The Originals, season 1, episode 10: The Casket Girls or as I like to call it: Girl Power Rises and Falls (Or Does It?)
Hello and welcome to a new episode of The Originals. In this episode:
- Everyone looks for Davina
- Marcel and Elijah team up with Klaus and become his lackeys
- Joshua and Cammi team up with Davina and become The Unfortunates
- Davina owns everyone’s a$$ but gets owned by her own weakness
- The fiddler falls off the roof
- Rebekah turns mastermind
- Hayley tries to run the plot and gets bitten by it instead
- Sophie does something that starts something I can’t figure out yet
So much happened in this episode that I don’t think the list I posted even covers half of it. The gist of the episode was supposedly girl power even though I don’t think anyone won at the end, though the girls might have hatched a plan that might go somewhere.
The episode opens with the flashback of three girls being sent to marry some governor, who is either a vampire who wants to eat them or a jerk who is into polygamy. They end up getting attacked by a mob and saved by Rebekah, which for some reason spawns a festival even though no one other than Rebekah and the girls survived to tell their tale. I guess New Orleans has Rebekah to thank for this bizarre tradition.
Elijah tries to charm Hayley to be his date for the festivities. He fails. Marcel tries the same with Rebekah. He fails too, which tempts me to dub the festival the celebration of Blue Balls instead of Casket Girls.
Turns out Marcel and Klaus’ strongest weapon Davina is missing. Without her neither have any leverage against the witches even though the witches don’t seem much of a threat these days so I didn’t understand the fuss over this issue. Perhaps it was Klaus feeling offended that his authority was questioned by a 16 year old and decided to go homicidal. The only explanation I usually could find for the stuff Klaus does is pretty much that: he’s a petty homicidal maniac who somehow manages to make everyone dance to his tune.
Meanwhile Davina is with Cammi helping her give birth to her repressed memories. The ring-less nice vamp Joshua is with them and together they form an alliance I will call The League of the Unfortunates.
Hayley is watched by two thugs yet somehow manages to double cross both Elijah and Davina by helping Sophie with a spell. She does this because Sophie promises to lift the curse on her family. I still thought after all she and Elijah had shared, that it was pretty selfish of her to backstab everyone like that.
The witches looking for Davina alerts her to their spell. She and Cammi try to escape. But instead of doing something smart, like boarding a train to someplace far away, they decide to roam the streets during the celebrations, then go visit Father Kieran, the first place anyone would look for them.
As predicted the witches show up and knock Cammi out and that's as far as she goes in this plot. Davina kills the witches, gets a phone call from Klaus who tells her he has her barely-ever-there boyfriend in custody and if she wants to see him again she has to come to him.
Joshua finally gets out of Cammi’s place when the sun goes down and finds Davina and tells her not go to Klaus. Davina tells him something I had been thinking since the episode started: she is the most powerful witch in town. There is no point for her to be so scared of everyone and be constantly on the run. She could kick all their collective assess if she wants and that’s exactly what she goes to do.
A couple of interesting observations occurred to me as I watched Davina give the boys club a run for their money. First how much her infatuation with the fiddler boy cost her by preventing her to exercise the full extent of her bad-assery. I was thinking if I were her I would distance myself from that boy as much as possible, maybe make him go far away from me, so that no one could ever use him against me.
The second issue was when she tortured Elijah. I had considered Elijah the ultimate noble on the show, yet his status was knocked down a peg or two this episode. Unlike Marcel whose main objective in sticking with Klaus was to protect Davina, Elijah had no reason to do Klaus’ bidding. Yet throughout the episode he followed him around like a loyal puppy. I could only assume it is because he cares about him and wants to redeem him somehow. But considering Klaus’ murderous intents and actions Elijah’s loyalty was a bit questionable Sure he made a pact with Marcel to prevent Davina’s death, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that was Marcel’s initiative. And considering someone still died in the end I don’t fault Davina for making him choke on blood when she finally got to him.
The surprise in all this is Rebekah who decides to play a Power Puff Girl in order to lure Davina to her side. She takes Davina, Unfortunate Joshua, and the fiddler to Marcel’s garden, to cure Davina from her loyalty to Marcel. This is where Klaus proves how vicious he could be, even when knocked out. Turns out he had compelled the fiddler to drink poisoned water and offer some to Davina, which puts both of them out of commission. This is what I meant by this guy being a liability. Davina is playing too big a game to have someone as vulnerable as that hanging over her head. I feel terrible saying this but when the guy was finally taken out I actually felt better for Davina.
But Davina herself doesn’t die, this time because Marcel one-ups Klaus by forcing one of the witched to put a protection spell on her. So Davina lives, mourns the loss of Mr. Liability, and moves on to another stage of the plan.
At first, when I saw Rebekah coming back to the mansion handing Davina’s unconscious body to Klaus I thought the girls had lost. But later, listening to her monologue to Tierry, and seeing Davina awake and fine, I realized what was going on. This could turn to a win for the girls after all. Davina holds the affections of Marcel, who has some kind of brotherly attachment to her. So while Rebekah didn’t manage to influence him Davina just might do it. Plus she is a super witch with no liability to cripple her anymore. On the other hand Cammi has the same hold over Klaus and if Rebekah could get her to her side too she has leverage over two of the main players in the game, plus she has Tierry. The only one left will be Elijah who is easy to handle because he’s still more of a gentleman than a schemer. The only wild card would be Hayley, Sophie and the witches, who may cause them trouble.
