Revolution - 1x19 "Children of Men" - Overview & Speculation

Hello Revolutionaries! What an episode!

This week we start with where we left off in last weeks episode ("Clue") with Rachel walking into Monroe's tent with a grenade in hand and pin pulled!

Two Monroe Republic soldiers tackle Rachel to the ground while two other soldier hold Monroe back and he too falls to the ground. Rachel struggles with the soldiers to hold onto the grenade, but rarely looses eye contact with Monroe. Soon the grenade slips from her hands and ends a little ways away from them and it explodes, but unfortunately for Rachel, her pursuits are thwarted as no one is severely injured and now is prisoner of Monroe.

She quickly is taken to the front doors of The Tower where the hand scanner allows her access, but only a handful of people including Randall, Monroe, Rachel, and a few soldier make it inside before the door shuts locking everyone else out. Rachel and Randall discuss how it is Rachel has access and Randall doesn't. Randall suspects it was Grace. Rachel then confronts Randall and how he could ever bring Monroe here and Randell expresses that she should be able to understand self preservation, which is something her actions suggest's she is currently against. Randall takes them to a satellite surveillance room where he explains to Monroe that if they have access to something on level 12, that they will be able to have unimaginable power in being able to control the world. Randall has noticed that the elevators are working and he proceeds to take them to level 12...

In the meantime our band of rebels make it to the Tower and are trying to figure out how to infiltrate the Monroe Republic. Luckily Neville comes across Aaron hiding out in the woods and  explains to them what has happened to Rachel. Tom and Jason stage a coo long enough to give Aaron time to use his book and over ride the access codes, but not before getting shot at, but Aaron is successful and they do make it inside.

Randall, Rachel, Monroe, and some soldiers don't make all the way down to level 12. The elevator stops at level 11! We saw in last weeks episode that there were people, other than Grace, inside the Tower. The minute the characters step onto this level it becomes a massacre! Soldiers of the Monroe Republic quickly turn into paint ball-like blood splatters across the walls, as some kind of weapon fire rings out. Rachel is able to get access to some hidden vault or panic room, but Monroe is able to follow her and push his way in.

Rachel again attempts to kill Monroe, but physically isn't able to. Monroe tries to be rational and says they should work together and that she can get back to killing him later. He then finds a hidden panel which reveals special weapons, but Rachel refuses to help him access it and we see him try to beat away on the special protective glass.

Miles, Aaron, Nora, and Charlie also end up on level 11. They make they're way through several dead bodies. Aaron comes across a room where it appears lab animals, such as monkeys, seem to once reside.
Rachel notices on a viewing monitor that Miles, Nora, Aaron, and Charlie are there, which leads Monroe to also notice. Monroe tries to reason with Rachel, who has forced him to acknowledge that he is responsible for killing her son. He does promise to not kill Charlie and admits to Rachel that he has been rethinking things, as he recently learned he has a son. Rachel, feeling she doesn't have a real choice, agrees. She gets access to the guns and Monroe goes out first and she follows. Charlie and Aaron end up together hidden behind shelves  when they're about to get fired upon, but Monroe protects them and marches on to find Miles.

Rachel gets to Aaron and Charlie and they try to escape, Charlie and Rachel briefly fight, as they move through out the level, but not before long getting captured by the people of The Tower! They are taken to a special room where Grace and a man named Dan greets them. It turns out Dan knows Rachel and that they have been living in the Tower since the night before the lights went out and live to serve and protect level 12. Grace tells Aaron that he is a big deal to them, but they take away his book and burn it. as Dan also points out that Rachel's plan to turn the lights back on could also in theory set the world a blaze!!! (And as viewer Pascal had predicted, this idea of "Scorched Earth" ties back to Jane Warren and her laser ground scorching devise!)

In the meantime Neville and his son Jason have been captured, but Neville is able to manipulate their captures in starting a revolt (the number was "12" when they are released). Jason asks him, "What's your angle?" and Neville just darkly smirks.

Monroe finds Miles. Each armed with an electromagnetic gun aimed at each other...and Nora is nowhere to be seen.

This is definitely my favorite episode of season so far! I wish every episode of Revolution could be like this one!! There was so much action, some nice mythology reveals, and character reuniting after so long, introductions to new characters (YAY for Glen Morshower!!), and a real immanent and thrilling atmosphere!

