This finale was EPIC ! It really loved it ! One of the best episodes of this amazing season !
Missy makes an excellent Master and I really hope she isn't dead because I want to see her and the Doctor on Gallifrey ! The Cybermen were quite scary... but I loved the scenes with Danny and the Brigadier <3
I also hope it's not the end of Cara's adventures with the Doctor, she is such a great companion for Twelve !
Fab finale, really enjoyed that! Loved the nod to the Brig, prob my favourite companion ever :) The Cybermen were creepy as hell for once and Missy was batshit crazy without being annoying like Simm unfortunately became in End of Time. The last scene in the cafe was heart breaking, both trying their hardest not to show their pain to each other, both lying their very best...they haven't too much there then, lol.
I'm sure Missy isn't dead though, the effect was too similar to the one when she transported off the plane imo.
Bit of a mixed bag, the cyberman stuff was just naff (apart from Danny Cyberman which broke my heart) but I will say the ending was so bloody sad. Both Clara and the Doctor lying to one and other in order to let the other one move on with their lives.
A big salute to Danny, what he did at the end with the little boy had my bawling my eyes out.
Wonder who will be the next companion, assuming Clara is leaving which I kind of feel like this should be the end of it.
I've been convinced all week that there's been a secret scene cut from the preview copy I saw about Missy not really being dead, lol. Like, maybe she ensured that the Cybermen's guns would transport her instead of killing her, or something like that?
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if she did something like that ^^ I don't see Moffat bringing back such an iconic character only to kill her a few episodes later... I'm sure she'll be back !
I still don't think Jenna will leave, I think her bad news was possibly that she'd lost her job or something along those lines and wanted to travel permanently now until the Doctor misconstrued things. Hopefully things will sort themselves out in the Xmas special and they will be back on board together, I do love their chemistry, they make a great leading couple imo. Though there is this rumour that there will be an announcement on Monday about a new companion, so we'll have to wait and see...
They have made a big thing about how she's spent a lot of time going back and forth in his timeline for a while, so he could feasibly meet her out of order I guess. But yeah, I do think it would be better for her to have survived somehow, it's what the Master does after all ;)
I like Clara a lot but I wouldn't be against a new companion coming in if that happens, its always fun to see new people on the show. I hope if Jenna does leave then Clara gets a final moment in the Xmas special.
I voted awesome, but then realised there's a bit of a plot hole that hasn't been tied up. I'm assuming it's deliberate... but anyway, what about the great-grandson, of Danny and Clara's bloodline, who travelled to the end of the universe in Listen? Did that happen, has time been re-written?
I'm going to guess not as Moffat is a clever writer and can make a storyline span several series...
I think it would be a good idea to bring another male companion in, a proper one who would travel in the TARDIS this time though and I'd prefer him not to be a love interest for Clara either.
Time can be rewritten, that's a constant theme in the show, so I don't see that as a plot-hole at all. We don't even know for sure that Orson is their grandson any way, it's just assumed from the evidence we were given at the time. It could be he's related to another branch of the family, from another dimension, Clara meets Danny at another point in time in her future, etc.
It can also be that Clara might be pregnant with Danny's child and she found out after he died. It could also be that is what Clara wanted to tell the Doctor when they met up together 2 weeks after the cibermen/missy situation happened or the last time they were together.
I'm really hoping that isn't the case, I just don't feel that's important to the storyline really. I would also be disappointed in her if she were to call being pregnant "bad news".
I thought this episode was awesome. I was so glade that Kate Stewart survived after falling out of the airplane especially that the Brigadier was the one to save her and I was shocked and pleased that the Brigadier appeared in this episode. (Iv watched some episodes with the Brigadier in from the classic series on the horror channel and I really like/love his character especially the relationship/friendship he has with the Doctor and UNIT)
I'm hoping that the master is still alive and I liked last weeks twist of the master being a woman and who's playing him/her (I find I don't mind this change in gender of the master).
I loved many other things from the series 8 final such as the moment the doctor find out he was named president of earth.
One thing I don't get in this episode is how did UNIT/Kate recognise the Doctor (the doctor has a different appearance now after regenerating) and don't UNIT recognise the Doctor's face or get confused by the other person to look like the Doctor ''John Frobisher'' (From Torchwood: Children of Earth).
I can tell you that Jenna Coleman who plays Clara was confirmed to return in the Christmas episode but I don't know after that episode if she is going to do another series. I read this on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_serials
Heh... They probably figure that's hardly a spoiler. Since the Master's been dying and coming back and dying and coming back since the beginning, at this point there is NO "death" that could ever be believably permanent for this character!
That was so awesome but so emotionally unravelling.
Missy singing 'Hey Missy, your so fine' was so funny. Michelle Gomez was so great, she played it so well, from the subtle differences in her voice to her gestures, she was amazing. However the highlight for me was seeing her use her umbrella to come down to the graveyard just like Marry Poppins!
