The Originals - Review of Episode 1.16 - Farewell To Storyville

I have a feeling this review will be shorter than usual. I’m still not quite sure how I feel about it. Although not a lot of action this week, there was no shortage of emotion. From both the characters and the audience. By now most people have heard the news that Claire isn’t returning, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s disappointed by this. “Farewell To Storyville” brought us the final confrontation between the three Original siblings, particularly Klaus and Rebekah. After admitting he didn’t want to kill her, he let her go and she left town. Elsewhere in the French Quarter Cami and Marcel try to help Davina, ultimately giving her back to the witches. Elijah exiles Marcel.
Favorite character: Rebekah, duh! Did you really expect anything else. Rebekah has been my favorite Original from day one. Her entire existence she’s been trying to find happiness only for it to be taken away every time. Out of the entire episode, the ending was my favorite scene with her. She realizes she’s free and can finally live her life without any threats looming over her. If this is the last we see of her, that would be fine with me. Not that I won’t miss her (of course I will) but I’d rather she’s happy off screen than miserable on. Maybe she can make a little detour to Mystic Falls and pick Matt up along the way. Just a suggestion.

Favorite relationship: The one that has always interested me the most is the one between Klaus and Rebekah. As if seeing the two at odds wasn’t painful enough, the flashbacks of their younger selves broke my heart in two. I've re-watched the storm flashback several times now, and tears spring to my eyes every time. Their relationship has never been easy. As we could see when they were still on “The Vampire Diaries”. They’ve both done things to hurt each other: Klaus killing the men Rebekah had feelings for, Rebekah luring Mikael into town. This week’s episode was all about vocalizing all of the unspoken feelings between the two. Rebekah reluctantly agrees that she may have wanted him dead. Klaus hears from Elijah how Rebekah tried to protect them from their father, almost killing him once. Once Klaus stabs her, missing her heart on purpose, the fight seems to die down. They realize their relationship is too broken, they are too broken to be fixed. I believe this also might be the last ‘Always and forever’ we’ll hear on this show.
Favorite flashback: There were a lot of good ones this week. But the one the one that stuck with me the most (besides the storm one) was the brief shot of all 5 siblings playing together. No drama, no heartbreak, no problem. Just 5 kids who loved each other.

Best goodbye: I’m tempted to go with the one between Elijah and Rebekah. I’m going to miss their dynamic and I wish we could have seen more of it. But I know someday they’ll see each other again, they live forever after all, and it’s a small world. However the same can’t be said for Hayley. She’ll probably never see her friend again. I hate how their relationship kind of ended up getting ignored in the second half of the season. With both of them being on the verge of tears, by the time Rebekah asked Hayley to tell her daughter stories about her, I was already sobbing.
Best quotes
Klaus: “How do you plead?” Rebekah: “I plead you to shut up and listen.”

Rebekah: “What has happened to you. I remember the sweet boy who made me smile and gave me gifts. Who loved art and music. I wanted to be just like you. How could you have fallen so far.

Rebekah: “I was the one who brought him to New Orleans because of your wickedness. I wanted love and happiness, and you denied me the freedom to have either. Yes, I hated and I was afraid of our father, but he was a lesser evil than you, My bastard brother who loomed over me, threatening me as you are now. I wanted rid of you, and given the choice, I'd do it again.”

Rebekah: “He ruined me, too. That's what you forget. Centuries later, each of us is broken-- You with your anger and paranoia, me with my fear of abandonment and poor Elijah he dedicates himself to everyone but himself. We are the strongest creatures in the world, and yet we are damaged beyond repair. We live without hope, but we will never die. We are the definition of "Cursed" Always and forever.”

So I don’t know what will happen to the show with Rebekah gone. Only 2 Originals left, not exactly what I was expecting from a show called “The Originals”. Could you imagine what this show would have been like with all 5 siblings still alive and on screen, a girl can dream right? What did you think of this week’s episode? Sound off in the comments.

  1. Rebekah is not only my favorite character from The Originals, but she is my favorite character off all the shows im watching, so i will definitely miss her :(

But i have to admit that this episode was perfect way to say goodbye to her, but im still hoping they will announce her returning as main character in Season 1 :)

From now on, im curious to see which female character will get most screen time, im hoping for hayley , but i want to see more action from her, not only love scenes with elijah. i would be fine with Davina too, but i definitely dont want for Cami to get more screen time.

Also i would love to see Genevieve to stay a little longer, i would even love to see her as regular for Season 2

  2. "We are the definition of "Cursed" Always and forever.” That line killed me.

i'm upset about the fact she is leavin she was by far my favorite Original since TVD, but as well in TVD she always had wanted a family and live happy, she was willing to take the "Cure" to become a human again and go wherever she wanted but again she still wanted to be with her brothers cause they are her family and The Originals since the beggining it has been all they have talked about (being a family) and ruled New Orleans together, yeah that was just BS now?. It was bittersweet cause she got her freedom but not in the right way.
Now i hope by season two the showrunners see the mistake they made and ask her to go back cause The Original without Rebekah teasing Klaus is not The Originals.

  3. I think they really screwed up with the spin-off. I know that what I wanted (and I think a lot of other people) was for the show to focus on The Original Family and include all the Originals (the last time we saw them all was back in Season 3 of TVD - they should have saved the family stuff for the spin-off instead of playing it out back on TVD). Killing off Originals never made any sense to me to begin with so it was bad enough we only had 3 left when the spin-off began and we're already down to two. I would have rather they left Kol & Finn alive so there would have been an opportunity for them to pop-up at some point if the actors were willing to come back.

Character-wise I do think it made sense that Rebekah left (although I'm guessing Claire Holt just didn't want to do the show anymore). At first I was just so surprised she was leaving (and really sad) but at this point I am kind of happy that she did get a good send-off and she didn't stick around to be destroyed and killed off like Katherine.

  4. Joseph Morgan may play the most evil Original, Klaus, but nobody shows emotional pain like he does. I loved the speech that Rebekah gave about them all being broken. Beautifully written and wonderfully delivered with her lovely accent. I shall miss her greatly. And Elijah does BAMF better than them all...........maybe cause he's in a suit (and I'm very partial to Men in Suits .....John Reese).

This was my favorite line of hers through the entire episode. And i wish they could've developed her relationship with Hayley more. Their scene together was really sweet.

  6. Rebekah made a beautiful speech and this episode made for a sweet goodbye. But, I am upset that she is leaving. It was picked up for a full season and has now been renewed for a second season. They didn't get their 3 original vampire actors to sign a contract?!!? Come on people!!! They kept her leaving pretty well under wraps. I was totally blindsided by her departure. Where does it go from here? Do we have to focus on Hayley? Knowing her and the massacre from TVD, it's going to take a little time for me to warm up to her.
