"It's an incredibly dark episode and very disturbing in many ways" were the words showrunner and Executive Producer Jason Rothenberg used to describe last night's episode of The 100, the tenth episode of the season.
He was right on the money with that statement. This episode, written by T.J. Brady & Rasheed Newson and beautifully directed by Omar Madha, had plenty of dark and disturbing moments while packing an immense amount of storytelling into just 43 minutes.
"I Am Become Death" was all about the 100 on the ground. Rather surprisingly, scenes on board the Ark were absent, an interesting move given the events of last week, however I'll give credit to the creative team here for leaving two significant questions pestering the minds of everyone in a way that doesn't seem to have annoyed viewers. More on those later.
The divide that was driven between the lead characters in the fallout of the attempted truce with the Grounders was nicely exploited in this episode and set a great backbone for events. Clarke, Finn and Bellamy were abrasive at times, with Jasper benefiting from his 15 seconds of fame to Monty's disgust, and Octavia working with Lincoln to ascertain what the Grounders would do in response.
Numerous theorists, including myself, predicted the return of Murphy in some way, shape or form, and this came to fruition in last night's episode. A fairly bashed up Murphy activated a tripwire outside the camp walls where he was promptly captured and brought inside the drop ship for further questioning. Clarke ascertained that he'd been deliberately let free, but it wasn't until the bodies started piling up that that became clear. I thought the idea of biological warfare was an excellent one, and one of the best ideas the creative team have come up with so far this season. The type of infection was, in Lincoln's words, a "softener," but I can't get my head around how Octavia and Finn didn't succumb at all. Aside from that, the staggered infection timetable was well thought out, and was used to shift leadership roles and other key responsibilities to other characters throughout the episode.
The status of several relationships between characters changed markedly in this episode. Unfortunately the 100 don't have Facebook's new 'Ask' feature for relationship updates, so they have to do things the old fashioned way. For starters, the moment I saw Finn rush to catch Clarke, I knew the relationship between Raven and Finn was all but over. Finn is now single, but with Clarke growing closer to Bellamy in this episode thanks to their closer and more coordinated leadership approach, Finn might be left out in the cold. That's a pity really, especially because Finn almost certainly saved the group with his bomb idea. He may eventually grow tired of the group and the trouble they cause him, so I'm watching the character pretty closely now.
Monty and Jasper's characters have been used chiefly as comic relief so far this season, though in last night's episode we saw them fall out in the wake of Jasper's fame only to reunite following Monty's lifesaving gun run. Siblings Bellamy and Octavia also grew closer despite the latter's trip outside the walls to meet Lincoln. Octavia quelled her brother's fears after he was struck down with the infection by saying "I won't let anything happen to you." Those words were ushered by Bellamy in a flashback in an earlier episode when he was holding baby Octavia moments after she was born. This, along with the reference to the late Charlotte, was really good continuity that I'm hoping we see more of in the last three episodes of the season.
The final relationship status update is between Octavia and Lincoln. I've never been sure what to make of the relationship between these two, but I've enjoyed watching it unfold. Lincoln, it appears, is now a marked man by his tribe, and opts to abandon them but not before extending an invitation to Octavia to join him. I was surprised when she declined, given how close the pair had become, and the impression I was getting that the character was being written as somewhat of a rebel for this very reason. One wonders now whether Lincoln does in fact abandon ship, or use the information he has to secure his wellbeing among his own people and seek some sort of revenge.
In what I thought was the darkest scene of the episode, Clarke stood in the makeshift graveyard containing the bodies of those who had perished. Bellamy stood at her side. "Fourteen graves" she said. Fourteen of the 100 are already dead. One wonders whether that includes the likes of Charlotte who jumped off the edge of a cliff into the abyss, or those who died while being pursued by Grounders in an earlier episode. This scene really hit home the fact that the 100 really are isolated, and it's likely to remain that way for some time. I wouldn't be surprised to see that graveyard double in size by the end of the season. Here's hoping it's not a main character who joins them.
