  2. Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch are both great and play him very differently but believable to me.

  3. Jeremy Brett, but also Jonny Lee Miller and Cumberbatch are great to me!

  4. How could you forget, Nicholas Rowe? He was a fantastic Sherlock Holmes. Hmmm, he'd also make a great Doctor Who!

  5. No one from the list. So other - Васи́лий Бори́сович Лива́нов ( Vasily Borisovich Livanov) from soviet television series: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

  6. The PBS series with Jeremy Brett was closest to the Conan Doyle concept. But hey--I didn't know Matt Frewer was once Sherlock! Gotta see Max Headroom as Sherlock Holmes

  7. My favourite is undoubtedly Benedict Cumberbatch, but how is Robert Stephens not on this list? The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant movie!

  8. My poll :)) there are like 1000 Sherlocks, I couldn't remember all! If I had to choose, it would be Benedict Cumberbatch, but all actors play a different face of Holmes, which is fantastic.

The "Cumberbatch" is as close to Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock as you can get, with Jeremy Brett a close second. RDJ is incredibly entertaining but he plays himself as usual and not Sherlock.

  11. I personally think that Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett are the best ones :)

  12. From the classic Sherlock Holmes portrayals, Basil Rathbone. He was THE Sherlock for me for a long time. Although I also really liked Ronald Howard in the role, but he wasn't on the list.
From the modern ones, Johnny Lee Miller. His quirky way of portraying Holmes' genius is simply brilliant. I'm a big fan of Robert Downey Jr. and enjoy his movies no end, but his Sherlock is just too far from the original to make him the 'best' on my list.

  13. The best Sherlock Holmes is Vasily Livanov. Even the Queen thinks so. He got the Order of the British Empire for playing that role. Considering the fact that he's actually soviet and russian actor.

  14. I think the Watson from that series is the most fitting I have ever seen, but I'm not so keen on its Sherlock I have to say.

  15. Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Downey Jr.

  17. I don't think the younger people would know of too many of the earlier Sherlocks. I prefer Basil Rathbone myself. I find a lot of the remakes are too trendy which takes away the feel of the originality of the shows.

  18. Voted for Brett too. For me he will Always be Sherlock Holmes. I also agree that Miller and Cumberbatch are very good to.

I love Downey Jr., but he should stick to playing Ironman.

  19. Yes, you are soo right. He was the Sherlock Holmes I believe Conan Doyle would have approved of.

  20. I agree. I myself have never watched a Rathbone Sherlock, yet still think that the (later) Brett Sherlock was very good and near the Doyle Holmes.

  21. Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr., in my opinion, are the best ones.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Totally agree with you, even about Downey Jr.

  23. There are a lot of good actors that have made equally good Sherlock Holmes, but Benedict Cumberbatch is THE best one in my opinion.

  24. Whitehead....when I think of canon Sherlock, I always get his face. Sadly he didn't star in a good adaptation.

  25. Here's Jonny! I mean, I vote for Jonny!

Василий Ливанов- Vasiliy Livanov. Queen Elizabeth in his time called Vasiliy Livanov most significant embodiment of the image of Sherlock Holmes on the screen. And I'm with her, as well as many of the audience in the USSR and in other countries where these films have been translated completely agree!

  27. Vasily Livanov & Vitaly Solomin are the best Holmes & Watson!

  28. Jeremy Brett is the best on screen Holmes. As far as the best Holmes in ANY medium. CLIVE MERRISON of the brilliant BBC Radio dramas. His portayal is lively and eccentric, in accordance with modern tastes. Also, he is the only actor to play Holmes in a dramatization of every story in the Conan Doyle canon. Seriously.. give these a listen!
