Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Obviously.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Buffy because Spike was the best developed character for me and my first vampire love. He was the only reason I watched seasons 4-7.
ReplyDeleteBuffy and Angel. I can't separate both shows, especially not when the development of characters such as Cordy and Wesley happened in both of them.

ReplyDeleteFirefly is Whedon's best show but it loses this one because it had only 14 episodes.
Dollhouse and Firefly didn't really have enough time for long term character arcs though they did their best. I was going to pick Buffy but then I remembered just how much I loved Cordy and Wesley's character development in Angel, how they were in Buffy and what they became in Angel was really great writing and acting.
ReplyDeleteI liked all the shows (except for Firefly which is still on my watchlist) but given that Dollhouse had so little time I think the writting job was really good, you really got know the characters' layers and realtionships with each other.
ReplyDeleteBuffy. Because let's face if, Willow was one the best written and developed characters of our generation. From witchcraft to discovering her sexuality to her then becoming an addict and then working for redemption, her progression throughout the series was beautifully organic and well written.

ReplyDeleteGotta go with Buffy, even though Dollhouse is my favorite. I feel that Topher/Adele/Victor/Sierra all developed wonderfully throughout it's short run.

ReplyDeleteI'm inclined to go with both Buffy and Angel, both shows share the same characters and therefore have the same ammount of valuable character evolution.
ReplyDeleteBut having to decide between one of these two I think I'll have to judge by each shows individual characters that never crossed over: Buffy had Riley who did have a fair share of character evolution but it felt rushed towards the end and had Riley go in circles. Anya is a better example for character evolution and is quite frankly a prime example for proper evolution. BUT Angel had Lindsey, Lilah, Gunn, Doyle (who only had 13 episodes but went from a coward to a hero) and even that werewolf chic Angel dated for a few episodes (in one episode she grew like some characters didn't in 5 years).
So I'll have to go with Angel.
That being said: Wesley had the best written character evolution I've EVER seen on television. But he's both a Buffy and Angel character so I can't really base my vote on him.
Firefly had some well written evolution, Mal did go from a distanced douche to a caring yet a bit distanced captain, Simon went from 'upper class' douchy to a very likable and relatable character and Jayne did have his heartwarming evolution as well.
I wasn't a huge Dollhouse fan but from what I remember the relationships were rebooted almost every episode.
While I liked Buffy, I felt that Angel had the better character development.

ReplyDeleteAs the creator of the poll, I picked Angel. Neither Firefly nor Dollhouse lasted long enough to properly compare to the development of Whedon's longer-running shows.
ReplyDeleteBuffy, while having better character development than those two shows, dropped the ball long before the show ended. Characters stuck around without a purpose like Xander and Spike, Willow went through some stuff but never actually changed, Buffy became intolerably arrogant, Giles was written terribly in season 7, RIley.... existed, etc. Sometimes I felt the show was more interested in being a metaphor for adolescence than actually developing their characters.
Angel was all about character development. Cordelia went from a spoiled little girl to a strong, selfless, young woman. You could see her journey play out on screen and the steps it took to get her there. Angel went from a brooding anti-social loner to someone with a lot of friends and was comfortable being around people and able to smile and enjoy life with his friends. (I can't remember Angel ever smiling much in Buffy.) Wesley by far had the best character development. We saw him develop from a young, clumsy inept, arrogant watcher into a badass rogue demon hunter. When things happed to him or he committed certain acts he changed. When it was all said and done he revert back to his previous self the way Willow did (look at the scene in Angel where Wes and Willow chat, Wes is dark and messed up while Willow was the same as she was before murdering Warren and trying to end the world.)
Even recurring characters had better development that BTVS, imo. Lindsey McDonald and Lilah Morgan were just as fleshed out as any of the Angel cast. Faith had all of her meaningful development on Angel. Darla and Drusilla too. And Spike was able to be more than just a love interest and comic relief. He actually grew as a person!
Spike existed solely for comic relief in season 4, it was painful to watch. He had some good development in season 5 but that was all chucked away in 6 and 7.

Have to go with Buffy (Angel falls under here due to the character origins) - best examples for me were Wesley, and from where Cordelia started to where she ended
ReplyDeleteBuffy obviously because this show got enough time to write and develop each character from the gang. Each one of them evolved and grew up a lot during all these years, as did their relationships. Dollhouse had a short run but was actually all about the characters.
ReplyDeleteIf I could've voted two options i would've selected Buffy/Angel. I actually hesitated for awhile. But if i took any longer, i wouldn't have voted. So i voted Buffy. But Angel definitely had some serious growth with Wesley, Cordelia, Darla. and hell even Faith! Faith was a huge development. But with Buffy, i'd like to say Xander, Spike (definitely), Giles (i felt he developed a lot since s1-s7) Willow, and Buffy obviously.
ReplyDeleteBuffy and Angel by far in my opinion. I like how they started developing the characters in Buffy and then went on to really flesh them out in Angel. This is how a spin-off should work.
ReplyDeleteMy preference is pre-ship Spike who was the snarkiest, most fun villain of them all. "Happy Meals with legs," killing the Anointed One so they could have more fun - man I miss that Spike.

ReplyDeleteAngel has better development than Buffy as far as characters go. Compare the arcs of Cordelia or Wesley over the show, to say Xander or Oz. Even the villains like Lindsey get well done development, compared to Spike, who was the trope namer for Spikification for a long long time.
ReplyDeleteFirefly had great characters, but the show was too short to really give any of them much in the way of development. Such a pity.
I'd say Firefly because even though it was incredibly short, the characters do change. But gotta go with Dollhouse, since they gave Topher morality, Echo becomes a full-fledged person, DeWitt becomes a decent moral, maternal person, not just a corporate drone who perceives herself as moral, in two seasons.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Buffy because of Willow and Spike. Probably two of the best develped on the television history. But i think the "best" developed character on the Whedonverse is Wesley. He became such a great character on Angel.
