The Librarians - Series Premiere - Advance Preview: "Thoroughly Entertaining"
7 Dec 2014
Reviews RF The LibrariansThe Librarians has all the qualities to make the show a hit with viewers, and I am hoping it does.
Premiering December 7th with the first two episodes back to back, fans of the films should have no problem adjusting in to watching the show, as the concept is pretty much the same, which is for a Librarian to find artifacts. The only difference is there are a few new faces. Even if you haven't watched the films that is no reason to not give the show a shot. With a blend of Drama, Mystery, action and just about everything SC-FI related, the show has a bit of everything for all fans.
Having watched, and enjoyed most of Falling Skies, I was happily surprised to learn that Noah will be in more than the two episodes he signed on for. He is the centrepiece of the show; the cast work great with him, it will be interesting to see how the future episodes look without him. Noah did a great job stepping back into the shoes of Flynn Carsen, and bringing the quirkiness, and intelligence we loved about Flynn back with him. I am hoping once Falling Skies ends Noah will sign on as a series regular, as he brought so much to the first episodes. He really gets the show going.
Aside from Flynn, we got introduced to 4 other characters that were not in the films. Rebecca Romijn plays the role of Eve Baird, the leader of a counter-terrorism squad for NATO. Baird first encounters Flynn whilst on a mission of her own. She later receives a letter which is slipped under her door inviting her to become guardian of the Librarian. When former applicants for the Librarian job are being killed off, Flynn is tasked with finding the 3 who are still alive. Flynn wants Eve to leave as he doesn't want her help, but she is persistent, and refuses to go. He eventually accepts that he is stuck with her. They both start of a little edgy toward one another, but by the end of the episode you will see how they both relate to each other, and share a lot more similarities than differences.
Flynn and Baird track down each separate Librarian applicant. Each of them are unique in their own way, and have their own set of expertise. Christian Kane plays the role of Jacob Stone, who is a genius when it comes to all things art, architecture, and history related. Stone is equally skilled at fighting in which he demonstrates in the episode, as well as just how smart he is. Stone also adds some comedic value to the episode, especially in some scenes with Baird where they also share some friendly banter whilst in a compromising situation. We also have Lindy Booth who plays the role of Cassandra Cillian, who has a gift of synesthesia – the ability to link all five senses to her memory. She is like your Claudia of Warehouse 13 only 10 times smarter. We also have John Kim as Ezekiel Jones who is a master thief. Once the team is assembled its their job to retrieve an artifact called the crown of King Arthur. By the end of the episode you will be in shock from what happens, it ends on a cliffhanger, and trust me you will want to watch the second part. Just to tease you all; Flynn is betrayed by someone he thought he could trust.
Throughout the episode there was some colourful banter between them, which shows the bond they already share. The chemistry between the actors is remarkable; it's as if they have already been together on the show for a couple of seasons. The dialogue is fairly simple to digest, with no puzzling brain teasers or lengthy wording that a younger viewer might not understand. The show has something for all ages, young or old. You may need to crank up your volume though when Cassandra is speaking, as she tends to speak extremely fast especially when she is in the zone. The dialogue though can at times come across as cheesy which isn't a bad thing as it made the interactions between characters more enjoyable.
The episode was also heavily action packed, it was not get you of your seat worthy, but none the less each fight scene always ensured that it was thoroughly entertaining to watch with them using different artifacts or weapons to take down the opponent. I was overwhelmed by just how great the episode was, from the fun puzzles they were trying to figure out to the different artifacts that were shown. It was a joy to watch, and was refreshing to take a break from the hard gritty dramas such as Sons of Anarchy. This show wasn't made to be serious; it was made to entertain the viewer with an enjoyable plot line, that doesn't take itself to seriously, which is exactly what it does. Familiar faces Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin also feature in the episode, but were only in it for a few brief scenes, but it was nice to see faces from the movies.
