Supernatural - Spin-off in the works

21 Jul 2013

Details are few and far between right now, but here’s what we’ve gleaned: A new character will be introduced in or around Episode 20 (which will serve as a planted pilot for the new show). That character will then anchor the spin-off. While the Winchesters are fond of running around the great outdoors, we’re hearing that the new endeavor will have a more citified feel.

  1. Whoa!

That's all I got right now. J2 are in Nerd HQ.

  2. omg please no... so basically Sam and Dean will accomplish nothing long lasting in Supernatural, that will give some calm. they will move on and someone else will fix problems...

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hmmm. I don't know how I feel about this. We need more info ASAP. I don't want to get my hopes up too soon.

    ReplyDelete
  4. That is very exciting news. Of course, I think they should reach to old characters like Bobby and Rufus and do a prequel instead of new characters, but good for them. I'd love a spin-off starring Misha Collins and the angels as well. Give them their own show.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Don't jump to conclusions yet! We don't even know what it'll be about or even if it'll get picked up.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hmm, I don't know about this. The only spin off I'd be interested in is the adventures of Bobby and Rufus, or something with Charlie.

    ReplyDelete
  7. It would be stupid as hell if Sam and Dean destroyed all of the supernatural characters. The fact that evil will always exist is what makes the fact that Sam and Dean will always face it head on so very impressive.

    Angel having a spin-off didn't make Buffy's journey meaningless.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Agreed that a Bobby and Rufus prequel would be about as awesome a spin-off as ever made. Too bad they aren't trying that.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think they'd be better off spinning of an established character than running the risk of no one liking the new character.

A Jodi Mills spin-off would be cool.
Bobby & Rufus would have been cool. Too bad they're both dead.
Suite Life of Zach & Cas would have been lulzy.
A Garth spin-off would be hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Sadly that won't happen since it's a new character. Hopefully it's someone in the Winchester family or someone who knows the Winchester's well.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hmm, I'm interested. Wonder whether they will go male or female character driven with the spin off - be weird if it were two guys again which makes me think they'll opt for a female lead.

    ReplyDelete
  12. not permanent, but long lasting. Before Supernatural started in the time before the series when hunters battled the supernatural it was at a normal pace, sort of = grounds, no crazy big events were happening. they had stable land for around 2000 years if you can say based on the god stuff happening in 0 time. so i was hoping sam and dean would accomplish something like that peace for a while, small fry would remain but they would be maintainable. come 500 - 100 years some demons had flustered up enough power and breaks loose again...

    ReplyDelete
  13. It is too bad they're not trying for that. Although I'm not surprised, I haven't agreed/liked a lot of the decisions/directions they've taken the show since Season 5 ended.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I would think female also but I'm most interested in knowing if Kripke will have a hand in its development. I'm sure he will NOT be show runner or writer but it would be interesting to see if he is part of the pitch team or not.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think this would be a good place to put Cas. Misha and Cas are popular and he could bring a lot of fans to a new show. That way when Supernatural finally stops, Cas can continue.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Would that mean that if the pilot got picked up it would run contemporary to a hypothetical season ten?
I can't see any old characters being the star. I think they would find someone completely new with maybe the odd older character turning up.
Have to wait and see on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmm. I'm intrigued, but I'm also on the fence about this. I'll have to wait for more news.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mixed feelings, gonna wait for more info before getting too excited about this.

    ReplyDelete
  19. including erasing Ben and Lisa's memories, one of the worst decisions ever

    ReplyDelete
  20. ...Abaddon?

Wait. You guys. New character. Can we please get Maggie Q on this?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Schedule wise it would mean that Supernatural and the spin-off would likely run back to back next season IF it got picked up and if it starred someone only peripherally involved with SPN as we know it. However content-wise, this sounds like it's around first pitch level meaning that it could change rapidly every time someone mentions it. It could end up being no more a part of the Supernatural verse than The Finder was of Bones, meaning a character shows up once in Bones and then is immediately forgotten afterwards. I'm not sure this would be as successful as the CW would hope although that's what this synopsis sounds like. It could however be more like The Originals in which significant characters from The Vampire Diaries are leaving the former show to be on the latter. If that were the case, I would expect to see someone like Castiel, Kevin, Charlie, or even Garth become a lead on the other show along with new characters made just for that show. This would be far more successful in my opinion and I hope the CW goes that route instead. If this is Jeremy Carver's pitch instead of Bob Singer's like I suspect, then it would be likely that he would be offered the show runner job for it.

  22. Lots of ifs there.

Whatever way it goes, the brothers won't be in it and the story told will certainly be something completely different from the Winchesters' family-oriented saga.

As the brother story was what brought fans to love the series, I think it would be very difficult to repeat Supernatural in a spin -off.

As you say it could be a random charatcer al la Finder, like Michael or someone the Winchesters helped and who wants to follow in their footsteps; maybe even a future-type spin-off with some relative of the brothers, which would probably draw in viewers of the original series too.

