You want to piss off an entire fan base- have one of their favorite characters cheat on their other favorite character for no rhyme or reason. Or is there?

After last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy I was annoyed and pissed and angered that Arizona cheated on Callie. As I’m sure everyone was. But now that I have calmed down I realize it’s not as far fetched as it seems.

On the surface we see Arizona cheats, but we also see who Arizona is cheating with. Lauren is a strong, accomplished, type A surgeon. Lauren is also blond and an attractive female- sound familiar? Lauren is Arizona pre-plane crash. Lauren is who Arizona desperately wants to be again. It is my belief that this situation has NOTHING to do with Callie. It reads as an individual selfish moment for Arizona. People will say you can’t separate the two they are married it all comes back to Callie, I would agree. However, I believe if it had anything to do with Callie the simple physical aspect of the person Arizona cheats with would be drastically different, which would have made the affair more personal. Last season we were given insight into Arizona’s past and from that we know that Arizona has a type and that’s a dark haired brunette. Something as trivial as hair color speaks volumes to me to let me know that this affair is just another vehicle for Arizona to try to find who she once was. It’s devoid of emotion it’s just pure animalistic sex, nothing more.

Who was Arizona and who is Arizona now?

She was this strong willed, kick ass, loving adorable surgeon you couldn't help but love. Now she is this one legged, angry bitter adulteress that we are all hating. But didn't we see this manifestation, couldn't we have predicted this could have happened, were the signs there and we just didn't take the time to see?

Callie- “I want a baby”
Arizona- “I don’t want children”

And so it begins- Looking back we never saw a true dialogue between Arizona and Callie regarding this major issue (much similar to Crowen). However what we do see is Callie wanting a child and Arizona being against the idea and at the moment they should have the conversation- Tragedy strikes- there’s a shooting in the hospital. Then magically Arizona is gamed for having a family with Callie to include a child. Next we see Arizona and Callie essentially getting along, loving each other and what not and suddenly there world is rocked again when Arizona gets the offer to go to Africa. Callie takes this news hard and again with no real conversation we see she is just whimsically willingly ready to give up her life and follow Arizona to Africa, no questions asked. Both Arizona and Callie have displayed instances of going all in for the woman that they love regardless of how they truly feel. As a result, they both internalize their true feelings. Now we all know what happens when you do that, it eats at you like a cancer. But we continue along their journey and Arizona returns and eventually Callie welcomes her back hesitantly but not because she is fully invested in the relationship again but it’s because she got knocked up by Mark and now wants a partner to go through this journey with. Instead of discussing what this means for their relationship and them as individuals the two of them embark on making this impending family dynamic “blindly”. The story progresses we see Arizona’s frustration with being the third wheel in her own relationship, this issue comes to a head at the baby shower but instead of exposing her feelings she accepts Callie’s B&B gift and they head on the road, literally.

Once again Arizona is confronted with the third wheel feeling in the car but instead of truly talking she makes this overture decision to propose to Callie right before they get into this major car accident. Yet again another life altering catastrophe occurs and yet again previous issues are swept under the rug because “life is too short to dwell on perceived trivial problems”. As a result, the cancer continues to grow.

Throughout Callie’s recovery Arizona is there as her rock and support which is beautiful and expected. But we don’t see them work through or talk about what occurred, much similar to the fact that we did not see them confront or discuss what they felt during the shooting. They just someone went back to the happy land they were used to being in. The next speed bump in the Calzona express is the wedding, everything that could go wrong went wrong- they have no priest and Callie’s mother is against the nuptials. But they persevered without so much as having a discussion with one another about two major issues that affect their wedding and ultimately their family. And the train keeps moving until the next hurdle Arizona’s best friend enters the picture dying of cancer and is completely out of options. We are to believe that he dies but we don’t know Arizona’s reaction our how she copes with this loss considering she is now in a plane crash herself. The aftermath of the plane crash for Callie and Arizona is extremely trying but it’s very much again internalized within them especially for Arizona because we don’t see her having an outlet or a confidant. While we root for her recovery we don’t realize we are just rooting for her physical relief. Then we are thrown a bone to the intimate aspect of Arizona and Callie’s relationship being affected and we receive solace when they finally reconnect. However, in none of Callie’s or Arizona’s storylines do they deal with the root of their problems as individuals or as a couple. That’s when we have this manifestation of what Arizona has done.

