NBC ANNOUNCES FIVE DRAMA SERIES RENEWALS FOR NEXT SEASON

Dramas "Revolution," "Chicago Fire," "Parenthood," "Grimm" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" All Returning for 2013-14 Slate

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - April 26, 2013 - NBC has announced the renewal of five key drama series for the 2013-14 season: "Revolution," "Chicago Fire," "Parenthood," "Grimm" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

All have been given 22-episode orders.

The announcement was made by Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment.

"On the verge of our 2013 fall scheduling decisions, we're pleased to renew five drama series that will be important to our new season line-up," Salke said. "We're proud and very appreciative of all of the actors, producers, writers and directors who work so hard to deliver such high-quality work week in and week out. These complex shows represent a broad range of genres and tones, and all of them stand out for us in a television landscape now filled with one-hour series. We're especially pleased to be renewing "Revolution" and "Chicago Fire" - two first-season successes - and there will be more returning series announcements made in the next couple of weeks."

"Revolution," the Monday night drama that centers on a family trying to reunite amidst a worldwide power failure, is executive produced by Eric Kripke, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk ("Lost," "Star Trek"). The series is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions, Kripke Enterprises and Warner Bros. Television.

"Revolution" is the season's top-rated drama on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and top-rated new series among those networks in adults 18-49, scoring a 4.6 rating, 12 share and 11.8 million viewers overall in "most current" averages for the season to date. "Revolution" has teamed with "The Voice" to help improve NBC's Mondays this season versus last by 24 percent in 18-49 (with a 3.6 rating vs. a 2.9).

"Chicago Fire," from Emmy Award-winning executive producer Dick Wolf and creators Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, goes inside a Windy City firehouse and the lives of those who engage in one of our nation's noblest professions.

In addition to Wolf, Haas and Brandt, executive producers also include Matt Olmstead, Joe Chappelle, Danielle Gelber and Peter Jankowski. The series is produced by Universal Television and Wolf Films.

"Chicago Fire" has topped its premiere audience of 6.6 million persons a total of eight times this season, and the only other new drama on the broadcast networks to have done it even once this season is NBC's "Hannibal." "Chicago Fire" originals have improved the time period versus year-ago results by 24 percent ("live plus same day").

"Parenthood," adapted from the 1989 feature film, examines the colorful Braverman family, and all its foibles and triumphs. The series is executive produced by Oscar winners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer ("A Beautiful Mind," "Frost/Nixon"), Emmy winner Jason Katims ("Friday Night Lights") and Lawrence Trilling ("Pushing Daisies"). The series is produced by Universal Television and Imagine Entertainment.

"Parenthood" grew this season versus last by 8 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.8 rating from a 2.6) and also increased by 8 percent year-to-year in total viewers (7.1 million vs. 6.6 million). This season's last seven "Parenthood" telecasts beat both the ABC and CBS drama competition in the time period in 18-49.

"Grimm," inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, is a Universal Television and Hazy Mills production. The series was created by Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf. Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner and Norberto Barba also serve as executive producers along with Greenwalt and Kouf.

"Grimm" is Friday's #1 series in adults 18-49 and is up versus one year ago by 14 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 2.4 vs. the year-ago 2.1, "most current") and is up 12 percent in total viewers (6.9 million vs. 5.2 million).

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" will enter its 15th season for NBC. The series chronicles the life and crimes of the Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department, an elite squad of detectives who investigate sexually based crimes.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is a Wolf Films production in association with Universal Television. Dick Wolf is creator and executive producer. Warren Leight, Julie Martin and Peter Jankowski are also executive producers.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" originals this season have improved the time period versus year-ago results by 70 percent in adults 18-49 ("live plus same day") and are building on the time slot's lead-in by 31 percent in 18-49 and 70 percent in total viewers.

    YAY for Grimm.

  2. They were all absolutely certain things. Good to see NBC renewing all of
its core 5 dramas before thinking of comedies. Parenthood finally got
its 22 episode order, and so did Revolution apparently! Personally, I am very happy for Grimm, Revolution and Chicago Fire!

  3. Good news! I was sceptical about Revolution the first episodes but I think they're getting better. This show has much potential and I like watching it. :)

  4. Grimm is the one drama on NBC that I care about so with that show renewed I'm all set.

    ReplyDelete
  5. LOL, Revolution will drop so low by the time those 22 episodes air, I see it being moved to Saturday like Smash next year.
I'm glad Grimm got renewed and I think I'll start watching Parenthood this summer.

