I stopped watching The Following after the episode where Carroll escaped. I just felt like the writers were doing too much Deus ex machina in favor of Carroll... even fiction has some grounding in reality, this just felt too fictional.
I don't watch Bates Motel (yet?) only Hannibal and The Following, so maybe I'm not being fair, but it's Hannibal for me all the way. The Following is really annoying me, I'm going to keep watching till the end of the season, but I'm not sure if I'm going to tune in for S2. Hannibal on the other hand... Only two episodes in and I'm obsessed. It's gorgeous to look at, I love the characters and the atmosphere.
Possibly, but there's only so much one can take when the bad guy wins every round. It's one thing when you have a classic villain like Moriarty outwitting Sherlock, it's another when you got a hundred people to follow your will and also outsmart the hero.
The Following is Number 1 Hannibal is Number 2 and Bates is number 3 that's my opinion. I watch all 3 and each one is different and the acting on ALL of them is superb!
For me The Following got downhill really, really fast. Hannibal has an intriguing Pilot, and while the second episode bored me a little, it's got a lot of potential. Bates Motel hooked me from the beginning and has had me on the edge of my seat a couple of times, so for now I'm picking the latter.
So far The Following,. I've only seen on ep of Hannibal so its hard to say. Bates Motel,is just so disturbing, but disturbing doesn't make it the best serial killer...
Toss up between Hannibal and Bates Motel, but I have to go with Hannibal because Bates really isn't about him being a serial killer, it's about him before all of that. And even though we haven't seen Lecter kill anybody yet, he is a killer at this point.
I have yet to watch Hannibal and Bates Motel, although I intend to do so during summer, so I can't answer this. But I do watch and love the following, despite the new trend being hating on it. Also, Dexter is one of my favorite shows of all time!
I have not watched Bates Hotel yet, so for me it is Hannibal. I really like the characters and the actors do a great job. The Following got worse in every episode and is now to the point where I don´t want to watch anymore. I want to check out Bates Hotel, but haven´t had the time yet.
Hannibal is really good, but im not going to watch it further, its a bit too psychologically thrilling for me. They could have gone the whole mile with another network like HBO, Showtime.
yeah, I'm gonna finish The Following's first season but I'm not really excited about that show... I'm really only finishing it because I already started, and it's not all bad, it's just not one of those shows that you wanna keep watching.... And I looove Bates Motel and Hannibal !
I feel like the not shown is better than if they'd gone all the way with the gore. Like mushroom garden was better than bloody corpse. And the unsaid cannibalism is creepier than when you are sure--is it pork, is it something else. Your imagination is scarier than anything they could show you.
I haven't watched Bates Motel yet. The Following lost me very quickly with their Poe analysis that I think they stole from a high school paper they still resent getting a C on. I like Hannibal, but I'm not totally enthralled by it yet. I wish the actor for Lecter was more charismatic, and I worry that they won't be smart enough to keep the audience guessing. But right now, it is the best one out there for me.
Hannibal is the best for me, I love the casting, the story-telling and the stunning imaginery, so that one goes first. Next I have to go with the following, even if after episode four the rest weren't as great, I still want to see how they manage to show a good season finale (I would really like to see HOW they would strech the story for a second season, I just do see it possible right now). Bates Motel on the other hand starter sort of interesting to me but it never went up from that point, maybe I'll give it another shot later but for now this is as far as I go.
The idea is interesting and I loved the Paul/Jacob/Emma relationship and I was interested by Joe as a character (more than his antics). Everything else felt so 'okay', not great, just okay. Haven't watched Bates Motel but Hannibal is excellent so far, I recommend it. :)
It got tiresome seeing the "good guys" getting beaten at every turn, they got outsmarted at every turn. I mean, if you don't root for the villains, this show is kinda boring. The whole psychopathic angst angle of the followers was such a turn off as well, urgh, get a hobby that doesn't consist on killing people, I just can't empathy with your whining.
How is a psycho that romanticizes death a "good villain"? Purefoy does deliver a solid performance, but there isn't much more you can do with such a bland motive.
You are right, it's not as bad, but that doesn't mean it is as good. At best we can give it a golden start that says "you tried" And this is just more noticeable when better shows that are in the same niche are of far better quality.
I've stopped at episode one. Too gruesome and overreacted to my taste. I'd still prefer Bates Motel, they're diving in really nice into Norman's Psyche..
