  1. Not at all what I pictured. The actor should be older, Oberyn Martell is supposed to be about jamie and cercis age. The dark hair is right but he should look more foreign and tanned.

  2. Mmmm interesting... It's not how I imagined Oberyn, but I'm sure the actor will do an amazing work.

  3. Nope. Nope. Really disappointed in this, the Martells should be darker skinned, I was looking forward to them joining the series so it would be more diverse. Do not like this at all.

  4. He is a shade lighter than I would call "olive skinned", agreed.

Although I pictured the Dornish as Spanish or Northern African, Berber. So "color" wise he is not far off in my mind.

I have no issue with his lightness though. My first thought was he is not lean and serpent-like enough, but even that is not a major concern!

Oberyn was 42 in the books and with how the show ages up roles I expected the casting choice to be older honestly. Although he is noted as looking younger... so who knows! XD

  5. I'll take someone who is well suited to the role over someone with slightly darker skin any day of the week.

  6. I think once in costume he will, but I agree on the age. He feels too young to me.

  7. As long as he portrays him and owns Oberyn, we can excuse that he doesn't has the exact looks like GRRM described the Red Viper in ASOS.

Dany on the show looks a bit different as well, so the looks shouldn't be the main thing to decide who to cast.

...although I wouldn't have been sad if Ba'al...meant Clive Simon had gotten it instead. ;)

  8. Simon was one of my early favs too! XD

I wonder how old Pascal is, I did not find his age anywhere... Maybe he just has good genes and is actually in his 40's?

    ReplyDelete
  9. interesting that Google doesn't have his age on page one of the search results. Yeah, he could be between 35 - 40 looking at the picture

  10. I’m having a blast reading all the “he’s too white” comments.

  11. Ha! XD

I do have one somewhat "ethnic" consideration about the casting now that I think about it...

I have never heard Pascal speak with a British accent!

Are they casting the Dornish as American/ Central or South Americans and with a more American English accent?

So many American (not sure about Chilean) actors trying to do British accents sound so bad... I guess that is my only real concern.

  12. I dont feel we got too much input in the books that Oberyn was dark skinned. I remember he got a bunch of mentions because he had a dark hair and was beautiful. I dont consider Pascal as ugly. I dont feel the skin colour is an important thing to the character.

  13. When reading the books I always pictured Oded Fehr as Oberyn, and I hoped he'd play him on screen, but I'll keep and open mind, and hope that he does a good job of bringing the Red Viper to life.

  14. They say he has olive skin and dark hair. They also say there are three types of dornish, all the martell family we meet are described as type 3.

    1. really dark ones with brown skin and dark hair from the desert

2.pale ones with light hair that live in the caves
    3. olive skin and black hair (Martell family)

The Martell look as Latin peolpe or people from middle-este. Pedro is latin, he is NOT white or anglo at all. I think he will be perfect as Oberyn. Just let him act. He will be transformed by the producers.

Right... for us, Latin People, is difficult the british accent. But I'm not sure if dornish people have different accent comparish to the rest of Westeros....
Beside, Pedro looks latin, he is not white. He will be perfect for Oberyn.

  17. I don't know if I have even heard him speak with a "Spanish" accent... I watch Graceland where he plays Make's handler and he has no accent other than when he introduced himself saying, "You can call me Jaun."

I don't recall the role he played on any other show I have seen him other than Buffy where he played dead Eddie. No accent there either. I'm guessing he had an accent in Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe where he played Colombian Commandante Veracruz. I just cannot recall any of his scenes.

I like his look for the role (other than maybe his age) an think he will do fine. In Nina Gold I trust!

I'm just curious as to how they 'create' Dorne...
What accent will the Dornish have? Will they keep the Martells all Latin actors or will they go Latin and Mediterranean, or maybe even add in some North African/ Middle-Eastern? How many Sand Snakes make the show (if any) and will they keep them all having different mothers and appearances?

