Chicago P.D Episode 1.01 - Stepping Stone - Review

I was very disappointed with Chicago P.D last night. The first scene had nothing to do with the rest of the story, but I get the reason behind it, they just wanted to show how tough Jason Beghe's character can be with the suspects. The whole show failed to follow one story. It was kind of like "ER" with multiple story-lines going on at the same time, during the same time period. But they failed to reach that concept.
The main story with the Cuban Drug boss, is so played out in Cop shows these days. A long with ending the episode with a kid from the projects, getting beat up from a family member or gang member and wanting to get out of that lifestyle. So predictable.

The acting was no better, it just seem like Jason and Elias characters where the only ones that really knew what they where doing in the scenes. And yes, there was some cross over actors from Chicago Fire but they didn't stay very long. Most of the other actors just had this look on their faces saying "ok boss, what do we do know?''
I had to watch this episode a few times. Mainly because, the first time it couldn't keep my attraction. But how I see new series is that, they just need to find their feet. Once they do, the show can be really great!  I think this show has room to grow, we just need to give it time!

Its actually not bad for a new drama.. Lets hope NBC keeps it at the same time slot so the ratings stay up!

  1. Most the reviews I've seen of this rave about how good it was. I have to admit I loved it and for the first episode I was impressed. I think this show is a keeper.

  2. I would like to politely disagree. I quite liked Chicago PD. I felt the first scene was integral because it showed both tough guy Voight and it's where he got the name of the first drug dealer that Pulpo killed. Plus I appreciated that shot where Voight's drawn a line in the dirt, and you can see the Chicago skyline in the background. Very symbolic.

After that I felt the story was fairly linear, though I admit I got a bit lost at the the Cooper transportation guy bit. There were some overused elements: 'kids trying to get out', 'undercover buys ', getting killed on the job, which is something even Chicago Fire used in their Pilot episode. And it's true, everyone was always looking to Voight, which is understandable for Lindsey, Hoffstead, Olinksky but you would think Antonio wouldn't be so friendly with a guy he arrested.... Maybe he's just super professional?

Also I suppose the whole ring thing may have seemed out of place, but one of the goals of the show is to showcase the average beat cops day and Intelligence unit's side by side. I enjoyed that storyline, it provided a bit of a breather

What held everything together was the acting and fast pace. I thought the acting was pretty top notch. I especially like Voight, and Lindsey' 's humour was great.

I may be totally biased because I've been waiting for this show for a quite a while now. I can only compare it to Intelligence, which was another pilot I was eagerly awaiting. PD won that battle hands down. Compared to Intelligence, I thought the acting was better, storyline wasn't far fetched, and they didn't give everything away in the first episode plus they gave something to come back for.

I don't have very high standards when it comes to television though :) You're quite right, there's still plenty of room to grow for Chicago PD and I hope the writers pull it off! Thanks for the review :)

  3. Okay I'm gonna be really frank and harsh, I usually don't comment if I don't like a show cause I know it's not fun to read when you are a fan of it but my comment will be balanced out by the three good ones so ;)
I thought it was bad. The acting was just terrible. And the blond cop was a goner from her very first screen, it was just too obvious. Only good thing that can come out of this is if they transfer Mills over to this show so I don't have to see him on Chicago Fire.
Man that last bit was harsh, I feel bad (at least a bit). Truth told I didn't like Chicago Fire to begin with either but I stuck to it because of a few good actors/characters (which is not the case with PD unfortunately, Elias isn't enough to keep me around) and it grew on me so who knows...

We'll see what happens, they only gave it a half season. Not much time, but long enough
