Ok I really have to question how no one can figure out what he looks like. I've never seen that hood down far enough to obscure the details of his face, and I've seen him stand close enough to people for them to easily see his face.
Any idea which episode this is? Stephen Amell also released an action pic of Black Canary/Arrow. Can be seen on his TL @amellywood
I am really curious because if we go by episode synopses Oliver hasn't met the Canary by 2x03 and will maybe know more abut her in 2x04. But when do they start working together?
All this talk about Black Canary being an inspiration for Laurel, we better be getting a lot of scenes between them.
I know that perfectly, because I am one of the oldest members of DC fanbase.
But you know what else is true?
IN EVERY ITERATION BOTH CANARIES DO NOT EXIST AT THE SAME TIME TOO.
Laurel is her mother's successor. THere's no another canary running around as she was becoming one.
In show terms - imagine if Yao Fei was running around the town calling himself Arrow during the first season. Its all about perception.
I am not against having another black canary, but the way the writers chose to implement it, will change perception of Laurel's canary from successor to mere copycat, THAT's the problem.
Frankly, that's a silly and presumptuous way to look at a storyline before it even begins.
Laurel needs to learn how to fight. She needs to go through a whole arc to justify her becoming a costumed vigilante. How on earth would succeeding a mentor diminish that when the mentor hasn't even been established. You mentioned Carolina/Elena on TVD (part of your hard-on to bash that show in every post you make), but Caroline was an established character. We saw that portion of a character arc before, we haven't seen (nor do we have reason to care about) this Canary in the same way.
Arrow and TVD? Apples and Oranges. Besides, legacy characters (superhero identities passing from one person to the next) are a longstanding, successful tradition in DC lore and, more often than not, serves to enrich the history of the character along with providing a bigger emotional impact.
All the things you mentioned can be done without having a present-day Canary doing the things Laurel will do.
And with all due respect, your argument about Caroline makes no sense. We are not talking about perception of Caroline's character, but about Elena's. With Caroline going through that stuff, the novelty wore off. Hell, with VIckie going through that stuff it was already wearing thin and Vickie was not even a character, but a stereotype. THen Elena spent 2 seasons doing nothing but caring and vomiting rainbows and when the writers decided to turn her, half the cast went through that already and no one cared.
What this does to Laurel is similar. It doe snot matter what Laurel does or how badass she becomes. THe impact the first canary makes will always be the mettle now. Sure she needs a mentor, but does that mentor HAVE to do the exact same things as she does and interact with present day Narrative. The reason Yao Fei worked as proto-Arrow, was because he was self-contained and because he NEVER WAS Arrow. He was Oliver's mentor and his inspiration but he was not running around the present day narrative fulfilling the same role, as Oliver was just getting into it.
THere's absolutely no need to have a black canary in present day before Laurel. And it creates more problems than it solves.
ALready explained that, no need to be patronizing.
You know what Legacy characters not do? COEXIST WITH THEIR SUCCESSORS. That's the problem.
AS I already explained below, I have no problem with there being a Canary before Laurel. We had Yao Fei as proto-Arrow after all.
What I DO have a problem is that that Canary is running around in present day Narrative lessening the impact of when eventually Laurel becomes that.
And while, yes, TVD is Twilight Lite and Arrow is actually decent, the situation in THIS CASE is horrifyingly the same.
First impressions is everything and there are already quite a lot of laurel-haters in the fandom that grasp at straws to despise her. The last thing this show needs is to lessen the impact of the eventual storyline of hers.
No two people assume the same superhero identity at the same time. That's not happening here either. Two people, however, do exist at the same time. Sometimes there are even apprenticeships. Even when there aren't, plenty of successors are around when someone else occupies the mantle. The torch isn't always passed from one character to the next posthumously.
But its always passed. And you do not know who would become the next successor. Not to mention that comic books run for decades.
In this case, however,. Laurel has already begun her journey towards that. And current Canary is already affecting the characters surrounding her. Believe it or not but "I will do the exact same things, with exact same name" does not exactly work in a tv show, especially if current Canary leave enough of an impact.