Danny wanting to escape the pains of his human side was very heartbreaking and when he sacrificed himself, I thought that was very honorable.
Danny giving his one chance to return to the boy he killed was very admirable but just made the scene even more emotional :(
That ending, I felt so sad, but then Santa showed up (Nick Frost!! I didn't expect him to be playing Santa, a pleasant surprise). Clara cannot leave, I really really enjoy her friendship with Twelve, that speech she gave to Cyberman Danny before she knew it was Danny was really nice. I think Clara lied to Twelve to spare his feelings but it was so sad to watch :(
One of the most heartbreaking Doctor Who finales I have ever watched. And I never hated the Master aka Missy more than I do now. I hope she is dead and stays that way but it being Doctor Who, the chances are usually slim.
I'm left with a lot of different thoughts about this episode, so I'm just going to bullet point it into the bad, the good, and the cliffhangers.
The bad. **Featuring Clara in the opening credits highlights the problem many fans have had with this character. The companions' role is the grounding force for the Doctor by showing the best of humanity in spite of our flaws. Clara, however, aspired to be a "Doctor" herself the more her life became intertwined with the Doctor's and time travel. **How did Kate and Osgood immediately know it was the Doctor? They've never seen his regenerated face before. **There was some serious glossing over the complexities of assimilating a human into a cyberman by having the rain "pollenate" the dead. **After questioning his role as the President, The Doctor said "I don't want Americans bombing around the place. They'll only start praying." For Moffat to write that line for the Doctor I think is condescendingly offensive. Know your audience Mr. Moffat. The good. **Clara pretending to be the Doctor was some really good, quick thinking that bought her the time she needed to stall the cybermen. **Missy killing Osgood was extremely harsh, yet a necessary defining moment for this character. Just to punctuate how sadistically cruel the woman is, Missy delighted in crushing Osgood's eyeglasses beneath her feet. Just like she relishes the thought of crushing humans in general. **Just like bowties, cybermen flying are cool. **The scenes when the airplane decompressed were amazing. **Danny and Clara's scenes in the cemetery were beautifully poignant. I really enjoyed Danny because of how he grounded Clara and made her more relatable through their love for each other. That's why it hurt to see Danny unable to hide his pained reaction beneath the cyberman armor when Clara went on about how how the Doctor was her best friend. Danny was never going to have all of Clara's heart as long as the Doctor is the closest person to her in the whole world. **In spite of Missy's mindgames, the Doctor chose his own destiny by seeing the best of humanity in the bond between Danny and Clara even after she activated his inhibitor. **Danny showed the Doctor once and for all what being a soldier really means ... commitment, bravery, and sacrifice when called upon. **The Doctor saluting the Brigadier after realizing he saved his daughter. **The Doctor's gutwrenching reaction when he realized Missy played him for a fool and Gallifrey was not outside of the Tardis' open doors.
The Cliffhanger. **I don't think the Doctor killed Missy. I think he transported Missy to the coordinates she gave him. **Danny saved the young boy he accidentally killed in Afghanistan by using the portal instead of saving himself. That act was completely in character for Danny. I don't think it's the last time the portal will come into play or else what is the point of Clara keeping the bracelet. **The Doctor and Clara will see each other again in the Christmas episode. Santa is on the job to help these two clear up their misunderstanding. By the way, perfect casting of Nick Frost as Santa. Now this is the part I really hate ... waiting for the Christmas episode and then who knows how long for the next season to start.
If Danny got to shut off his emotions, where was that option for the audience? I cried four times during this episode; my make-up looks like an Impressionist painting and my face is sore from being scrunched up for so long. Curse you, Moffat!
Except don't, because while this finale was heart-breaking, it was also fantastic. The Cybermen worked in this like they haven't a long time, partly because they weren't the focus of the episode. Gomez was an amazing Mistress, and I'd like her back sometime; Samuel Anderson also carried so much of the emotion of the episode (ironically) and did so splendidly. I didn't expect much from Danny Pink when he was first announced - I was less than thrilled that every companion of the Moffat era seemed to need a love interest, which makes me miss Donna a lot, and I felt like we were just getting a substitute Rory. Danny turned out to be so much more than I thought, and while the "love is a promise" end was a bit frustrating - it's always love, isn't it - the show earned it this time, by showing the progression of the Danny/Clara relationship; the promise Danny made to do anything for Clara when he found out about the Doctor and Clara's willingness to do anything to get Danny back were good prelude to Cyber!Danny determination to protect Clara at all costs.
