Welcome to the family is created by Mike Sikowitz who also happened to write the pilot as well. Sikowitz is more known as a writer. He wrote episodes for Rules of Engagement, Grounded for Life and Friends. The Pilot was directed by Michael Engler.
The series is about two newly High School graduates, Junior, the son of a Latino family, and Molly, the daughter of a Caucasian family who decide to get married after discovering that Molly is pregnant.
The cast include Mike O'Malley (Glee), Ricardo Chavira (Desperate Housewives), Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight), Justina Machado (Six Feet Under), Joseph Haro (Awkward.) and Ella Rae Peck (Gossip Girl).
I loved the pilot because of the amazing chemistry between Dan and Miguel (O’Malley and Chavira). Seriously those two gave a new level to the pilot. They are so good together that I almost forgot the rest of their families.
The only thing that annoyed me was the character of Molly. I just hope she will evolved into more than an average teenager, little bit too dumb and irresponsible for me. All the others were great in this pilot (even the little brother who made me laugh without saying anything).
I wasn’t really concern by the cultural aspect of the show. In my opinion it would have been as great without the Latino-Caucasian factor but maybe in the future they could do interesting stories about that. Hopefully nothing too cliché. It is a sitcom after all.
To be honest I will definitely watch the second episode. The cliffhanger at the end make me want more and I put the show on my Fall Schedule. The premiere of the show will air Thursday October 3rd at 8:30 PM on NBC but the pilot is already available online on Hulu (US Only) at http://www.hulu.com/watch/530998

Molly was the only only good part.
ReplyDeletegood review. I watched the pilot and found the ep solid with a lot of potential. I wasn't sure what to make of the Molly character at first with her being the dumb role, but thought that it was interesting as that role is usually a guy, and figure that the growth that all the characters will eventually make will be a good reason to watch. I wasn't blown away, but am curious enough to give it 3 more eps to make it on my rotation
ReplyDeleteMolly is the biggest sticking point for me too. If they show real growth in her character pretty quickly, I will probably continue to watch. However, I can see the character getting so annoying that it isn't worth it. They will have to tread carefully with her. Other than that, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would and the twist at the end was genuinely surprising to me.
ReplyDeleteI liked the pilot and if the quality is kept up could see if being one of the top new comedies this year. Personally I liked the Molly character but I'm a fan of the actress that plays. People are commenting on how dumb she is but her character is actually pretty realistic. When I was in high school I had friends that were just like her, not all teenage girls are but some are. Most grow out of it and i think they plan on having her the same way, like how at the end they had her be smart enough to not get on the roller coaster.
ReplyDeleteI liked the pilot. I didn't have a problem with Molly...until she screwed up the word patriarchal a second time. I was fine with her being (I was going to say ditz but she doesn't strike me as a ditz so much as an intelligent kid too lazy to do the work.) The second patriarchal flub seemed like they were making her character too stupid to learn.
ReplyDeleteI also really like that the differences between these two families had nothing to do with race. I expect to see that repeated in the reviews but it wasn't in the show. The issues were the difference in parenting style and the lost potential. I was worried, when I saw the promo, that they were going to use that tired trope as the basis for the show.
I'd give it a B