  6. Go Revolution! You have been put through the ringer but still bounced back!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Optimist moment: Yay, Revolution! Pessimist moment: So, if Revolution took a 17 week hiatus and didn't massively crash, does that mean NBC is going to do it AGAIN next season?

    Yay for Grimm and Revolution!!!

  9. Woo hoo Grimm. It was never in doubt but it feels good to celebrate 22 more episodes. Also very happy for Kripke with Revolution picked up for a second season. I go where you go Kripke.

  10. YAY for Revolution & Grimm!!!!!!!

  11. They are almost certain to give it a direct or indirect voice lead-in next year (mondays or tuesdays spot I mean), so it will almost certainly be able to get decent numbers. Also, I have to say that even though its numbers are very low at the moment, it has DVR gains that are way higher than other shows in % terms, which is the exception to the trend. This suggests that it may actually rank higher in C3 numbers (the ones that actually count) than we think

  12. Talk about loyalty ;)

    ReplyDelete
  13. While it is possible Revolution will fall dramatically I would not bet on it. After all NBC has the winter Olympics next year and that worked well for NBC last time.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm happy for Grimm and Revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Me too. I don't watch much NBC anymore but Grimm is a highlight of my TV watching each week.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Agreed. The rumors of Revolution's impending ratings demise seem far fetched at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am very glad Grimm was renewed.:-)

  18. Kripke is a show runner after my own heart. He believes in answers and generally not overplaying and drawing out the questions until I think no one knows where the show is heading. I admire that about him so every show he's involved with gets extra innings from me instead of my usual 3 episodes and you're out. Still I must admit that early Charlie tried that loyalty something fierce.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There are a handful of NBC comedies I watch but Grimm is the only drama and it's also usually a highlight of my TV viewing week as well. NBC has a few pilots that seem as though they have potential but I'll have to wait and see if NBC orders them to series next month.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I wasn't saying it was a bad thing, just the opposite! Props to him for making such loyal fans!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, good! Don't have to worry about Revolution (which I figured would get a second season anyways, as it's still good in comparison to other TV shows they have had and the DVDR numbers are pretty high!)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes. It should be doing way better than it is, and being beaten by Castle with the lousy DWTS lead in while it was the huge voice lead in all for yourself is terrible, but the thing is that this terrible is still pretty good when we look at the overall network, so it is not like it is in some big troubles at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good question! I personally would rather have 10 and 10 straight with a big hiatus, then all of this mini breaks and a winter break. I think it's probably better for the writers too!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think they will give the Voice will lead-out to new shows next year, just like it did this year. I can't see Revolution maintaining The Voice's lead-in next year.

    ReplyDelete
  25. He still had to compromise his plot with Bad Robot and It still have BR's production values and piecemeal feel, but I do agree that he is doing a great job and that we have been getting a lot of info on a regular basis, as opposed to really sweating it out like in other Bad Robot works. I think it's a very good fit and I'm glad they collaborated and brought very loyal fans of both sides together! :)

  26. Revolution! Awesome show!

    ReplyDelete
  27. YESSSSSSSSSSSS Revolution and Chicago Fire!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. So happy for Revolution! It's getting better and better every episode. Love Billy Burke's portrayal of badass Miles Matheson. It's so nice to see a show that isn't a whodunnit/cop show or talent competition. Keep it up Kripke!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't see as many nods to Bad Robot as you do and I doubt JJ Abrams has much to do with the show now since he rarely does. For me it has a very Kripke feel; we aren't even to the end of season 1 and we have answers that most genre shows wouldn't have given us for years. That's a Kripke trademark and the reason I will follow him more than any other person in TV. Well except Mark Sheppard. I love seeing Mark Sheppard. :-P

    ReplyDelete
  30. My money is Revolution will air after Olympics exactly what they did with Grimm and here we are with Grimm moving on to year 3 :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I didn't take it as bad but thought I should explain myself more thoroughly. I rarely only have 2 line answers so I was elaborating in the response instead of hitting the edit button for the original comment. Sorry. I am rarely concise and I wanted to extol the virtues of Kripke. I hope he has many more series in his future.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yay for Grimm, Revolution, and Parenthood! (Really happy Parenthood has been renewed for a full 22 episode season!)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I watch Hannibal too but it is getting so slow that I probably won't finish it. The visuals is it are superb but I'm really not into dreamy meandering through blood and guts. As for the comedies, I watch Community and Go On which are both a toss up at this point and neither of which involves me as much as Grimm. I haven't kept track of NBC pilots the way I have the CW so I'm hoping for some pleasant surprises.

