UPDATE: Andrew Kreisberg has confirmed that Caity Lotz has been cast but not for the role of Black Canary. Read details here.
Thanks to Doug for the heads up.
"The Pact" star Caity Lotz is set to play the Black Canary on The CW's "Arrow," TheWrap has learned.
While the Black Canary will start out as a recurring role, Lotz is expected to eventually become a series regular, as her character will be groomed as a love interest for Arrow (Stephen Amell). .
The Black Canary is a notable character in the DC Comics franchise, and both The CW and the producers of "Arrow" are high on its potential.
Created by the writer-artist team of Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, the Black Canary is the alter-ego of Dinah Drake.

wait what
ReplyDeleteHuh....interesting choice. That's all I have to say about it really. I only just googled her and none of her previous work is stuff I like to watch. I'll give her a fair shot.
ReplyDeleteI'm just confused by this but it should be interesting to say the least...maybe she will have more chemistry with Stephen Amell's Oliver?
ReplyDeleteI've said it since the beginning that Katie/Laurel is the weak link in the show, and judging by the reaction to the character online many agreed with me. Looks like the producers either took in the negative feedback and decided to cast another to be Black Canary instead of inviting more complaints, or perhaps they noticed for themselves that Katie Cassidy is subpar on this show and would be awful as BC.
ReplyDeleteUh oh. There's going to be fans upset with this news. I'm just excited to get another kick butt female character. As long as she can act, I don't particularly care who it is.
ReplyDeleteI though Dinah Drake was det Lance's wife.
ReplyDeleteKatie's acting isn't so much the question for me but the character was poorly written so I agree it was the weakest link. Now that we know she isn't Black Canary, they can completely reboot her character or kill her off. Either works for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know her either but I must admit that NTSF:SD:SUV made me laugh from the title alone. Maybe she'll be a breakout hit.
ReplyDeleteI found her acting in scenes with Tommy good, but her other scenes not so much.
ReplyDeleteI hate to be a fanboy but no, I really don't like this.
ReplyDeleteThis is bullshit.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Colin Donnell's acting made most of the scenes he was in. I found Laurel, Oliver, and Malcolm to be better when they were in scenes with Tommy than without him. For me, Arrow lost a lot with Tommy's death.
ReplyDeleteSo many fans are going to be pissed. Oh boy! I personally do not see Katie Cassidy as Black Canary so I'm not upset at this news. (I don't hate the girl I just don't like her character at all.)
ReplyDeleteDafuq? Arrow does like to throw us curveballs. Damn. Then again, The Wrap is notorious for getting things wrong so I'll reserve any further judgement until I see confirmation from some other sources.
ReplyDeleteTell you what. If there isn't some sort of statement about this from the producers before Saturday, the Arrow panel (with Katie Cassidy in attendance) is going to be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteDinah Drake is technically the first Black Canary. Look it up
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of surprised at the timing of this announcement to be honest. This is huge news and generally they do that AT SDCC, not before. You are right. It is definitely going to come up during the panel which might actually make it one of the more interesting ones to YouTube.
ReplyDeleteMultiple places are reporting it.
ReplyDeleteI can't find confirmation anywhere. Anyone talking about it has The Wrap as their source. The actress' social media sites have nothing on it either. Guess we'll have to wait for it to be addressed at Comic-Con.
ReplyDeleteHave you found places that are not crediting The Wrap as the source because everywhere I have been, that's where they have gotten their news.
ReplyDeleteMultiple places are reporting that "The Wrap" is reporting it. That's not confirmation. That's just piggybacking someone else's story.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised at the timing as well which adds to my skepticism toward the contents of this story, especially when it's coming from The Wrap.
ReplyDeleteGot to admit that if it's a hoax, they timed it well. Nothing like getting fans in a frenzy right before the Comic-Con panel. Of course, that means that who Black Canary will be can't be avoided and the producers may not want to have that conversation yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm not prepared to go so far as to say it's a hoax but it wouldn't surprise me at all if The Wrap got some of their facts wrong.
ReplyDeleteI hope this won't be another "here's real Jimmy Olsen" situation.
ReplyDeleteHuh? This is odd. I know that Dinah Drake was the first BC in the comics, before her daughter took over, but a completely random character? I'm going to wait on confirmation for this one.
ReplyDeleteWell, that just makes Laurel redundant.