Arizona and Callie have been trapped in their own little bubble accepting things and moving on since the beginning of their relationship. As fans we cheer, we think wow they are so evolved and awesome and understanding. But we failed to acknowledge the many holes in them as individuals and as a couple. Arizona said to Mark during the wedding episode “I just need a minute to miss my brother.” I think her romp with Lauren is her moment to miss herself. She is not who she was, this was not the life she set out to have. By not being honest with herself and her partner about her true feelings the cancer has metastasized and wreck-havoc on every part of Arizona’s existence to make her go so far as to cheat on the woman that she loves.
It is well documented and expressed in the series that Arizona doesn't really show emotion or allows herself to be vulnerable and transparent, we didn't even know she had lost her brother let alone that she had a brother until a dramatic incident (George= Bus). She is the queen of internalizing her feelings because she was raised to be the “good man in the storm.” Arizona was never allowed to loose herself she always had to be the strong one for everyone. As with everyone we come to a point where we break and that manifests its-self in different ways, some people abuse drugs, some people abuse alcohol, some people turn to religion or some people just cheat.

So while on the surface Arizona cheating seems like it came from left field it didn't it was just festering right below the surface waiting to escape and Lauren giving her the ammunition and the permission to lose her-self, released all of the unresolved, unrealized issues Arizona and as an offset Callie have bubbling for quite some time.

So with that said the question remains- what is the end game? Can they as a couple come back from this major betrayal?

  1. To be honest although i know Arizona and Callie were supposed to be a couple, I never felt like they were.If the scene called for a kiss,it was like watching your best friend get a peck. What ever was required of them to do as a couple was at best their awkwardness, and not doing anything sexual.. When i see them i think of yeah the couple that is suppose to be gay. If Arizona gets it on with Lauren, where there is real passion maybe they will be better off and Callie should find someone else....hate saying that but i don't see them as a couple in true love.

  2. "She is the queen of internalizing her feelings because she was raised to be the “good man in the storm.” -- and remember one scene she said to Callie after out she's pregnant "I need to process.. I'm processing" line..

  3. Hello my dear! This is awesome. I agree with some and have some other thoughts as well. I'll save them for my review which will be posted tonight and then lets chat!

  4. If Lauren is old Arizona -- remember last episode Callie told Arizona while in X-ray room "I think I'm a little bit in love with her" so Callie seeing some bit of Arizona's character in Lauren.

  5. I get this was a moment for Arizona to be selfish... but thats exactly what she was - selfish. She took vows, she has a wife, who supported her through everything that happened after the crash. If Arizona has self worth problems she should have gone through them another way. I don't see how Callie can work around this. It will shatter her after everything that has happened.

  6. Hey friend!! Im glad you liked it, i was really nervous to post it. Im glad its being received well. I love when we disagree so i cant wait for ur review!!! lol

  7. She needed this moment to just lose all control (exactly like Lauren said to her) and do this completely irrational thing. She's been trying to hold everything together after losing her leg and this is just a sort of release for her. And I think that the way Lauren has been behaving around her lately just showed her that even without this part of her that she's lost forever, she can still have that feeling that some other person besides her wife who loves her, can feel attracted to her and still want her physically and find her sexy. I'm the biggest Calzona fan, but I actually like this story arc for Arizona and I think it's kinda like the last step in a grieving program for her. I think this will definitely help her to move on and fully accept her loss and be back to living as much of a normal life as she can.

  8. lol. Not disagree entirely. Just different and complimentary.

  9. true and she definitely went about the worst possible way. i dont see this really fixing anything for her. at least not in the near future. maybe it will open the dialogue that she and Callie so desperately need. IMO.