I hinted at two big unanswered questions hanging over viewers' heads near the beginning of this piece, but I didn't address them directly. The first one is, obviously, the fate of Clarke's mom Abby. I am almost certain she's not dead. What hit the ground was clearly man-made and came from the Ark, but it was damaged almost beyond recognition. Add to that that we only saw a couple of burnt corpses out of the several dozen that should have been on board and you have enough evidence to suggest something isn't right. It looks as if my theory is correct, with Paige Turco slated to appear in the next 2 episodes thanks to press releases.
The second question is the fate of the Ark itself. In last week's episode, the damage caused by the launch of the second drop ship looked rather catastrophic, and this was reinforced by the inability to make radio contact with the Ark by Raven. The creative team are pretty fearless and like toying with the viewers (I'm a fan of both traits) but it seems a bit extreme to decimate an entire half of the series' plot this early on. Fortunately, next week's episode press release and promo indicates the return of Isiah Washington and Henry Ian Cusick as well as the aforementioned Paige Turco. Of course, the circumstances they're in won't be unveiled until next week, though the Ark is shown in a dire state in the promo.
Before I wrap this up, a quick word on realism. I was pleased that hydrazine was used as the name of the rocket fuel Raven used to blow the bridge, because hydrazine is, in fact, real life rocket fuel. However it is clear, not pink in color, but is highly toxic and, of course, dangerously unstable. Raven's use of her space suit when handling the stuff was wise, though I'm unsure how any of it managed to not blow up with an impact that strong with the ground. That's reinforced by the massive mushroom cloud that we saw after the bomb was detonated by Jasper. And do infections like what we saw tonight actually exist? In a post-apocalyptic world, I'm sure something would have mutated - I just hope it won't be the common cold. Finally, a shout-out to the set designers, make-up and special effects teams who did a really nice job in their respective roles in this episode.
On next week's must-watch episode, titled "The Calm", with a low food supply at camp, Clarke and Finn lead a group out to hunt for food and wind up in a compromising position. With Finn’s life in danger, Clarke makes a game-changing decision. Meanwhile, Raven makes Bellamy an offer he can’t refuse. On the Ark – Kane risks his life and is reunited with Chancellor Jaha

Jimmy.
i really liked the episode.! x3
ReplyDeleteeven if i'm not very happy that it looks like murphy can stay with the 100.
i have to say it didn't really took me by surprise that he killed the other, i mean he doesn't seam like the kind of guy who forgives easily... i'm sure he's going to cause trouble.
I'm still wondering if Murphy knew he was a carrier of the virus. He definitely wants revenge at this point.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Lincoln will secretly stick around. He's in love with Octavia. Maybe he'll show up again at some point.
I thought this ep was great for characterization. Everyone's character got furthered.
And it introduced a new possible enemy with the Mountain Men.
It was a beautifully written episode. I enjoyed it. Episodes 7-10 have been the best, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI'm LOVING the way the writers are developing Bellamy and Clarke's relationship in every episode. They keep growing closer and closer in a genuine way. There is so much trust and respect between them. This is how you should write pairings. Let them respect and trust each other FIRST...and then fall in love. At this point, they completely trust each other. I love that. Also, it is interesting that when Bellamy woke up, he immediately looked at Clarke's hammock, searching for her. It's a small moment, but the director emphasized his facial expression. And I think that was done for a reason. Also, even when he was upset with her due to Octavia, he still automatically protected her when another guy pointed a gun directly at her. He knocked that guy out right away. He keeps protecting her. And it's amazing to watch. Also, he definitely looked worried when he first saw her with Murphy: "Did he do something to you?" The actors are both quite brilliant. And their chemistry continues to amaze me.
I don't feel bad for Finn, to be honest. He was unfair to both ladies. So I can't sympathize with him at all.
I think Jasper and Raven would make a fun pairing. A Chemist/Mechanic pairing. I enjoyed their scenes last week. Jasper makes Raven a bit lighter/more fun for a change.
I also loved that Jasper got to be the hero. And I enjoyed the Octavia/Bellamy sibling moments a lot. Finally, there is more bonding for the siblings! And Octavia actually being nice to her brother for a change!
what kind of offer do you guys think raven makes bellamy.?