    ReplyDelete
  34. As I'm sure there are with Supernatural, there are a lot of Bad Robot (especially LOST) references, riffs, and juxtapositions, as 4 of the characters are Bad Robot actors (2 very minor guess stars from FRINGE are main cast here, another trade mark of BR and of course MP shares both worlds).

J.J. is often "not in the room", but he does often send lots of NOTES (even to the cast)and I'm sure he has "middle men". I'm in no way saying that Kripke signature isn't here, but rather since B. R has SO many works behind them, I can still see the BR in it as well. (Which it should since BR is footing the bill)

Just like Person of Interest, I feel fairly certain that viewers get the best of both iconic writers/producers involved)

    ReplyDelete
  35. GRIMM!!!!! Then a calm came over the room, and she knew, all was well n the world again... hehe

    ReplyDelete
  36. Grimm and Parenthood have been the shows on NBC for a while, so....yay!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I see them going on hiatus in December. Coming back for 3 weeks in January and then taking a month off for the winter Olympics. However, if they don't come back in January then yes, it will be a long winter hiatus next year.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Personally, I would put Believe Tuesdays at 9 and Revolution Tuesdays at 10. That way, it would still have an indirect voice lead-on and Believe (fueled by the voice itself) should pretty compatible, since both are from JJ Abrams. Also, the voice or revolution could have a 2 hour premiere, so that the later could enjoy the direct voice lead-in on its return night

    ReplyDelete
  39. That is great of you. I will re-take my supernatural watch this summer. Not sure if you remember but I actually started at the end of last summer and watched half of the first season. I don't have the time during regular season to continue to though because it is just impossible to watch all my regular shows already, but in summer I will definitely return to it because I was enjoying what I was seeing!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't know about you but I'm never as invested in comedies as I am with the hour-long fare. As for the pilots, if you ever want a quick run-through of all the pilots in contention at the networks, I suggest using the development watch at The Futon Critic website. All the pilots are grouped by network and divided into comedy and drama. Each pilot rundown gives you a list of producers for the potential show, actors cast in the pilot, and a summary of what the potential series is about. It's very easy to navigate. Here's a link:

  41. Hey, that's cool. None of them were really in danger, though.

Very happy that Parenthood season 5 will have 22 episodes. Since 2010, it felt like NBC never really believed in the show, and had truncated seasons (18 eps for season 3 (after a 2-episode extension) and 15 eps for season 4) in the hopes of finding a more successful mid-season replacement, and it never did. Meanwhile Parenthood became the steady performer that it is, and possibly Emmy winner this fall (well, some of the cast will definitely get nominated apparently, and given how much cable is blocking network dramas from nominations for the past few years, it's an accomplishment in itself).

Now renew Community, Go On, Parks & Rec and Hannibal, NBC, otherwise I'll be very sad !

Btw, I've read today that Hannibal is an international co-production. Gaumont had secured money from other countries before the show was even ordered, so it's cheaper for NBC. Given the praise it's getting from audience and critics alike and the bullshit they're doing (taking out episode 1.04, putting pieces of it online the day they air episode 1.05), they should renew it for another 13 episodes, as it was planned by Fuller in the case of a renewal (it won't get a full 22-episode order, and that's okay, quality prevails, filling the schedule does not).

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yea for SVU

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yay for SVU! I love love love that show! Couldn't be happier about this! & I like Chicago fire too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. And I doubt they'll move Revolution to midseason like they did Smash, tbh. I don't know why people keep comparing the two!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now I just need renewals for Parks and Recreation and Hannibal. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. How can you compare these two shows, they are completely different genres. And why get so much joy out of seeing a show not do well?

    ReplyDelete
  47. It will still fall then, it retained about 40% of The Voice's demo and it won't retain the full lead-in of Believe or any other show aired before it either.

    ReplyDelete
  48. People compare between the two because both enjoyed The Voice's lead-in and both failed miserably to retain it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I watched 10 episodes of Revolution because of Kripke and that was more than enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I too prefer the big hiatus. However, how big is big is debatable. This year, they started two episodes ahead of regular season, which they wouldn't need to do next year, so they could finish in mid December instead of November like last year with that alone. Also, they could come back in early March instead of very late March, right after the Olympics, instead of having it run into the summer. It is achievable easily, especially if they order a complete 22 episode season, instead of the odd 20 episode order they got this year. Just taking January and February off (along with half December) certainly sounds a lot more reasonable than the entire December, January, February and almost March like they did this year.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is actually impossible that they do it now seeing as Revolution got a 22 episode order so it wouldn't have time to air if it got scheduled for midseason.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hell yeah! Parenthood renewed for 22 (!!!) episodes - my day couldn't get any better. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. That's too bad,i don't know what they did over hiatus but the show is very good now..

