Looks like they're getting closer to P/E. I doubt they're really going to get caught, but it's exciting to see anyway as the season ramps up towards the end. Looks like we get to see Martha again... at least she kept her clothes on in the last episode...
As an add-on, after watching the promo again, the FBI sketch of Philip and Elizabeth actually looks more like their disguises from "The Clock." I wonder if they will tie in the piece of information Nina got from Arkady in the most recent episode and have her leak that to Stan. The maid at the Weinbergers could certainly give a description as she saw them several times.
Yeah, I couldn't believe they did that. Even if Elizabeth was a mess, Philip was being rational and he should've immediately known that although not kidnapping the guy in the first place would've been better, that ship had sailed and now that he'd seen their faces the only way out of it was to kill him. But I really think those sketches look more like their disguises from the second episode. Plus, did the guy ever really see Philip? At first I thought they were from this blown op, but then Elizabeth's hair was completely different...
Frankly, if I had been in Phillip's shoes, I would have been tempted to strangle Elizabeth when she announced she couldn't go through with it. He pleaded with her to see reason before they kidnapped Patterson, but she wouldn't listen. She never does.
Did he see Phillip? I doubt it. If he did, I doubt Patterson managed to get more than a brief glance of Phillip. He must have heard his voice at some point and realized a man was involved. Or perhaps he just deduced that there was a man there, because he knew Elizabeth couldn't carry him on her own?
Phillip should have finished him off. One way or another, Elizabeth's recklessness is going to come back to bite them both in the a**.
Yup. Sounds like Elizabeth needs to get her head together (and make up with her husband) and stop making rash decisions because she bottles everything inside until she explodes like a crazy person. I agree, I think they're in for it big time because of this mistake.
I think you're absolutely right. They just released the promo pics for next week and she's back. That's even more dangerous, IMHO because Elizabeth was barely disguised there and Philip had his normal hair color and one of his flimsier disguises.
Oh I agree. I don't dislike Martha... I guess I'm just a little tired of seeing her duped and having that take up so much screen time. It's definitely not her fault "Clark" is using her for information... everywhere she's going is exactly where he's leading her, after all. I'm pretty curious to see how they're going to end it so that she doesn't freak out and report him or start sniffing around. "Clark" has her so wrapped around his little finger I could see her developing stalking tendencies.
I realize that Elizabeth loved Zhukov like a father, but her behavior reminded me of a willful angry child having a temper tantrum, lashing out, giving no thought to the consequences of her actions. Perhaps it's because of her upbring or maybe it's the result of the attack, but she seems emotionally stunted and rather immature. She needs to grow-up a bit, start taking responsibility for her actions, and try to think a bit before making any rash decisions. She's self-destructive, It's understandable, but very dangerous in her line of work.
So could I. I keep thinking of Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. I just hope Henry doesn't own a pet rabbit.
I think one of two things will happen with Martha: 1) She'll lose it when "Clark" leaves her, and P/E will have to personally deal with her. 2) She'll go one step too far, Grannie will decide she's a liability, and that will be the end of Martha. Phillip would probably try to spare her life if she stalks him, but Grannie wouldn't think twice about taking care of Martha.
I could just see Martha popping the question and planning a June wedding. I'm kind of surprised she hasn't done it already. It's just such a sad and pathetic situation.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. I think they would try to avoid killing her if only because it will make a big stink down in the FBI and potentially cause more retribution like we've seen with the past few episodes. But if it comes down to it and she's a threat, they'll certainly do it, I'm sure.
I think that is the only thing that will prevent her death if she does turn into a stalker.
>>>>>>>>>> I'm wondering if Clark can make up some story that makes it sympathetic that he has to leave
I hope so. I've been trying to think of similar scenarios, but how he could he explain that he's leaving, and that he absolutely can't take her with him? If he tells her he's being transferred, I think Martha would quit her job and offer to go with him. If he tells her he's married, I definitely think Martha would start stalking "Clark." She'd probably want to know what the "competition" is like, and if Martha sees Elizabeth and his kids, he's screwed. There would always be the fear that one day she'd recognize them and tell Stan all about his neighbor "Clark".
>>>>It'll be cool to see what they do,
Yes, I can't wait to see what solution they come up with. It would have to be one damn good story to successfully get rid of Martha.
I'm wondering how Martha even contacts "Clark". He said in this last episode, "You said you needed to see me right away," so that implies either she can call him, or he calls her daily and then she told him. But then I can't imagine he would give her any real information about where he lives or his real phone number just because like you're saying, it could quickly turn into a stalking situation since his whole deal is to get these women to fall so deeply in love with him that they'll do anything. I kind of wonder if Elizabeth will ever get jealous at any point. Not of Martha, really, but it's different, I think, when he's really seducing them and whispering sweet nothings, rather than what she does, which is more emotionless and over in one night.
Good point! I hadn't even thought about that. Does he have a private line? A beeper, maybe? I know my father had one in the late 80s. Were they in common use in the early 80s?