Sometimes I watch Revolution with my mom and although we usually come off with very similar insights, she's had theory since "Nobody's Fault But Mine" that I can't ignore after viewing this episode. A lot of us has speculated that Miles is most likely Charlie's father, but my mom thinks that could easily be a red herring, as she thinks Charlie could be Monroe's child!! When she first said it me back before we took our lengthy break, I agreed that Charlie does look like Monroe, even though I think she often behaves like Miles. Since we've come back from our break, I kept thinking this would better the story if Miles was her father, as it would make better excuse for why Miles might feel so strongly for both Rachel and Charlie, but I have to admit this other idea of my mom's would be a real twist. What really struck me was how Monroe was with Rachel here. Sure he needed to use her get access to all kinds of things, but really, why did he keep his promise? Is he really only becoming sentimental, because of his son?? We also have to ask why he kept Rachel alive so long? Why he didn't he find Ben sooner? And why did he want Miles to think Rachel was dead? Does he care for her?? Is there a history between them as well?? Of course it doesn't necessarily mean that Monroe would be Charlie's father, but the prospect that  Charlie could then have a "half"-brother I find intriguing.

At any rate I really liked David Lyons performance in this episode. His character was finally acting rational and there were no traces of his sometimes nervous breakdown of a wishy-washy sociopath, --granted this is also one of the few episodes we see him removed from his element (Philadelphia/his office) which is often where I think he behaves the worst.

I also had thought The Monroe Republic could fall apart by the end of the season, but I didn't expect Tom Neville to claim a new leadership status and cause a revolt! I don't know if he'll be able to rise to power with a new militia for very long, or if he just plans on destroying Monroe and re-emerging elsewhere (is he still with the Georgia Federation??), but it seems likely that he wants to climb the ladder, but just imagine if everyone around him might burn to the ground?!

Going back to The Bad Robot Factor section of last weeks overview, I had made parallels with these now Tower Protectors with the Others, Dharma, and the Hydra Dharma Station, including possible speculation of animal experimentation and animal genetic modification might relate to The Tower. It's unclear then what is on Level 7, as I'm not sure if The Tower Protectors had access to other Levels before Grace fixed the elevators, and considering we now know that there where animals there at some point it, seems reasonable that Level 7 might have some deadly animals and it was not just the Tower Protectors that killed the guard.

Something tells me Aaron will have a key role in finale. despite the book being destroyed. They have to warship him for a reason and it would be nice to see him rise to the occasion, because I think he is the other heart of gold of the series.

It was also curious that Glenn Morshower's character's name was Dan. It makes me think that perhaps Danny was named after him.

The showdown with Monroe and Miles and the way in which some of level 11's architecture appears is reminiscent to Star Wars' Death Star interior scenes and similar to the show down between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader at the end of A New Hope...I hope that doesn't mean Miles is going to die and become all ghost like (but I would be cool with a near death and?or super human ability), but it might support my Mom's theory about Charlie's father being "Darth Vader" and maybe even that there isn't only one Tower...At any rate I hope they blast each other at the same time causing them to each fall back, proving to be equal forces.

So what did you guys think?? Did you like the episode? What do think is going to happen in the fianle? Are the lights coming back on? Is part of the world going to be burned to the ground? Or is something else going to happen? Who do you think will make it to next season??? Sound off in the comments below!

References:
Children of Men is a 2006 science fiction-Dystopian film from Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron loosely based on the 1992 novel The Children of Men by P.D. James. The film tells a story set in the future where infertility has left humanity on the brink of collapse until one women, a refugee seeking salvage becomes pregnant and a civil servant, whom lost his child to flu pandemic, serves to protect her so she and her child can survive. Cuaron has many cultural references laced through out the film. The novel's title, "The Children of Men" is a Catholic Allegory from Psalm 90 (89):3, but Alfonso Cuaron has expressed he was interested in preserving spiritual archetypes, but not dogma.

In terms of this episode and the series, the title relates to the film in terms of being in a Dysopian future and in both cases the science fiction aspects are visually kept to minimum, as both Revolution and Children of Men seem to not want futuristic aesthetic to take away from relatibal drama. Additionally from flashbacks in previous episodes we know Rachel had to go to risky lengths to keep Danny alive during the early stages of her pregnancy, and although this episode didn't feature Rachel's pregnancy, it still relates to Children of Men's themes about protecting the future of humanity, as we have people who live to protect level 12 of The Tower.

