Scene Of The Week - May 5, 2013 - *POLL*

5 May 2013

Week 22. As always, we’re trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great scenes that we’ve seen last week.
Choosing just 3 scenes this time seemed impossible, so I’m certain we’re missing a lot of great ones, but my picks this week are (in the alphabetical order):

1. Show: CASTLE
Episode: “Still”
Date: April 29, 2013
Actor: Stana Katic
The Scene: Flashback – “We speak for the dead”

This was such a beautiful episode, I loved it! Definitely exceeded my expectations. So many great scenes to choose from. And I’m guessing most of the fans is gonna pick the “I love you” part, but as sweet as it was, I liked the scene right after it much, much more!
The moment when Kate comes to terms with the fact that she’s dying, we can see her entire life’s story. The most important parts. She remembers Cpt. Montgomery's speech about the dead (probably my favorite one in the entire show!). She thinks about her struggle, her constant efforts to find her mother’s killer, all the death and pain in her life, her loneliness and never feeling safe. And then she remembers the last time when she was very close to death and the person she was thinking about back then: Castle. At this point all the good memories of her time with him, the one she loves the most, mix with the sense of dying, the feeling of fading away. And these happy moments make her stronger, let her accept that she’s almost gone. And that’s where the scene ends. I love flashbacks like this one! So beautiful! Kudos to not only amazing Stana Katic but also people responsible for editing these clips and the composer of the gorgeous melody that we can hear in the scene. It makes this moment perfect.

NOTE: The scene was also picked by Jimmy Ryan as Scene Of The Week!

“I could say that my favorite scene was Kate finally telling Castle that she loves him, but I'm not. I'm picking the flashback with Montgomery talking while Kate stands by her mothers' grave. Put all the flashbacks together, and not only do you get one amazing video, you get a comprehensive, emotional, but most importantly, positive view on the series as a whole. Bravo, Castle team. An excellent episode all round.”

2. Show: PERSON OF INTEREST
Episode: “Zero Day”
Date: May 2, 2013
Actors: Michael Emerson, Amy Acker
The Scene: Finch and Root talk about the Machine

It was absolutely incredible episode, breathtaking and easily one of the best of the entire series. Simple proof can be the fact that pretty much every scene from the episode can be called “Scene of the Week”, even the opening one. Who would have thought the sequence (or maybe lack of it) at the beginning of the episode could be so great? But yes, it definitely was.
The moment I’ve chosen as my favorite is the discussion between Root and Finch about the “humanity” of the Machine and its lost memories. First of all, one of the things I love the most about the show is this connection between Harold and his creation. Here, he tells Root just how deep it was, how the Machine actually started to look after him, altering its own code to protect him, starting to act more like human. And what he had to do to stop it, to make the Machine focus on its main goal, which is saving innocent people from the acts of terrorism, for the greater good. And in order to do that, he took away its memories, forcing them Machine to be reborn every single day. What’s truly amazing in the scene is Root’s reaction to Harold’s story. You don’t expect to see someone like her to be so heartbroken about it, to actually stand up for the Machine and decide to fight for it. Absolutely remarkable job by Michael Emerson and Amy Acker here, kudos to these two wonderful actors!

NOTE: The scene was also picked by Darth Locke as Scene Of The Week!

“Root converses with Harold, as she further humanizes "Ernest Thornhill" (the machine) by forcing Harold to acknowledge that he kill's Ernest's "memories" (codes) every night at midnight and this is what has crippled "him". This episode of POI was awesome through and through, as not only Amy Acker's performance in this scene is one of the best of her career, and challenging viewers on thoughts pertaining to creating life and ethics, but also because the episode completely references and gave modern-technology take on Alfred Hitchcock's classic, "North By Northwest"!”

3. Show: THE AMERICANS
Episode: “The Colonel”
Date: May 1, 2013
Actors: Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell, Noah Emmerich
The Scene: Philip saves Elizabeth

I’ve already written my review of the episode, so if you read it, you know how much I enjoyed watching this season finale, especially the last 15 minutes, it’s so thrilling and absolutely engaging!
My favorite part starts when Philip and Claudia realize that Elizabeth is in danger and he immediately runs to help her. The entire sequence where he tries to get to her on time and the FBI quietly waits to confirm that Elizabeth is the one they’re looking for is brilliantly done. And then Philip arrives and saves his wife from being arrested, and the car chase begins. He’s a really great driver, by the way! I rewatched this scene at least a couple of times and it still keeps me in suspense. Especially knowing that Stan manages to shoot Elizabeth after she gets in the car. Didn’t see this one coming! Can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen in season 2, really glad that in the end the main couple gets back together (“Come home”). I missed them together, they’re much stronger when they work side by side.