  10. I' m glad you liked the review. I don't know if Arizona can make it up to Callie. This is a huge betrayal, one that Callie has endured before and idk if she would be willing or able to forgive and try to work through this event.

  11. I completely agree- no one deserves to be cheated on. With that said i still think the why is important, if there is any hope for reconciliation i think the WHY is needed in order to move past and heal.

  12. there have been moments when i felt like they were more like roommates then a real couple. i rationalized it by thinking its probably bc of the actors comfort level or maybe the network doesn't want to play up the lesbian love too much. which is not unheard of. its definitely unfortunate, when moments when they should go full force and all in they do feel restricted and a bit timid. but they do enough to get the idea across.

  13. Thank you for sharng this and although like the rest I was sad and upset over the cheating I do understand a little bit better what Arizona has gone through. That she has lost herself and living a life she did not want. That makes sense with the baby issue and giving up Africa and raising a child with Callie. So I get that part. But I can not wrap my head aound her breaking her vows to her wife and child who have loved her throughout everythng. In just about every relationship in this show there has been cheating incluing Callie cheating on George. She was begged by Arizona to not leave her and yet Arizona does the one thing that could cause that. Calie isn't perect either but how much hurt must one take from the one they love? Arizona put her though hell this whole season and Callie stayed with her because she took vows. Arizona should have walked away from Lauren before anything happened because she took vows as well. They could have gone to counseling or anything else but the cheating. They could have separated or something. Seems the writers only know how to bring in infidelity to show drama. And they did it to the one couple on the show everyone had hoped would make it through with all the tragedies they have overcome. It wasn't fair to do that to their characters after all they had been through. They could have writen in an attempt to have another child or something.

  14. I have to agree. Sara seemed much more comfortable with intimate scenes than Jessica did. JCapp always seemed like she was pulling way. Where was the hot steamy romance that the other characterless had (Alex and Izzie, Mer and Der, Owen and Christina)? It was stilled and awkward. There were maybe one or two times where it was more natural. Arizona was always asking Callie not to leave or run but it was always Arizona leaving. I totally agree they never had any of the conversations they needed to have. I'm not where this will them as that is up to the writers but for me there is no excuse for infidelity.

  15. Your analysis and insight were excellent. However, I don't agree with infidelity no matter what the underling cause. If the character Arizona need to feel whole again and she could not do that with Callie, she should have been a "good man in a storm" and separated from Callie to find herself. And maybe they could have found their way back to each other. I'm not saying Callie is faultless, sometime she is cold and distant but she has always been there for Arizona. As much as it hurts to see this rift maybe it is a good thing because Callie needs to learn to be a more in-powered person (Callie can be self defeating) and Arizona needs to learn to more selfless (Arizona can be selfish). I worry about how this will affect Sophia. The one of the keys to any relationship is communication and these two never talk to each other about what is important, one of them always just gives in and the problems are never solved. So, it on to season ten and we will see how this will all wash out.

  16. Maybe Callie will open the door and say, "hey..." and join in. (Kissing, but that does happen out there)

  17. I agree,Arizona could irreparably damage their marriage and relationship forever. Callie was there for her from the beginning, when her leg was amputated and when she got her new leg.she worked with her as her doctor and wife.Callie was supportive in every possible way. What ever Arizona needed Callie was their. But no matter how much Callie was their, she didn't make Arizona feel sexy, good looking?what ever was lacking she should have been trying to work it out with her partner/wife....not getting turned on by someone else...