Speaking of trouble, looks like it already happened. While everyone was running around town looking for Waldo Davina, Hayley and Sophie did a bad bad thing. Something about Elijah’s hygienic ex-lover is going to be unearthed that would apparently change everything. I could only assume she’ll be a new menace who will come sweeping across town, but before that happens we have to watch a bit more about how Davina’s overcharged powers will bite her in the back.
Next episode: Davina has too much power and no one knows what to do with her. Also New Orleans might burn to the ground. Stay tuned to find out why.
Let me know what you thought of this jam packed episode in the comments.

I don't know, I believe Elijah when he said that he wanted to help Davina. He had no reason to lie about it. Elijah can also be a badass when he wants to be so I wouldn't count him out as a threat, I think it's more of the fact that Elijah doesn't seem to desire the throne himself is what doesn't make him stick out as an immediate candidate but if his family is threatened, watch out! Well.... as long as you're not Kol or Finn apparently, lol. I still miss Kol. :(
ReplyDeleteI actually liked that Hayley backstabbed everyone to Sophie because that makes her closer to her TVD persona that backstabbed everyone with turning the hybrids in to Klaus and later again when she told Katherine of the cure off-screen which set off a whole chain of domino's that she still hasn't answered for. The Hybrid thing was seriously messed up btw.
I think Hayley was in character actually so I was glad to see some consistency with her. She was friends with Tyler (and was obviously into him) so she kept him out of the hybrid slaughter that she and Shane maneuvered Klaus into committing for them - and that was in exchange for a flash drive with info about where her dead parents were buried. Her top priority at the moment is to have the curse reversed so she'll probably do anything to achieve that (and this time she's only sending Davina to her death - last time it was 12 hybrids and Carol Lockwood).
ReplyDeleteThe thing is though - Rebekah is using Davina too. Klaus was the most upfront about the fact he was using her. Elijah & Marcel are much more subtle about it, but now Rebekah has her own agenda and she's hoping to be able to use Davina.
It keeps her motivations consistent too, which I like. And in this darker, badder world of The Originals, it fits to bring that back around. I don't exactly want everyone stabbing each other in the backs all the time, but it makes sense there's going to be a learning curve in how they're all going to figure out how to... relate to each other? For want of a better phrase.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think Rebekah's only reason is that she's all upset at Marcel and blames Klaus for what happened between them (although since Rebekah probably helped raise Marcel from the time he was 10 I can see why Klaus thinks its weird and has an issue with them being together). A few episodes ago she was ready to leave town and get her own life. What happened to that? Plus she's using Davina just as much as Klaus was now.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a fault on TO part that they didn't reveal Hayley's past when Tyler came around, that would have been the perfect time to do so. Without watching the TVD eps, I can see how peeps who hadn't seen them would be confused over her behavior. That ep with Tyler glossed over her involvement big time.
ReplyDeleteAt least this time she was only an accomplice to one would be murder and it didn't even take place, so it's no where near as bad what happened in TVD. Well, YET I guess with the Celeste thing, things could get a whole lot worse, lol. Celeste has got to be a more interesting villain then Silas turned out to be... *fingers crossed*
Rebekah is definately as guilty as the rest of them for trying to manipulate Davina to her own end. At least Klaus is the most honest about it, too bad he's the most brutal about it too. Killing a 16 year old girls crush/boyfreind is not the way to her heart. Bad Klaus. No cookie for you.
ReplyDeleteYeah i can't get on board with that reason, I want/need it to be MORE than than. Ugh! Klaus thinks anyone who gets with his family is weird, so i'm going to shrug that off. None of his family can have a love interest, but when it's him, it's all ok. Smh. Marcel isn't ten anymore. He's like 30-33 in his human yrs. And this is vampire yrs we're talking here. Klaus might've seen him as a brother, but that doesn't mean Rebekah did. So idgas what Klaus thinks. Looking out for his sister is one thing (seeing how she chooses wrongly all the time) but not allowing you siblings to experience any type of happiness outside of you is another. That just bugs me, It always has.
ReplyDeleteAs for Rebekah leaving, well she did leave, and circled back to help Elijah and Klaus get Hayley back. I think with getting Hayley back and making sure Hayley was safe. She also, (in that time) realized she couldn't leave. B/c another girl, namely Davina was also in trouble? I guess she realized she was more useful to stay. And i think her anger towards Marcel, is what is driving her to stay. I think she wants him to get his, before she flies the coop for real.
Unless the cookie is laced with vervain, i'd shove a whole box down his throat. lol
ReplyDeleteYeah, that would have made sense. In some ways, I think what she's doing now is a little more dark, in that the "promise" back then was that Silas would resurrect those who sacrificed for him, and... she knows how that worked out.
