to him. That he didn't jump in and try to defend her speaks volumes. I think either he'll twig that he's completely lost his wife, give up all thought of getting her back and instead come under Rocheforte's warped influence, or he'll keep spying on Constance and use her behaviour and actions against her at a later date. it hints that he's finally getting some sort of character development.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You're absolutely right. Hugo Speer is a terrific actor who was criminally under-used in series one. If anything it's even worse this time around. As you rightly say, he just stands there looking pained and being insulted. He's not defending his Musketeers, he's an honourable man who has become little more than an apologist for a weak, dishonourable King. Frankly, it makes you wonder why he signed up again? Perhaps things will improve as the series goes on but that's precisely the problem. You really can't afford to squander half a series, then cram the action into the back five. Not when you're trying to serve a cast of this size. This is meant to be the set up and that's the whole point, they're supposed to be setting up the promise of things to come, not some intangible, vague hope.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My bet is they'll almost kiss, then something will kick off and they won't connect because hey, a bit more utterly pointless teasing and manipulation is just what we need and deserve as fans. It's been so much fun up to now!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I really think that we've had enough of the Rochefort introduction now - we get it, he's a creepy nutter! Episode 3 should have been more about the leads imo, with the secondary characters more in the background. There was too much going on in this episode for my liking.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Am I right that the episodes on The Musketeers are penned by several different writers? Perhaps episode 3's problem is purely in the writing. 1 was fantastic, and just what we'd come to expect from the show. Ep 2 was good as well, with some truly lovely moments and set-pieces, while the difference in pace and script between them and 3 is quite stark. Although that doesn't address the lack of movement in certain areas across all the episodes we've seen so far, it might mitigate the complaints about this one. Episode 4 will be the teller.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well, I guess you guys have said it all. I really, really want to like this season, but so far, it's left me completely cold. There's just so much not working for me right now - and you guys mentioned most of it in your comments already, so I'm not gonna repeat it all - and I really don't get what went wrong from season 1 to now. I had so much faith in the writers and all the spoilers we heard beforehand sounded great - and as of right now, I think there isn't a single storyline I really enjoy or am actually invested in so far (even the baby storyline that I was a HUGE advocate of is quite badly done IMHO). It all seems completely random and disjointed. I'm not even quite sure how we're about to FEEL about half of the characters, the way their behavior changes completely from one episode to the next.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's it exactly. "Too much telling us and not enough showing us." The dialogue was incredibly clunky in places tonight. I notice it had two writers, Lucy Catherine and Adrian. I actually think it's a sad indictment that it took two writers to produce the most disappointing episode of the Musketeers I've seen yet.

    ReplyDelete
  44. So with you on the slo-mo bits, they were terrible. Especially during the Constance scene I felt. The complete turn around in her sentence once the doctor came in and mansplained the situation was just awful too, I cringed so hard. The worst writing ever on the show :/

I did like Colin and Antonia though. I'm glad that the Porthos and Samira relationship wasn't a romantic one, it didn't need to be to work.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Some of the episodes seem to have one writer and others two. As I said in comment above, it's pretty sad that it took two writers to produce what we saw tonight. Although perhaps that was the problem a clash of styles and objectives for the episode. To be honest I don't think I've ever given a series this much benefit of the doubt. I'm beginning to run on empty.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I couldn't really believe how either of them treated each other in the episode. The way Constance spoke to Bonacieux was awful after he seemed touched that she may have come to visit him but then realised she had a strangers baby with her. Then his cowardliness and caving to Rochefort's threats was equally bad. How on earth the audience are meant to be feeling about these characters is anyone's guess at this point!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I feel like some of the blame has got to go towards the episode directors. I haven't looked them up, but comparing last year. Remember some of the gaze direction and camera work that went on last year? It really captured and subtly reinforced the undertones in some of the episode while capturing the characters at their best, letting the actors do so much with just an expression. The Good solider was great for this last year, some of the best scenes in that episode had limited dialog but great camera angles and silent character exchanges.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ha yes, that look on the stairs was very telling from both women wasn't it. That did work well at least! lol

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't know if Lucy Catherine has ever written an episode of The Musketeers before but I'll be brutally honest, on the strength of this, if she never writes another one, that's good for me. Frankly, I don't know what Adrian was thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  50. We NEEDED Farren Blackburn. That was a guy who knew how to direct the show.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really liked Antonia Thomas, and she did her part very well, but the writing made her feel a like more of a stock character. Like she was just there to tell Porthos 'You don't belong here' and that was it.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm disappointed with the Aramis/Margueritte thing atm, like you I don't really feel there's been anything to it. It's obviously all happened off screen so far - there's filling in gaps for yourself and then there's trying to tell too much and failing to flesh a character out. I think we know what has happened here unfortunately. I would really love to know if scenes have been sacrificed for time along the way, because I would like to think that things like this haven't been this lackadaisical on purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What's worrying me now is that we've got a two week wait for the next episode. Having the show off the TV for a fortnight on the back of a weak episode like this one is really not good, as people who were on the fence after tonight may just not remember to come back. Add to that the BBC's near-zero promotion of it, and my concerns for episode 4 ratings are pretty high. Stupid football!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've only seen it the once, but there's some nice character moments in ep 4 which is why I liked it I think.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Totally right. I was thinking that myself. I can't think of a worse or weaker episode to go into the brief hiatus on. If I were a casual viewer, I just wouldn't be back. My Mum actually called us a few hours ago, just after the episode aired. She know we love it and she and Dad watch it themselves and in between general conversation about the new bathroom tiles lol, she said, "Where you guys watching The Musketeers (silly question). We thought it was a real stinker tonight." Said it all really.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have to admit that I am still liking Rochefort, his creepy scene as he bore down on Anne as she cried in the hallway was horrifyingly stalker like. But yes, we know what he's like now, so I don't see why we need to keep having so much time with him rather than the leads of the show....

    ReplyDelete
  57. If the King and Milady can have an under-the-table tryst with garters and *ahem* skin on show, a similar reunion for D&C is the very least the poor suffering Constagnan fans deserve. Whether we'll get it or not is another question. :(

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, I liked that Moorish theme too, it was lovely.

I did like Aramis getting angry at Tariq after Porthos had been taken hostage too, those kind of moments have been missing from the season a bit I feel.

