24 - 13 episode return?

10 May 2013

With Kiefer Sutherland and Fox plotting the return of Jack Bauer, we’re hearing some additional details about the plan.

You already figured this out, but now we can say with certainty: Touch isn’t coming back for a third season. The mystical drama was shifted to Friday nights this season where it struggled in the ratings. Even without a 24 revival, it was considered pretty much dead in the water.

For 24 miniseries/limited series, we’re hearing Fox is actually currently looking at a 13-episode order for the show. For a cable series, that’s actually a full season (heck, for HBO’s Game of Thrones, it’s more than a full season). So that would be a pretty significant potential order to bring back Bauer.

  1. Really not sure about this, didn't like the last season of 24 at all. Sometimes things should be left alone.

  2. First thing I said out loud when I read this? "Oh **** off Fox."
The clue is in the name. There is ZERO point in having a 13 ep season for a show that plays out in real time over the course of a TWENTY-FOUR HOUR DAY. If Fox doesn't give it a 24 ep season, as it requires, I will not be happy. I'll still watch it, but I won't be happy.

  3. Agreed. And it ran for, what, 8 years? I would rather FOX re-develop some of it's early 00's shows, so many had a TON of potential but were ruined by less than stellar execution AND horrible advertising by FOX. At least that seems to be more fulfilling creatively than having a 9th season of a show they had a series finale for already.

  4. X Files next please?

    Fringe?

  5. I guess Jack Bauer is even more efficient now. He no longer needs 24 hours. He can do it in 13.

  6. Yeah it had a good run, it seems silly bringing it back plus Bauer was looking worn out and the situations got so ridiculous.

  7. Oh god, really?? I do not see the point in this at all. But I guess it's sooner than other shows have seen a revival

  8. A way I'd do a miniseries of 24 with less episodes is have 12 episodes. Having each be 2 hours long, but airing once a month for an entire year.

  9. Leave it dead.

  10. Well if everyone had just listened to him the first 8 seasons probably would have been 13!

  11. I might be among the minority here, but I'm sooooo freaking excited to have it get another season. I would prefer a normal 24 episode season, but 12 makes sense too (do like a 12pm to 12am season or something). To be honest, I still feel like the show needed to end with the death of Jack Bauer. Maybe this gives them time to give him closure and let him finally rest in peace. As well as my thoughts about the show.

  12. I don't know if we're in the minority, but you're definitely not alone :)

  14. I heard it was going to be a 12 and not 13 episode mini series return. I am conflicted on this as well. As long as they do it right, it can work. I always knew that they weren't going to make a movie.

  15. I thumbed down only because this is a 24 post and not a Fringe and X-Files post ;) But I understand what you are getting at :)

  16. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, some of these TV executives really MUST be drinking heavily during discussion. 24 is 24. Not 13, not 12, not 14. Not 42. Not freakin 1301739471017497. It's 24. Plain and simple. This is just stupid. I'll watch it because it's Kiefer Sutherland, but by God, do not ruin the good name of 24, FOX!

  17. I like your thinking! I wouldn't mind an additional 13-episode final season of CSI: Miami to wrap things up properly!

  18. The death of Jack Bauer was actually my thoughts as well. 8 seasons of all the crazy sh*t that man went through become unrealistic in my opinion. Having him finally rest in peace in the end would be a realistic way to end the show (whether or not other fans would like it) and would give it a final closure that would not leave it open for this kind of crazy revivals.

  19. Agree. I'll watch it because Jack Bauer is the best damn character ever, but if it doesn't get a 24 ep season, there's a serious problem.

  20. You absolutely nailed. I wanted to post the same thing, but now I don´t need to ;-)

  22. Jack Bauer's story is practically a Shakespearean tragedy. His flaw: his patriotism. He has sacrificed everything for the world, and he himself became the bad guy in the end of Season 8 (still a hero, but def morally gray). In the end, he needed to come to terms with his losses and make his ultimate sacrifice for his country. With that taken from us in hopes of a 24 movie (I still feel like that's the reason for the series finale), I would hope that a 24 renewal would correct that and give us his final goodbye. He needs to secure Kim's position (she's BOUND to be targeted. she is like a terrorist magnet. every time she's in a city, it gets targeted (must we mention her 2 episode arrival in season 5... poor CTU)) and get a final opportunity to save the day. (although I would love a Chloe return, I feel like the series finale gave us that and I would hope that the series focuses on him and Kim, and potentially a Tony or Mandy appearance? :D)

  23. Same! Would love CBS to pull an Unforgettable and do a Summer original run of 13! One can hope! :)

  24. That's exactly what I thought when I saw that headline!

  25. Interesting. But a month is a long time to ask the common audience to remember plot points.

  26. How would they handle the whole real time '24' thing if the order is for 13? 2-seasons for one 24 hour story? Or remove the real time thing and shrink 24 hours to 13 episodes?

  27. Fox has killed some very good shows because of being greedy. Shows are being cancelled because networks want immediate gratification as far as ratings go. Its all about the mighty dollar. Not to say cable has ruined network television.....okay I'll say it, Cable Has Ruined Network Television.