The episode title may also be a play on words, as it is Danny that motivates that drive Rachel to kill Monroe and it is Charlie that makes her have to move on from her own stand.

There might also be a reference to Terry Gilliam's semi-futuristic science fiction film "The 12 Monkeys", as we have people (including scientists) in the future living underground trying to save humanity, the number 12 is highlighted, and there might be rampant [experimental] animals on the loose in and/or out of the Tower. (Could this then also be a hint of time travel for Revolution?)

And as mentioned above, there might also be more Star Wars references such as parallels and allusions from the end of "A New Hope" and there's also an allusion to "Return of Jedi" (also referenced in The Pilot), as Aaron tried to open 'the blast door' while being fired upon.

Bad Robt Factor:
This episode of Revolution didn't really make as big deal about it as it might later, but Rachel's plans basically are thwarted, because Charlie (and Miles) came looking for her, thinking that she needs to save Rachel from Monroe or Randall, not knowing that Rachel had other intentions. Rachel briefly expresses her disappointment as they were trying to escape. This is very similar to how how Jack reacts to Kate on Lost when she comes to barracks to save Jack from the Others, not knowing that he had made a deal with them and was going to leave the Island. ("The Man From Tallahassee"). Additionally John Locke further screws up that plan by blowing up the submarine with C4 from the Flame Station ("Enter 77"). There could be upcoming parallels between John Locke and Tom Neville...

Additionally, as I had noticed in the Pilot Recap, Grace continues to have a similar Beatrice Klugh (<-sounds like "clue") like leadership status among the Tower Protectors, as Bea has with the Others on LOST.

There are also two upcoming science fiction Bad Robot film projects that already share subject matter with Revolution specifically relating to the officially introduced Hardon Collider. The first project tentatively titled "God Particle" will be directed by Julius Ohna and written by Oren Uzeil and tells the story of people aboard an American space station who witness the Earth disappear, presumably to the idea that the Hardon Collider created a black hole and swallowed the Earth! (The part about people being alone in space sounds a little like Solaris). The other is tentatively titled, "Collider" and will be directed by Edgar Wright. Rumors have it that "Collider" tells a story about a group of people form various time periods who time travel to the future by means of a Hardon Collider trying to figure out if they can get back. The association/rumor has to do with a series of comic like-web series dubbed as "Collider Motion Comics" stated to relate to a film called "Collider" out fall of 2013. Each webisode features a back story of a character. But I stress there has been no official confirmation about the plot of "Collider" and/or if these comic webisodes go with this film.

You can read about God Particle and Collider at the links provided :)))

**********SPOILERS - BELIEVE - PRESS RELEASE****************

Special Note: As mentioned above in "references" Children of Men's title comes from dystopian science fiction film directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Just recently NBC picked up another Bad Robot Pilot for next mid-season titled, Believe, which has been directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Cuaron will also serve a writer and executive producer. Believe seems to take a page from FRINGE, being about a little girl with special kinetic abilities (Think: Cortexiphan Kids!), who needs protected from those that fear her power. A group known as "The Believers" seek to help protect her, including springing a wrongly convicted man named Tate (rhymes with Nate) from jail to specifically do so.... Alfonso Cuaron also directed the third Harry Potter film: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In both cases (Children of Men/Harry Potter 3) a man serves to protect someone special and/or important to the future of humanity. Harry Potter is also a common Bad Robot pop cultural reference as seen on LOST ("Dues Ex Machina"), Revolution ("Soul Train"), and possibly Beyond the Fringe Comic #3-B --and sudo-sister show Once Upon A Time ("Broken").  Once Upon A Time also seemed to reference Believe in the season 2 finale with  Greg and Tamara belonging to an anti-magic group (opposite to Believe's Believers) also calling themselves "Believers" and Jamie Chung, who plays Mulan on OUAT, is also playing a character set to appear in the Believe Pilot (No word yet if she's a series regular on Believe and/or how many episodes she is set to appear in and/or what that means for the future of Mulan on OUAT!?)