I also loved Missy's motivations. The Time Lords used her and called her an abomination; the Doctor was the only person to ever stand by her no matter what she'd done. To want to bring him to her level and show that they aren't so different is a very understandable impulse. It's something the Master has shown before in small measures, but to see how much she wants not to be alone in her insanity and lust for power is reminiscent of the Doctor's desire to save her so he wouldn't be alone as the last of his kind. I think this version of the Master/Mistress would be a great one to revisit, so hopefully the Brigadier didn't kill her. Also - the Brigadier! A great moment for Classic Who fans.
I wonder what's going to happen to Clara and the Doctor going forward. The quiet way they left things, both heartsick and lying to each other about it, is very much in keeping with their relationship. I love Clara, and I don't want to see her go quite yet. She's been a great companion for Capaldi, and I want to see how losing Danny changes her. She literally saw a future with him with her possible future grandchild (great-grandchild? I don't know. Also, hanging plot thread there) and said he was her last love, and now he's gone. What would she do without the Doctor when she's lost the other most important person in her life? On the other hand, if losing Danny doesn't make her stop traveling with the Doctor for good, it's hard to see what will, and I don't want Clara to die, too.
And lastly, it was great to see the Doctor's questions about himself be resolved. He knows who he is now, after having a season of people, himself included, questioning who he is. He's an idiot in a box who does what he can where he can. That's how it should be.
A great finale for a fantastic season. This was the creative boost the show needed, and I can't wait until I see it again.
I liked that the if not the Cyberman at least The Master killed some people. Not saying killing is right, but when a Threat is world wide and no one is dying, is it really a Threat. But shit that sucked when Osgood died.
Was a bit annoyed at the CyberDanny and Doctor scene again, other then that good him, being able to save the world after always feeling guilty of being a solider after the loss of that kid he -choose- to save instead of him. - Btw if Danny is really dead, I'm guessing he had other relatives for Orson Pink to come about.
Coordinates being fake was expected. And I wonder if The Master didn't just use his own Netherspere to save herself in via download? Plus she is a Time Lord.
End was sad indeed, lying to each other. Lets hope This Santa is real...
A fantastic finale finale! Probably one of my favorites of the show I think. It was emotional, intense, and jaw dropping.
Goodbye, Danny Pink! :( The scene where Clara had to turn off his emotions and turn him into a full Cyberman so that the Doctor would know how to save the world was absolutely heartbreaking. That was such a painful scene to watch because Danny was one of my favorite characters this season. I'll miss him so much.
Michelle Gomez as The Master was hands down my favorite portrayal of the character. John Simm was pretty great (I will never forget the scene where he turns everyone into the Master race XD) but Michelle blew me away. I laughed so hard when she sang "Hey Missy, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Missy". Brilliant!
Clara and The Doctor both lying to each other and keeping some big secrets to themselves was gut wrenching. Clara thinks by just letting him know that Danny is with her so that he doesn't have to deal with more troubles and can just explore Gallifrey will make it better (but it won't because he actually never found his home planet :/). There's also the theory floating around that Missy actually did give The Doctor the correct coordinates but it's in reverse because he said that it was strange reading the 3W welcome scroll in reverse. It seems very possible so we'll see. Also, The Doctor looking out into space and realizing that he didn't find Gallifrey was so emotional. This was the first time that we have seen Twelve break away from his calm manner and just lose it and smash the TARDIS repeatedly.
I really don't want to lose Clara as a companion right now but if Jenna believes that it's her time to leave then so be it. I'll just miss her very much :/
Looking forward to the Christmas special! Having Santa Claus is going to be a lot of fun :)
The Paternoster Gang know who he is in Victorian times, and UNIT keep extensive file so they would know who he is from his adventures in their past. It's very possible that they already know what his future incarnations look like too due to the nature of time travel ;)
I loved that the Brig was a hero too, such a nice touch to know that he also never deleted his emotions either in the Nethersphere, that's so like him. The salute made me a tad emotional, like Clara he was also a great companion in his time.
Clara's eyes are so huge :o lol. Such a sad moment though, she and Twelve just can't be at the end of their travels yet though imo, Moffat has called him her Doctor and they have such incredible chemistry that she just has to do at least another half season...or else!! :p
I'm glad that Danny finally got some great material in the last two episodes after being almost a forgotten character for a third of the season, Anderson totally deserved it and played Danny's goodbye beautifully. Perhaps we will get Orson explained at some point, or maybe it will be over written, I'm hoping for the former of course as I would love to see him again, but I can live with either explanation really.
Missy was excellent, adored her performance! I still think that she teleported to the Nethersphere the same way she did from the plane, perhaps it was something built into the Cybermen's technology? Or maybe she had a bracelet on still? Or did the Doctor do something, there was a click and he held her device differently to how she held it when she obliterated people. Who knows, but I think she will be back before too long and will be part of the race to find Gallifrey at some point.