    ReplyDelete
  59. He is certainly the creepiest baddie on TV at present, there's a lot of menace in him!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I really do feel that they shouldn't have added the Constance side plot to this episode, it really didn't help it at all and didn't work imo. I felt like they just wanted her to do something, anything, in the episode. Her always being in the right, when lead characters are flawed, is starting to get on my nerves a bit too if I'm honest :p

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems with the show this season. When they said the show was going to be darker this is what I feared. You've all pretty much listed the things I'm struggling with the most. It's called The Musketeers, but yet I feel like I'm getting very little of them and when we do all they do is show up and start shooting. There is very little dialogue when they are together. I miss the banter and the humor that was shown last season. That was my favorite thing that highlighted their relationships. I can't tell you how many times I've watched each episode of season one. How many times have I wanted to re-watch this season? None. I barely recognize the Constance I fell in love with as well. I miss her fiery spirit and had been looking forward to her relationship with Anne, but she's only being verbally and physically abused by Rochefort. I feel like I see him more than anyone else which quite frankly I'm getting tired of. I'm getting fed up with Louis constantly putting the Musketeers down. I never thought I'd actually miss the Cardinal, but I loved his bantering with Louis and his scenes with Treville. Even though the Cardinal did terrible underhanded things he always did it for France. Luke was right about Rochefort. He is a slithery snake. His obsession with Anne is disturbing. Marguerite.. Y'all pretty much nailed it where she's concerned. Useless. Not enough Aramis who's my favorite character. This is my favorite show and I'm just really disappointed with how things are playing out right now after such an amazing first season. I really hope they can turn things around. I want more humor and interaction between our guys and I don't mean just showing up to save the day. It reminds me of what happened to two of my other favorite shows. Witches of East End and Beauty and the Beast. Each show came back for their 2nd second season deciding to change the theme and taking things for a darker turn. One got cancelled and the other barely got a renewal. I just pray this doesn't happen to this one as well:(

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hmm, she's written an episode of Being Human that I really enjoy so I can't put it down to her writing to be fair. I think that there is just too much in the plot for it to ever have worked to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I i think Marguerite is realy dont care about royal baby. do you think she knows that real dad is Aramis and jut using baby be with Aramis.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It could be that the genre doesn't suit her and I agree that it was completely overworked in terms of plot but I find it very hard to excuse some of the dialogue, which was frequently poor and at times dreadful. There was also some really odd editing. One minute the Musketeers were talking to Alaman in the Garrison, then they were walking down the hallway in the Palace. The episode was a poorly plotted, badly written, oddly directed, questionably edited, mess. Other than that, I Ioved it! Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Good point, and probably a big part of my issue with her storyline this episode. And really, was kidnapping the baby actually her only recourse?

    ReplyDelete
  66. It was senseless nonsense with more holes than a Swiss cheese. Why not simply speak to Anne and suggest using steam to clear his lungs? She was a desperate, frightened mother, she would hardly have refused. Certainly it would have been a heck of a lot less invasive than leeches and could she not have have gotten some hot water and generated steam in the Palace rather than dragging a baby with a fever half way across Paris? Then again generating steam hasn't been Constance's strong point this season.:) Sandi is right about this version of Constance. I so miss the series one incarnation. She was a brave, kind, generous soul. Courageous and full of spirit. I don't even recognise this strange, sad, vaguely sanctimonious creature. Who's being used as a physical and emotional punch bag.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wednesday, you make excellent points, about Constance in particular. Although something tells me that his physical and verbal abuse of Constance will eventually be dealt with. Most likely by the sharp end of D'Artagnan's sword.

    ReplyDelete
  68. She is poorly written and flat this year. And as much as I think she's right in the issues she's brought up about her relationship with d'Artagnan, which I also feel are more adult and realistic reasons, it felt late in the game to make an issue of them. If I felt it was because Constance was growing up or growing as a character, it would have fit better. As it stands, it's storyline that's all over the place, where none of the characters involved in it are tracking well for me.

Which translates to this episode with her being shoehorned into the sick-dauphin plot in an unbelievably contrived way.

    ReplyDelete
  69. They also seem to be setting her up for continuous headbutting with Rochefort, which worries me they could be foreshadowing darker events later on. D'Artagnan has really dropped her into a viper's nest at the Palace: so far she's been slapped and emotionally/physically abused by Rochefort, who wants her away from the Queen and away from an position of influence over her, plus he'll want her even further out of the way when he learns of her history with the Musketeers; Louis's already shouted at her and sentenced her to death; Anne's ripped her to shreds in front of the whole court, and shortly Milady - who previously kidnapped her, punched her in the head and threatened to shoot her, will be smirking at her across the proverbial royal breakfast table. "A good position" it ain't! With all that going on I truly hope she gets that Constance fight back, because she's going to need it more than ever before.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I just think they've no clear idea what they want to do with them and in particular, what they want to do with her. This isn't generating good drama. They haven't had enough screen time to generate anything frankly! At least we now know definitively who she works best with. When she's with Luca, it's magic. They light up the screen. They're meant to play off each other. There's something fundamental missing from him without her and something absolutely essential missing from her without him. I just hope beyond hope that we're now going to get this thing back on the road and moving. Up to now they've taken a Ferrari and driven it into a ditch.

    ReplyDelete
  71. This decimation of her character is hugely disappointing and I sincerely hope it's not an attempt to disconnect us from her in advance of killing her off. I'd be pretty disgusted if that was the case.

    ReplyDelete
  72. That could well be the plan. I know they claim they're not following the book, nevertheless Rochefort and Milady were both involved in her death in the literature, and with Luke being so utterly fantastic at portraying a hurt D'Artagnan, we might be looking at a season 3 protagonist (if it miraculously gets renewed after tonight's fiasco) that's more like Athos, grief-stricken, angry, and letting that loss drive him to be the legend he's destined to be. The writers will never give them a happy ever after, there's no drama in it, and with her death in canon, it's unfortunately very possible. Plus Adrian hinted that not everyone would survive this year...

Can you really see them getting married if Bonacieux was killed off? I can't, unless the writers could come up with enough traumas to sustain a newly-wed couple for a whole series. Unlikely. The only realistic outcome is endless separation, either through her death or never getting away from her husband.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I don't think she has any suspicion the baby isn't the King's, and she's already pushed Aramis aside a few times to tend to the Dauphin, which shows she's putting the baby first. I think she's just naive and unaware *he* is using *her*.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Has she ever actually pushed aside Aramis in favor of the dauphin? They've portrayed her as pretty neglectful so far. In the one interaction where she and Aramis were together with the baby, she was quite content and happy to ignore the dauphin completely, even when he was crying until Aramis encouraged her to go to him. When she closed the door on Aramis aside in this episode, I felt it was more because there were other people around, not because the dauphin was her priority.

I don't think she actually has any suspicions that the dauphin may not be the king's son, but she's pretty hazily characterized right now.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Bizarrely what they've managed to create is a virtually sexless affair. They've spent so much time angsting about the whole thing that they've essentially killed off the passion, which is ridiculous. I'm now not even sure what they had that made the loss so great in the first place. These two are supposed to be compelled by each other. Their's is a passion so intense that they'd risk anything and everything for it. You need to depict that. Instead they're playing around with it. I presume in the hope that Constagnan fans will keep coming back each week for the odd crumb thrown from the table. Sadly it's like the boy who cried wolf. Eventually no one cares and no one's there when the moment finally arrives.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I didn't read that as being happy to ignore the Dauphin. She did say the other maids or ladies (can't remember the term) would tend him. She was probably a bit stunned at his attention, so we can be a bit sympathetic at her hesitation, and anyway it was only for a few seconds and then she went. Any time they've interacted so far has been when he went to her, not through her seeking him out. I've not taken her to be neglectful, tbh.