NOTE: The scene was also picked by Sharon Seymour as Scene Of The Week!

Honorable mentions:
Arrow, “The Undertaking”, May 1, 2013 – Malcolm’s story about his wife’s death
Elementary, “A Landmark Story”, May 2, 2013 - “The thing that’s different about me…is you”

NOTE: The scene was also picked by Darth Locke as Scene Of The Week!

Doctor Who, “The Crimson Horror”, May 4, 2013, Actors: Diana Rigg, Rachael Stirling

Supernatural, “The Great Escapist”, May 1, 2013, Actors: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki
The Scene:
Dean tries to take care of Sam after the trials take a toll on him. This episode was literally almost everything I've ever loved in sick!Sam fic and Dean being that overprotective big brother was just amazing.

NOTE: The scene was also picked by Sylvie C as Scene Of The Week!

“Dean taking care of sick Sam - The Brothers relationship is the most emotional part of this show and the thing I like the most.”

5. FROM JAMIE COUDEVILLE

Castle, “Still”, April 29, 2013, Actors: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic

Kenzi and Deeks in the hotel room and the awkward moment when Nell entered the room: those faces were priceless.

Hawaii Five 0, “Imi Loko Ka ’Uhane (Seek Within One’s Soul)”, April 29, 2013, Actors: Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Aisha Tyler
The Scene:
The scene where Savannah asks why Steve drives Danny's car. Since it wasn't a traditional episode, I wasn't expecting a cargument scene, or anything like that. So this was really brilliant to have. And I've always loved the 'car driving, control freak argument'.

Arrow, “The Undertaking”, May 1, 2013, Actors: Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy
The Scene:
The scene near the end where Oliver implied to Laurel that he still loved her. I absolutely loved her reaction. Awesome acting.

Nikita, “High-Value Target”, May 3, 2013, Actor: Noah Bean
The Scene:
The scene where Ryan was holding the trigger to the bomb. When he was explaining about how his file said he was just a "low-level analyst", that was brilliant. I loved it.

11. FROM JIMMY RYAN

Person Of Interest, “Zero Day”, May 2, 2013, Actors: Michael Emerson, Brett Cullen
The Scene:
The entire episode of Person of Interest was just stunning this week. Picking one scene is an arduous task, but I'm going to pick the 2010 flashback scene between Finch and Ingram, after Finch follows Ingram to what is now the library where he and Reese run everything from. Ingram talks about the "irrelevant list" and how he couldn't help but do something for them. Back then, The Machine sent the full bio of a person to Ingram, but now, it sends only a social security number to Finch. This only brings up more questions about what really happened back then, and how Finch got his spinal injury. Shortly after Finch terminates the process Ingram created, Ingram's number appears before the screen goes blank. An excellent scene for an excellent episode. I can't wait for the finale this Thursday!

Scandal, “A Woman Scorned”, May 2, 2013
The Scene:
My final Scene Of The Week goes to ABC's best drama, in the form of Scandal. Again there were many scenes I was torn between for Thursday's episode. But the scene I picked in the end was Fitz turning up on Olivia's doorstep in the evening, and waiting around 20 minutes for his wife Mellie to go on air explaining the marriage problems. I loved this scene because it shows the literally unending love Fitz has for Olivia, and that no matter how much she pushes him away, he will not give up. The reaction by Cyrus to the revelation that his husband was the one interviewing the First Lady also added to this scene immensely.

  1. Nashville: either Rayna's declaration of love "Cusack style" for Deacon or their scene that followed...bahah. HOT.

  2. Honourable mentions from me go to NCIS L.A. where Kensi and Deeks are having the play fight; NCIS where Ziva kills Bodnar; and Elementary where Sherlock and Watson break-in to do an autopsy.

    ReplyDelete
  3. My honorable mentions: Rayna tells Deacon she loves him and they have sex on Nashville,, Andy sings on The Office, Angela's breakdown in the car with Oscar, and there's probably more I'm missing.