ReplyDeleteThat's the most intriguing part of the press release. It must be in exchange for something but I can't think what
ReplyDeleteClarke trusted Bellamy so much that she sent Octavia away secretly! But she was worried about Finn catching the virus.... I also wished Finn had been the one breaking up with Raven, but it seems his character is not written that way. Same as he prefers blowing up a bridge than shooting people, which at the end will do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteI love the sneaking little remarks between Bellamy and Finn, they are obviously very different but still work together. Bellamy did not believe that Finn's plan would work but he still let them try. The Arc's counsel also consists of more than one, I think that they trying build the same thing on the ground. The show is so well written, it amazes me very week.
In an interview she said that the best way to get over someone is to get somebody new! Bellamy had already girls in his tent, he might be interested. Plus Raven never backed down from him so far, that might be appealing to him... Raven and Bellamy are a better fit than Raven and Finn in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteAgree on the Bellamy/Clarke relationship development - it is very well crafted. There's enough there to keep you interested without being overwhelmed with chemistry or attraction etc etc. I do feel bad for Finn - he got the raw end of the stick through no fault of his own.
ReplyDeletei had feared something like that.
ReplyDeletei don't know why but the thought of them together kind of bothers me...
I just realized we only have three episodes left! I'm so glad we're getting a second season of this fantastic show!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great episode! I was actually waiting for the Ark scenes, but I guess we have to wait another week (they did this with the aftermath of the flares as well). Some nice character developments here, and Raven/Finn breakup has been coming since episode 4. Of course Murphy is still a bad guy, wonder what other revenge he will be getting (mentioned in the press release of episode 12). I'm glad Jasper and Monty reunited, and now I am wondering why they were actually locked up on the Ark because they don't exactly seem like rebels.
Maybe because Raven was "framed" for Miller's murder, she offers Bellamy something to get back on Murphy?
ReplyDeleteI thought Jasper and Monty got locked up for simply being Pot Heads basically. They were growing the Ark's weed.
ReplyDeleteThis episode was way better than last weeks, the flow was much better and it was way much easier to get into the story. Loved the "hidden" tension between Bellarke, the geekship between Monty and Jasper, and man is Marie killing it as Octavia.
ReplyDeleteAh, I must have missed that then.
ReplyDeleteI think it was pink because of all the blood mixed in.
ReplyDeleteI think it was the first ep, it's when they are walking to Mt. Weather, and Jasper and Monty made a few comments about growing the herbs on the Ark.
ReplyDeletei'm glad next week we'll get to see the ark! I was worried all the adults had been killed off
ReplyDeleteYou know what I'm starting to find really interesting on this show is how much of it has been lifted from real life history. I don't know if it's deliberate or not but I'm loving it. Obviously everything is updated to a post apocalyptic world where people can live in giant space ships, but still not a lot of what's happening is that far fetched.
ReplyDelete1 - The idea of "The 100" in the first place. Too many people on the Ark, is earth livable? How do we find out without risking any one worthwhile? Send the convicts. Remarkably similar to how the colonization of Australia by the British came about. Jails overcrowded, huge ships docked in estuaries full to the brim with convicts, many of them children, many of them convicted for petty crimes. They wanted to colonize Australia but didn't know if it was possible, in the end they decided to send a fleet of convicts to do the groundwork for them.
2 - "Biological Warfare" I'm sure you all know the stories of settlers in North America giving the natives blankets infected with smallpox to make them sick and wipe them out. In Australia and other places colonizers brought germs with them that were harmless to them but to the people who'd never been exposed to them it killed them. Which brings me to another point I shall return to *
Actually, I'll return to it now.... it was a bit weird that anyone was immune to this disease. If it's developed on earth since the war then nobody in Space would have had immunity to it, it's not possible. If it's something that was around before the war it's kind of possible that some people would be genetically immune to it, I guess.... not sure we should question the science on this one too much.
Using Murphy as a weapon was extremely clever. Clarke was giving it socks last week about how their weapons were superior and they'd wipe the Grounders out if it came to it. For the Grounders to respond like that was 1 - very clever and 2 - suggest this is indeed not the first war they've fought.