    ReplyDelete
  77. This is the scenario that I fear. The one thing that I think mitigates against it, is that they need the emotional connection for him in the series, rather than simply turning him into, essentially an emotionally deadened killing machine. I also think it might be interesting to take D'Artagnan to war if there is a third series and have Constance truly experience what it's like to be the partner of a soldier in battle.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Well I have some very mixed feelings about this episode. I found the entire thing to be very choppy. Although I did enjoy the idea behind Constance's story in this episode I felt that it did not have any place to be in it. Which pains me to say because I adore Constance. Also the first 30 minutes of the episode entirely were not very enjoyable for me. I don't know if a lot was cut or if it was just the way the dialogue was written but up until the scene with the reading of the poetry to Porthos things escalated a little too quickly for me and felt rushed. The last 30 minutes however I felt more flow because we were actually seeing the after affects of the events to some degree, we can see reactions etc.

Rochefort did intrigue me though. The scene with woman he paid to role play as the Queen shows me just how how messed up he is. I don't remember who said it but one of the main guys while doing pressed mentioned how Rochefort is a little more of a psychopathic villain and I can see those psychopathic tendencies coming through in the role playing scene. So twisted!

I didn't hate the episode, I just feel like the way it was executed was off? I am not a tv writer but thats my opinion. It simply did not flow in my eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 episodes of the season so I am not worried about anything to come in the future. The 2 week wait is going to be torture haha!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I definitely did. I think if Aramis hadn't said anything, she wouldn't have gone to get the baby at all. She came a cross a touch annoyed that he'd insisted.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Ahh I sound so negative. Not trying to be! I assure you I love my musketeers :P

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yeah the musketeers not knowing about what was going down with Constance was a bit odd to me. I understand that they had their own thing going on but not even hearing about it at the very end? They were trying to fit in so much in this episode so I guess that's why nothing of the sort was included.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I really hope to see D'Artagnan confront Rochefort. D'Artagnan thought getting her that job was a good thing. Boy was he mistaken. I miss her interactions with the guys as well. She was like a 5th Musketeer. Now she's resorted to being told to keep her mouth shut. I also thought it was a little strange that Athos had no reaction whatsoever to hearing that the baby was sick. He knew that this would upset Aramis greatly, but he didn't even spare a glance as he's always done in the past where the baby is concerned. I miss those sideways glances exchanged between the two men. Like Athos is making sure that Aramis is staying in check and keeping it together. It's little things like this that matter and show the bonds of friendship. Sorry if it seems like I'm being such a downer, but I just want to see the show I fell in love with.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think the episode's execution was definately a bit off and maybe that's why it felt a bit 'wrong' at times for me. I don't think it helped that S2's tone overall is more serious than in S1 or that the Musketeers as a collective were absent a lot of the time - there's a bit too much time spent at court at the moment.

I'm definately enjoying the more serious tone of S2 but I think at times, it's gone too far the other way, like Atlantis has for me. There's been very little humour between Aramis and Porthos so far this year.

Next week does look more interesting..

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think the show is still great :) but this was the weakest episode so far for more.

    ReplyDelete
  85. For me personally, Constance's place is by d'Artagnan's side - their story is a love story, even if some viewers think Constance would be wasted in that 'old-fashioned' type of role - and by extension, with the other Musketeers too. Whilst it's great that she now has a purpose at the palace, her friendship with Anne and her access to the baby still feels rushed and It feels like she's in a separate show to the boys at times. Jessica said that S2 would be "more romantic" but so far, there's little evidence for that..

Moaning aside, the first two episodes went down well with most critics and viewers, so the new series isn't doing too badly in that regard :) we just need to see more of the Musketeers as a unit in future episodes and a bit more banter. Does episode 4 comes across better in that regard?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'm not as convinced as others that Constance might be killed off. It could happen of course, she's not 100% safe like the Musketeers themselves but I don't see any obvious signposting - the whole tone of S2 is different to S1, not just the writing of her character.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Completely agree with everything you said. And as for Marguerite: can we talk about the fact that she was casually outed as a Spanish spy in a half-sentence last night? Which kind of makes me wonder: do they ever actually background-check ANYONE in that palace?!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well, I'd say that's a matter of opinion. I wasn't all that happy with episode 1 and 2 either, especially 2. Last week for me didn't really work all that well and I thought it was way too early in the season to focus an episode so much on one of the characters (especially if they're hoping to gain NEW viewers this season). And I really thought I WOULD like them and kept telling everyone not to fret and that I had complete trust in the writers. Right now, all I do when a new episode is on is pray that it'll be better than the last clusterf**k. They're just so inconsistent in every aspect that they might as well have completely different characters in each episode that way they act one way today and the complete opposite in the next episode.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Well, seeing as she was casually outed as a Spanish spy last night, I hope they actually have plans for her, cause so far? I think everyone could really do without her.

    ReplyDelete
  90. LOL! I said the exact same thing about the kidnapping plots in the other thread. It's really becoming ridiculous, especially since half the time it's completely useless. The Dauphin's kidnapping seemed like a tacked-on thing that the episode could have done without - and what was the point of the Spanish, who had to make a quick retreat in that marketplace, to actually take an injured Porthos with them? He was of no use to them (did they think a lowly soldier would be a big bargaining chip?!) expect for slowing them down. So to me, that felt like they thought that was the only way to get Samara and him into a room so they could jabber on about identity all night long. You know, when Howard kept saying this season was about identity, I thought it would be done a lot more subtly and not be advertised with proverbial neon signs. The writers really DO seem to thinks that we're complete morons who can't figure out a direction without being literally TOLD about it a hundred times...

    ReplyDelete
  91. I so agree with every single thing you said. I was fully expecting to have to stay up half the night after each episode aired to rewatch and gif it and now an episode is over and I keep thinking to myself "So.....bed then?" because I don't even CARE about watching it again. And I'm starting to get really, really worried about a renewal as well. If they don't turn this whole mess around, and fast, I think we're gonna end both this season and the series as a whole on a lot of disappointment.

And I miss Aramis as well. :( So far, it feels like he's barely there expect to creep around the baby (and dammit, I really thought I was gonna LOVE the baby storyline, but so far all that happened is that I'm mad at Anne and that there's way too much baby without Aramis attached to it, but also too little Aramis doing anything else but worry about the baby).

    ReplyDelete
  92. i missed annamis scenes in this episode, maybe next episode. Still i think Marguerite too innocent.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I liked it... didn't love it. My main problem so far this season is that I find the episodes are dragging a bit.