Now that we're in May sweeps and close to season finale time, it's really hard to narrow the choices down!

Why are we only able to choose 3?? I had like 10 favorites!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Nikita: Ryan's speech while holding the bomb. Pure awesomeness. He just proved everybody wrong (or those who theorized) about him turning into Percy 2.0. And the Mikita "shower scene." I really love that it didn't seem forced. Kudos to the amazing writers.

And Hannibal: the final minutes of Hannibal killing Miriam. So obsessed with this show!

  6. My original list of favorites had at least a dozen scenes (like Bones' proposal, Arya's scene on GOT, "Lisbon's my partner" from The Mentalist, etc.), so trust me, I know how hard it is to choose;)

And I have a feeling it's only got get harder at this point. The finales are getting really close!

    What are your favorites?

  7. Although I haven't seen all these segments, I think it's awesome that they're proof of how good TV can be.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Scenes of Castle were great, but our ninja fighting all hurt with Bodnar was better

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have to agree with "We speak for the dead". Perfect and touching.

    ReplyDelete
  10. This had to be one of the hardest weeks! XD
With finale's upon us, I can only imagine the next few weeks will be even harder!

Supernatural of course. It was a tremendous episode with a number of great scenes. Dean taking of Sam was special.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Philip saving Elizabeth in "The Americans" was my favorite for sure--an exciting finish to a great season. I also liked the end of HIMYM when they revealed "the real karate kid" had been with them all along :). Great moment for Barney.

  13. My favorite scene this week was from Game of Thrones: Jaime and Brienne in the bath. But I also loved POI Root and Finch conversarion, and also Supernatural, with big bro Dean. I would add the final scene from SPN, the one when the brothers find Cas.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Game of Thrones - Jaime and Brienne in the bath.
One of the best pieces of drama I have seen on TV this season. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I LOVED the whole last episode of The Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have to say that there are a lot of great scenes, but Nikita's Ryan holds the trigger to the bomb wins for me. That was awesome! I just love Ryan! and the shower scene was hilarious lolll also Felicity goes undercover and Castle's whole episode :3

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would also submit from Supernatural, Sam telling Dean that he has always thought of himself as being "unclean" even as a little kid and that he is now being purified. Jared did an excellent job in that scene. One could feel his shame and pain.

    ReplyDelete
  18. ending montage on New Girl - thats one of the best scenes from a sitcom i've seen never mind this week :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nikita, the shower scene was so funny and Ryan's speech was amazeballs! *-* Bates Motel's scenes are pratically the same one, but they were both incredible, too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Linlighthouse5 May 2013 at 16:59

    1. Beckett tells Castle she loves hime 2. Ron's girlfriend, Diane, is pregnant 3. Elementary

  21. So many great scenes this week....But out of all of them Jammie and Brienne scene was amazing,It was raw and powerful, tender and heartbreaking, each laying themselves open and vulnerable to each other wow they blew away!

Bates Motel- when Norman walks away, he unnerves me at times, knowing what lies ahead.

The Following-When Ryan realizes agent Parker is dead. I was happy he shot the sob but i actually was wishing for a slower death,he deserved to be tortured.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Castle and Stana Katic rocked as usual. Can Stana be named the best actress on television please?? What a great episode and all Castle fans were squeeling from the I LOVE YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Criminal Minds - Reid and Maeve's Dance :')

    ReplyDelete
  24. The Vampire Diaries had one of the best episodes/scenes of season 4...it was full of suspense and the scene where Matt dies and Damon gets Elena to turn her humanity back on totally blew my mind...I couldn't believe what was happening....it was a brilliant scene and the acting was terrific!! Nina Dobrev totally owned it!! Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley were amazing and made the scene breathtaking ,proving how hard it must be for Elena to choose one of the brothers since she obviously has feelings for both...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Supernatural of course!!!All the Dean/Sam scenes were so great <3

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bates Motel. ''I don't think you're a nice girl.'' Freddie Highmore creeped the crap out of me. Great acting. He actually took me by surprise.