Hunh. I was wondering why we got that reference to monkeys. At the time, I just thought "28 Days Later," but then there were no zombies. If it is a Twelve Monkeys reference, that could add some interesting twists--though, if it is, I suspect it'll be more along the lines of a plague reference than a time-travelling one.

on the note of toms revolt (haha that rhymmed) i would love to see tom take over the republic! he would be badass, and he will accomplish world domination - not only is he smart but he is so cool when he manipulates others.

also with the monroe&Miles teaming up, that would be awsome, but i doubt it will last long; if monroe finds his son and he turns out to be the leader of another militia (which is my theory) he'll just turn back to his old self, which will be awsome too :D as long as monroe doesn't die until he finds his son, otherwise i will be forced to cry :L

  3. I'm not 100% sure, but I couldn't deny that there were 3 things that might point to it, but in theory there could be other animals, but I felt like Aaron dropping the line was meant to invoke something, but we'll see. I agree there's a bit of a 28 Days Later vibe too! :)

  4. Thanks! I love Star Wars too, so I think it's fun when it gets referenced on TV of Film! XD

  5. "I felt some special feelings from the scenes between them - not a romantic feeling, it was like they're old friends and have known each other for a long time, so they're familiar with each other's next step and took advantages from it, like battle of wits. In this episode, when they got stuck in VP's bunker, the conversation between them, for me ,was the best part in this episode, even in this whole season: two guilty people were face to face, Monroe made his confession, showing his weakest side to the person who're so eager to kill himself, and Rachel's been already on her way of self redemption, which told us that she's not the kind of selfish and brutal person as some people thought. Elizabeth can always make her parts better, make this show better by her excellent performances, not only the scene with Monroe, but also those scenes with Randall,Ben,Grace and Dan. I'm so proud to be her fan, to support such a talented and amazing actress. It has to be said:) "

Couldn't agree more (except that I could see something romantic between them). But Nicely said!! These two had some great scenes and I was glad we had a minute to see them come face to face and that Monroe for the first time ever really acknowledged part of who he is! I hope SO much that he makes it into the next season. Mr. Lyons character is getting better and better to watch and well I already come into Revolution liking Elizabeth Mitchell--So I know what she's capable of.

You're right that it is interesting that Monroe does call Charlie by her actual name, as opposed to her nickname. Whether romantic or platonic I think there's much more there between those two characters...And poor Charlie is just totally in dark about who these people really are and/or what they have gone through together!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I don't believe Jason turned so quickly to side with his farther.I believe Jason did that only so they could get out of the situation they were in.And how did Charlie let him down? and again?...Now Tom on the other hand will turn at the drop of the hat,for any reason as long as it saves his behind.

  7. Part of me thinks ya it would be cool to see Tom rise to power and get his own militia, but then I keep thinking about this scorched earth possibility and I could just see it being written in a way where Tom is on verge of being successful, but then like a ton of his men die. But I think you're right. Tom probably will rise to power!

But I totally would love to see Miles and Bass be on the same side even if it's for a few episodes.XD

    ReplyDelete
  8. I don't either. I think he was pretty confused, otherwise he wouldn't need to ask his father what his father's angle is, but by association and just to be able to survive, he'll probably have stay close to his father, although I hope he does something heroic next week, but I don't know if he'' be able to reunite with Charlie and gang before the season ends????

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree,i wish they had two more episodes,i think there is too much to cover in an hour. I believe Tom would do anything to become the leader of The Monroe Republic, but it all depends on what transpires between Miles and Bass.I mean,if Miles and Bass really wanted to kill each other it could have been done long ago. They had at least 3 opportunities to off each other and they haven't,so unless it happens in the finale Monroe and Miles will put their differences aside and work together. If that does happen Tom will become the leader but then what will happen when the lights get turned on???

The Tower/Lost,Lost the tower.Humans guarding the island, humans guarding the Tower!! So ok, the guy cannot remember the last time he felt sun on his face, where are they getting their food from? How are they growing it? yeah,i know hydroponics. But even with that it doesn't fully jive.

Now we have the Tower people (for lack of a better word),i feel as if we just met the group from the tail end of 815! And i'm sure there are a few back stories we will be introduced to but is there enough time left? BTW,were they in the basement or on a floor? I missed seeing where they wound up..