Rochefort is quite the stalker isn't he?

This whole "yes she's out of line but is ultimately right" schtick Constance has going on isn't working for me. She's coming off more Mary-Sue than "strong female character".

Not enough Anne & Aramis. I need more of them.

Louie is reeeeeeally getting on my nerves now. What an imbecile. Having said that Ryan Gage is doing a great job!

Mylaidy, it's good to have you back!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I agree with everything you said!!! I'm upset because I've told several of my friends to watch it and how amazing the show was, but this was all based on everything from season 1 of course. The way I raved about it they probably thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread because I told them I had very little to complain about. Now S2 roles around and the writers are making a liar out of me! Boo! I'm scared to hear what they're going to say to me! Are these the same writers from the first season. When will we know if we'll get a renewal? Are the writers aware of some of the negative feedback of this season so far?

Aramis and Porthos scenes were my favorite. The relationships between all of the characters are great, but they had the most comedic moments. We're still early into the season so I'm going to have faith that it will turn around and have the humor that we all loved so much. I just want to see Anne not look at Aramis with such disdain. I know she can't give him doe eyes, but a little sympathy would be nice. We were told we'd learn more about his past so I wonder if that's what the next episode will be about since it seems to be Aramis centric. I hate that we have to wait 2 weeks to see it!
No matter my disappointment at the moment, it's still my favorite show=)

I thought I'd share a few videos with everyone to put a smile on your faces. They have some great stuff on YT and these are some of my favorites.

  95. From UK TV Ratings on Twitter "The Musketeers drew just 3.39m/14.5%, its lowest audience to date and BBC1's lowest rated programme between 5.15 and 11.25pm yesterday."

    ReplyDelete
  96. Well, let's hope that isn't an indication of how the rest of the season is gonna go... :( And let's also hope the Live+7 numbers look a whole better than this...

    ReplyDelete
  97. Jessica has responded to tweets about the side-lining of the Musketeers and she's replied that early episodes have to set up various storylines for later in the series and that later episodes - including episode 4 - will see the Muskereers be more central..

I've also noticed that male critics seemed to quite like the episode, possibly because they're less likely to be emotionally invested in certain characters or certain story-lines and just enjoy the episode for what it is. It might be sexist to say that but it's possibly true.

    ReplyDelete
  98. That's very encouraging to hear from Jessica. Maybe they just needed to use up one episode for this sort of exposition to make the rest hold together. I'll never be persuaded it was done in the right way - so much fell down it can't be attributed solely to the necessity of setting up future episodes - but it's sounding and looking like 4 might get things back on track.

And if there's a promise of less heavy Court action and more shots of the boys running, I'll stick with it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  99. Hmm, I think it's still got that Chivalry Romantic vibe going on, more so than last year. Heroes are doing the right thing for the common man against the havoc the bad guys are causing. So in that regard it's doing exactly what Jess has promised I'd say.

The only problem for me is with this episode they tried to make a secondary character a hero too by shoehorning in story in a clumsy way. She could have solved the problem in a far easier way without resorting to such drastic measures as kidnapping the Dauphin. She then ended up being held in higher regard than the leads of the show at court, despite doing completely the wrong thing. It didn't work, too clumsy. It also makes any future character development unrealistic too - why would you trust someone who would go behind your back like that rather than approach you and discuss it first?

Constance deserves better than this imo. There's plenty she could be doing at court, growing and earning the trust and friendship of others instead. They managed it fine with her character last season with the guys, so it will happen at court with Anne, etc too I guess. If we seen that happening before she attempted to take matters in to her own hands then any forgiveness as it may have worked would be more understandable perhaps.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I've noticed that certain types of fans are liking the show more than others too to some extent during my chats on social media. There's people like me who are loving the bad guys who are more or less happy, d'Artagnan fans have liked the first two a lot as he featured heavily and was very heroic and Porthos fans were pretty happy last night. The royal couple fans are also happy with their bigger roles this year, and then there are the more general fans, which I guess many of the critics fall into, who are liking the stories and action, who are happy with the mix.

The fans who seem to be more unhappy generally tend to be the shippers and the Athos/Aramis fans from my anecdotal observance. Which I guess is down to those characters not having had an episode where they have been at the forefront yet. Or like last night's Constance plot, it didn't work. I can understand that frustration totally. It is a large cast and there is a lot to set up.

    ReplyDelete
  101. That's not brilliant, but not as bad as I feared. Benidorm had a massive episode yesterday with an old (favourite) character returning so I was worried that it would drop a lot more than that.

My real concern now is that we are potentially looking at another break after episode 4, this time for two weeks. There is rugby on the 6th, and then apparently another football round on the 13th I've been told.... :/

    ReplyDelete
  102. Just watched the episode and i have to agree with all of you in the previous comments... too much stuff for one episode and too much stuff happening off screen.
This time the two storyline of the episode were independents from one another and that created a problem for the entire narrative. It was a bit unrealistic for me to have Aramis away in an episode half baby centric, and at the same time we still can't undestrand what Anne is thinking for sure. She can't really approach Aramis in any way, i get it, but there's a need of clarification here. This lack of communication is slowly unnerving me. I have to remind myself that we are only at the third episode.
But okay, we got the message. The Queen is feeling alone, now more than ever, and Rochefort has become what the Cardinal was for the King. So, from now on, i expect more from the episodes because it seems like the bases have been planted.
Speaking of the characters... Rochefort is still on top of my preferences. He is living in his own world, and now i'm convinced that he is really Queen sided. French or Spanish... he will choose the side who let him be with the Queen. All his decisions are based on her. It's like he idealaized her a lot, and when he will start to suspect of Aramis i easily imagine him get crazy like Othello.
That will be super intriguing to watch. (And from what Santiago and Marc have said in interviews, i can't wait.)
Marguerite is still on the side, i don't think she have any kind of relationship with the Queen, or even Constance. She's just with them, doing her job and being a little bored at the same time.
The Constance baby plot was... Meh. It was a necessity for push the Queen towards Rochefort, so now i'm ready for everything in the future. They are building up a lot of angst.
And Milady... wow. I think she has to bee really careful. The king is pretty volatile and Rochefort can plot with her just like he can wake up in the morning and decide to shoot her. So if we get to see her worried, i will enjoy it. She can even go to Athos for help or mutual exchange of information.

And i just hate this pause. -.-

    ReplyDelete
  103. The Anne being alone plot bothers me because that was what Constance was supposed to be for! We have yet to see a meaningful scene between them. Constance was supposed to be her confidant, but so far she is not much of anything. She just follows her around and is told to be quiet. I hope this changes next week.

