Awesome - my only gripe is that the Astapor scene was so amazing that it deserved more build up. It could have done with a short scene earlier in the episode where she's chaining Drogon up and arguing with Jorah and Barristan, just to make the shock of Dracarys that much better.
This season is getting better and better with every episode!
-Seriously, Jaime's and Brienne's arc is amazing. Nikolaj is amazing! -I'm so impressed by Alfie Allen's performance as Theon! I think he is one of my fav characters. -That fight in Craster's keep was just incredble. -Damn. One week to see the fight between S&B. -As always, Daenery's scenes were amazing!! -Also loved all scenes in King's Landing.
I'm sure most will call this episode the best of the season and it was incredible indeed. I do find Dany's rc a bit repetetive, but the massacre at Astapor was powerful and well-done!
Something about how the Night's Watch mutiny went down did not sit right with me honestly. Maybe the inactivity of every NW as Rast as whoever Burn Gorman's character is went about their work. Grenn was the first to act, from the other side of the roon, despite being a relatively new member. It seemed odd none of the veterans even flinched at killing Craster or protecting Mormont after. *shrug*
Loved the scene with Varys and his old foe! I wonder where that is going as it is all new to the series!
Loved Tywin dressing down Queen Bitch Cersei, erm excuse me, Queen Regent Bitch Cersei! Nice of him to inform her of the reality that she is quite possibly the worst player in the game! XD
I'm losing interest in the Theon arc this year honestly. I preferred how it was in the books, off screen. I know it needs to be shown in the series, but torture is just not something I want to watch and I think that the fewer scenes the better. One or two scenes carry power and weight, but each scene after deludes the impact.
If there is any justice or legitimacy to the USD "Scene of the Week" poll the Massacre at Astapor will win by a landslide!
Now off to watch episode extras and supplemental videos before re-watching the episode! XD
Awesome episode, so good that it reminded me of how the episodes in Season 1 played out.er. -I love how Varys is trying to plot against Littlefinger. He knows Littlefinger is dangerous and can even be his better. I don't doubt Littlefinger has a hidden plan. -RIP Jeor Mormont. He went down with fury. Too bad Jorah will not hear about this anytime soon. -I love Natalie Dormer as Margaery. -I hate Theon's scenes, probably because I hate him. -I love the Arya storyline, especially her interaction with the BWB. Beric Dondarrion is awesome. -Loved Daenerys' game changer. She has proven to be smarter than she looks. Kudos!
Loved the final image. I strongly suggest no on play poker with Daenerys. I figure she knew every insulting word that guy was saying. :-) Thought it was an awesome episode. I'm a little confused by what's going on with the watch. My best friend, who has read the books (I have not), says there was a battle that took place off screen and I didn't miss an episode but I still feel like I missed something.
The white walkers we saw at the very end of Season 2 attacked and decimated the Night's Watch on the Fist of the First Men, then the survivors had to flee and take shelter on Craster's Keep in order to heal the wounded before they could resume the return to the Wall. And then, well, you now know what happened.
LAst season ended with Sam surrounded by thw wight army of the White Walkers if you recall....
This season started off with a silent black screen with the noises of battle, and the sam coming out alone to find the corpse and be attacked by the wight before being saved by Ghost and the surviving NW. The small group we saw rescue Sam is all that survived of the 300+ NW that went out beyond the Wall last year.
Rast (short and lumpy discontent) and the Burn Gorman character have mutinied and killed Craster and Mormont.
WOW!....... just an ep that is so jammed packed with soooo much awesomeness! From the big moments to the small, the best ep of the season thus far........
Dayummmm... Daenerys is BACK. I absolutely loved her scene at the end. I had a ridiculous smile on the entire time haha. And I can't remember Margaery's mother(?)'s name for the life of me, but man does she entertain me.
Daenerys was amazing as allways, I think she should win the Iron throne, I don't see any other character to be better for the job. I would thou like her to give Robb the leaddership of the North, that would be my perfect ending.
I think their is/ was an Allnys related to the Greyjoys somehow if I recall.... but I cannot think of an Alanna. It does sound like a Tyrell name though since we know Olenna is the matriarch and Alerie Hightower is Magaery's mom.