    ReplyDelete
  10. A few episodes ago I also though The Tower in the finale might parallel The Swan site both in "The Incident" and "Live Together, Die Alone"/"Flashes Before Your Eyes", as now also being underground like this without going outside reminds me of Desmond's story too and then of course I think Rachel will juxtaposition Juliet by living instead of dying...but in both cases Time Travel occurs. Desmond goes back and possibly alters the current time line's future by making a new found connection to Mrs. Hawking (and Fringe's Ghost Network idea could be personified to learning relative information through multiple reality and not just in reality brain waves--Zack Orth is the guess star of that episode!! -Which, getting visions of other timelines is an ability Desmond recieves when he returns, as he sees all the ways "Charlie" Pace died in previous timelines) and then at the end of the Incident the characters go back to 'their' present 2007...

    ReplyDelete
  11. No I totally understand what you mean. Revolution has seemed so grounded in the here and now that it doesn't seem likely with the exception of some of Charlie's abilities and possible 'cross over' to the other side in "Kashmir", but at the same time I know they're going to have to continue to sprinkle the science fiction elements and advance the character's roles/purpose in some way...I would thing they would have to up the ante somehow and I would hope they would use more science fiction to do it, obviously that doesn't mean time travel is necessary, but they could always do it in small doses or limited situations like a character leaves and comes back, has visions, sees ghosts, ect, ect.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I wouldn't rule it out. I never in a million years thought time travel would be a part of Supernatural - Kripke's other show - and it's been a staple since season four. I don't think we've gone once season since then without somebody time traveling. It's ... kinda frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I've mostly enjoyed the Supernatural time travel episodes, but then, as I said, I love time travel stories. You're right, though, it did seem an odd thing in that show--more an SF than fantasy kind of thing, though executed via fantasy rather than SF devices.
But given its use of flashbacks, Revolution already has a mechanism in place to give us earlier events; mixing flashbacks and time travel would seem ... needlessly cluttered. And unless they were going to adopt the premise that the past cannot be changed, allowing time travel (into the past, anyway) would problematize not only the present but also the past as seen in flashbacks. And if the past can't be changed, much of the point of time travel would be gone. (This question is SPN is admittedly vexed, since they seem to say on the one hand that time travel into the past can't change things, but travel to the future is only to a potential future, not an inevitable one. You can of course argue that the past is fixed but the future fluid, bu then, that becomes a perspective problem, doesn't it? The fixed past is the past regardless, so if you go to the future, its past is fixed, so you should not be able to go back in time and then prevent that future from occurring. . . .)
Again, that doesn't mean it won't happen, or that they couldn't do something interesting with it. I'm not ruling it out, to be sure, but I'm also not seriously anticipating it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I feel more like we met the Others, not the tail people. If only they'd been in the middle of book club when Monroe's guys busted in. That will never not make me laugh about that show. "They ruined book club! KILL THEM!"

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bad Robot's works seems to follow Hugh Everett's MWI Theory with never sending branch off method to be true to infinity universe theories (In Hugh Everett's theory there are no paradoxes because multiple infinite universe eliminates wave sync collapse), alternate realities can be made from others. In Lost however, it would seem the Island gives tight course correction, making it very hard to change from time line/incarnation to incarnation, as with Lost it's something kept in the dark and have to read between the line to see. On Fringe however, there was a healthy variety along side parallel corporeal, in casualty loops ogether, and completely re-arranged, and both had conscience time travel (The Constant Desmond-another 1996, Desmond all of season 6 -ethereal [death] plane in process of transitioning, Peter- another 2026 The Day We Died)

IMO it would only work if the premise is to either put them way in the past for a spiritual reason or to change one event for trickle/butterfly effect, or to go back before the black out to attempt to change that outcome, but I'm inclined to think if Time Travel happens it will either happen later or it will only relate to a character temporarily doing it to either get an ability or information needed, as I still see Bad Robot's signature redemption arcs here...

But I agree that at the moment it seems out of place, except that there may be parallels to The Swan site with the Tower....

    ReplyDelete
  16. LOL! Maybe that's what the 'monkey's' on level 7 are protecting: 'the books for book club!!!!!" XD

  17. Great review @DarthLocke4 ! And thanks for the mention! :)

Though it will probably not go down the way we think, the promo showed lightning storms?