    ReplyDelete
  104. It really isn't looking good right now is it? The BBC made a monumentally bad decision moving the series to Friday nights. Given that we're now looking at more and lengthier breaks in the schedule, I just don't know how it's sustainable. They under-promoted the series to begin with. In my BBC region they didn't even announce that it wouldn't be on next week. After the promo they simply said, "That's at the same time next week." Eh, no it's not. I think if we're heading for a three week break, the series and more erratic scheduling, it's going to get completely crucified in the overnight ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Wow, we couldn't even beat Room 101! I don't know what to say about that.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I am enjoying many things about it. I love how d'Artagnan has been featured. And I am highly enjoying Gage. I also enjoy seeing Milady out of control and having to fight back to the top. Rochefort is also such a delight.
I just wish the Anne/Constance story was a little better. I was so excited about that. But next week's pics look to have them interact more. I also was hoping by this time to have a clearer idea of Constance's marriage. I need more of Bonacieux for me to really root for Constance to leave him. And I need more longing or I feel as if she doesn't have a reason to leave other than a "boring marriage."
I also wish Athos had more to do. I feel as if he is in the background quite a bit. But I also feel that Treville does nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  107. It's ridiculous. That's what sports channels are for!!!! Or heaven forbid, BBC2....

It would be interesting to know Jessica's thoughts on the schedule breaks too.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I was a bit confused by the laundry scene. Were we meant to assume Bonacieux had led Rochefort to Constance? If so, how did he know she was there in the first place? Unless their conversation was outside the laundry and he guessed where she was going, but then wouldn't he wonder why she was taking someone else's baby into a laundry at night? They lost me there. Further exchange between Bonacieux and Rochefort might have helped to explain the sequence of events.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Agree. Now we need things to evolve and not come out of the blue.

Right now i was rewatching the episode, and it's clear that boys and girls had two different and indipendent storyline this time, maybe because in S1 the fandom was hoping for girls and royals to have more time on the screen. And okay, i agree because i enjoy them a lot... but, still, the result was a bit messy. :/
Now i can't wait for episode 4. Damn football.

    ReplyDelete
  110. New here but have been reading you all for quite sometime and really enjoying the discussions. About Constance, her entire story at the castle is just not working for me and I think it is because it just does not make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Except the BBC is going to show the Amazon-funded series of Ripper Steeet further down the line, lol...

Maybe how much money a show makes the BBC is almost as important as overnight viewing figures .

    ReplyDelete
  112. I agree, I think for most of the males out there the show has been just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I have pretty much liked the show so far. I do think this was the weakest episode so far but the only part that really did not work for me was the baby story.

    ReplyDelete
  114. As a fan of Constagnan, the series has yielded pretty much nothing for me so far but I can live with that as there's much more that I enjoy about The Musketeers. That isn't and wasn't my issue with last nights episode and with some of what we've seen so far. I like Rochefort and believe he's a breath of fresh air. He is however, getting a ridiculous amount of air time and set up, infinitely more than Capaldi got last year and the balance isn't right. Personally, I'm loving Perales and would like more of him. The kidnapping is already a tired set up and we're going to see more of it as the series progresses. For goodness sake, even Roger the Horse has been abducted.😄 The Constance sub plot was illogical nonsense that was badly written and worse, it wasn't even entertaining. Jessica spoke of developing characters other than the Musketeers. How was Constance developed last night? How are they developing Marguerite? Other than finding her the equivalent of slightly moving wallpaper, I know nothing more about her after episode three than I did after episode one. We got some heavy handed foreshadowing for the wonderful Porthos but the real positive of the night was Antonia Thomas. Some of the writing for the other characters was embarassingly bad. The scene where the King decides not to hang the perpetually "Poor Constance" was a total clunker. Some of Rochefort's dialogue was equally awful. Once again they fell into the trap of doing too much with too little time. The Porthos/Alaman/Samira story would have been more than enough and should have been brilliant. I think everyone here knows how much I love this series, as the vast majority of us do. We have always tried our best to find the positive and as I've said the episide had it's moments, largely with Samira. However, I'm like to think I'm a fan not a sicophant. It gives me no pleasure and it's unfortunate that the episide didn't work for me, it's great if it did for others but what's really healthy about this forum is that we can express our views, whatever they may be.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Well Tom did say in more than one interview that what he is thinking and feeling is not shown on screen and so when he finally reacts to Milady we are all going to be shocked at his reaction. But I agree I would like to have had just a little Athos and Treville the last three episodes. I did love that we got Porthos in episode 3 and I loved him with Samara

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think any potential series 3 is going to be based on two things - the consolidated viewing figures and international sales.

I still think the show would have a home on primetime BBC 2, where overnights of between 3-4 million is seen as perfectly acceptable. Torchwood got moved around in all kinds of ways, so I think it could work for The Musketeers too

    ReplyDelete
  117. That's a very good point and illustrates perfectly how poor the writing was last night. I assume we are meant to think he led Richefort to Cibstance having been threatened with the noose. However I've no idea how he would have know where she was goung unless it it was a common place to take a sickly child, as seems to have been suggested. Alternatively perhaps he followed then there but I have no idea why. He certainly didn't try to help his wife in her hour of need. Something that would have been unthinkable had it been D'Artagnan.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Whilst getting push ally and verbally abused.😒

    ReplyDelete
  119. It worries me that the BBC seems to be doing their damndest to make it as hard as possible for the show to succeed. They seem more interested in selling it abroad than giving it a chance back home. I noticed the same with Torchwood. A fantastic show they messed up by moving it around, taking the story out of Cardiff, going international and making it all-but American. Much as I appreciate the international fandom - heaven knows we need it, and they're an essential, enthusiastic crowd - it does seem sometimes as if selling abroad is more important to BBC than making the loyal, core original viewers in the UK happy as well. Downton was another, although that's ITV of course. Once it became 'cameo of the week' and 'let's see how many Americans we can crowbar into the script' to keep the US fans happy, I stopped watching.

The Musketeers should never have been put on a Friday night, and if they'd firmly decided on the move, why not wait a few months until they could give it an uninterrupted run instead of bringing it back so massively early in January? We've all mentioned the lack of promos, which I think is the craziest thing of all. I saw countless ads for Death in Paradise and some stupid kitchen-sink thing about a couple of women, but only one for the Musketeers an HOUR before it actually aired.

After all the work they've out into producing it, why are they being so dismissive and unbothered? It doesn't make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Let's hope so because UK viewing figures clearly aren't going to save this thing.

  121. I've said before that I fall into the D'Artagnan camp and possibly even the Athos camp - though I love the other characters too :) especially the friendship between Aramis and Porthos, hence my complaint about their lack of banter so far this year - so I was happy with episodes 1 and 2 in that regard and totally expected him to have limited screentime in episode 3. however I was still surprised at how little the Musketeers as a unit were used last night and I can certainly understand the frustration of Aramis and Athos fans right now..

As far as Constagnan go, because Constance is the woman D'Artagnan loves, I don't want their love-story to feel second-rate because it's lacking passion, screentime and real development.

