Ending the season this way was a risk and it looks like they knew it. Hopefully there is a good reason. If they're setting up a new multi-season arc this might be the best way to establish it.
I'm interested in seeing where this goes though. Is the car empty and they think he is a hostage somewhere or is someone faking his death? If it's the latter does that mean S7 will start sometime after his funeral?
Worst episode of Castle, probably, ever. Not even because they didn't get married, but because of all the overused, lack of depth, poorly written tv story lines- character already married, dress disaster- saved by mother's wedding, venue disaster, sentimental jewelry gift... and really?! are they going to really kill of the title character?
The non wedding is a huge Mistake, a cliffhanger ok but not In that way when you know it's the Most important thing the fans are waiting for... I'm a mess right now and i'm disapointed because a new season about: there will be a wedding?
I think Marlowe is asking the most of the fans that he's asked, ever. This is pretty dangerous really, especially this far on in the series. In all 3 interviews he speaks of exciting stuff and the like, which is all very well and good, but it leaves a pretty sour taste in my mouth nonetheless
I think we will have a full-fledged wedding, it's just a matter of time.
After the risk they took with last night episode, and the fan's reaction, I'm pretty sure they know they can't disappoint us again, not with the caskett wedding. I really like the ending even if it was pure torture to see beckett crying and I was sure that we would have had a wedding. These characters are meant to be, we will have a wedding soon (well except for the 4 months hiatus part). But I really want to see how they will find him, beckett's reaction and who's behind this (even if the clear option seems to be 3xK but doubt it with AWM interview).
We will have the perfect Caskett wedding and with this obstacle, I think their relationship will be strronger than ever! Have faith even it's little too soon after the episode for that :)
Will someone please explain to me where all the anger is coming from? From the polls, about a third of the fans are outraged and furious and so on, and I'm honestly just not getting it. What I just saw was a very fun, very sweet episode with some bits of suspense and a lot of laughs, followed by a twist ending that sets up some great drama for next season. The interview was nice too, though it has no real surprises in it. But many reactions read as if the commenters' own weddings had been spoiled, or as if they believe Richard Castle is actually dead. Since he isn't, and since they weren't, can someone please help me understand?
But look at the potential wedding we would have had in last night episode. Gorgeous place in the Hamptons, stunning dress, it was perfect and everything was a last minute arrangement.
So it seems that they don't need to get through months of planning to have the perfect wedding.
My guess is that they will be married by the 5 first episode the next season, it depends on how much time castle's disappearance will last.
Aren't you just a little bit curious about what happened to Castle? Because I can't wait for it. Just imagine how Beckett will do anything to find him (she probably thinks he's dead but I think they will quickly learn that the car was empty) and their reunion! This will be amazing and like I said they will be stronger than ever!
I think a lot of fans had their heart set on a wedding (including mine, but the cynic in me stopped me from becoming too deeply invested). It's the longest period of time in the show's history that they've had something definite to look forward to, which also happens to be relationship based, but it didn't turn out the way that they hoped. It'll burn off soon but people have a lot to vent about at the moment, that's for sure
"We know that people are looking for that [wedding] moment, and that's a moment that we're going to get to"
Sounds to me like Marlowe is very much aware that fans will want the satisfaction of the big celebration that's been postponed, and as Soso says, they've already established that these two can pull a wedding together at lightning speed. Who knows? Once Castle's been brought safely home from.... somewhere, maybe they'll find his 'return from the dead' even more reason for a huge and joyful celebration.
That twist ending was so unnecessary. And can't they have given the fans the wedding and make the abduction happen on the way to the honey moon. Car crashes, Beckett wakes up and Castle is not there, I would have been more satisfied by that.
My anger is with the overall finale, not the ending. I actually quite liked the ending. And that the marriage didn't go through is not a suprise. Marlowe has been dragging storylines out for years.
My problem was the the first part of the episode. Sorry but the Beckett being married before thing was in my opinion a crap storyline. It seems as a copy of an episode of the Big Bang Theory this season. Then we had Beckett doubting Castle if he was serious about her because he was already married twice. Pretty hypocritical now. And wanting her to have flaws oke, but he could not come up with something original.
Also it makes Beckett looks like a dumb bimbo. Sorry, but seriously a prew law student at Stanford who think a drive thru marriage is fake is just plain stupid.
And last it seems Marlowe thinks we are all stupid idiots. Can Marlowe explain to me how in those 15 years it was never discovered that she was married. So when you get hired by the FBI they are not going to do a check on your private life and ask you questions about your marriage to a criminal.