And wow, you notice a lot of references I missed! Great job! :D

    ReplyDelete
  18. Tom should just be shot, revived by nanites, and shot again for good measure. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. YES!!! I VOTE YES!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thank you! Sure! You totally called it and I'm glad it payed off! :)

Knowing you're a fellow Fringie, the lightening might have do to the nanites absorbing the energy...It's very similar to things we have seen during end of season 4 with William Bell/Jessica Holt triggering Olivia with the nanites so she could absorb the energy and be Bell's conduit...This could be that is how the ground might burn, as severe lightening can cause fires, but I think something else also has to happen. I don't know if charcoal world is a big enough game changer ;P

The electricity/lightening also reminds me of the film "The Prestige", which has to do with cloning and teleportation devise...Or even something like "Back to the Future"!!

Thematically it also might go back to Maggie's death episode again ("The Plague Dogs"), because during that episode Danny is able to sense a bad storm is coming (Tornado) and it's the only bad storm we have seen...It's also is the episode that more blatantly references "The Wizard of Oz.". I could be wrong, but it feels like something unexpected is coming, which is why I can't shake the idea of doubles, time travel, or some weird ability related to time...but I know I tend to get ahead of myself. Finale's make me anxious! So glad we have another season. I just hope Monroe makes it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. As long as everyone could take turns shooting him, after being revived i'm all for it!..Ooh,it could go on and on and on,just think of the torture,ha!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes,that is the prerequisite,he must be able to survive into next season,ha!

    ReplyDelete
  23. He shouldn't, which means he probably will. By the looks of it Monroe survives as well.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I remember a show that had that, keep reviving people just to kill them over and over again. Though I can't remember anything about that show besides that, now I'm curious what it was... :-/

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's a great comparison with Fringe! I had totally forgot miss Holt used nanites to trigger Olivia. Also she was played by Rebecca Mader, so in that way we could link it to Lost as well. :P Also, ''The Prestige'' is such a great movie, love the Nolan brothers!

Yeah, a literal scorched earth scenario seems unlikely since the nanites infest everything and everyone so everything and everyone would be burned. It will probably be more electrical storms and perhaps render the earth infertile or something, perhaps people too? Would be a callback to Lost's island infertility problems. It will stop curing cancer as well, as told by dr. Warren. Since we breathe these things as well, who knows what consequences it could have on people.

Also a good call to ''The Plague Dogs", always struck me as weird how little bad weather in general we've seen. Let alone storms and tornadoes. Looking back on the season as a whole there seems to be a lot of foreshadowing that could go down in the finale. Nora's alligator in the water, Danny's storm. I hear you when finale's make you anxious! Certainly on Bad Robot shows, which tend to be game changers in general. I.e. Fringe's Peter disappearing, Lost's island time jumping.

What can I say, I love Bad Robot. :)

I think Monroe is pretty safe, he seems to be outside when the power is turned back on. Or perhaps he will be struck by a bolt of lightning? :P

    ReplyDelete
  26. "be more electrical storms and perhaps render the earth infertile or something, perhaps people too?"

OMG! THIS! Really good call, especially the people factor and our 1x19 title!!

And ya, The Prestige IS awesome! :)

  27. I think it was Criminal Minds but i can be wrong.I also think John Sanford had one of the killers doing that in one of his 'Prey' books.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I thought Criminal Minds was more or less a cop show? Reviving someone from the dead seems pretty out there for a cop show? :o

    ReplyDelete
  29. Not that the BAU unit would revive. the person, they go after that sick-o. The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit has a wide range of duties. Not only do they apprehend criminals, they have to have advance degrees in Forensic and Criminal Psychology. They also deal with counter terrorism, and Threat assessment. As well as crimes against children and adults. They are the ones who deal with the likes of the Boston bombers,9/11 and people like Tom and Monroe...

  30. thank you, happy to have you feel the same way:)

from the flashback we can see it was Miles who decided to save people and started to maintain social orders after blackout. I think at beginning Monroe didn't want to be at the position he is right now: a General of Monroe Republic,a leader, he only wanted to help Miles and that's all he cared about. but somehow they disagreed on sth and Miles left him. For Monroe it just felt like he lost the faith on what/why he had been done all these years: those fights and even building the republic. and Miles left changed him into a person with trust issues. I think it’s Miles who built Monroe we're seeing right now, so it must be Miles who will change it or solve his problem:) I really hope Monroe could be on his way of whitewash. I can’t wait to see the tender side of General Monroe:)