The BEST case I can see is current canary being crippled and becoming the Oracle, while Laurel takes over(so we have all three birds of prey), but even that has Laurel's Canary have lesser impact because someone else is doing the same things already. And I already can predict the comments the fandom will throw towards her when she does become BC ("aww Laurel never does anything original", etc)
I just don't agree with your fears of a lesser impact. I highly doubt anyone will really have a problem with "same things, same name."
If anything, the impact will be more profound when the torch is passed because it's likely something horrible (and fatal) will eventually happen to the current Canary. (who is largely assumed to be, although not confirmed, Laurel's presumed dead sister) The emotional impact of how Laurel becomes Black Canary is likely to outweigh any "been there, done that" nitpicking that may arise.
Ok, this answers my question from last week's episode. That wasn't Laurel from last week, and THIS isn't Laurel now...It took me less than 2 seconds to say "That's not Laurel" Whoever this Black Canary is, well from remembering her skills at the end of the episode, she's amateur at best. If it was Laurel i probably be more excited about it. You think i'd be excited now just having BC on at all. But i'm not. I'm not EXTREMELY disappointed but i am disappointed. See, in my mind, I had this theory, (based on what Laurel said at the cemetery) that Laurel would dress up as a Vigilante (BC), practice her martial arts skills on a few punks down in the streets, get her named dropped, and seek out "The Hood" to take him down. That would've made a lot more sense. With this stand in anonymous BC woman, idk wth is going on now. And to me, this doesn't make sense. I mean I know we all read about it during the hiatus, but now that it's "coming to life" i'm more disappointed than before.
Hey, they went with that storyline before. I don't see why they wouldn't revisit it. Even AFTER they said she was "dead" until i see her dead body in that coffin, i refuse to believe otherwise. As for changing actresses, that tends to happen a lot in shows, so don't knock the idea.
How come? Laurel isn't even in the current DC universe, let alone the current Black Canary. They also introduced Tommy, a new Arrow character, into the comics who may become New 52's Merlyn.
Laurel will either become a fan of/or appreciate this black canary(who probably has no superpower). and in the end this black canary will die saving laurel prompting Laurel's latent superpower and her taking up the mantel of Black Canary. DONE!!!
Maybe things have changed since The New 52 continuity took over, but DC had all sorts of rules on Smallville about what they could and couldn't change.
Making the Canary someone else entirely is a big change.
Uhh, really having a mixed feelings about this Black Cannary stand-in character. It lessens the impact of when Laurel eventually becomes that.
I am having flashbacks of Caroline turning two seasons before ELena in TVD and on how much they managed to destroy Elena's character and turn her into complete mary sue via that, to the extent that by the time she DID turn, there was nobody left to care.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I'm not seeing anything?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I tried to embed it from facebook but it failed. Try now.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't it be Green Arrow instead of The Vigilante now? Think they kind of my a point of that after the last scene on the premier.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the haven't really addressed him with that name yet.
ReplyDeleteThanks, that's great.
ReplyDeleteOk I really have to question how no one can figure out what he looks like. I've never seen that hood down far enough to obscure the details of his face, and I've seen him stand close enough to people for them to easily see his face.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, isn't he supposed to recognize her too? They both share a history.
ReplyDeleteMuch better than the awful Smallville-look.

In virtually every iteration, Dinah Lance is not the first Black Canary.

Its just arrow for now. as his character evolves he will eventually be called Green Arrow.

Maybe Oliver can be inspired by BC and get an eye mask as well- it beats green makeup. BC looks good.
ReplyDeleteArrow and TVD? Apples and Oranges. Just posted on Facebook , by saving the image of black canary an arrow , it works just fine

Apparently Sarah Lance randomly survive getting sucked out of an exploding ship and while at it, changed her own actress.
ReplyDeleteHope for the best, expect the worst. :D
