*nods* and sometimes they totally do! Hype over a "special" can be terrible for the episode. It can set really unrealistic expectations. So then it does totally depend on the show and the episode.
(for example the 150th episode of Charmed featured Julian and you thought it was gonna be great 'cause Julian was back aaaaaand, BOY was that a let down... but then you have You're Welcome, Angel's 100, and that was pure perfection.... it killed me but it was perfect! And I'm mentioning those two because I think - even though Angel was superior show in every way- they are fairly comparable episodes, each in their league)
More recently for me, Arrow's season finale got a lot of hype and we were promised so much that I was actually determined not to get my expectations up for fear that the finale would be ruined for me. Then it went ahead and blew me away. It was all the hype and more. However when they hyped up the black and white Castle episode the year before I was really excited. The episode certainly wasn't bad but it was at best another Castle episode just in black and white, nothing special. I think for me part of the job with special episodes is to not believe the hype and therefore let the episode stand on its on without the "special episode" hoopla.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Other: All of the above! Oh, and I also like musical episodes. Those are awesome. :P
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The problem with special episodes is they get all hyped up and many times cannot live up to that hype.