PS:sorry for the late reply, I’ve been working on my final paper the whole week *_*

  31. About the Jason, I think you made a good point. I just thought it directly, but your idea is more plausible:)
I always think Charlie could do better to Jason than She did. Like in last episode, just trusted Jason…if thinking from Jason’s side, Charlie didn't understand that Jason threw her out of train to save her from Tom, which might be frustrated for Jason because of the misunderstanding. When Jason needed her backup, she didn't trust him and this disappointed him. In this episode, Jason couldn't get into the tower, at the beginning he might expect that Charlie would wait for him...but no, he didn't get the chance to get in.
Sorry for the late reply, I've been working on my final paper this week *_*

  32. No Problem. I check my disqus dashboard all the time!
(Good luck with your paper!!) :)

Sometimes I think that there is a reason that Bass was out playing with Miles so much. I have to wonder since he rarely mentions him, if Bass's father wasn't a good father...

I mean even what we get from Matheson side is also interesting, as we know Mile's father passed him the knife (presumably because he's the soldier) and not Ben, and so far it appears Miles was also out hanging with Bass and not his own brother.

And when we compare Miles to Ben, we almost get the sense that Miles, despite loosing himself to Militia, might be more honorable than Ben, as Ben never knew what it was to really fight for something, but rather more than willing to supply the military with the next generation of new and deadly weapons...I mean who lets their wife leave and never goes looking for her, granted he had to take care of the kids. In this episode's flashbacks's it is "the kids" the prove to be a big motivator in terms of forcing Rachel to take a more responsible parental role. I think it's all very interesting. Hopefully next season we get a little bit more about these 4.

  33. Working on your paper is much more important than getting back to me!! Jason has given Charlie cause to mistrust him for sure. But yes there were times when he was being sincere and truthful but honestly how was Charlie to know the difference,he has been flip, flopping so often it was hard for her to tell.

There wasn't one second where i thought Charlie would want to leave Jason behind, not even Tom,there just wasn't enough time for them to get inside before the doors closed. That being said who knows what is going to happen tomorrow night, for all we know Jason and Tom could be a force to be reckoned with? One thing we can count on is its going to be a great finale!!! :)

  34. Pascal i stopped watching CM three yrs ago.I didn't see much character progression,and they usually have a case of the week,whether it being a rapist,kidnapper,serial killer,etc,etc.Whether they changed i couldn't say,sorry.

  35. Thanks for answering, doesn't really sound like a show for me. Too many case of the week stuff and without great characters/character progression my interest wanes fast. :)

  36. I really like time travel stories (I love Twelve Monkeys, too), but time travel as an element of Revolution would seem . . . odd. Doesn't mean it won't happen, of course, and time travel/apocalypse combinations are certainly possible (as you point out), but I'd've thought there'd have been more of a suggestion of that possibility by now if it were going to happen. Maybe THAT'S what we'll get when the power is turned back on--time shift or creation of a parallel time line. . . . That'd let them bring back "dead" characters. . . .

  37. love your article! always enjoy it! I'm so excited on this episode too!!! I think this is the BEST one ever!!!!!

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Rachel and Monroe! In previous episodes, when Rachel was a Monroe's prisoner, I felt some special feelings from the scenes between them - not a romantic feeling, it was like they're old friends and have known each other for a long time, so they're familiar with each other's next step and took advantages from it, like battle of wits. It has to be said:)

Aaron has to be mentioned in this episode. it's getting clear that his existence finally means something:) his line to Tom "With this book I can, you dick"- one of the best lines!

just as your reaction, It's surprised for me about Tom's revolt too. I think Jason helped him because Charlie let him down again in this episode, so he decided to follow his father; Julia encouraged Tom to be a leader before, to replace Monroe. At that time he refused because of his loyalty to Monroe, but in this ep he had his chance and no more pressure on loyalty, so he just did it. I'd like to see new two parties in season2: Miles&Monroe vs Tom. I don't like to see Miles and Monroe have to kill each other...it'll be more interesting to see they work together again as a team like the old times.

although Monroe became one of my fav characters, I still prefer the guess that Miles is Charlie's father:) Miles and Rachel care about each other, it feels right. As for Monroe..it's just so wired to image he is Charlie's father:) But Monroe always called Charlie "Charlotte", im curious if it means something...