OMG. What a great episode. From the beginning to end. That ending was great I didn't really care that they didn't get married. I trust Andrew Marlowe. I am sure they will get the happy ending they want. And that is something that I am looking forward to in season 7. I have really enjoyed this season. I think it's been that best season yet. I am really looking forward to season 7. And looking forward to seeing how the ending plays out in the beginning of season 7.
I wondered when he would start the damage control. :(
two notes to the articles and I'm out of the Castle topics for good:
- New mythology Considering what happened with the old one, how the JB story turned into a heap of badly written, overused plot which the large part of the audience only wanted to be ended, thank you very much, I'm not interested in another hackfest.
- Beckett needed to be ruined because she always had the moral upper hand. So first he made from two, not perfect but equal persons a bumbling idiot and a Miss Perfection, then the way to cope with it is to start to ruin the other character as well? I shouldn't be surprised, because Marlowe's level of characterization is about as deep as a tea spoon (Castle was an a**hole in S4 because "the boys are like this", Alexis became a bitch, because "she is a teenager", etc.), but it's gross.
To be clear, I'm not talking about the "one and done" - she was young, reckless, didn't remember, OK. Not the plot in the episode, but her view of life could have changed after that, I except. But her being a law student and saying she didn't thought it real? Plus why does she have a moral upper hand? Except that the writers had never let them talk about Castle's divorces, which is one of the most unnatural situation between two adults who are at the step of a marriage. So Marlowe made a forced and annyoing plot and then he thinks that an even more annyoing one is the way to remedy it. Again, thank you, I'm fed up with it.
The first three seasons will almost a favourite to me. I quit now until the letdowns don't taint my enjoyment even in the older episodes.
I honestly have no idea why ppl are angry over this. Knew from the start it wasn't going to happen. It's a fucking TV show. What do you expect? It's not a series finale, it's a SEASON FINALE WITH ANOTHER SEASON COMING UP. The ep needs drama to go into the next season. The past 5 seasons of the show didn't show you that? This whole season reeks of "The wedding isn't going to happen folks".
I'm more angry about the whole "Oh i forgot I got married" story. WTF Marlowe?! Why is nobody asking him about that?
I really hope they don't start a new mythology but concentrate on the 3XK. It's my favourite story on the show and I do hope he has something to do with the crash. And please please PLEASE don't do a cop out and have Castle walked away from the crash unscathed. I want the drama damn it!
I tweeted before to Andrew Marlowe that somehow 3XK will kill Castle at his wedding, & guess what! He did. I think I find myself a bit creepy now. Haha!
Exactly!! my thought's first the gorgeous wedding went to Alex and Izzie and we got a stupid Post-It wedding and finally a 2min wedding 2 seasons later in a court house mark my words this will happen with Caskett wedding too...
Couldn't agree more Marlowe is playing with us his fans this finale was the worse I ever seen we were looking forward to a beautiful wedding they build it up the whole season FOR WHAT!!!! This is how Marlowe thanks us that we have sticked with him for 6 years!!!
Liked the episode, Liked the cliffhanger and im excited for next season i wasnt a supporter of a big white wedding and a happy end in the finale anyway so atleast i have something too look forward too next season.
No one believes Castle is dead. No one believes they won't get married sometime next season. That's why the non cliffhanger felt unnecessary. Cliffhangers should be used to create suspense....this felt tame.
Been off the Castle bandwagon for this season. Not necessarily the show's fault, I've just been busy with other things so I watch less TV these days.
I did begin to notice some things in S5 that were troubling. It seems like it's getting clumsy in handling big changes. Perhaps some of the characters have become caricatures of themselves: a little over the top for my liking.
The STV Podcast touched on "Shipping" and its impact on shows. Now that I understand the term a little better, it seems to me like the anger toward this year's finale has to do with that element. Fans are invested in the relationship and they want to see it progress. There's a lot of angst when it doesn't. I wasn't exactly surprised by the events of the finale, specifically the end, but I can understand the dissatisfaction.
The thing about on-screen relationships between main characters is that they tend to derail a show. House/Cuddy Jack Bauer/Renee, Boothe/Brennan, Castle/Beckett. The relationship becomes a distraction and gets shoehorned into the story somehow. Or an element that makes the show interesting is nullified. Not saying it can't be done, but it has to be handled carefully. I thought House handled it pretty well and 24's out was Jack's line of work. I suppose the common thread in why the relationship would ultimately fail lies in the character.