I wont go into any detail on what happens in the second episode, as its a two parter with the first leaving it on a cliffhanger. A few things I will say though is we meet another character called Jenkins, and by the end of the second episode it gives us insight into the direction the show is going in. You will also find out what is going to be happening with Flynn, given that he wont be in all episodes. Overall, the first two episodes were a great starting point for the show, and sets it up nicely for the weeks ahead.
Summary
It was a jammed packed hour of delightful television. It is definitely a show to watch out for. It's probably for me, one of the best new shows of 2014. It really had me hooked from the start , that I went straight onto watching the second episode after. It ticks all the right boxes. It was action packed, the dialogue was fun, the cast have a strong bond, and great chemistry. The plot was also great, and not to serious. It really was a great opener. I really hope you all will give it a shot!
9/10

ReplyDeleteOh can't wait sound amazing just make me miss Warehouse 13 so much
ReplyDeleteI too miss Warehouse 13! Both show share so many similarities, I think you will find it very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteThx for the share! This Kaniac will be watching, can't wait to have Christian Kane back on TV!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you will be watching! I too am glad to have Christian Kane back on TV, I loved him on Leverage. He is also excellent in this, and his character came across really well.
ReplyDeleteis the traitor someone from the movies so those of us who haven't seen the movies won't recognize them or will they be new to all fans
ReplyDeleteI will be more inclined to watch if Noah was in it all the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great review! I'm a Huge Christian Kane fan, he's the most under-rated, under used, actor out there! Better than any of the recent crop of A-listers! I can hardly contain my excitement, and waiting for December 7th is almost painful! With this cast of characters, The Librarians is a sure fire hit!
ReplyDeleteHe is signed on for 4 out of the 10 episodes, I would love to see more of him. I imagine we will once Falling Skies ends this year. They actually do cover the fact that he wont be in every episode, which you will see in the closing minutes of the second episode.
ReplyDeleteThe person who betrays them is new to all fans.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you liked it, and am even more glad you will be watching! The cast is very good, and I agree Christian Kane is very underrated he deserves some more recognition. I am hoping fans of the movies, and fans of the actors / actresses (Noah, Christian, Rebecca) will all tune in.
ReplyDeleteAlso as its on TNT anything over a 1.0 in the ratings you can probably call it a hit, which I have no doubt it will get that, since the cast is very familiar to a lot of people as well as the films.
Can't wait for this! Looks like it gonna be great! The films were great, though they did get worse as they went on. The original was the best! The 2nd one was OK and the 3rd was very meh.
ReplyDeleteThey do share a lot of similarities, and if you didn't already know Lindy Booth from Relic Hunter is in this.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you will be checking it out, I am sure you wont be disappointed. I actually agree with you about the movies, they slowly started loosing quality. The first was by a mile the best one, I also actually really enjoyed the second one. The third one I didn't like, it felt as if they just made it for the sake of making another one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the preview! Based on what you wrote, I think I’ll give it a go.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Rebecca’s surname is Romijn (rɔːˈmeɪn).
I am glad you will give it a shot. I hope you like it as much as I did! Thanks about the surname, I am always terrible when it comes to names.
ReplyDeleteGreat, I was worried this show wouldn't work but thanks for the preview! Can't wait to watch it. I love Rebecca Romijn (ever since X-Men and Eastwick).
ReplyDeleteoh well not really cool since they betrayed them but cool that fans that didn't see the movies won't be confused
ReplyDeleteI also had the same feelings, especially after loving the movies a lot. I really hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI also really liked Rebecca from X Men! I think she was a better Mystique than Jennifer Lawrence.
I was already excited to see this show, but your review made me even more excited for #TheLibrarians! Yes I'm a Kaniac so having #ChristianKane back on tv doesn't hurt either!
ReplyDeleteGreat, I'm glad! I also am glad Kane is back on TV, loved him on Leverage. He is great in this!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely will be watching!! I have been anxiously waiting to see Christian Kane back on my TV. The Librarians looks like such a fun show for the whole family. The promos are great. They are ones you can watch over and over on YouTube and still smile every time. I totally agree that the cast seems to have amazing chemistry. I predict this show will be around for a long time.