I really can't see Garth, Kevin , Charlie or even Castiel bringing in big audiences. Not without the backing of the two Winchesters.

For me they have to go with someone completely new and with a new story line.

    X

We still have Amelia on the back-burner. Maybe there's a bun in th eoven after all!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I can see it being a big success even without the Winchesters because many people who have already dropped Supernatural will be likely to try it and a good pilot could provide the springboard it needs. On the other hand, people who don't want to go through 170+ episodes to get caught up with the Winchester saga and cumbersome canon, but who love the premise of hunters killing monsters can jump right in without having to worry about. Then there are the diehard Supernatural fans who will check out it regardless. I know I will be checking it out if it's not about angels.

As for Castiel, while his appearance changes nothing ratings-wise in Supernatural, I would say Misha in anything decent could draw in enough viewers to make it relevant for the CW. After all, the CW renewed 2 shows routinely getting 0.3's in demos. Castiel would definitely draw better than that. I dare say even Garth could draw those numbers. A show doesn't have to have that many viewers to make it successful on the CW.

Currently everything about this is at the IF stage, including the big IF of whether it will ever even get to script stage. That's a huge IF to me.

  24. I would love somethign related to the Men Of Letters :) Maybe in the futur with a whole new generation running the place at full capacity...idk, just throwing ideas around...maybe I'm just too nostalgic about Atlantis being gone cause this bunker does remind me of Atlantis from time to time

    ReplyDelete
  25. It says a new character will anchor the spin-off though...

So whatever it is, no one we know we be a lead apparently.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Curious about it, but doing it with a new character? I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Can't really agree with you here about Castiel and co drawing people in on their own. Even fans of these characters watch primarily for the interaction they have with the brothers.

I can't see the attractiveness of them on their own. For me TPTB would be better starting from scratch with a completely new story-line altogether.

I might watch for that but I certainly wouldn't watch to see some on-going angel/ prophet /Garth/Charlie story.

They need some new players if they want the spin-off to succeed; I'm going to be very CW here and say they need better eye-candy than any of these.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cas and Benny
    Bobby and Jody
    Bobby and Rufus
Bobby and Cas, do you see a pattern here. lol
What ever it is, I will try it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is the pitch but a lot of things can happen on the way to the pilot.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree that people who watch the secondary characters still watch for the brothers. However I disagree that they wouldn't watch an entirely new show that didn't have the brothers in it. It would be very similar to Angel for me. Very few people watched Buffy solely for Angel or Cordelia, yet when those two went to the spin-off everyone I know who watched Buffy also watched Angel. In fact several people ended up liking Angel better.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Exactly, it's not as if they couldn't handle the knowlege or were going to tell the baddies about them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Maybe if fans make enough noise they'll change it to a Bobby/Rufus spin-off instead of a newbie.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I watched Angel first and only went to Buffy to follow Spike.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Christian Kane is available

    ReplyDelete
  35. The idea I thought was the most interesting was the tales of Samuel Colt as a hunter, the spin-off they discussed around S4-S5.
Interesting idea, and to star someone new and not an established character is a great idea. It would need to live up to fan's expectations and when that doesn't happen the shows seem to be quickly cancelled.
It will be interesting because it would need to follow canon, but more simply as to allow new viewers to access the show without watching 170+ episodes to catch up.
If it did use an existing character? A hunter say in the city? It would need to be a Supernatural hotspot ( Like the Hellmouth ) & if they used an existing Supernatural character my vote would be for Bobby, reincarnated as an Angel.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Same here actually. I was disappointed after I finished Angel that Spike looked like such a ponce in "In the Dark". ( The makeup was slightly different his 1st episode of Angel )

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm guessing it will have something to do with the Men of Letters, since they're saying it is more "citified." I know a new character will anchor the show, but I'm hoping some fan-favorites will also crossover. If they could nab Felicia Day to play Charlie in the spinoff, I'd be there. Oh and Garth! ;)

Also, I totally agree, a Rufus & Bobby prequel would be epic. I still love those two so much--though secretly I'm still hoping for Bobby to come back and live happily ever after with Jody Mills--sigh, never going to happen. That's what fanfic is for.

I'm excited, I just hope the new series doesn't suck the life and creative energy out of the original.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Andrew Dabb is writing this episode, so I'd bet he'll be the showrunner.

Am I the only one who would like a spin off with the Winchester's tale in the early years?? :'( But since it's about another character it won't happen.I hope it's interesting.I'm definitely gonna check it out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Now that would be a fan petition I would actually get behind.