ReplyDeleteWell with the Harvest Ritual, the sacrifices are suppose to come back to life when it's complete so it's still kinda like Silas in a way that the murdered parties won't stay dead. Buuuuuut, yeah, she should know better and her falling for the same thing twice really makes her look dumb or flat out evil if she truly just didn't give a flying "truck" over what happened to Davina as long as Sophie kept her word about the curse.
ReplyDeleteConsidering this is her second foray into this territory, I'm going to say it's the second. Which isn't all that bad really. I can like dark characters - I wouldn't like any of the Mikaelsons otherwise, I just can't like characters that have their pasts retconned to make them more likable which is what she was for the majority of TO before now.
Lol, fair enough, he totally deserved it this ep.
ReplyDeleteSure did!! Although i must say, i really enjoyed his hybrid features. First time we ever got a look at that, fur and all. That was cool of the writers to do.
ReplyDeleteKlaus never really seemed to care about Rebekah/Matt and he had no issue with her and Stefan hooking up in TVD Season 4 (or in 1922). His issue with Stefan was he didn't think Stefan could be low-profile enough and Mikael had caught up to them. So we've been told that Klaus hates all her boyfriends but I don't feel like we've seen that. She also hooked up with Damon in Season 3 and Kol teased her about it but Klaus I don't think ever said anything about it.
ReplyDeleteVervain mixed with Wolfsbane.
ReplyDeleteI love this episode Rebekah and Davina teaming up I hope Rebekah can get Cami on her side too I hope she succeed in taking everything away from her brothers I love Klaus because he doesn't apogolize for who he is but I do think he wants to be a better person especailly when he with Cami I do think Elijah is the noble one but sometimes I wish he stop trying to make Klaus a better person I Klaus needs to learn that on his own I love this show but it's such a guy show that I like seeing the women standing up for themselves hope they can win sometimes
ReplyDeleteThe problem isn't Klaus' character exactly. It's Klaus' character being badly written on The Originals. He's fine on TVD, but for some reason Michael Narducci and Julie Plec are suddenly obsessed with making him a total savage now. As for Marcel, I think there's a possibility that he's capable of bad things just like Celeste was. I read somewhere that Celeste supposedly handed information to law enforcement or something about the Originals. If she tried to expose them and attract Mikael's attention, it would explain why Klaus killed her. Marcel could be guilty of a similar crime. I wouldn't be surprised if his deep dark secret involved forcing the Originals out of New Orleans so that he could take over. Then again, Klaus could have avoided killing Stefan, Damon, or Matt just because they were protecting Elena. I know that vampire nests don't factor into the mythology of these shows, but when those three siblings try to live under one roof while one of them is fighting for power, is it possible that they're not really a family, just a nest? When I say nest, I'm referring to vampires living in the same place that are unable to get along. Elijah wants to take something from Klaus to pay him back for the daggering. Rebecca wants to overthrow Klaus because of Marcel. At some point, she might become a threat to Marcel. That is not a family, it's a disaster.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad someone finally said it. It's about time Hayley showed herself for what she really is. Someone like that never changes. Hayley is a very good actress, and Elijah is skilled at manipulation too. I prefer characters like Klaus who don't bother to hide what they are. What you see is what you get. The only problem is what the writers/producers have made Klaus capable of. Some of it doesn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteReally?? That's b/c Matt would reject Rebekah all on his own. Klaus didn't need to do anything. And as far as Stefan, HE was as diabolical as Klaus, so of course Klaus didn't mind UNTIL Stefan became a threat to Him and Rebekah In the 1920s. It wasn't Rebekah that Mikael was after, he was after Klaus. Klaus as always was being greedy with his sibs...As far as Klaus seeing them in the sack...again Stefan rejected her by trying to sneak out the door..so again Klaus had no reason to step in, same with Damon...REJECTED, and Kol said something, yes, but he never said Damon's name. He didn't know Rebekah slept with Damon. No one (Out of the originals) knew that Damon and Rebekah slept together, except for Elena and Stefan....so yes, Rebekah is ALWAYS choosing the wrong men. Every man rejects her or uses her in some way, then washes their hands with her. Klaus has a problem with everyone one of them, just as long as they pose a threat, between him and Be. Or him and Elijah for that matter. So yeah we have seen a lot of jealousy on Klaus' part when it comes to Rebekah and men. It's all over the place.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! EXACTLY!!! Lol
ReplyDeleteOuch! Hehe. Careful, he might give you the puppy dog eyes of doom for being so mean to him, lol.
ReplyDeletefor me this was the best episode of the season, everyone knows they cant trust each other and its what keeps this really interesting... once one person makes a plan the others tried to screw that plan up and so are the others, they dont care how many people die, if it works or not as long as it goes how they wanted to... Now we have a Rebecca looking to reign New Orleans how far will that go before she decides to do something else¿? im looking forward to this is going to be an exited second part of the season... it`s way better than TVD now!
ReplyDeletethere is no real reason for celest to be alive again. she might ruin Elijah and Hayleys chance to be something
ReplyDeletein the last scene when Hayley says 'killer' it sounds like she hinting to something like they have their own code or something
