The Americans - Episode 1.13 - The Colonel - Preview

„The Colonel” proves to be a very strong, fitting finale for the great first season. The FBI hunt is getting close to an end . Philip and Elizabeth, despite their suspicions, prepare for the important meeting and Nina’s fate is to be decided by Moscow.
First, if you’re a fan of Philip and Elizabeth, then there’s definitely a hope for them. Big choices and extreme situations are what brings a lot of people together and we can see that they both still care about each other, even when they can’t quite admit it. Stan, on the other hand, is clearly stuck between the two women in his life and his actions may just cost him both of them. Claudia has a few significant scenes in the episode, where we can see quite a different side of her. The question is: better or worse? Whatever the answer might be, it’s a great opportunity for us to watch the fantastic work done by Margo Martindale.
And then there’s action. A lot of things going on, mostly in the last 15 minutes of the finale, when you just can’t keep your eyes off the screen. At some point, even when you think it’s all over, don’t be so sure of it. Prepare for a few surprises, not necessarily a good ones, but definitely interesting and very entertaining to watch!
Personally, I really enjoyed the finale and I’m very happy the series got a second season, most certainly deserves it. The actors are brilliant, everyone really brings their A-game and the crew are making a great job as well.

Trying to avoid any big spoilers, but I’ll give you a few teasers about the episode.

• Everyone might just be worried about the wrong mission.
• “I want it to be you”
• Claudia has her own personal mission and a new wig.
• “That’s what they always say right before our people die for nothing”
• Somebody has to make at least one crucial choice that can change everything.
• “You’re not going back”
• Someone you don’t expect, gets close to the important discovery.
• “Take them! Take them!”

Any guesses? Share with us in the comments!

Hope you all enjoy watching the season finale of ''The Americans'' at 10 PM EST on FX!

  1. Great preview Justyna! Really looking forward to it! :)

Okay, I might have a few guesses then:

“I want it to be you” - Elizabeth to Philip

“That’s what they always say right before our people die for nothing” - Philip to Claudia

“You’re not going back” - Elizabeth to Philip

“Take them! Take them!” - Claudia talking to KGB operatives about Philip/Elizabeth

Based on the theory that Philip will get a ticket back to Moscow and Elizabeth doesn't want him to leave/doesn't allow him to leave. They want to run (based on the promo of taking the kids to Canada), but Claudia captures them both before they can. End episode.

  3. My guesses:

“I want it to be you” - Elizabeth to Philip
“That’s what they always say right before our people die for nothing” - Philip to Elizabeth
“You’re not going back” - Arkady to Nina?
“Take them! Take them!” - Stan

I am a huge fan of Philip and Elizabeth and was really hoping they were going to finally have a moment in the finale of coming back together, but it sounds like more missed signals without any sort of resolution for the end of the season :(

My guess is maybe one of the kids gets close to discovering something? I think Claudia wants them to go through with the meet, and they're both scared to do so, which is why Elizabeth wants to be the one to do it and get Philip to take the kids to Canada if it goes bad. I'm guessing Philip floats the idea of them simply running first--all four of them together--and abandoning the mission, but we all know Elizabeth can't do that because of her beliefs. So they're forced to go through with it.

  4. 2 and a half ;) out of 4!

I don't really think it's the problem of missed signals with Elizabeth and Philip, more like circumstances are not in their favor. But still... I wouldn't give up hope;) They DO share some very important scenes, especially near the end. Can't really say how they end though.

Also about the meeting, they're also one more option. "Everyone might just be worried about the wrong mission." is the hint ;)

  5. That's okay, I know you can't tell me how they end :). I guess my little shipper heart just doesn't want to be crushed. It's not that I don't think the writers will bring them back together (and apart, and together, and apart) again next season... just that it's so long to wait until next January and I was hoping we would finally see a little bit of payoff from seeing them unhappy for the second half of the season. Thinking about Philip going back to that awful apartment instead of being home with Henry is just sad.

Hmmm... "Everyone might just be worried about the wrong mission." The obvious mission to be worried about is the meeting with the Colonel. So there must then be a second one? In the promo, I think you can see Paige answering a door and Claudia is there--which was a shocker after Philip warned her to stay away from the kids. I wonder how a second mission would get incorporated...

  10. I'm confused about that second mission as well. What the eff is going on??

  11. I can't imagine either... could be lots of things... maybe something with Martha? Or maybe they have to turn around and hand the information off back to Grannie or one of their Russian contacts and that's where things go bad? Or of course it could be something totally new we have no way of guessing. Sounds like a great episode though!
