Sources close to production tell us, “Glee is definitely not canceled. If you look at the dollars and cents of the show and that it was very much an ensemble with new kids being added last year when some graduated. It’s clear that the show wasn’t about one character."
Our source says producers are taking their cue from shows like "8 Simple Rules" and "The West Wing," which have also suffered real-life deaths ... the lesson being: one character doesn't make or break a show.
Our source adds, "The producers and writers are taking time to meet and figure out how to best address this situation in the context of Glee. No decision has been reached about a script yet, as it’s still early."

8 simple rules was never the same without John Ritter :(
ReplyDeleteThey gotta do what they gotta do. No, it won't be the same, but what are the options? FOX won't let them cancel the show at this point, the only thing left to do is rewrite everything.
ReplyDeleteNot to speak ill of the dead but Cory was NO John Ritter. Glee will be different but it can still go on. Finn/Cory was not the show.
ReplyDelete8 Simple Rules was a totally different situation. John Ritter WAS that show. Finn/Cory, while a major player was not the "main" character. Personally, I think it would be best to cancel the show, but the show can and will go on without Cory/Finn. I'm curious to see what they do.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Cory wasn't the main character but he was a very major character of the show. Finn was the one who helped band Glee Club and without him, I don't think Glee Club would have gotten more than those five original members. Also, with Cory's sudden death, Lea's going to struggle with continuing the show as a regular, especially given the circumstances with her on and off screen relationship with Cory. And Lea, to many, is the core of the show. They have managed to get on with very little Cory for season 4 but with his death and with Lea's more than likely reduced screen time, it's going to be difficult to keep ratings afloat.
ReplyDeleteWe will just have to see how the writers handle this delicate situation and proceed with a new plan for season 5 and beyond.
ReplyDelete" the lesson being: one character doesn't make or break a show."
ReplyDeleteActually in some case that is exactly the case. It doesn't apply for Glee so they're fortunate in that regard but this right here, is not at all a rule.
Well, they deffo need to push production way, way back. They need to release Lea from her contract as quickly as possible if she so wishes and wrap her story line up. I, personally believe the show is done, it was in season 3. It is a very tough situation but they need to be very careful with Lea and the cast/crew and release people who which to leave.
ReplyDeleteI think it all comes down to if Lea is going to continue. they can write out Finn (they can say he gone back to the military for most the season and then address the situation later on in the year) but they have made Rachel the main character in a way by following her to NYC. I can't see how they can carry on without her. (I would have carried on watching if they had left high school behind and just followed NYC or done a spin off)
ReplyDeleteI think Lea will be free to leave whenever she wants.
ReplyDeleteAnd about the show being done with, it doesn't really matter for FOX (and they are the ones with the money). But I do believe they'll either have to switch the focus completely (aka give up the NYC arc) or finish the story this season.
This is going to be really difficult for the writers to work around, as there is no easy solution - it's not really believable that Finn would leave and never see Rachel again, while Glee isn't the kind of show that kills off regular characters. Then again, neither was 8 Simple Rules and I thought the way they incorporated John Ritter's death was beautiful and touching (although it probably should have ended there) - perhaps they could try and pull off a similar, touching goodbye to Finn?
ReplyDelete"they can say he gone back to the military" That wouldn't make any sense whatsoever, IMO.
ReplyDeleteI hope they pay tribute to his character in some way. Cory left to soon and poor Lea. I can't imagine what the show will be like for her.
ReplyDeleteI think they should kill him on the series and make a remembering episode or something just to do some closure with the fans and with themselves