Thank God Raven finally stood up to Finn. Still think it's a bit of overkill to have Finn "love" Clarke but it's obvious he feels more of a responsibility to Raven than actual love so she's better off. Glad she was the one to end it too although all these things are making Finn look like kind of a coward. On paper I like Finn, he's very much trying to do the right thing and keep everyone happy and safe but in reality he needs to be a bit more flexible. He's an idealist but needs to be more of a realist. His idea to build the bomb was pretty clever though.
I think Finn would be more liked if the character could exhibit the vulnerability that Bellamy does. That vulnerability makes it possible to root for even unpleasant characters, which Bellamy certainly was at the start of the season and I am sure will be occasionally again.
ReplyDeleteGreat Ep !
ReplyDelete* Never trust(ed) Murphy (I was one of those who predicted his viral betrayal)... I kept waiting for the "other shoe to drop" & bam right there at the end he shows his true colors all over again!
* Lincoln's interesting comment about the Other Tribes- just how many are there? Mountain Men?
* Octavia Not going with Lincoln- will he stay go or maybe become a 100? Very Romeo and Juliet scenario.
* Bellamy's just as protective of Clarke as he is Octavia.
* Raven giving Finn his walking papers.
* Monty & Jasper's bromance friction !
*
I hate the idea of her getting with someone 5 minutes after she and Finn break up. She doesn't need a man. She should stay single and get over her heartbreak. The writers will probably pair her up with someone immediatly though.
ReplyDeleteIf they ever pair Raven with anyone I would love to see her with Jasper. They've had really sweet moments and Jasper got his heart broken just like her.
I also think Bellamy and Clarke are a better fit than Clarke and Finn.
I understand where Finn was coming from. He loves Raven like a sister and was finding it hard to break up with her because he didn't want to hurt her. He's all she has and he didn't want to break her heart. He didn't mean to fall in love with Clarke, it just happened and he can't make those feelings stop.
ReplyDeleteI like Finn but I think people aren't getting attached to him because he's so underdeveloped compared to everyone else. We don't really know his backstory.
Another amazing episode, these guys rock!
ReplyDeleteI like how real the interactions feel, from Bellamy and Clarke considering a plan B in case Finn and Jasper are unable to make the shot, and how they have been bonding over the responsabilities over their shoulders. It feels so organic and I truly love it (not shipping them, but their relationship just feel so real!). It's also great that they keep the continuity there.
I also don't think Abby is dead, but wouldn't it be bold if she was?! Anyway, probably won't happen any time soon xD
I like Finn and Clarke together, but Bellamy and Clarke might be endgame but hopefully not before season 3. I prefer Bellamy and Clarke as opposites, it is better for an interesting story line in my opinion. What I liked about this episode most was that they are growing together as a team.
ReplyDeleteI hope Raven will survive this season because otherwise we are back to the triangle. The new girl Harper might be introduced for Jasper but I would like Monty to have more screen time!
OMG this show is just insane, I can't believe it's on the CW
ReplyDeleteI knew I couldn't trust Murphy and I liked how they kept the suspense about the Ark. And I'm not a shipper but I'm enjoying Clarke and Bellamy's interactions. Much better than the Clarke/Finn/Raven thing. I want Finn to die ASAP.
Really good insight with the parallels to real life historical events. I'd noticed some correlation but not to the extent you have. It goes without saying that bridges are also regular features of territorial advantage in wars so the bridge bomb also reflected this real life tactic
ReplyDeleteAnd 97 years is a hell of a long time. The Grounders seem to have had a lot of practice. It always amazes me to think that WW2 was only 70 odd years ago
I think the problem with Finn, for me anyway, is that he hasn't changed since they got there. It's all well and good having principals and ideals but it's a fine line between that and being an annoying preachy know it all. I think Clarke came across that way at the start too, probably why they got on so well, but she's been through so much in such a short time that she's cracked a little bit. It doesn't necessarily make her a better person now she's willing to kill or start a war but it does make her more interesting as a character and the flaws make her more human, easier to relate to, more likable. Finn still seems almost like a Mary Sue type. He's there solely to voice the other side of the argument, which is fine, and needs to be voiced, but that's all he seems to be doing.