  122. / I assume we are meant to think he led Richefort to Cibstance having been threatened with the noose./

Yes, that would have made sense if they'd ended the shot with Rochefort and Bonacieux still looking at each other, with Rochefort waiting for an answer. But Rochefort made the threat then walked off, so it really wasn't clear that Bonacieux then ran after him and offered up Constance to save his own neck.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Exactly. The whole sequence made no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Lol, you really weren't impressed last night.... :)

Jessica has said that the Musketeers will be more central in episode 4 - and Constance is getting out and about again, as well as potentially getting close to d'Artagnan again - so the next episode should be a big improvement if nothing else.

    ReplyDelete
  125. You spotted that huh?😄 Nope. Not a happy bunny. The last thing they need to do at the moment is lose the quality.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I think what separates fans from casual viewers is how emotionally invested you get in a show and its characters..

    ReplyDelete
  127. I think Rochefort's constant bullying of Constance WILL be significant re-d'Artagnan further down the line, since the two men traditionally have big sword fights that don't end well for Rochefort.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Well I am in the US and that is the way things are going here. Gone are the days of old fashion TV. You sign on to the internet and watch your shows.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Just to mention it again because everyone keeps saying how Margeruite hasn't been anything more than decorative so far (which is so true): she DID get outed as a Spanish spy last night. So one can only hope she's gonna have a point sometime soon....might be that she's the one to tell the Spanish about the whole Aramis/Queen/baby thing (....if there will ever BE anything to tell...)

    ReplyDelete
  130. I agree and they really are not following the book (at least I do not see it) or else Milady will be biting the dust also right along with her.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I think it says it al, that I missed that completely. I must have been putting the wash on at the time. This may literally be the only reason for a re-watch.😉 Scene please?

    ReplyDelete
  132. I missed it to, now I have to go back and rewatch

    ReplyDelete
  133. Yep, to do it they'd have to wipe out Rochefort, Constance sand Milady on one go. We'd be talking Game of Thrones Red Wedding levels of cast carnage.😄

    ReplyDelete
  134. When Rochefort is talking to Perales and tells him the Dauphin is sick, Perales says "Margeruite should have known that!", which I interpreted at least as "she should have told me" - and why would she do that if she wasn't working for him?

    ReplyDelete
  135. Nice catch. The use of her first name too. Intriguing.

    ReplyDelete
  136. You know, whenever you say things like that, it makes me thing they were set up to fail, because this is getting ridiculous. We'll be done in summer with that show if they start having breaks after each episode now...

    ReplyDelete
  137. I do think the Rochefort/Constance tension is going to be useful later for both sides of her arc. I think it's going to create problems with d'Artagnan but I also think it is going to create problems with Anne. It could be used as a means to show Anne that Rochefort isn't entirely trusted. I do think we will see Constance show some guts and protect Anne from him in some way.
In the mean time, I do appreciate her not running to d'Artagnan immediately to complain about his treatment of her. I prefer Constance to stand up for herself first!

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'm excited about the Milathos scene that was teased in next episode's trailer!

    ReplyDelete
  139. I agree with your previous comments about Constance and Anne. Why didn't Constance pull Anne aside and suggest trying something else like the steam? Why did she have to kidnap him? Her whole arguments at the end about the treatments not working and such could have been explained to Anne. I was somewhat expecting that to be the case in the episode - Anne allowing Constance to take the baby in secret or something.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Ah you bring up good point- too much time at court. That definitely has been an issue for me as well. One thing I forgot to mention that we should probably be keeping in mind is that it's still the start of the season so they are probably just setting up arcs which is why things may have felt rushed and unnatural. Hopefully next week and so on it'll begin to stray away from doing so.

I don't mind the more serious tone all i wish is for the future episodes to be less packed so we can actually see any fallout from events/characters reacting to situations instead of just moving onto the next scenario.

The next episode does look more interesting, can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  141. Well I agree with more or less all the comments that have been written! Not my favourite episode but am going to re watch it again later to see if I enjoy it more!
Really, really want to see the same sort of rapport between the boys that we got in Season 1 and I really want Constance to up her game! She was brave to state her opinion in front of the King but really? Would that have been allowed to happen at Court?? She has faded into the background imo :-(
The teaser for the next episode for us Constagnan fans with the near kiss had better NOT be another dream sequence - one was enough thank you! I am hoping that what Jessica says does pan out for the rest of the series......... Season 1 was brilliant and after waiting so long for Season 2 I really hope that 'the only way is up!
We've got the handle on Rochefort and his Anne obsession, we get Louis is disgruntled with the Musketeers so let's get the focus back on track please!!!

    ReplyDelete
  142. You sound honest. You're perfectly entitled to your critique. You love it enough to want it to be it's very best. Last night wasn't it's best. That doesn't mean there aren't great times to come.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Completely missed that - will catch when I re-watch shortly! :)

    ReplyDelete
  144. You could be right about male critics, as my hubby really liked the episode. He's becoming quite a fan! :)

    ReplyDelete
  145. It was nice to see the lovely Ed Stoppard as the Dauphin's physician. He's a really good actor. I'm surprised they used someone of his calibre so little. How much more interesting might it have been to see Constance developing a friendship with the physician. He might have encouraged and empowered her and for a time, provided a contrast to the patronising behaviour and apathy she receives from her husband and the childish petulance she recently received from D'Artagnan . Perhaps they could have worked together to save the baby and indeed the physician's life and in doing so, we could have seen Constance getting her self-confidence back. It might have been fun to see D'Artagnan feel a pang of jealousy if he saw the two together. It would have had a nice parallel with Lucie in episode one. We would then have had a Constance more akin to the spirited, determined and intelligent young woman we saw in series one. Also one not afraid to forge new alliances and play to her strengths.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I think she desperately want to hold on to this unique opportunity to work with the Queen. It be useful though to show that the two women have forged a genuine friendship and what that's based on. I also get the feeling that, at this point, she doesn't really see D'Artagnan as her champion any more. He's clearly attempting to reach out to her with the comment about the Dauphin being in safe hands but you sense that she's still not quite ready to be receptive to him again. My hope is that episode four will at least demonstrate that they miss each other deeply. I think that could be a real turning point for them.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Not sure whether this has already been posted but Jess tweeted earlier today to fans about a 3rd season and she said "You may be lucky and just get one..." - we need some good news, so hope this cheers people up! :)

    ReplyDelete
  148. I think Constance is desperately trying to fight against her feelings for d'Artagnan and purely be professional. I think something huge will need to happen in order for her to give in to her feelings and let d'Artagnan know what she truly feels. I think we'll going to see a slow build up of abuse (verbal/physical) from Rochefort towards Constance which will end in a massive fight between d'Artagnan and Rochefort. I'm rather glad that Constance hasn't told d'Aratagnan about Rochefort yet. I think it will be better if he witnesses it for himself!