If (when) they patch up their relationship, I could see Elizabeth becoming jealous of Phillip's valentine ops. Elizabeth wasn't jealous before because she wasn't in love with Phillip. Hopefully, she'll be able to reconcile herself to the fact that Phillip doesn't really have a choice. It's not like he's seeking these women out. Phillip and these women aren't lovers in the true sense. This is one of the few times when a husband could sleep with another woman, tell his wife it was "just sex", and know that he was being completely honest. LOL. Phillip certainly doesn't seem to be enjoying himself with any of them. The sex scenes with Martha and "Clark" are excruciating to watch.
The KGB, basically, has become their pimp. They sell P/E, only they're selling them for info, not money. The difference between Phillip and Elizabeth is that he KNOWS they're being used, and he resents it. That scene in the pilot, when he was listening to the tape of Elizabeth with that guy in the hotel room, the sadness and anger Phillip felt was palpable. Elizabeth, because of her blind devotion to the cause, and her emotional baggage, seems to have little trouble compartmentalizing this part of her life. We may not have seen them yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if she'd had a few long term Martha-type operations in the past. I don't think she would be as bothered by the lies and deception. After all, her relationship with Gregory didn't start as a "true love" - he was a recruit. For her, these operations are just business, and she has successfully managed to suppress her emotions when it comes to "work sex". Remember that scene where she was teasing Phillip about that crazy voluptuous blonde he had to seduce? I didn't get the sense that she was at all jealous or bothered by the situation. I can't see Phillip being able to tease her about the idiots she's forced to seduce. Take that scene where she just shrugged off that bastard whipping her. I don't think she remained calm for Phillip's benefit. She was genuinely unphased by that guy's brutality. Phillip, on the other hand, took one look and her wound and just lost it - the same way he did when he found out she'd been raped, or when that creep came on to Paige.
I suspect that as Elizabeth begins to thaw emotionally, and (hopefully) starts to realize that the KGB has lied to her, that they are using her, it will become more difficult for her to continue compartmentalizing her emotions.
I hope Elizabeth eventually starts to see their life in the KGB for what it is, because I really don't see any other way she and Philip could ever have any sort of happy ending. And even though I understand how she pushes stuff down in her mind as a coping mechanism, it's hard to believe she's still so closed off to the reality of the risks they take and the bleak future ahead if they don't get off this train ride soon. Any mission could leave one of them dead. Think of the scene in the hotel room where they were shooting the assassin and he was firing back at them. Either of them could've easily been taken out with one lucky shot. Or a mission could go bad and they could be captured, and then that's it. It would be hard as a mother, let alone a wife, not to think of that constantly and to have it affect her day to day activities more than it currently seems to.
With or without Phillip, I can't picture a happy ending - or even a halfway decent ending - for Elizabeth, unless she wises up. At times, her worldview seems almost childlike in it's simplicity: USSR = "good" USA = "bad". She views the CIA as ruthless, amoral and criminal, and sometimes it was, but the KGB was little different. Elizabeth's still in a deep state of denial, but she did appear to have a minor breakthrough on that front last week when Patterson, and the memory of Zhukov, forced her to take a good hard look at what she's become. She didn't like what she saw. It also finally seemed to dawn on her that Claudia was deliberately pitting her against Phillip. That gives me a bit of hope.
>>>>>>>it's hard to believe she's still so closed off to the reality of the risks they take and the bleak future ahead if they don't get off this train ride soon.
I don't think she's managed to close herself off entirely from that reality. In other episodes, especially the first two or three, she seemed to have brief moments of clarity. Like that scene where she was discussing Henry and Paige's future, and her fears that Paige was too sensitive, too much like her. She admitted to Phillip that she didn't think Paige would be able to adjust to life in the Soviet Union. So, on some level, she MUST understand that all of their lives - her, Phillip, and their kids - are on the line. Unfortunately, she is also an extremely stubborn person with a rigid worldview, and, so far, she hasn't been the least bit inclined to broaden that worldview. Hopefully, that changes soon!
See, I'm a little worried. I'm hoping the breakthrough last week means we're going to start to see a little growth (especially since we're at the end of the season and it's the right time for it), but we've seen how many instances of Elizabeth making a gesture and having that "moment of clarity" and then going straight back to throwing up walls. I mean, there was the torture episode where she was clearly fumbling and telling Philip it had been a long time since the reporting (for her, an admission of wrong, almost), and then by the end of the episode was so mean to him. And then she wanted to "make it real" at the end of the Irina episode only to yank it back and get a separation the moment she found out Philip lied. So I'm just worried this little hint of progress we thought we saw isn't going to be built upon, or is going to be another one step forward, two steps back sort of thing. That's been realistic, but ultimately isn't very satisfying in terms of seeing if Elizabeth grows or not, so I hope we see something different on Wednesday.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteThat was another big SNAFU. IA that she is probably the person who gives a physical description of P/E- not Patterson.
