Gawd that was cool, China White was a surprise to see so soon! I'm really excited for Arrow returning, it might actually be the one I'm more excited for!
I see that Laurel continues her trend of doing badass things but ultimately being overpowered; Kinda tired of it, but it would be awesome that it becomes a thing big enough for it to be adressed if/when she takes the Black Canary mantle.
I don't think the critique of Laurel's physical prowess is all that fair. She's still a civilian with a day job that monopolizes most of her time. People like Oliver and Diggle are constantly putting themselves through a grueling training regimen and have had the opportunity to sharpen their skills in life and death situations for years, whether it be on an island, a battlefield, or on the streets of Starling City. I'd say Laurel handles herself fairly well considering the deficits in training and experience she has compared to the others.
The show has planted the seeds for Laurel becoming the Black Canary by having Detective Lance train her in self-defense, but we still have a ways to go. Laurel still can handle herself better than your average attorney can.
"Better than your average attorney" That cracked me up.
Yeah, I like her, but It just feels like all her badassery goes wasted most of the time and she ends up being saved by someone else, like she can only fight for herself when it doesn't have an impact to the plot or something.
Yeah, I do get that, and I like that it's not about being badass all over the place but self defense; I don't have an issue with her martial art level, but with how it's framed by the plot.
She can almost never get out of a dangerous situation by her own completely, like she can have the upper hand but she always has to end up saved by someone else. And those "saves" become much of the plot -that's the odd thing- too much ends up riding in her being saved. i.e. "Badass in Distress" according to tv tropes.
Yeah, it's not about her being saved or her prowess level , but more about how saving her becomes the plot, often overriding her own competence to extricate herself of dangerous situations when thus far it seemed to be going okay.
Well, the fact that almost every week someone wants to kill her, doesn't help; it just exacerbates everything.
And that's like the only legitimate issue I have with the show really, and its most base level, it's about they not getting the hang around of how to write Laurel into the physical actionI
Really not liking the show's trackrecord of giving Laurel 5 seconds of badassery only to ruin it by placing her into damsel in distress situation right after. So far every time Laurel was allowed to be badass, that happened :/
"...saving her becomes the plot..." Yeah, I can get behind that criticism. Saving Laurel has been the plot of multiple episodes and they can and should put it to rest for a while.
Laurel has to grow into being a badass. She's not like the other protagonists on the show who constantly train and get themselves into these situations on a regular basis. I don't think it's realistic to have the lawyer who had a little self-defense training with her dad to take on and mop the floor with handfuls of professional goons.
Beating on a few bouncers at a nightclub to get Oliver and Tommy out of trouble was reasonable. Having her fend off assassins and professional thugs without any help is a lot less believable right now. Laurel always gives those people a run for their money but Arrow smartly keeps the outcome grounded. She has to develop into someone badass enough to be Black Canary which means its probably a good thing the show is slow-playing her transformation.
Good to see the CW producing more promos that excite viewers. I would love to see Arrow's ratings rise in the second season, although I don't expect it. Much kudos to the CW for working hard to make it happen though.
I have a lot of criticism of Laurel, but her defense skills are not one of them. She knows how to shoot a gun and knows self-defense. My guess is that against a normal criminal any other citizen might face, she would stand her own ground. Her problem is that she keeps getting entangled with the elite criminal element.
Yup, that's pretty much the deal; I feel like the only way they keep bringing her to the plot is by having her become the plot device. I mean, yeah, it's the easier route, but it ends up hurting the character and the narrative if overused.
Oh I am all for development and even though S1 built up the roots for that...The thing is - show doe snot seem to want to allow that to happen.
And the whole "getting put into damseling" scene sequence is used way too frequently with her.
Writers should know better to not do that, that often. Let her shine in less "difficult" situations, let her grow, let her save herself once in a while.
Her constantly being in need of being saved is part of reason certain parts of fanbase spread so much hate towards her character...
While she's still developing into her alter-ego she's going to lose plenty of fights and she's going to need help from time to time. I've got no problem with that. As MeatyStakes mentioned, the problem lies in the show turning the act of rescuing Laurel into a primary plot of multiple episodes. That's just a bad move.
If Laurel needs some assistance from time to time, quickly get her some (it doesn't always have to be Oliver either) and move on with the episode. Don't, as you touched on, turn it into a whole damsel in distress ordeal.
It does feel a lot like lip service to the people who hate damsels-in-distress - having Laurel fight back and show some competence, but ultimately get overpowered and need saving. I get that she's an attorney and doesn't have half the training or experience of someone like Ollie or Diggle, but it's kind of transparent, this attempt to have it both ways: make Laurel a badass, but still ultimately have the man save the day (and woman).
Yeah, I agree...I mean if she were at least competent as a lawyer, but she never seems to be able to complete a case without the help of the hood (and why the hell does nobody consider that it might be a good idea to put the sole survivor of a murder attempt into protective custody?). Though I'm mostly sore about the scene in the finale...she is warned, what, four times to get out of the glades, but doesn't move an inch before the roof is practically falling on her head and even then she still clutches the damned files instead of getting the hell out of there. That's not a "civilian dealing with difficult situations", that's just stupidity.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
