Alex Karev’s words — and Justin Chambers’ acting — might give you chills in this week’s Grey’s Anatomy.

The doc’s emotions have been simmering under his tough-guy surface ever since his dad first appeared — or, really, reappeared — and in this week’s mid-season finale, everything will come to a boil.

It doesn’t start off that way, of course. Alex finally sits down with his dad and even starts reminiscing with him about a trip to the carnival when Alex was a kid. But things take a dark turn when Alex’s mother comes up in the conversation. For anyone who’s watched the show from the beginning and is familiar with the struggles of Alex’s past, this is a vastly important character moment for him.
