As the upfronts approach, it’s hard to scope out pilot pickup buzz at the major broadcast nets this year because there are few clear heat-seekers.
The big bets of this year’s development crop were made early on in the cycle (last summer and fall) and for the most part have retained their front-runner status: ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of Shield” with the Whedon clan; CBS’ redo of “Beverly Hills Cop”; NBC’s 22-episode throwdown for the Michael J. Fox domestic laffer; Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher in Fox’s cop comedy “Brooklyn 99″; and the union of David E. Kelley and Robin Williams in CBS’ “Crazy Ones.”

Tired going to Variety but page cannot be found. And oops,Variety is misspelled.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that, should be fixed now
ReplyDeleteI'm more interested in JJ's robot show than 'Believe' but really the only show I care about is the one definitely getting picked up and that's SHIELD
ReplyDeleteIt is,thanks!
ReplyDeleteHehe. In true Muphrey's Law style, you've misspelled 'tried' as 'tired' :)
ReplyDeleteOk,i haven't finished the article yet but if i'm not mistaken Christopher Meloni left L&O SUV last season ( the 2012,2013 season),yet they are making it sound like he is leaving the show now.....ummm Variety,i think your a little behind when it comes to that!
ReplyDeleteHahaha,i sure did!! Thanks! And yup,i didn't get much last night,lol... :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's the way the article was written but this seems to be mostly personal opinion rather than real network intel on pilots.
ReplyDeleteSide note: I'm hoping CBS passes on "NCIS: Red." The cast and the characters assembled for this 2nd NCIS spinoff were astoundingly dull. The semi trucks in that backdoor pilot were more interesting than the people in it.
This article feels zero informative. I prefer Deadline's take, this one feels like a personal opinion
ReplyDeleteThe last Deadline update did say that IF the NCIS spinoff gets picked up it's likely to undergo tweaking and/or recasting.
ReplyDeleteFranchise fatigue is a concern but it can be overcome with enough style and quality. Unfortunately, NCIS Red had neither.
ReplyDeleteQuote from Wikipedia: "On November 5, 2012, Deadline.com reported the first news about a spin-off of NCIS: Los Angeles titled NCIS: Red. The new characters were introduced during a two-parter episode of NCIS: Los Angeles. The spin-off will feature a team of mobile agents, who travel around the country to solve crimes"
ReplyDeleteAt this point, my guess would be that Red does get a pickup but is held for midseason where it is launched with some retooling/recasting. I won't be surprised at all if it gets a fall order, but it is getting less and less likely now.
ReplyDeleteActually, I don't even find the CW that predictable. I think you only feel that way because they are a smaller network, hence have fewer shows and hence fewer pilots, so we kind of get a sense of it being "more controlled", but I still can't know what they will do.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, both could be picked up since they are on different networks! I would give both a try.
ReplyDeleteIf that's their plan, CBS had better be damn sure they've got a hit on their hands with this show because these days midseason series premieres have a huge failure rate across all networks.
ReplyDeleteI think it will still fail but at least it will have a better chance of succeeding and of generating buzz than all of their recent midseason entries.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed for 'Intelligence'. Everyone's screen deserves a little more Holloway and Ory.
ReplyDeletePerhaps, but it still feels more predictable than say FOX, which also programs fewer hours than the other networks. It just feels like almost every pilot for every network is "going strong", "in contention", "still in the mix", etc. Who is to say if CBS picks up Backstrom or Surgeon General or the Advocates, or if ABC will go with Doubt or Betrayal or Westside or Murder in Manhattan. The only things we know about CBS for example is that Beverly Hills Cop will be picked up alongside Mom. Just about every single other pilot, both comedy and drama, is in contention. That's crazy and shows that these articles really don't know much of anything.
ReplyDeleteTrue, I agree for sure that most of these articles really don't tell anything.
ReplyDeleteOh, thanks! The name is just unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteThis!!
ReplyDeleteYou´re welcome :)
ReplyDeleteSo much vagueness and contradicting views this pilot season. I don't think I've been this confused on the matter since I started following pilot seasons...
ReplyDeleteThe only piece of news that everybody seems to agree on, is that SHIELD is getting picked up, but that doesn't say anything, seeing as it was a no-brainer since the mere idea of it was announced.