I completely agree, their friendship is so genuine. Yeah, it would be nice, Samuel Anderson tweeted about his finale episode though last night which made me wonder if it might be the end. Danny as the Cyberman was so evocative, I'm truly amazed at his performance, I salute you Danny Pink :)
Missy was fantastic, I'd really like to see her again despite her evilness. Missy on the plane was delightful, her playfulness is so much fun :)
I wish there was more episodes, I have come to love this season so much!
I think Anderson taken on some stage work? I'll have to keep an eye out as I would definitely like to go and see him perform :) It's hard to know what will happen next season at the moment isn't it, I really don't believe a word Moffat says these days since he lies so much, lol.
All I know is that Jenna doesn't seem to have any work lined up so far, unless she's managed to keep it very, very quiet. My gut tells me that she'll be back though, there's still a lot for the two characters to explore and Xmas isn't a great time for her to tie the ends up and leave, esp when there is another actress guest starring too.
I think he has got some things lined up. LOL, thats so true :D I have noticed that too *crosses fingers in the hopes she's staying", I also think shes staying but there are so many people saying shes not, I wonder where they even come up with these things, lol. Definitely, I'm really excited for the Christmas Special :)
As a descendant of British military personnell who served in the First and Second World Wars, I have gone from being disappointed by the portrayal of soldiers in new Doctor Who to offended. As if clearly implying the desecration of war graves was not bad enough, scheduling this episode so close to Remembrance Day, and during events to mark the centenary of the First World War, is in extremely poor taste. As a viewer since 1979, I am now considering quitting watching this show.
I was fine until the Brigadier showed up. That's when I teared up. For a character I was getting bored with Missy turned out to be quite a bit of fun despite the fact that she was the Master. (But then I'm in a minority....I'm not a fan of a return of characters and villains whose stories repeatedly end.) Upset that Danny had to die but what an exit. Then got to the final scenes. Tear jerkers. So Danny to fix the one thing he wished he could take back - instead of being selfish. Watched both parts back to back. Awesome.
But....Santa saying "Coo-wee" Never in my imagination. :-D
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
This finale was EPIC ! It really loved it ! One of the best episodes of this amazing season !

A great finale for a fantastic season. This was the creative boost the show needed, and I can't wait until I see it again.
Mainly awesome finale.
ReplyDeleteI liked that the if not the Cyberman at least The Master killed some people.
Whoufflealdi canon yayyyyyyyyy!!! Can't wait to see the next copanion. I'll miss Clara a lot.
ReplyDeleteMichelle Gomez as Missy was really the star of this episode. What a fantastic and entertaining performance. (And, yes, I'm sure she'll be back)
ReplyDeleteUnless it's the teacher at her school who looks exactly like Matt Smith's doctor. That would be hilarious.
ReplyDeleteA fantastic finale finale! Probably one of my favorites of the show I think. It was emotional, intense, and jaw dropping.
ReplyDeleteGoodbye, Danny Pink!
Lol, exactly!
ReplyDeleteThe Paternoster Gang know who he is in Victorian times, and UNIT keep extensive file so they would know who he is from his adventures in their past. It's very possible that they already know what his future incarnations look like too due to the nature of time travel ;)
ReplyDeleteI loved that the Brig was a hero too, such a nice touch to know that he also never deleted his emotions either in the Nethersphere, that's so like him.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that Danny finally got some great material in the last two episodes after being almost a forgotten character for a third of the season, Anderson totally deserved it and played Danny's goodbye beautifully.
ReplyDeleteMissy was fantastic, I'd really like to see her again despite her evilness.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is that Jenna doesn't seem to have any work lined up so far, unless she's managed to keep it very, very quiet. My gut tells me that she'll be back though, there's still a lot for the two characters to explore and Xmas isn't a great time for her to tie the ends up and leave, esp when there is another actress guest starring too.
I think he has got some things lined up. LOL, thats so true :D
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that too *crosses fingers in the hopes she's staying", I also think shes staying but there are so many people saying shes not, I wonder where they even come up with these things, lol. Definitely, I'm really excited for the Christmas Special :)
Yeah, I so not want her to go. ><
ReplyDeleteEvery time I saw people saying that she is leaving, it piss me off so bad. lol
Me too. I know right :)
ReplyDeleteAs a descendant of British military personnell who served in the First and Second World Wars, I have gone from being disappointed by the portrayal of soldiers in new Doctor Who to offended. As if clearly implying the desecration of war graves was not bad enough, scheduling this episode so close to Remembrance Day, and during events to mark the centenary of the First World War, is in extremely poor taste. As a viewer since 1979, I am now considering quitting watching this show.
ReplyDeletedid missy die???
ReplyDeletei dont think so
if she did then it was a shitty end to the finale.
Awesome.
ReplyDeleteBut....Santa saying "Coo-wee" Never in my imagination. :-D