That and the entire ''Zero Day'' episode of Person Of Interest. Not a single bad scene there!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I picked Game of Thrones,Vampire Diaries and Supernatural......if i would watch the other shows maybe i would have voted for them too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It was hard to choose between that and The Person of Interest scene as my scene of the week with POI winning out for me, but that GOT bath scene had to be one of my fave's in GOT so far, because they took something incredibly simple (two people in a bath house) and made it SO emotionally professing for those characters since each also has extreme opposing issue's in terms of their perception of sexuality in relation to defining gender roles. Those actors are JUST great together on screen period!

    ReplyDelete
  29. InvestedInYourFuture5 May 2013 at 18:05

    POI machine talk, hands down.

Root was my one of favourite characters already, but after this she is THE favourite character of the entire show. Such a brilliant acting by Amy Acker.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Opening scene of Hannibal is great!!! But there's also a lot of other great - brilliant scenes!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Voted for both Castle ones and Supernatural, but there were lots of great scenes this week..Person of Interest, Scandal among many others

    ReplyDelete
  32. While I found that there were a number of awesome episodes this week with awesome scenes, I knew from the moment I saw it at the beginning of the week that this scene was "The Scene of the Week":

Jaime's confession to Brienne in Game of Thrones. So powerfully delivered to Jaime and continued the path of humanizing Jaime.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ryan with the trigger on Nikita was pretty awesome. That SEAL thought he was up against a naive kid who sits at a desk, and was met with a steely-eyed, fearless badass.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Revenge : VIctoria's reaction to the interview

    Scandal : Mellie's speech

Grey's Anatomy : When Meredith forget where she was was going...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Too much this week! A good thing, but it makes my favorite scene list really long and impossible to put in order.

Person Of Interest - The flashback where Ingram's number shows up, the conversation between Finch and Root, and the final scene of Finch switching wires so the machine would call Reese instead of Root.

The Vampire Diaries - Elena gets her emotions back

Supernatural - Just in general best episode it's had in a while. Sam "out of it" and Dean putting him in ice, etc.

Arrow- Felicity goes undercover and Oliver saves her and Oliver rescuing Walter (awesome fight scene).

Nashville - Love scene of Rayna and Deacon

Nikita - Ryan's speech was great and the shower scene so funny.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Any scene from Castle! The whole episode was amazing, but the 2 scenes in the poll were favs. of mine for different reasons: the "I love you" because I´ve been waiting for it, the flashback for the reasons already said:)

    ReplyDelete
  37. It was a good episode too! It was nice to see a pre-Red Dragon Chilton introduced and how the show continues GREAT allusions to the films and novels (like the scene where Hannibal, Jack, and Freddy eat dinner and Hannibal says, nice to have "old friends" for dinner, which ties into a line and scene form the end of Silence of the Lambs (film).

    ReplyDelete
  38. Castle fans, if you want to watch all the flashbacks back-to-back and in sequence, you can see them on YouTube here

  39. I loved both scenes listed here in Castle, although I loved the "Rick, I love you" scene more. She just said it so naturally; it shows how much she's changed and how much more she cares for Castle than the boyfriends we've seen her have.

On NCIS, I think my favorite scene was the end when Vance asked Ziva if it was over and she said that it was. (although from what is known about the final two episodes, that was only half true)

The entire episode of The Office just made me smile but the Dwight-Jim hug and Jim congratulating Dwight was definitely a highlight. I also loved all the Oscar-Angela scenes. When you think about it, she doesn't really have a reason to accept his help. But you can see on his face that he's concerned about her and not just doing it out of pity because he was part of the reason her marriage fell apart. I really hope that Dwangela gets their happy ending.

    ReplyDelete
  40. She definitely deserves that title. The Emmys need to take notice and realize that Castle isn't just your typical crime drama: there's a lot more to it!

    ReplyDelete
  41. i also think the best scene is the flashback scene of castle "we speak for the dead". the music the clips... awesome! the entire episode was awesome! another good scene of the ep was the flashback of the terrible situations and the flashback of the kisses! and of course the i love u - scene! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Both Castle scenes listed above, the NCIS scene when Ziva fights and kills Bodnar (finally!), the Vampire Diaries scene when Elena turns here emotions back on (once again, finally!), and a honorable mention to the Bones scene when Bones proposes to Booth :D

I can't simply just pick three...I just can't do it! XD

    ReplyDelete
  43. there were better scenes in doctor who. there were better scenes in a lot of those shows. i don't get where some people's heads are.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, great analysis!! So glad you like it!