  18. I would agree but just as Arizona has developed (and in ways, not developed), Callie has as well. It is true that they have internalized a lot, and it was said by Shonda, they've been kept in this bubble since the beginning but Callie is not just in a relationship anymore because she loves love. That was who Callie was when she was with George. And that issue was addressed by Arizona in the season 6 finale, love the idea of being with me, not the idea of being in love. The shooting and Callie's subsequent standing up and getting in between the gunman and Arizona/Ruby moved along that issue and proved to Arizona that Callie could in fact do just that, which told Arizona that revisting the prospect of kids for Callie was something she was willing to do (which brings me to the point that although they have swept things under the rug, they have also given at least a minute to their issues, in some way or another). Callie has been understanding, and chances are, she'll realize they needed a lot more than each other to get through Arizona's PTSD. And they might separate for a while, which is is what excites me for 10th season, revisiting themselves and each other (old problems and this infidelity), but I honestly believe Callie and Arizona have the capacity to eventually work through this. If they do, and earn it (much like Bette and Tina had to some years ago) then I'm good with whatever way they go now. If they don't, I'll either be upset that they weren't strong enough to make it through a traumatic event Between them, although other (straight) couples on the show have made it through, or I'll be happy that we get double the screen time, now with them having separate but (hopefully) more scenes.

  19. Callie is definitely going to care why Arizona cheated. Arizona is her person. She isn't George, who Callie knew was head over heels with Izzie, this is a person she spent the last four years enduring traumatic event after traumatic event. She'll be hurt, and she might leave Arizona, but she'll want to know why she's being put through it first.

  20. Very good review indeed, and yes I too love this couple!
Although the words to describe Arizona's choice to stay in the on-call room, are obviously 'betrayal' and 'cheating', to me it doesn't feel that way. Her action follows her struggle to healing, both mentally and physically. She hasn't felt appreciated, sexy and WANTED for a very long time. What we've witnessed so far is the regaining of intimacy beween Callie and Arizona, but in my opinion, more for the benefit of Callie. Because Callie stated, she had to be 'celibate' for 5 months cause of 'The Leg' (talking 'bout guilt, making your wife feel guilty for something you actually are responsible for...isn't that a bit ugly??) We've never heard Arizona complain of her having no sex or not be able to be intimate with her wife, she just wanted to feel like her old, kick ass, strong and loving adorable self again. So if there's no clear or tangible longing from Callie's side, Arizona obviously is sensitive to the flirtation of this beautiful and hot woman.

But the human mind does tricks, you thought would never happen to you. And maybe, because of Arizona's behaviour after the plane-crash, and Callie, having to deal with loss and grief too, there wasn't any room for both of them to actually process the things that happened and have a real conversation about their feelings, thoughts and their relationship.
After the hardship Arizona's been through, it's very difficult for her to accept herself and see herself as a beautiful person. It all fits in her being the 'control freak', she has to become perfect again and a good man in a storm to see herself as a whole. Then she can let Callie be her wife again, like before. I honestly hope that they will get through the storm. It will involve tears, sadness and it won't be easy. But who ever said life is? ...:-)

  22. You have mentioned 'Arizona was never allowed to loose herself she always had to be the strong one for everyone.' This is what Lauren alludes to when she says you are allowed to loose a little bit of control. I think Lauren understands Arizona way better Callie ever did. That's why I feel that it's better that the story line moves in a direction where Arizona breaks up with Callie and moves on and ahead with Lauren. There definitely is an undeniable chemistry between them and going by Meredith's voice over as Lauren and Arizona met for the first time - "when you get it RIGHT, it can be pretty damn magical". But will Shonda let Arizona walk away with Lauren?

  26. Ironically enough this is not JCapps first lesbian roll. SO for her to come across timid is strange. She seemed very comfortable when she played Nadia on the L Word which requried way more intensity/ passion

  27. I say she might let AZ test the waters with Lauren. Tehn ultimately wether its when the show ends- Calzona will be one again.
Have you ever seen the Tyler Perry movie Why did i get married? In it one of the characters cheats. HIs friends tell him about this rule 80/20. Apparently you will only get 80% of what you need/want in your relationship. If you go off nosying aound someone else thinkin you got the piece you were missing, youll find its only 20%. And you just left 80 for a measley 20. Another way of looking at it is the grass is not always greener on the other side. I think this will be the vein they might explore w/ Callie/AZ/Lauren now. well maybe who knows what tehse writers are planning.

all of that sounds wonderfully deep and well thought out.... but in the end, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Callie isn't going to care WHY Arizona cheated...it'll just be one more spouse who cheated with a tiny blond woman. Callie didn't deserve this....from either of her spouses.