ReplyDeleteWho is this "Finn Carson"? Did he review a Norwegian dub?
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see your a dedicated fan of Flynn :) I just changed his name, I can't belive I was calling him Finn. In a way its close to Flynn ;)
ReplyDeleteI am glad you will be watching, like most of us her were all glad to see Christian back on our screens! I really hope the show does well, its airing during winter which is when everything is on hiatus so fingers crossed the ratings are good.
ReplyDeleteI know this show is going to be great snice it has Christian Kane in it and is created by Dean Devlin and John Rogers who brought us Leverage. This Kaniac has been ready and waiting eagerly for The Librarians to air and Dec 7th cant come fast enough.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people are watching for Christian. I loved him on Leverage, and I loved The Librarian movies so its a dream show for me!
ReplyDeleteReally, really looking forward to the debut of #theLibrarians ! Been waiting for #ChristianKane.. & #DeanDevlin to work together again since #Leverage! This is going to be EPIC!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved the Librarian movies as well and have watched them alot. Having Christian Kane in this series just puts the icing on the cake for me
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy it :) I think you will you like it!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why I'll be tunning into this is because it looks so much like Warehouse 13 and I seriously miss that show!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed... Christian kane is in it.. enough said
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for this show!! It will be nice to have our boy, Christian Kane, back on our tv's. I love the other actors too and think that they make a great team!
ReplyDeleteHeck yes - can't wait!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the write-up! I am anxiously anticipating the premiere of The Librarians on Sunday, the movie series was great and Christian Kane is a long time favorite of mine! Should be awesome!! This Kaniac will be watching, then I assume we all will be! :)
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure a lot of the people who are going to watch this are fans of Christian Kane.
ReplyDeleteThey do make a great team! I think having someone like Christian Kane in it who has a huge following, so I think the show will pull in good numbers for TNT.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you will be watching! Hope you enjoy it :)
ReplyDeleteYour welcome!
ReplyDeleteI think most of The Librarians audience will be fans of Christian Kane. I loved him in Leverage so it was nice to see him back on TV!
Im so looking forward to this! I generally have loads of serious or dark shows and one or two light ones, OUAT used to be one of the light shows but it's certainly changed (and I love it!). The Flash and Warehouse 13 just didn't work for me but The Librarians looks perfect! I loved the movies. My only worry is it's clashing with OUAT :/ I'd feel much better if it was on at 9. OUAT finishes soon I know but the beginning is important to catch viewers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the article :) It'll be nice to see some familiar faces from the movies even just for a short while. As for the rest of the cast I think they did a great job, they seem perfect and just from the trailer it does look like they've known each other for ages!
Be sure to keep an eye out next week for SpoilerTV's roundtable discussion on the first two episodes!
ReplyDeleteI know I too watch OUAT, and I can tell the first episode going up against that will affect the ratings, but there is a lot of excitement on twitter about the show, and Christian Kane has a huge following so I think it will be fine.
ReplyDeleteThe episodes feel like a Librarian movie so I am sure you will enjoy it!
I'll check it out since I loved W13. I'm guessing when you say Librarians, that's not in the book kind of sense?
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty much Warehouse 13 accept the base of operation is in a library. No its not, the only similarity between an actual Librarian and "The Librarians" on the show is that they sometimes have to use books to figure out puzzles, and also that there home base is in a library.
ReplyDeletei'm so excited about this show! like so many others i kind of rolled my eyes when i heard about it thinking can they leave NOTHING alone!...i love the movies please leave them alone!...lol but it seems they're actually doing a good job...*fingers crossed*
ReplyDeletethe only thing i'm hesitant about is whether i can watch Christian Kane some anything other than a bad@%%...lol
I absolutely hate when good movie franchises get adapted into films, but The Librarians surprised me, and was much more enjoyable than I first had thought it would be.