I've seen people saying both: that it was too much when they expected something light, or that it was too little when they want more fear for the characters.
To me, though, this is the best kind of cliff hanger: we know for sure that Castle isn't dead, but we don't know where he is, what is happening to him, who has done this, how Beckett and his family and friends will react, what the repercussions will be... All the suspense is about the story itself. To me, this is much more interesting than "is Character X dead?," and opens the door for much more interesting speculation.
I agree with you about the FBI thing: that does seem like an oversight by the writers.
The rest though honestly didn't bother me at all. Perhaps it's because I teach undergrads and on a regular basis see otherwise brilliant people doing extremely stupid things, but the idea of Wild Child Beckett doing something this absurd didn't phase me. Actually, a very brilliant colleague of mine did something very similar at just about that age. It also fits that Beckett didn't think about the matter again for 15 years, since it would have happened shortly before her mother's death, after which everything else ceased to matter.
To me, this in no way counts against her "one and done." She never, even then, saw this "marriage" as anything but a silly stunt. She couldn't bear to call the guy her "husband" in this episode because in her mind he never was. Unlike Castle's two marriages, this never involved even a semblance of love or commitment. No matter what a few documents say, the fact remains that Beckett has truly given her heart away only once. That hasn't changed.
That would have worked as well, for sure. I think I'd have liked that ending, too. From Marlowe's comments, though, it sounds like they had some very specific story-related reason to save the actual wedding for later. I'll reserve judgement on whether this was necessary or not until after we learn what that reason is.
Thanks, Jimmy. That does make a lot of sense, and honestly, I suppose it's a good thing: it means fans are sufficiently invested in this relationship to be riding the emotional roller coaster right alongside Beckett, as the fates (read: writers) conspire against her!
I really enjoyed this episode. I really enjoyed the interaction between all the different characters and I thought it was great that we got to see a softer side of Kate. Yes some of the storyline was unnecessary, but if a burst pipe was what it took to get rid of the other wedding dress then so be it. Also means Kate will need somewhere to stay other than her own apartment again. I must admit I am struggling to understand the outrage which is floating around cyberspace since last nights episode. Ok so we didn't get the wedding everyone had decided had to happen by the end of the season, but on a positive note, there is another season, we now have lots to speculate on over the summer, Rick is the one in danger this time after all Kate has had a pretty traumatic season, and we still have a wedding to happen. I can sympathise with many who are feeling let down, last years final episodes made me feel really let down, so much so that I didn't watch Castle all summer and it sorted itself out in September.
Actually the car wasn't empty there was a body in it and pretty sure someone else's body lol
Beckett will realize its not Castle and everyone will tell her due to the loss of Castle that she needs to let go and come to terms that how its gonna be ppl lol
I thought the episode was overall quite fun and the twist was interesting and unexpected. Not a great twist though because we know Castle is going to be okay... it was a non-cliffhanger in terms of is he alive or dead but interesting in terms of who was it in that car and what exactly happened. I didn't really have any problems with the finale so much so that I had to go online to realize that people might have problems with how it ended.
But, as I understand it, a lot of people watch this show for the relationships and of course, the central relationship of this show being Castle and Kate, and with all of the built up this wedding had since last season finale, I guess there was a certain (arguably) justifiable expectation that the fans had that perhaps wasn't delivered.
The show's writers should tell what they feel is the best story but I guess they should have known this would be the reaction this episode would get and from the interviews it seems like they anticipated the backlash and they'll take it, and it seems, to me at least, that he is confident they will win those fans back next season.
But hopefully, next time around, there won't be too much hype and build up before the wedding. It would feel repetitive.
Yeah, I never thought of that. Yes, definitely. At some point she has to have been asked about her 15 year marriage to a criminal. Also, it seems unrealistic that someone like Beckett who is a Detective and whose father is a lawyer wouldn't know the implications of getting married in Vegas. Maybe not when it happened, but at least a few months, or years later, or at least like you said when her background check is done before hiring her to the FBI. It's not possible that this *never* came up in the last 15 years. Even her criminal husband was aware of it and was actually using it as an excuse to avoid commitment. She should be better than him at least.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
You suck, Andrew Marlowe.
ReplyDeleteAnd from his comment about their wedding, I am guessing they are going to have a quicky wedding then or elope, which I kinda hate.