    ReplyDelete
  54. Best News All Day ESPECIALLY TO PARENTHOOD! To make things better, it was renewed for a full season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 88 Episodes is the minimum for syndication from my understanding and by next year, it would've had 90 episodes in its whole run!!!!!!!!! NBC, you made the best decision to renew Parenthood! Thank you so much!!! It means a lot to me!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm happy that Grimm is getting a 3rd season. I love the show. Nice to see Revolution get another season and SVU. I'm hoping that Community and Parks and Recs will be renewed too

    ReplyDelete
  56. That sounds good to me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. i agree, i wasn't expecting 22 episodes this is great.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yay for Grimm, unfortunately I'm not really feeling post-hiatus!Revolution, hopefully my opinion will change by the end of the season.

Now I have to live in dread for Hannibal.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Revolution is the only drama I watch on NBC, and although flawed at times, it also has room for improvement, so I'm looking forward for S2!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Am I the only one that is not happy? Revolution is lame for me, I have already given up (although I might watch lastest episodes because of the answers). NBC could air better shows.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I wish they'd let him run free. Some things feel forced in there that don't belong and those are generally the things that remind me of Lost (unfavorably) like Elizabeth Mitchell.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Awe, Ivy, you just need to ignore all the romance stuff and you'll enjoy Revolution. Besides have you noticed the the descriptions in the press releases often seem to differ from what actually gets aired?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Gizzi! I haven't seen the last episode yet, was it good? I'm definitely sticking to the end of the season, because I still love 80% of the characters and the universe they've created (and they're expanding!). But it depends where they end this season on what I feel regarding S2 and which direction I'm hoping it takes.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I enjoyed the last episode but I don't think it was as good as the others since the show returned. It seemed sort of transitional to me in that it further sets up the revolution theme of the title. You'll see what I mean when you finally pin your brother down and watch it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I saw it! It's kinda funny, cause I had the opposite reaction- I enjoyed it MORE than the last few, since the show came back. No love triangles, no Jason, Miles was grumpy "I'm a bad person and hurt everyone" Miles and I FLOVED President Foster (as long as the "what you did to me" doesn't mean she's another one of his exes). Nora and Aaron continued to be pointless, but that's consistant. I also loved Rachel's scenes with Jane.

    ReplyDelete
  66. What's with one disagreeing must be a hater... Sorry haters you don't like it move on and find another show, constantly harping over and over again about a show one doesn't even watch is crazy....
    SVU is here to stay!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love how people disagree with this,,, Haters need to grow up the world doesn't revolve around them.. For a show they don't even watch, why they feel a need to constantly put down this show is crazy.. Can't they move on...

    ReplyDelete
  68. I could do without Rachel as well. That definitely felt like a JJ casting directive.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Comedies rarely pull me in like dramas either. They don't have enough time I think. Thanks for the link.

    ReplyDelete
  70. best news ever!!!! Great renewal choices!

    ReplyDelete
  71. i am thrilled to hear this as I was worried about Chicago Fire. Revolution continues to surprise me and I really hope NBC doesn't screw it up. They usually do, but I am having hopes of a good second season for them both. Looks like CF will be all about Hailey and Revolution will be about Monroe's lost son.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yay for Revolution and Grimm!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Sighs only NBC drama I care for is the one that will probably be cancelled (Hannibal) kind of happy for Parenthood though as I know it has a steady fanbase and just keeps on fighting for each season.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Well done, NBC!

Finally you did something right! :D

    ReplyDelete
  75. I would also bet on Parks and Community. Parks is a sure thing. Community is more bubblish, but I would also go in the likely renewal direction

    ReplyDelete
  76. Why would someone dislike this?! So rude. Anyway, Parks is a sure thing. Hannibal is not looking too bright I am afraid, it is a bubble show at best.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think there are people who must have disliked things I said in the past because you'd be surprised at some of the things people down vote. Ha oh well. but I know Hannibal looks unlikely but it's by far the most compelling show NBC has.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I find it really immature. Anyway, as for Hannibal, I have never watched it. It is not that I am not interested or that I don't believe you in terms of it being compelling, but I have been burned way too many times with new shows. Nowadays, I only start watching when I am relatively confident that they will get renewed, especially when it comes to shows that premiere this late in the season. I wish you Hannibal fans luck though. If it works out, I will give it a try!