Personally I think they have a lot of options and I'm intrigued!

  18. Ah dammit! I had to look him up for his name didn't ring a bell.I started reading about him in wiki when i read what happens when he goes to kings landing and what happens with Tryion....i'm so mad!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oooops!

Sounds like you just spoilered the big surprises of Season 4....
    Bummer!

Hmmm, not sure why you looked up the new role being cast that as a new role should be unfamiliar to you as a non-reader though... Yeah wiki is not non-reader friendly. Spoilers abound!

One good thing though, now you have no excuse to not read the books since you already spoilered yourself! XD

  20. All because i wanted to see what he looked like and what color his skin was. See what i get! I read everyone's comments about his skin color so i goggled him. Then i saw wiki and it had a very small paragraph about him,but the way they made it sound it was like he was already in the show....I don't know it somehow confused me and i wound up reading it..Oh,i'm so disappointed yet excited for S4.

Yep,now i can hit the books!

  21. He should have been in season 3 but the show's timeline is altered from the books. In the books oberyn gets to kings landing before jamie gets home. Also mace tyrell should have come with margery and loras tyrell and been in all of season 3.

  22. Most of people in latin america have a grade of european ancestry, our skin tones have a very wide range. And Pedro Pascal is on the very white side of the scale.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So one one hand I'm glad they went latin, but in the other hand, they picked the whitest hispanic man they could.

Are they going to tan him?

But, that opens the way for other dornsihmen to be portrayed by latin actors, and that was my wish all along.

Now cast America Ferrera and Ariane Martell and I'll die happy.

  24. I think he looks as confident as Jaime before he lost the hand. It sure would be interesting to see them interact together next season.

I can't wait to see what The Red Viper has to say about Brienne too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's why I never read the fan casting suggesting: the casting department of this show has been flawless to me since the Stark kids and Jaqen H'ghar.

    ReplyDelete
  26. He got a bunch of mentions because he was seductive and lustful. It's why Jaime said he valued innocence (more than experience) in a woman.

As long as the Red Viper can seduce anything that moves on the show, its going to be the same character.

  27. I pictured someone with eyes that appear to be always thinking, the male Margaery if you will.

This actor is my kind of Oberyn. I approve.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I re-watched him in Graceland and I have less conerns than I did when the news first broke!

He is fairly thin despite some of the photos I've seen making him look solid and he looks older than many of the photos I saw too.

    I agree about his eyes...
I think he has a very good look honestly. I do wonder if they will put a long wig on him or not...

  29. The show has done really well with its casting so far I think I'll trust them....

Diversity ain't all it's cracked up to be.

  31. It's funny...
I think many of us were waiting to see how they cast Oberyn and thinking it would determine how they cast the rest of the Martells and Sand Snakes, but then they pull off the shocking casting of someone from the Americas! XD

Now I wonder if they will cast all Latin Americans or will they mix and match ethnicity as long as the features of each actor compliment one another? I've always felt they can cast a number of ethnicities as Martells and it will work. So I'm just not sure if this is a sign of more Latino actors to come or just a sign that the Martells are not overly dark as some people thought.

America Ferrera, she would be interesting as Arianne Martell. I have not really thought of any Mediterranean or Latina actresses for the role honestly.
I need to think about this now! XD

Maybe Tony Plana or Edward James Olmos as Doran Martell?

Ana de la Reguera or Patricia Velasquez as Ellaria Sand?
    (If she is cast)

I know exactly what did you say, because i'm panamanian.... but i was not talking just about his skin color... just look at his eyes and facial structure. He does not look nordic. He looks more like Antonio Banderas.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He has a nice look for Oberyn although I pictured the Red Viper more serpent-like... and older.

I have little issue with the skin color honestly as I never thought the Martells were that dark skinned in the first place. Olive skinned can be such a wide range.

I prefer the earlier rumor that Cosimo Fusco was offered the role honestly, but I am excited for the role to be cast!