    ReplyDelete
  149. Just got back from a family get together and we were all discussing Marc Warren as Rochefort and how we love him as the bad guy. Think you hit the nail on the head about your analysis of the different types of fans. Personally, it wasn't my favourite of the 3 episodes but I still was ok with it overall and will re-watch again. However, I can understand people's frustrations over certain aspects of the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Yes! I really liked him too! I'd like to see him show up again if the story called for it.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I totally missed that! When did that happen?!

    ReplyDelete
  152. At this rate the BBC America episodes will catch up to the UK's.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I concur.....not enough Anne and Aramis.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I rewatched it and realised what was weird about the prostitute Anne scene: Rochefort poses in his sparkly outfit like he's about to start a Strictly routine and is waiting for the music. I love Marc Warren but that was seriously, SERIOUSLY hamming it up. I know Rochefort is meant to be a few sticks short of a bundle anyway, but that was just too much for me.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I think it's safe to say that if D'Artagnan witnesses Rochefort laying a hand on Constance, Rochefort's a dead man.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I've just watched it again and he says 'Madrid' should know this, not 'Marguerite'. Subtitles say it too. :) It was just the accent!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Ah darn. I thought things just got interesting. That doesn't happen until episode eight.....kidding....I think...😜

    ReplyDelete
  158. That's encouraging to hear. Cheers for that, I'm only now just getting tome to catch up with things since getting home.

    ReplyDelete
  159. There are some guest characters who are in multiple episodes, so you may see Ed Stoppard, and others, popping up in episodes through the season. I think I would have preferred to see Constance making friends with him more than what ultimately happened too. I just don't understand why she had to act alone rather than work with others, it's not the Constance we know from last season.

    ReplyDelete
  160. His accent is a little thick, but yes he says Madrid.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Hi there, welcome to the site :)

I would have preferred to see some more of her bonding with Anne, that's what I would have expected to see happen at the start of the season between them.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Possibly, her working on her own is to prove d'Artagnan that she isn't a 'coward'?

I hope we get to see Ed Stoppard again as well. Hopefully, we will see him becoming friends with Constance. Seeing a jealous d'Artagnan would be good! :)

    ReplyDelete
  163. I don't think Bonacieux could have brought Rochefort to is laundry. He had no idea who the baby was and doesn't know Rochefort is, so would have no way of approaching him I would have thought. We also see Rochefort putting two and two together when he realises that Constance hasn't come back since he saw her leave the night before, just before he has Marguerite arrested.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Hi Lucy, welcome to the site :)

I think they are going to have to take a break too at this rate, or the BBC are going to have to double bank a couple one week. The scheduling is a bit of a joke at the moment :s

    ReplyDelete
  165. It's ridiculous isn't it, I have no idea what is going on :s

    ReplyDelete
  166. I can't see it moving to BBC 2, it's not really their kind of niche drama type show, it would change quite a bit of they did I think. Torchwood went from BBC 3, to BBC 2, to BBC 1. Shows can go upwards like that if they become popular, but they don't get demoted down the other way - it's a straight cancel or renewal. I'm still leaning more towards renewal at present, but only due to the international interest. I just can't believe how it's being treated at present :s

    ReplyDelete
  167. To be fair, it wasn't the BBC that took Torchwood out of Cardiff, that was solely down to RTD and Julie Gardner who both wanted that move and got the funding from Starz to make that season.

Totally agree that The Musketeers should never have been put on a Friday night though, that was a terrible decision which I just can't understand at all. It's core audience isn't at home to watch it, for a start.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Rochefort working out it's Constance makes sense, but I'm still not sure how he guessed she was at the laundry. I doubt he'd have known about the steam cure without someone suggesting it to him, and since he went there *after* asking Bonacieux where she was, it doesn't seem like he'd worked it out at the point either. Most odd!

It's possible the two men have already met, if Bonacieux still has the Red Guard uniform contract he got from the Cardinal last year. Now Rochefort is in charge, he's essentially paying the bills, so Bonacieux as a service provider must at least be aware he's replaced the Cardinal.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Well I assume he just searched their property until he found her?

    ReplyDelete
  170. There's barely been any of them so far. I hope that changes....

    ReplyDelete
  171. For me, it's the fact that he did absolutely nothing to help her that was so telling. We know he's the coward in the Bonacieux family and it would, in fairness, be understandable that he might be frightened under the circumstances but to not even plead for mercy for his wife, or to react in any way when she was struck, was very telling of the complete disconnection between these two. Indeed it was clear as Constance spoke to him earlier that she has zero regard for him. It really isn't a marriage at all but a sheer endurance to the death. A miserable scenario for them both really.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Ah, yes, I was thinking it was just 'a' laundry in town, rather than one specifically connected to him. That would make more sense.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Must say, I didn't catch that either.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I think Marguerite is being very naive. Which is something French women at court were most definitely not in those days, so it's a little hard to work out what her story is really.

    ReplyDelete
  175. The pacing was definitely off I thought too, I strongly suspect that some scenes were either trimmed or cut entirely due to over running its timeslot unfortunately. It was a very ambitious story to try and cram into one episode.

I liked the Rochefort scene with the prostitute too, though I know some found it icky. The guy lives in a complete dream world, and I think that it's important to see that about him. I don't think that we need quite so much time with him and the real Anne though. The corridor scene was good, the camera POV was very effective in making him seem stalkery as it approached her with his voiceover. The bedroom one could have been cut/trimmed imo.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I feel the same way. (I seem to always agree with you LOL) I thought I was going to love the baby storyline too. Aramis just seems to lurk in the hallways and Queen Anne seems indifferent to him. Season 1 ended so romantically in my eyes....I was hoping for more of that. I'm trying to stay optimistic.
Also, there was humor in season 1 pretty much from the get go. It's almost completely gone now.

    ReplyDelete
  177. It does sound as though there is a small army of nurses to take care of the Dauphin, we just haven't seen them. I certainly get the impression that she would rather they dealt with him whenever she can spend time with her handsome new beau.

The fact that she can't plainly see his interest in the Dauphin leads me to believe that she is very naive, which is unusual for French court. Paris was the centre for 'courtly love' in Europe at the time, it was something everyone participated in and knew about. She is a bit of an enigma to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Thanks Sandi....I'm loving it here!!

    ReplyDelete
  179. I certainly would have thought that given his profile, we'd see more of him than we did. As you say, he may well be one of those characters that we'll encounter again later.

