The Walking Dead - AMC Developing Spin-Off - Press Release

16 Sept 2013

AMC announced today that the network is in the initial stages of developing a companion series to its original drama series The Walking Dead, which premiered on AMC in October of 2010. The Walking Dead is currently the #1 show on television among adults 18-49. Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are on board as executive producers, with AMC Studios set to produce. The companion series has a target on-air date of 2015.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

In addition to Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels and Low Winter Sun, AMC recently greenlit two new drama series for 2014,Halt & Catch Fire and Turn. The network today began shooting a new pilot, Line Of Sight, directed and executive produced by Jonathan Demme, and has a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Television for a spinoff series of Vince Gilligan’s landmarkBreaking Bad, based on the Saul Goodman lawyer character with the working title Better Call Saul.

Season four of The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 13. The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series created and written by Robert Kirkman and published by Skybound, Kirkman’s imprint at Image Comics.
The Walking Dead season three out-delivered everything on television including The Big Bang Theory, The Voice, Game of Thrones, Modern Family, and almost doubled The Bible for the broadcast season for adults 18-49.

  1. So.... just another group of survivors? Not that interested to be honest. It's a very logical thing for AMC to do though..

  2. Spin-offs, spin-offs everywhere.

  3. This would be interesting, since the walking dead is almost a little stuck into the storyline of the comic book with a little wiggle room. It could work, but kind of weird if the walking dead is still an ongoing series. What would they call it? The Other Walking Dead?

  4. I always wanted a spinoff starring grown up Carl and Kickass

  5. I wonder if it will be in another part of the world. I haven't read the comics so I am uncertain if other areas in the world/groups of survivors have been followed.

  6. They could call it 'Things &Stuff'

  7. Mixed feelings about this spin-off too...

  8. I'd love it if the new group for this spin-off consisted of the characters from the webisodes.

  9. Hey, I'm all for it! More walkers, more amazing kills/deaths, and hopefully another great set of characters.

  10. I'm excited to see what they will come up with when they're not guided by a comic. A completely blank canvas, I'm looking forward to seeing the apocalypse through other survivors eyes and see the kind of problems they face.

  11. Not bad. Maybe after spinoff they think of talent show. Imagine Dancing with the Dead. They are dancing, suddenly partner is starting to falling apart and he/she is trying to fix him.

  12. Hehe, sounds like a show I would watch! I was thinking something more along the lines of Michonne taking on a job as a taxidermist, but your idea is a lot better. ;)

  14. I'll watch it, but is it really necessary (apart from being a money-spinner for AMC)?
I do miss the urban environs of Season 1, so maybe this spin-off could be set in Vegas or New York, to contrast with the more rural direction the main series has taken. Either way it needs a TOTALLY different setting and style, otherwise it's just going to dilute the main series.

Even better would be if it is set in a different country. TWD: Tokyo! come on AMC, make it happen :P

Or perhaps we'll get the point of view of the people in some small island nation that has so far managed to keep the zombies out and have been efficient at getting rid of their dead before they turn. They could be sending parties to the mainland for samples and supplies, in order to sustain themselves while striving to find a cure and a way to communicate with any survivors.

Something like that, something different, not just another group of people trying to stay alive, but a group of people trying to do something about it.

  15. As long as it has lots of zombies, I'll be happy.

  16. could be interesting if done right - at first I was thinking about a spinoff of one of the current characters, but really think that it would be much better/fresher if it's new people set in another location, maybe in another country perhaps.... just as long as it's well written

  17. Not sure how I feel about this to be honest... but I'll probably still watch it regardless!

  18. Make it like the games. I'll be happy. Not copying the games but that kind of style would be cool. Where anything could happen.

  19. Supernatural is getting one too. Then you can look back a few years, Dr Who spawned Torchwood.

  20. Would love it if it was based on Clementine and Lee :-)

  21. It would be awesome if it would run during the off time of The Walking Dead! What a great way to fix our TWD jonesing while waiting for it to come back on! I am all for it and will totally watch regardless. It will be like full length webisodes! lol Wonder when they are going to start filming and when it will air?
