Community - Season 5 - Dan Harmon was asked by Sony to return

Dan Harmon may be heading back to Greendale.

The creator of Community is in talks with studio Sony Pictures Television to return in some capacity for the series' upcoming fifth season. Details on just what role the former showrunner would have remain unclear.

Harmon broke the news during his Harmontown podcast on Sunday. Harmon told the audience that he has been asked to return to Community, and later asked that his comment be edited out of the podcast, which has not yet been released online.

NBC renewed the Joel McHale starrer May 10, a day after the comedy wrapped its fourth season even year-over-year with its third frame, which was overseen by Harmon. David Guarascio & Moses Port took over this season, with some critics noting Community had lost the edge it had under Harmon.

Following his turbulent run on Community -- which included an unflattering voicemail from Chevy Chase -- Harmon has been vocal about his firing from the show he created. "I would have fired me. Sony was always so bummed out about the way I wrote and thought, they always fantasized about doing the show without me". Harmon also acknowledged the Chase brouhaha during his podcast taping, joking that he would only return if the actor, who exited the show in November, was brought back to the series as well.

A spokesperson for Sony Pictures Television told THR that there was nothing official to report at this time.

For NBC, Harmon's return would help solidify Community, the only returning comedy the network has for 2013-14 besides Parks & Recreation. The series was left off the fall schedule, with a midseason debut once again.

  1. Sounds good. Community is basically Harmon to me, even if he is a jerk.

  2. Very interesting, I look forward to more developments on this. I think it'd be hilarious if Dan came back and made all of Season 4 (which I enjoyed more than other people) a dream in Abed's head with some kind of movie reference to explain his dreams.

If this happens it will be quite the "Fuck You Chevy I win" moment for Harmon.

  4. Well, let's hope it comes to good port! Iwould love to hace all the writers that left coming back too... Chris McKenna knew how to write awesome Jeff/Annie scenes...

I believe S4 wasn't that bad... I was reading an interview about what Dan would make of Season 4 and he said two things "Make the characters go out of Greendale" and "Making Jeff struggle with how a good person he had become, and how that wasn't compatible with his old life... So he would have to choose: His friends or his old life".

I believe those two points were a part of Season 4...

  5. I hope he comes back.... and maybe I´m alone on this, but I want Pierce to stay in season 5.

  6. Season 3 did end with Abed entering his mini-Dreamatorium, so Season 4 could have all taken place in there if the writers so choose.

I enjoyed Season 4 enough and was disappointed by parts of Season 3 enough that I'm neither excited nor dismayed by Harmon's potential return. Maybe the year-long break can get him back to Seasons 1 and 2 levels of quality.

  7. Agreed. Pierce was always the least funny to me so I was fine with Chevy getting the boot.

  8. Pretty awesome if this can really happen! I'm another who did really enjoy season 4 as well, but there's no question Harmon is missed.

  9. I don't think he'll come back in any other position than the showrunner.

  10. Hell yes to this! Last season was so bad.

  11. When they wrote Pierce right, he was wonderful. One of my favorite episodes (well, one of the few I liked, honestly) this season was the Sophie B. Hawkins ep and Pierce was amazing in it. They just didn't know what to do with the character, and I think some of it does extend to Chase being infamous for having a DIVA attitude on sets. They also had little clue what to do with Shirley. That's one thing season four did - give Shirley purpose.

  12. There's talk McKenna was offered the opportunity to return as well.

  13. If they could keep doing eps like the Sophie B Hawkins ones, I'd love to have Pierce stay. But Chase is gone and definitely won't be back.

  14. The closest thing to a mea culpa one will ever get from studio and network execs...

  15. Sorry, my e-mail suddenly decided that Disqus responses were spam. My problem with Pierce is that out of all the characters, he is the most 2-dimensional. He's a stereotype and not a very funny one most of the time.

  16. Awesome. I didn't hear that.

  17. Well... Actually, for me, what Season 4 did to Annie, Season 3 did the same to Britta and Pierce. So, S3 wans't the greatest thing that even happened... I believe it was pretty close to Season 4, with the exception of episodes like Remedial Chaos Theory, Basic Lupine Urology and Virtual System Analisis being the high-mark of the season... But then again, Season 4 only got 13 episodes, so it's a bit unethical to compare them... Just like you said, Season 3 was an 8 and Season 4 a 7... Maybe if the season was of 22 episodes they would make another good episodes like Familial Relationships, Herstory of Dance or Intro To Knots(My Season favourites...)

  18. As long as you admit this was funny, we're all good:

  19. Anyone who didn't think that was funny was comatose. Thanks for the reminder though. I needed to laugh.

  20. If Chase won't come back, I think they should recast Pierce as it would totally fit with the way the show is, and they even kind of already did it in the season 4 premiere.

  21. Ya they have a pretty easy set up to make Season 4 a dream or an imaginary landscape if they so chose, but it'd be even more impressive if they just moved forward while acknowledging the differences of last season subtly or through Abed.

I'm surprised some people have been saying they disliked Season 3 as much as they did. Sure some episodes weren't the best, but I thought it just a notch under Season 1 and 2. Overall I'd rank the seasons as such: Season 1 - 9/10, Season 2 - 9/10, Season 3 - 8/10, and Season 4 - 7/10.

  22. As long as the show works, I'm glad. Chevy is also a jerk, so ... meh. Just bring me the funny!
