Revolution - Will Revolution's Ratings Fall Below 2.0 Tonight??

Since its return from a mammoth 17 week hiatus, NBC's Revolution's ratings have been slipping steadily after 4 episodes of this half of the season, with each episode rating equal or worse to the one that came before it. Last week's episode earned a 2.0 rating and 5.88 million viewers - series lows by comfortable margins. Fortunately for fans, NBC has picked up Revolution for a second season, so the question for this poll is simple: Will tonight's episode sink below the 2.0 rating?

Up against Revolution on ABC is Castle with a widely praised episode titled "Still" on the back of last week's equal season high rated episode, in addition to winning the 10pm Monday timeslot last week, and CBS's Hawaii Five-0 airs a new episode on the back of an equal season low rated episode. Interesting conundrum there. Have your say on which side of the mark Revolution will fall in our poll below, and share your thoughts in the comments. You can see the statistics for Revolution's season so far here

  1. I say No but it wouldn't shock me. Hope for the best

  2. I say yes because unlike last week, H50 is new tonight.

  3. H50 is no competition for the show. Different shows, different audiences.

  4. I voted for 'No', hopefully word of the renewal has spread by now.

  5. I disagree actually. And the fact that H50 had its best ratings of the season during Revolution's hiatus also suggests the opposite. I watch both shows!

  6. Actually renewal has the opposite affect on shows, like Grimm last year that fell to 1.2 (its series low to date) after being renewed.
It also makes sense because if I were a Nielsen watcher and watched 2 shows at a certain timeslot, I'd DVR the one that was already renewed and watch live the one that has yet to be renewed following such announcement.
In Revolution's case, H50 was already renewed too and Castle will definitely be renewed so this ain't a factor. H50 and Castle both being new today though is a factor in its ratings today.

  7. I agree with you... I actually think that the audience of H50 went to Revolution, unlike Castle's but now are slowly returning to the CBS show... By the Season Finale i believe Castle and H50 will tie in ratings(or very close one to another, just like always) and Revolution will drop to 1.8's or so...

It's a shame. The show is good, but NBC(even when they renew it) killed it's rock star by it's own hand with that very long, long hiatus(You can't do that to a serialized show!)

  8. There should be a poll of which show rates better after the Voice: Grimm or Revolution?

  9. I disagree, it's not the hiatus. TWD is a serialized show and Parenthood is a serialized show and both of them had longer examples to name a few, but their ratings didn't fall. Revolution has a lead-in of 4.8-5.0 ratings, that's huge, and the reason why I, and I assume others too, stopped watching it is not the hiatus but the quality.

  10. My Predicts:
    Grimm 2.4
    Revolution 1.9

  11. A 2.4 of Grimm would be a series high. It'll be too good to be true but hopefully, maybe..

  12. No, H50 is new toight but I would consider Castle episode tonight as a rerun

  13. I'm going to say probably, but I'm not worried about it at all since it was renewed and has good DVDR numbers. People ARE watching, they're just watching later.

  14. I also disagree that it was the hiatus that killed it. I think hiatuses are good to serialized shows. If you look at the ratings trajectory, you see that it was already coming down before the hiatus (excluding the bump for the midseason finale). So, saying that it was the hiatus that brought it down does not seem accurate to me. I know this is a popular theory in people's minds but I have yet to be shown an example of a serialized show that was killed by a long hiatus. All the examples that people usually bring up (Flashforward, The Event, etc.) are shows that were already declining before the hiatus.

  15. Yes that would be a great poll. Grimm is also my guess but I am affraid we are all being too optimistic here.

  16. Yes the DVR numbers are a good point. From the numbers we see, it appears that Revolution is the rare example in which DVR numbers actually change the relative position of a show. Hopefully that is also true for C3 numbers (the ones that actually count)

  17. Why? It is a new episode.

  18. I don't think it is that easy to isolate that effect. I understand the arguments for both sides and I am sure that, as you have the Grimm example, someone can come up with an example of a show that increases with the renewal announcement. Reality is probably that there is only a very tiny percentage of the viewers who actually know this sort of renewal stuff, so in most cases it won't make any sort of difference and it is simply the result of the normal ratings fluctuations week to week.

  19. The biggest reason will be the Castle Episode Still!

  20. It'll be far from a rerun for Castle tonight. I for one haven't seen it yet

  21. Castle's three remaining episodes will blow the competition away. They are just that strong.

  22. If it does fall below 2.0 in live viewing it will be made up in the DVR numbers. This show and The Following do exceptionally well after its initial airing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There is a tiny percentage of viewers who are Nielsen families too and I think that if I were a Nielsen family, I would check and be more familair with show's ratings and renewals, due to being given that responsibility. JMO.

  24. Apparently it was already aired in Europe (I don't watch Castle but that's what I heard)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also disagree, as I watch both shows. Just have to watch one on recording and one live.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I certainly hope not! From the sneak peeks, it looks like this episode is going to be good! Miles and Monroe are facing off for the first time since the midseason finale and it seems both Charlie and Aaron will experience some character growth.

  27. The Canadian station showing The Following actually uses DVR/PVR in its promotion: their tag line for the show is "Set your DVR now!" Can't say I understand this show's popularity very well, though, given that most of the characters are amazingly dumb.

  28. The thing here is that you're comparing a 24 episodes serialized-show with a 10/13 episodes show.
I always tought(And said here, always) that Revolution would work better with a shorter Season. The writers could tell the story without detours.
The thing with a show like Game of Thrones, Shameless US, etc is that showrunners doesn't have the need to make up shit to put on the middle. You got a 10 episodes run that ends on a very high note, without unnecesary storytelling.

This is what i think about all network serialized TV Shows, not just Revolution. Fringe went down when they serialized it(Remember when it was a procedural?) on the second Season. The final one was a compact one, they had 13 episodes to go from point A to point B.

For me, it should be: Serialized Shows of 10/13 episodes and procedurals of 22/24 episodes.
