The Advocates - Passed over by CBS, to be shopped elsewhere

May 12, 2013

I’ve learned that CBS has passed on high-profile drama pilot The Advocates. The project, written by The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller and directed by David Nutter, starred Mandy Moore and Ben McKenzie as a female lawyer and a male ex-con who team up as “victim advocates,” going to the very edge of the law to right wrongs and fight for the underdog. I hear Warner Bros. TV, which produces the project, will shop it elsewhere.

  1. Probably off to cable then. Surprising that CBS didn't pick it up actually - its the network that the show fits with the best out of the big four

  2. Yes. It seemed like the kind of show CBS usually goes for. Surprising they didn't pick it up. Maybe it's not very good?

  3. Unless I'm mistaken this breaks David Nutters record of having all his pilots picked up to series. Last time I read up on him in like 08 he was 12 for 12 or something. Not gonna look it up right now though since I'm on my phone but I just thought I'd mention it.

  4. Well considering The Mentalist is a success for CBS it's difficult to believe it wasn't very good. Of course there's any number of reasons and we most likely won't know the full story ever but it'll probably now become a massive success on cable and CBS will be pissed. Murphys Law at work

  5. I don't know, it doesn't sound particularly original. It sounds like a standard legal procedural. Unless the cast is good or the show has some solid serialized element to it, the show may not have been that interesting. I guess it depends on what "going to the very edge of the law" means.

  6. Well, given that CBS has the fewest spots to fill, shows that would be a good fit, may be passed over at this network.

  8. Is this the show with Jorge Garcia?

  9. Nope, the show he's in is called 'The Ordained'.
No word if it's going to get picked up or not, yet.

  10. Yes, it's one of the pilot shows that were shown to CBS.

  11. Considering that CBS has done Mentalist a great disservice by sticking it on Sunday night...

  12. Yeah Mandy Moore and Ben McKenzie are the main reason I think it could be targeted for the CW. Also it might be a decent companion for HoD as a show. Lastly the fact that it's produced by Warner kinda lends itself to being shopped at a sister company.

  13. Whoa! A David Nutter pilot that wasn't picked up? I'm kinda shocked...
Why do I get a feeling they might try it out on CW?

  14. I know he has one of the best records, and I can't remember any pilot of his not getting picked up. I can't say for sure if there's ever been a pilot of his that hasn't gone to series, but you are right in saying that at if he does, it sure as hell doesn't happen often...

  15. With the cast it could work well there for sure.