ReplyDeleteNot following why a little girl would be a part of the assault team and get injured near the bridge. Writer's block? Good episode for characters but Bellamy came across too shrill. Raven finally used her head so that was nice. Finn is out of reach so I have no idea what they're going to do with him now. They beefed up the Jasper character a bit. Hopefully Monty is next. Engineering, chemistry, and jack of all trades need to start improving the camp.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to be as neutral as possible when it came to characters and ships but lately Finn is annoying me so much. I wouldn't mind if he gets killed off. Raven's character improved 100% everytime she had a scene with someone who wasn't Finn so their break up is going to benefit her character a lot.
ReplyDeleteI think you put into words I can't like Finn. In the beginning he was interesting and despite the fact Bellamy is my favorite I loved that Finn stood up to him. But now his character comes off as annoying and preachy because everyone else has evolved (even Octavia) and they have realized surviving isn't going to be easy or peaceful.
ReplyDeletePlease no. Also it would make Raven look really stupid. I hope the offer Bellamy can't refuse isn't sex. Also he can get all the sex he wants so it would be stupid. I would prefer Raven/Jasper for next season.
ReplyDeleteAlso no Clarke/Finn they are so boring and cliche.
while jet fuel isn't 100% alcohol, think of disinfectants that would get rid of blood, not absorb it. More like a nice post modern twist. It wouldn't be unusual to colour something in order to make a volatile substance easy to see. Dark-pink looks more dangerous
ReplyDeleteI want to see more platonic friendships or even meaningless hook-ups but no romance please. The writers are squandering their potential with lame romantic cliches.
ReplyDeleteAbout Finn, I never liked him, but now he is really getting on my nerves. He makes Raven such a sad, poor character and lately he's done nothing but getting killed/kidnapped/sick whatever. He's a damsel in distress and that needs to stop.
what's with another black dude being written off? (Connor?) Was he wearing a red shirt? Might be nothing but how he goes doesn't follow the plot. If you think about it since it's a fast acting infection why would Connor still be down while Raven was sick? He was brought in earlier so should have recovered already. But it was important that he still be sick so they could write him off and make Murphy evil. Not cool writers, find another way. At the very least they should follow their own story
ReplyDeleteThat the way I feel about Bellamy/Clarke, I like bad Bellamy and Clarke on the opposite side. Bellamy is boring when he is weak. And to me Raven and Jasper would be awful, no chemistry whatsoever. Raven needs somebody who can keep up with her. I like Monty, who is way more grown up than Jasper. Maybe somebody new will be introduced in Season 2, like Harper last week.
ReplyDeleteI know it's a fictional show and it may all be by accident but the idea that x amount of years in the future, after we've destroyed the planet, we're just on a loop of repeating history is quite scary. In real life building A Bombs did horrible things after WW2, in this fictional world they destroyed the planet and nearly destroyed humanity and yet in the space of a few days the kids have gone from sticks to guns to building huge bombs. The fact that it was Finn's idea too is apt. He sees himself as a peace maker, and yet his idea to keep the peace may well lead to more death and destruction than before. Just like the guys who built the first A Bomb.
ReplyDeletelove the show and really wanted to say that Jimmy's reviews are the best, I think you should stick to writing them from now on :)
ReplyDeleteMountain men - Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center. There's a drawing in Lincoln's book that reassembles a soldier in hazmat suit/gas mask, maybe they're descendants of the original staff and soldiers who survived in bunkers with prewar technology.
ReplyDeletebreak out the secret handshakes!
ReplyDeleteI like Finn/Clarke better, but I wouldn't mind Bellarke as long as they don't start pulling in the same direction all of the time. Half of the fun with them is the fact that they're different kinds of leaders, and I fear that one of them will be dumb down if they are to be together. ..
ReplyDeleteI figured as much. It's just interesting the way he phrased his comment:
ReplyDelete......You don't understand, the OTHER tribes. The Mountain Men......
Seems that there are MANY tribes.
Keep Monty- I like his snarky-tude
ReplyDeleteYup, I think you're right. Anya first time on the bridge said that many tried to conquer them.
ReplyDelete