    ReplyDelete
  41. How exactly would one go about doing that because we could be the people who start it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's Supernatural Come On! Of Course It Will Get Picked Up.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So Exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think the best way to do it would be to get as many people as we can to send postcards to the Supernatural offices saying something like: Supernatural spin-off: Why get a new character when you've already got Grumpy Old Hunters. I'd definitely watch a Bobby and Rufus prequel. Petitions never actually work.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think it would be hard to do this while Supernatural is still on the air since they would have to share the set and neither show would be able to make any changes to it. It would be perfect after SPN goes off air though.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh, yes, yes, yes! That is a perfect idea.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This could be interesting, but I hope the story is serialized.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That sounds like fun. but my first question is...does this mean that the upcoming season is the last?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Personally, the bloom is off the Castiel and Crowley roses for me....but I would love even a TV Movie with Bobby and Rufus on a case. Would they be as crotchety as they were when we last saw them?

    ReplyDelete
  50. A potential spin-off doesn't mean the show is ending. Something disastrous needs to happen for SPN not to get a (final) S10.

    ReplyDelete
  51. good. I feel better. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Let's see if we can organize that and as I only live an hour from Lawrence, I could purchase postcards (if people would reimburse me. Postcard costs could add up quickly.)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Surprised it has taken this long for a spin off idea to be floated. Within the world of Supernatural there is more than enough room for two shows to co-exist.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Maggie Q for all the roles!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Spin-off? Generally, yes, especially with SPN likely ending after season 10. But bringing in a new character in one episode in the very likeley penultimate season?- No.

I don´t think that as a viewer you get enough time to grow warm with a character to follow him or her. It should better be someone the audience already knows. Cas or Charlie. That would be better than throwing someone completely new in the pool.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Maybe this is a trial balloon to see what fans will come up with.
Hearing it would be someone new does not interest me as much as some of
our past favorite characters, like Bobby, Rufus, Cas, Benny, Jody, Jo, Ellen, Meg, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Buffy went for 4 seasons after Angel spin off, NCIS is still going strong after their spin off. I don't see SPN ending until at least year 10 and if the guys want to keep going maybe longer. Unless Carver totally goes off the rails again, then I won't be around to see it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. that's why my original dream of a spinoff would've been many years after SPN, I was hoping for a futur Men of Letter generation with maybe older Kevin as their leader (and older Osric retaking the role). That was my idea earlier this year.

We never know, there's always a way around if that's the way they want to do :) they don't have to stay in the bunkers...maybe it could be a new 'gang' living somewhere else in term of places and not in time...maybe there's another place with a lot of knowledge....Idk, just throwing stuff here. Guessing it won't happen but it still would be fun

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have mixed feelings about this. MY OPINION is that Supernatural doesnt need a spin off, its already awesome the way it is. But I will have to wait and see how it works.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I wouldn't be worried but 9 seasons is, in TV years, very long in the tooth. But I hope you're right....on the quality count as well

    ReplyDelete
  61. Season 10 is pretty much assured. Season 11 is a strong maybe if they can get the contracts sorted out, especially if the spin-off is working and SPN's ratings stay even in bubble range. The CW would have to have a hit with every single new show and have their mediocre shows do remarkably better while at the same time, Supernatural would have to start make 0.5's in demo for there to be no season 10. To put this in the SPN verse, they'd have to throw a cursed coin in a restaurant wishing well to make that all come together, which of course would then end with the network itself getting cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Either Bobby/Rufus prequel OR Charlit/Kevin super genious hunting team....

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm weary.... not disinterested but cautious about getting hyped about it. The show is way passed it's prime where something like this would get me all on board. But it's still SPN so I know better than to think less of it. So at the moment sign me on as merely curious.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ooo! I like the possibility of Charlie/Kevin team up. That'd be fun to watch. I thought of another one too earlier: The Trickster Comedy Hour.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Seriously? Why? Focus on FIXING or ENDING the original first, please! While I am a fan of seasons 6 - 8 the show has lived past its prime.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm a Gabriel fan, so sure, I'd be up for something with him (barring he comes back of course)...

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm still curious how much "consulting" he's doing on SPN these days....
I wish he was a tad more involved.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Man it feels like 100 years since they show's referenced the Kansas angle of the Winchesters.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Dude, the Men of Letters bunker is in Kansas. It was literally in the second half of this season.

    ReplyDelete
  70. See, that's how well I paid attention to this season ...

    ReplyDelete
  71. That's alright, I had to double check. The Men of Letters were the best aspect of season eight though.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Agree 100%. Probably the only thing Carver added to the mythos that didn't piss me off.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm actually curious about this. Provided the backdoor pilot is interesting, the new character isn't of some faction I can't stand (*coughs*ANGELS*coughs*) and Carver isn't showrunning it. Oh, and they get a whole new set of writers, maybe one who worked on SPN. Other than that, a whole new pool of writing talent. Or just writing. Talent might be asking for too much ...

    episode 20 we haven't even seen episode 1! :)
I assume this new character is permanate for a while anyway, so is that a thumbs up for a season 10?
I am wondering about this character overtook Kevin's role, I'll just haveto see. By new, could this mean reintroduced?, maybe Bobby.
So those photos of Sam and Dean being outdoorsy is included?, kinda cool actually :)
