LOVED IT!!, at the beginning was a little slow but after that, it got AWESOME!!, it's so great that they're making him look so clever and sexy, and Jessica De Gouw is surprising me as well, I hated her on arrow, but here she's making a very good job.
really like how the story is building.... I would like to find out more on Von Helsing, but expect that will be later after Drac's background is set up. interesting bit with the opium addled seers, and that the blonde lady is a bit of a slayer herself... as far as the experiments to have Drac be a daywalker, I hope that they are able to have him do that, but be only temporary or for short periods at a time as I would hate for them to abandon some of the basics of vamp lore...
I can't say that I'm familiar with the details of the depiction in Stoker's book, but just about every other work I've seen on Drac old movies, tv etc always depicted the weakness to sunlight which seems to be generally accepted as canon lore, with exceptions of course and I do like the idea that a being that powerful should have a vulnerability
it is delightfully funny that people presume to have a "canon" for folklore that is centuries old. however, that is where literature and mainstream entertain such a movies etc.. differ. what might be the norm for the small and silver screen has not always been for books. and yes, he could walk during the day but it would weaken him. he also could not cross running water, and had to sleep on the dirt of him homeland, could turn into a bat and was a delightfully middle aged douchey aristocrat. what you think of a "cannon" is more modernization of the overall mythos. it has and will continue to change overtime.
Vampires have been reinvented so many times there's not really a such thing as vampire lore anymore. I prefer the older depictions though.
But what makes me the most sad is that vampire legends go back almost as far as civilization in some degree, I'd love to see a show that dealt with some of those ancient vampire legends.
well, that is not entirely true if you read accounts from not only Europe but other regions you will see they have consistent folklore and mythology when it comes to those in and around the vampire mythos. For example a chiang-shih in China is still a chiang-shih even though the legends is over several centuries old.
What changes, and what you think of as vampire lore, is actually quite modern. Stoker is actually the one to codify the idea of what westerns and popcorn munching movies goers expect when we think of vampires. Before his tale, and those of a few other like Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla or James Malcolm Rymer's Varney the Vampire, the closest we get to what we recognize as a modern vampires was the chiang-shih in China (which prowled the night and resided in corpses and feasted on their blood). Before then their were only folklore and myths, that still exist, of vampire like creatures but not ones as we see today. vampire today like Dracula, Blade, Angel, Lestat, they are wholly a literary creation.
There is no Canon on mythology its ever changed for various stories. Only Canon in each of them its the label such as Vampire/Zombies/Werewolves and key info such as Immortal/Undying/Longevity, besides that everything is fair game.
loved this episode better than episode 1 ..It has room to build and by the look of it we get more into the story this week , i am glad that it is only 10 episodes as they can wrap it up it it doesn't get picked up , rather than it being half way through the season..Though i have faith in the ratings after all hart of dixie was bad ratings at first and ringer had great ratings , but ringer was cancelled and hart of dixie was picked up and is now on it's 3rd season...So nobody can tell if it's a good show at the moment as you have to let the story build before you judge!...As for his accent he's just pretending to be american jeez , when he's round about people that know about him his voice his English ..I know people are free to there own say but all am saying is give it a chance to build then say bye bye if you don't like it after all supernatural to me and alot of people i know started off lame and so did other shows.. Anyway's i loved the ending especially the ending of this episode like how i was left on a cliff hanger (kind of)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Too many commercials.

ReplyDeleteyou do know that Dracula, in Stoker's book which this is loosely based on, could walk during the day, right?
