Best drama on NBC by far. Rather than try to regain their pure numbers I think NBC would be best trying to pioneer broadcast TV and settle for great critically acclaimed shows with ratings only a little above cable considered satisfactory, otherwise all the good shows NBC has will be considered failures.
That most likely won't happen though, so my fingers are crossed that at the very least Hannibal gets better ratings than Do No Harm and Awake and Prime Suspect.
It was certainly worth my time! The tone was quite right, the score made me tense, Hugh Dancy was very convincing, Fishburne was a great boss, and Mads... Oh, Mads... You already scared the hell out of me when you played Le Chiffre. Your Hannibal is simply... epic! :)
I've seen people complain the show is all about Graham and that Hannibal didn't have enough screen time. But honestly, I think it was quite right. Lecter is known for being a classy and discreet gentleman son of a b*tch. And even on the novels and movies he is not exactly the center-piece. Even though he is the title character this time, I guess they simply had to introduce us to Graham and Company, while showing tidbits of his true self.
There were only two things that bothered me:
1) The aspirins. Is Will Graham the new Dr. House? What were they thinking?? 2) In the end of the episode, Graham didn't seem not even close to the shock the character felt after the Hobbs scene in the book Red Dragon. Seriously, he was hospitalized for a month in the psychiatric ward, but in "Hannibal", he seemed ok at the hospital a few hours later.
Besides that, i don't care what people say about death slot or NBC. I'm already a fan of the the show. :)
Any time there's a Sherlock Holmes type character created, a genius detective, writers usually need to bring the character down to earth in other ways. The usual way to do this is to give them a social disorder, make them addicted to drugs, etc. Holmes himself is always portrayed as a socially deficient drug addict. House was an injured drug addict, Gil Grissom from CSI was socially awkward and and everyone considered him a little off, Robert Goren from Criminal Intent was implied to be losing his mind and was eventually plagued by the realization that he was the son of a serial killer, Adrian Monk of Monk was obsessive compulsive to an extreme. Graham is another Sherlock Holmes type, gotta expect drugs to be introduced.
I really liked it, in fact I would go as far as to say I loved it. However, I can see why it is going to completely flop, it is way too subtle, not really the correct word but its not flashy like The Following, It takes its time, has a dream like quality to it. Beautifully filmed and Hugh Dancy really impressed me.
there is no need to be mean about someone else's opinion. not everyone has to love Hannibal, and the fact that someone thought that the show was a little too disturbing is actually very interesting, it means Hannibal is doing it's job well
Except you can bet they're going to be inspired by the book rather than keep to it. My impression of Graham from the book was before Crawford draws him back to catch Dolarhyde he had been a haunted man afraid of his own mind. And I thought they did more than just imply Graham had been drinking.
Anyway, my point with the pill popping was just to say it is something expected from the writers.
It is quite odd that the best new series premiere came in April! XD Great film making. A talented cast given good dialog all wrapped in good writing, cinematography and direction. Simply superb.
Still dissecting it a bit LOL ...I think I like it but I will have to have a few more tastings....I will tell say this the conversations between Hannibal and Graham...very eerie and spooky. Mr Fishburne please remove that hair from your chin....it's annoying and BTW I love you Mr Fishburne (Morpheus) That last scene in the hospital Hannibal sleeping holding the girls hand....Graham sitting on the other side...vvery freaking interesting. I can't help but think of Hannibal's Rising(which I LOVED) where we learn how Dr Lechter's life was formed as a child....his precious little sister.....just a horrible thing....chilling.
I had my doubts about this show on NBC, but it was as good as I had hoped for. Great cast, though it was a little strange for me to see Mads Mikkelsen in an american TV show. I´m so use to seeing him in danish films. He did a good job though and I´ll get use to it.
Though your comment was quite funny, I do believe everybody is entitled to their own opinions. Some people simply can't stand too much violence/gore. I myself can't stand poorly written drama.
As far as pilots go, this one was pretty good. The pilots of shows you think are really promising, they never really live up to the expectations because you can't possibly stuff everything you can say about a show in the pilot episode - and if you can, you don't really have a good show on your hands. But a good pilot tries to expose the premiere audience to the potential of the show and Hannibal did exactly that. It introduces everything that will become part of the show's blueprint going forward. Even though it does not seem like it, there were a lot of things going on in the pilot and I think the show will probably take the foot off the pedal a little starting from the next episode (well, as much as it can, really; the season is 13 episodes long) and savors it's brilliant moments a little bit more, which will actually be a good thing. Looking forward to the rest of the season. I hope it doesn't disappoint.
True, in fact pilot episodes often to tend to have a different style than the rest of the show after a season or so. Like a lot of people drawn to this show I was a huge fan of the Thomas Harris novels when I was younger (except Hannibal Rising, I see that as a throwaway), so I had my own visuals of what it should be even before seeing the movies. Anyway, I thought they treated the characters with a great deal more finesse than I thought they would.
Though you're right, hard to really judge a show by its pilot... gotta go episode by episode.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
What disturbing images. Never seen anything quite like this before. Not bad, but not really my cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteIt was actually a lot better than I thought it would be.

I wasn't overly impressed, thought it was a bit dull and simplistic. But I will stick with it for now to see if Gillian Anderson changes the dynamic.
ReplyDeleteSome very intelligent writing in the scenes between Graham and Lecter. Definitely like it so far.
ReplyDeletebrutal, but very good. Fingers crossed for the ratings

ReplyDeleteThen why are you wasting everyone's time by posting this? Go back to 90210, BatB and other supreme shows. ;)

ReplyDeleteThere should be an "I don't know what to think " option.
ReplyDeleteNot really. He's not a drug addict in the book, nor in the movie.

It definitley blew my mind away! Dark and brilliant, I don't know what to expect but I'm definitley loooking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteBrillian show..and i have a feeling it's going to become even better. Definitely the best drama on NBC!!