    ReplyDelete
  180. I did like this episode, but I do agree with a lot of the comments I've read here. It did feel as if there was a little too much going on for the amount of time we were given. I do wish there would have been a little more of the Musketeers themselves, though I did enjoy the King Louis and Milady scenes. I'm interested as to where that is headed and what she wants. I do feel as if Rochefort is taking up the screen a tad more than he should, but they've really made me hate him and I can't wait to see him get his! I also feel that they could have perhaps left us hanging with Constance -- it would have given more incentive to watch again since we're headed for a week off. I did love that she saved the baby and I did feel like it was in character for her to charge forward and try to do what she could and I loved her bravery in that, though she really should have thought it out a little and perhaps tried to bring the idea up with Anne -- maybe would have agreed to it. I was really hoping that there would be a friendship between Constance and Anne but it really doesn't seem to be headed in that direction. I thought after Constance was right last week about Anne's letter she might have trusted her more. And Anne's scene with Rochefort was so disappointing. I am an Aramis and Anne shipper so I have that bias -- I wish we knew whether or not it was real between them. I think for him it was, but I wish we could get a clue from her. I really, really, really hope that is upcoming. Anyway, I love other parts of the episode -- wish there was more Athos, but I did love the Porthos moments and Samira. She would make a good edition to the cast. I think she really helped lay down Porthos's story for the season though which will be about his identity. I really wonder when Treville will tell him, because I know it's coming!

    ReplyDelete
  181. Well exactly. It's not like the palace wouldn't have had a laundry of it's own, nor was she scared to speak up in front of anyone about her opinions. So why not just tell them what she thought could be done? Surely the doctor would have realised that the steam would have helped. The threat of losing his head due to no change in the Dauphin's condition would have meant he would have given it a go if nothing else, he was all out of other ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  182. I completely agree with this. It's the sheer nothingness of Bonacieux that I struggle with. I have no idea what motivates him beyond social ambition and vanity. I have no clue if he genuinely loves or cares for Constance, or ever did, or if indeed their union was ever in any way a full marriage. Clearly from her comments last night, they're not having sex. Maybe understandable post affair but the fact that they'd been married for a considerable period of time up to the point where she met D'Artagnan and yet there are still no children, also mitigates against it. From her dreams of D'Artagnan, clearly the physical fulfilment she got from him, is one of the things she longs for and has come as something of a revelation to her. I don't really see the point of continuing to have the character in the story if he serves such little meaningful purpose. I'm also not entirely comfortable with a character that it seems I'm meant to do little more than respond to with contempt and mutter, "Oh sod off!" every time he appears on screen. Surely he can serve more purpose to the narrative than that.

    ReplyDelete
  183. The thing I liked about the Porthos story was that we know so much more about it than him, which makes it kind of tragic. We know that his faith and trust is going to be broken at some point, and it's not going to be a good time for him at all. I am so intrigued to find out what it's all about, I hope we don't have to wait too much longer either, I do love watching Howie play that side of him :)

    ReplyDelete
  184. Glad to hear it. We're a chatty bunch, lol

    ReplyDelete
  185. That's certainly encouraging :) I'm assuming she wouldn't say that unless she was fairly certain we'll be getting a third series, even if she can't be totally certain. Maybe she knows something we don't.

This show is too good to end after only two series...

    ReplyDelete
  186. No more broken hearted D'Artagnan for me.

Constagnan are just breaking each other's hearts and at some point, that has to stop, before it becomes tiresome and I feel like reaching into the TV and strangling them both.. :) Or maybe I'll start shipping D'Artagnan and Athos, since d'Art's scarf-pulling scene in episode 2 was a touch sexy.

On a more serious note, I wonder if Constance will deliberately not tell d'Artagnan about all the abuse she's been getting at the hands of Rochefort, partly because she believes she can handle her own affairs and partly because she'd be worried about how he'd react - risk getting kicked out of the Musketeers etc.. It doesn't say much about their friendship if Constance isn't confiding in him, so I wonder if her silence is a delibrate move on the part of the writers?

    ReplyDelete
  187. I'm with you on that. A little pang of misplaced jealousy is one thing but I too am sick of the heartache. The promo for episode four is the first time in a while that we've glimpsed that genuine longing between them. They just look like they miss each other desperately, as they move slow towards each other. Enough already! Get them back together and let's get this thing moving.

    ReplyDelete
  188. Definitely positive news. It sounds like she might be hearing some encouraging mood music. Personally, I hope that in addition to a third series the production team and cast get an apology for the way this series has been treated in terms of scheduling and promotion. Sometimes it makes me wonder if the BBC would be quite so dismissive if it wasn't public money but was entirely private backers funding their productions?

    ReplyDelete
  189. I think it's less to do with not wanting to confide and more that she's trying to protect them both by adding distance. She hinted as much when she told D'Artagnan he shouldn't have interfered because her husband would 'hate them more' for it. In her new place at court the stakes are so much higher, and as she's already learned, the consequences of the wrong words or actions can be devastating. Bad enough for herself, but she'll know the Musketeers are in the King's bad books and her pulling D'Artagnan into her current predicament, even as a friend, only has the potential to make things harder for him too. Of course he'd disagree, and will likely go ballistic when he finds out the abuse she's been getting, but for now I respect her for keeping it to herself as it shows she's trying not to rely on a man - probably for the first time in her life - and stand by her own actions and decisions, again proving she's certainly not a coward. No doubt D'Artagnan will find out at some point, but it doesn't need to be just yet.

And yes, the scarf-pulling scene was a shipper's dream! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  190. Ah, sorry for the confusion then. I kept understanding Marguerite, even in the rewatch, so I was quite certain (and wondering why no one else was talking about it...)

    ReplyDelete
  191. Just re-watched the episode on iPlayer and wondered what people made of Rochefort's confession to Anne that he loved her. I know he was very quick to cover up the confession by adding "as any subject loves his queen...". It's difficult to know how she would have reacted if he hadn't added this, especially with her emotions all over the place because of the Dauphin. Just wondering whether people think Anne has any true feelings for Rochefort, other than him being a friend.

    ReplyDelete
  192. They definitely need an apology - Fridays aren't the right day for it, especially if it's going to be interrupted so much with football, rugby, etc. Also, once again they have completed under promoted it! I've only seen the promo twice on TV, so it is not surprising that people aren't tuning in.

    ReplyDelete
  193. I have only watched it once but I think she was just in too much shock and worry for her baby to even really register what he said.

    ReplyDelete
  194. I thought she looked momentarily disconcerted when he said it. I don't think she see Rochefort in a romantic/sexual light. She loves him but platonically. It actually makes his intentions even more of a violation. She's made herself vulnerable to him and trusts him. Whilst he has used this as a means of ingratiating himself with her for his own purposes.

    ReplyDelete
  195. What has astonished me is that in addition to the poor pre-launch promotion, there hasn't really been much trailing between episodes. I don't think I saw one trailer for Friday night's episide, during last week. It's like the show has been abandoned to it's fate. It's totally bewildering.

    ReplyDelete
  196. It was interesting I thought that when D'artagnan approached her to ask what was going on, she struggled even to make eye contact with him. He on the other hand was like an eager puppy, desperate for a sign of affection, or even interest. As he walked away shaking his head, it was as though he realised that try as he might, he can't get any traction with her.

    ReplyDelete
  197. It was easily misheard with that accent of his!
