Seriously, Continuum has become the pinnacle of genre tv storytelling - every single episode is just so brilliant and all the parallels (like how Kiera for Julian was exactly what Garza for Alec was - down to erratic questionable methods and "have to kill you" scene, leading to a major change in Alec/Julian's lives) and symbolism is blowing my mind.
I will miss this show A LOT when it ends the season, and what's more I am 100% convinced it will end on a brilliantly executed cliffhanger.
I think Julian is the same and that Kiera doesn't fully grasp what exactly it was that Julian did in the future that she refers to as a "massacre." In the end, I think it will be Kiera who changes.
That is an interesting theory. I always wished they would explore the consequences of a world run by companies vs a world run by the government a bit more. If it is Kiera who changes, they would probably have to take some stance on this.
I think Bruces point is actually kinda obvious, we have seen Kira doubting herself more and more (regarding how the world should be run). My view on it is that the show will give us a middle path as the 'solution' (change through peaceful resolution, the one Julian is currently advocating)
Sorry I have to disagree, I think the acting is overall good, except for Kira's (those stares aren't helping). The premise is good but the pace of the show (in terms of mythology) is very slow. They only gives us little by little background on characters that show up and that doesn't have to be a problem except with this show it always leaves me disappointed for more (as opposed to yearning for more - sorry for that vague explanation ;)).
There have been good episodes, but not so much that the show stands out to me as a whole. Any parallels and/or subtext from this show are usually lost on me when an ep isn't gripping enough to hold my attention.
I don't think that they have really shown Kiera doubting how the world should be run. They have shown her debating if she should allow certain events to happen (like the massacre), but not really the corporations ruling the world or how power should be divided up. The idea that Kiera would believe that Julian should kill all of those controlled humans is fairly opposed to the belief system that she holds now. If the show does allow the future to change, a middle path might be invoked. (I agree this is the most probable outcome) But on the other hand, we haven't been given any evidence that the future can change. To some extent, given future Alec's knowledge and planning, we have been given evidence that the future cannot change. If the future can be controlled, I think that the Freelancers might provide that evidence in this season or the next one.
Hmm, not me. Pacing seems almost perfect. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single Sci-Fi show in the last ~3 years that had a faster "mythology pace" - it's not too fast or too slow, imo, and does a brilliant job teasing or creating intrigue. Still can't believe more USA Sci-Fi fans haven't caught on to the awesomeness of the show yet...
There is Julian who becomes Kagame and Kagame killed those ppl, but the current Julian wouldn't kill those ppl. Part of the reason why Alec send Kagame and Kira back is probably to change both the futures of Alec and Julian. You are right about the goverment/corporations part, but I wasn't talking about that.
Short recap - Where we started: Kira is send with liber8 back to our time, she needs to catch them to go back to be with her son. She gets help from Alec who is (sort of) her bos in 2077.
What have we learned 20 episodes later: Alec brother Julian is Kagame. Carlos knows Kira's secret. There are more time travelers.
I don't consider this a very good pace, this way we will finally learn 2 seasons later if they are actually making a difference. There are tons of shows who keep me more gripped to the tv with a much better pacing then continuum, for example: Scandal and Person of Interest (not sure if SyFy). When talking about SyFy: Orphan Black, Beaty and the Beast, Falling Skies (despite its actors), Game of Thrones, Hemlock Grove, In The Flesh, .Battlestar Galactica.
And you DO realize that you just grossly oversimplified the whole show ignoring about 3/4ths of all plotlines and themes presently.
THe brilliant thing about this show is that no screentime is wasted, everything and anything that ever happens builds up to something surprising and fresh.
Its funny you mention BSG, because for me, there has been no scifi show as thrilling as BSG till Continuum, and Continuum is starting to top it.
I thought they are already doing great job at that:
- Kierra's flashback are way too clean and unsettling in 1948 kind of way. - Every single Liber8 flashback humanizes them and showcases the future's nature. - The latest flashback to the factory workers had VERY effective narrative dissonance between what Kierra says and what we see happen. -
You just mentioned Falling Skies. Its a really bad show. Contiuum to me is the best SyFi show to come in a very long time. Its better then the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Quite a while for a show to take the risks and bring about detailed plot development that Continuum does. This show isn't for everyone, its very dense and layered. Most people would rather watch a show that is procedural in nature so all the plots develop quickly and then your done. Continuum allows the story to develop and characters to grow and unlike Lost, does give the viewers a payoff by revealing the story as they move forward. I really like the pacing and the way they handle the Mythos for this show.
- can you tell me which (important) storylines I missed?
- True, very little nonsense per episode, but overall in the grand scheme of things there is usually little to none progress.
- I only mentioned Falling Skies cause, yes, it has horrible acting and I don't like most of the decisions they make, but they story does progress every ep. Whether it is progress as a group bond, their fight or survival, after every ep you can say you have learned something new. So only in that regard I mentioned FS.
- @Forgedias, our view on the characters changes/develops yes, but cause of little reveals from Flashbacks (/Flashforwards from the future that already happened?) and not of their actions in the current time. Please tell me how Alec or Carlos have changed in a major way from the pilot. Alec learns his future identity in the pilot and needs to decide how he is going to shape his future, but uptil now he hasn't made any big changes or decisions that would impact his future (at least that has been revealed to us). Carlos is still the good cop from the pilot, but he does know Cara's and liber8's secrets now. Please tell me what I am missing.
hmm, don't know why I thought that, from wiki: " Richard Harmon as Julian Randol, Alec's step-brother in 2012. Later in his life, he is known as Theseus, and is the founder of Liber8 and the mentor to Edouard Kagame."
Must have crossed some wires, maybe need to rewatch some flashbacks for that. :D
Julian is not... IS NOT KAGAME! We got to see future Julian and he is not Kagame. I have respect for posters like Dahne who ACTUALLY watch a show, know the details, but when you can't get a MAJOR element like that right... Dude!?!? Are you even watching or just... surfing by or trolling us?
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I was hoping for a bit more Garza in this episode but overall it was still pretty good.
ReplyDeleteHOW IS THIS SHOW EVEN REAL.

So, does anyone think that Julian has changed? Or that it is possible to change the future?