ReplyDeleteshe is 26 but looks 36+? i will have to see her for in something to get a better understanding. but really wtf just someone new? when they already have 3 potential Candidates on the show already, 2 of which carry the real name of BC.
ReplyDeleteWait a minute, what, what, WHAT???
ReplyDeleteI like this move, I never saw Laurel becoming the BC because it required such a fundemental shift in her character. Perhaps they will write her out of the show now at the end of the season? Oliver losing both his oldest and best friends, pushing him to become the GA for life?
ReplyDeleteOther scenario I could see Laurel and miss Cassidy's character as best friends before she dies and Laurel takes over as BC.
Both could work I think, but things rarely go as expected with this show (and that's a good thing). :)
Most likely the ORIGINAL Black Cannary - They might not be able to get Alex for longer stay on the show so they added new character for that
ReplyDeleteIf not then this show just became a freaking trainwreck.
Still doubt this news are real, though.
Yeah I really doubt its legit.
ReplyDeleteNo. Laurel needs to become a badass. Don't do this to me Arrow.
ReplyDeleteanother lady love of Oliver? I thought Laurel will be the Black Canary.
ReplyDeleteThis.
ReplyDeletegods this sounds like show is jumping the shark. WHYYYY.
i can't stand laurel...but isn't she the future black canary??
ReplyDeleteI don't believe this rumor either. I've never heard about anything else TV related reported exlusively to the Wrap first in any TV show I watch, and I don't remember Guggenheim or Berlanti or Kreisberg ever interviewing to the Wrap and giving them exclusive spoilers either.
ReplyDeleteHasn't she always been...? Now how will she be pointless?
ReplyDeleteTrue, and I don't see anything about such casting in Deadline, TVLine, TVGuide, etc.
ReplyDeleteSo that's... confusing. Kinda makes Laurel even less important now, right?
ReplyDeleteIf this rumor is true, which is right now doubtful.
ReplyDeleteI saw this yesterday and it's SO lol worthy.
ReplyDeleteNAHHHHHH i dont who this girl is but ill give a try, i though as everyone else that they were gonna use katie as black canary but i think we were wrong¿? i still think her character needs a better development than before sometimes she was so boring to watch.... in the otehr hand want oliver and felicity together e.e
ReplyDeleteBingo, she is beyond terrible as an actress, its funny how her sympathisers try to blame it on the writing. If this is true, then season 2 just got a whole loads better. Getting rid of Katie cassidy and her annoying fans, now thats a win.
ReplyDeletethey thought this show wasnt good enough for their "best actress", what are you complaining for now, you have said it all season she could do better. I'm I missing something here.
I seriously hope The Wrap has no idea of the differences between who Dinah Drake and Dinah "Laurel" Lance are. Hopefully this broad will only appear in flashbacks as Laurel's mother, because otherwise we have the Jimmy Olsen 2.0 version from Smallville, and I don't want or care about that crap. This is exactly the bs that happens when you let shippers decide the fate of a show. So many times these dam types of fandoms have ruined great shows.
ReplyDeleteHopefully that means she is a flashback of Laurel's mother.
ReplyDeletePutting two black canaries in same timeframe dillutes the badassery.
Zap2it just posted an article about this. They tried to confirm it, even contacting The CW in an attempt to do so, but no one got back to them. So, as of now, it's still unconfirmed as far as I know.

ReplyDeleteShe WAS cast in Arrow, but she IS NOT PLAYING BLACK CANARY OR DINAH DRAKE.
And thankfully its just The Wrap being the Wrap.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.tvguide.com/News/Exclusive-Arrow-Boss-1068064.aspx
Not Black Canary. Not Dinah Drake. But was cast in Arrow.
Yeah, I just posted about it in the new article. Thanks for the heads-up anyway.
ReplyDeleteReally?
ReplyDeleteI was hoping Laurel/Katie, would take on the role...
I think the Wrap probably got the info from her agent or someone related to her but not from Arrow crew, hence the confusion.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm thinking that Black Canary will be a legacy character, and that this first canary will pass it on to Laurel, like Dinah's mother did in the comics.
ReplyDeleteIt would be an interesting twist, seeing that we already had 2 origin stories.
From what I've read, it sounds like she may be the early Black Canary, and then Laurel becomes the Black Canary a couple of years down the line. (Yeah, I was hoping the Laurel thing was going to be over too.)