That's the reason I don't watch Hannibal, too gruesome in this Cannibalism stuff. And believe me I've seen some really gruesome things in the college and work...
The problem is the Following is a Cult of serial Killers are going at it and you do not know who is a member. Hannibal is a plain serial killer and though his methods are gruesome you know it is just him and you can chase him.
Seeing that there are only but a few shows listed and I haven't seen Bates Motel, I'm gonna say Hannibal has more potential than The Following. I don't despise the The Following, but I agree the season is just very...I don't even know what the show is about anymore. The only reason I'm still watching it is because of Kevin Bacon, but they haven't given him much to work with that is watchable. It was very appealing from the start, but now it is just repetitive. Hannibal already has backstory to work with, and while I only watched 3 episodes, I could see where the season is heading.
I've never seen Bates or Hannibal but I am a big fan of the Following! While I know the writing isn't always perfect and the bad guys get some leeway the show is genuinely entertaining and keeps going to new places and moving forward. If the bad guys didn't win some rounds there wouldn't be a show. Plus Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy are really good, as is the rest of cast.
Hannibal is totally fucking awesome. Has anyone else noticed how much Hugh Dancy looks like a young William Petersen? If you've seen the 1985 masterpiece Manhunter, you know what I mean
Well this whole show is bland. As someone who grew up in the 80's and idolized Kevin Bacon, it pains me to see him waste his talents on such a trite and predictable premise as this show
I really don't understand all the hate towards The Following, I don't think it is as bad as everyone seems to think. Sure it's not great but better than 89% of shows/reality BS that the networks put out every year.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Bates Motel and Hannibal are far, far better than The Following, which is a turgid mess of bad writing and meh-ness.
ReplyDeleteI'm going for Bates Motel. Very impressive so far.
I don't watch Bates Motel or Hannibal, but I can tell you that The Following is very very far from "a turgid mess of bad writing and meh-ness."
ReplyDeleteDexter. I know it's not new but I gotta show it some love.
ReplyDeleteCult.
ReplyDeleteEven if the writing is not generally great you really can't beat James Purefoy as a villain.
ReplyDeleteYep, tough call between Bates Motel and Hannibal. Picked Bates Motel although after a few more episodes Hannibal maybe my new choice ;)
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching The Following after the episode where Carroll escaped. I just felt like the writers were doing too much Deus ex machina in favor of Carroll... even fiction has some grounding in reality, this just felt too fictional.
ReplyDeleteI think you stopped watching too soon
ReplyDeleteHannibal by far is the best and then Bates Motel..
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting much with any of them but Bates Motel has blown me away. It's disturbing on a whole other level from the others.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand The Following, which is awful because I love the actors, and while I like Hannibal, it's not must-see yet.
I don't watch Bates Motel (yet?) only Hannibal and The Following, so maybe I'm not being fair, but it's Hannibal for me all the way. ReplyDeleteGoing with Bates Motel over Hannibal because it's funnier. The Following is terrible.
ReplyDeleteWilliam B. Davis, Michael Emerson, Walton Goggins from 2 shows, John Barrowman, Jack Gleeson, any villain from American Horror Story...
ReplyDeleteThere you go, several villains better than James Purefoy.
Only one I watch of these is bated motel and its incredible!!
ReplyDeleteFor me The Following got downhill really, really fast. Hannibal has an intriguing Pilot, and while the second episode bored me a little, it's got a lot of potential. Bates Motel hooked me from the beginning and has had me on the edge of my seat a couple of times, so for now I'm picking the latter.
ReplyDeleteI really like all three show but my vote went to Hannibal cos every episode so far has left me speechless, it rarely happens when I watch tv.

ReplyDeleteI want to check out Bates Hotel, but haven´t had the time yet.
:-) Love your comment!
ReplyDeleteYou did not stop too soon. It´s the same....maybe even worse. I´m stopping right now. It had it´s chance.
ReplyDeleteHannibal is really good, but im not going to watch it further, its a bit too psychologically thrilling for me. They could have gone the whole mile with another network like HBO, Showtime.

ReplyDeleteThat's your opinion, in my opinion that's exactly what it is. It's genuinely terrible.
ReplyDelete"Best Serial Killer Show."

ReplyDeleteI watch and love all three shows.. damn.
ReplyDeleteAll you had to say was "Going with Bates Motel" -.-
ReplyDeleteWow there is a lot of people hating on The Following.. That show is amazing as well as Bates Motel & Hannibal! So stop writing negative comments!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your hate on The Following. I don't see you writing for a TV show.. -_-