I have been blessed with a pretty good memory for some things, but it gets me in trouble since I cannot use the age-old "Oh, I forgot" excuse for anything with people that know me very well! XD
I think someone did that on Westeros.com, or something similar at least.. Here is that list. http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/List_of_Characters
Oh my God! Danny was so great!!! I just love her. Revealing to the slave trader she always understood him (I bet he regretted calling her whore and bitch). And then letting the dragon kill him. Perfect. Although I must say that it wasn't fair for her to offer the men freedom, giving them the possibility to leave. These men don't know the meaning of the word freedom. They couldn't survive on their own. I felt almost (just almost) sorry for Cersie when she was talking to her father. He said he doesn't trust her cause she's not as smart as she thinks, not because she's a woman. She is smart. She only couldn't manipulate Joffrey, cause she spoiled him his entire life. I think Tywin sees both (Cersei being a woman and being "stupid") as problem. I also wonder why he isn't trying harder to find Jamie. After all, isn't he his perfect child? Cersei is a woman (so worth nothing if he can't get her a good husband) and Tyrion, although the smartest is a dwarf (and he calls him a bastard, saying he isn’t his son). Jamie should be his perfect and most precious child, but he doesn't seem to care. He probably just doesn't show it. Or, he really is that emotionless that he doesn't care. Did I mention how much I like Margaerys Grandma? "Another rose. How boring" "You're here to seduce me?" She's so cool. I love her. Hard to believe I would ever feel sorry for Jamie. But I do. Was it really horse piss they gave him? Disgusting! And I also bet he misses the times when he was Robbs prisoner. I think, right now, he would gladly return. Margaery is good. Making her a queen is a waste. She should be PR manager. Theon still doesn't get how lucky he was to be with the Starks. Ha-Ha, he's back in the torture chamber. I'm so glad someone finally killed the "daughter fucking wildling bastard". He had it coming. The Night Watch killing each other was insane.
I don't think Varys is any better than Littlefinger when it comes to lies, betrayal and conspiracy. I think they both have their own agendas. Danny was awesome today. Her best performance in S3 so far. I want a dragon!!!
Yes, I too found the NW massacre weird. I hoped someone would kill that wildling. But that they killed each other came out of nowhere. "Queen Bitch Cersei, erm excuse me, Queen Regent Bitch Cersei" LOL I'm still confused about Theon. Robb made a deal with the men who came with Theon. They were allowed to leave, but Theon had to stay. Suddenly he's someones prisoner. How did he even get there? I thought, his (former) men would tie him up and leave him at Winterfell for Robb to collect. There is a peace missing.
I also was somewhat surprised about Beric's somewhat "healthy" look in a scene when I spoiled myself with the "new people" trailer they released after Ep. 1, but when the actor was in interview mode, he had a deep scar around his neck which wasn't visible in the scene, so I guess we'll see some more of that =)
(Btw haven't watched this episode yet, so dunno if he already appeared with his neck scars here.)
Although, I'm not sure they mentioned her nickname in the series yet have they?
In the books we learn of the nickname as Sansa and Loras walk down the hall towards Sansa's first meeting with QoT, but they cut that in that episode at least.
Queen of Thorns is just such a clever nickname for the sharp and pointy-witted matriarch of a house whose symbol is a flower! XD Plus, it's just so much easier to remember than Olenna Redwyne!
Theon's situation will be explained or revealed as the season goes on so I don't want to spoil anything too major for you. One piece to the puzzle is missing and that will be revealed later I'm sure. XD
I think it comes from being a waiter and bartender for years. People tip better if they think you remember their name because you like them! XD Shhhhhh...
The cave is dark and full of shadows.... so it was not clear that he was as beat up as he was in the books. I know post battle his state will be revealed though. I guess they want one big pay-off scene compared to slow playing it.
Two things strike me after a re-watch of the episode....
First, I find so odd that not a single comment about Dany being outright cruel and uncaring, dare I say tyrannical even. She slaughtered people who were just doing what is the cultural norm in their city without giving them a chance to repent or change their ways. It was easily something one would expect from Joffrey and he would be loathed for it, but Dany does it and it is simply kick ass! XD
Now the scene was kick ass to be sure, but it showed that Dany is capable of doing some damn monstrous things to achieve her goals. Things that may be necessary even, but it just seems so odd to me that no one has commented about that aspect of the scene. It is yet another scene showing that there are no heroes or villains in the show, everyone has is capable of terrible, terrible things even if they mean well. All characters have a benevolent side as we well as malevolent side. To overlook one side in favor of the other is to miss half of the series, half of what is going on!
Second thing that strikes me is just how absolutely brilliant the scenes with Jaime and Brienne were! Jaime is so distraught that he is basically trying to do the Westrosi equivalent of "suicide by cops"... He knows he cannot win or escape, but he steals a sword and feebly attempts to fight with his off hand (his only hand still attached) and immediately sees he can do nothing. He is nothing now. I'm sure the thought of being cut down would have been a comfort for him in that moment.
That might've been my favorite episode of the season so far. It definitely delivered on what ASOIAF and GOT is best at: character deaths! Tywin was great, Dany was great (better than any episode of season 2 IMO!), the Night's Watch scenes were pretty good, Margaery and the QoT are still great. I loved how they set up all the scheming with Sansa as well. I could not help but laugh at Theon. (Cringeful laughing that is). Nice work by the "little bastard" :-)
If you remember, Roose Bolton told Robb that he would send his bastard to bring him Theon's head in Season 2. Robb said that he wanted him alive. So those are probably Boltons because of a few visual clues this season.
I think that the only true good person down to the core in GoT was Ned Stark. You can hardly fault her for being ruthless and ambitious when it is very much the norm.
love, Love, LOVED this episode!! Oh man Jammie,Brienne,Dany, even Joffrey was amazing in this episode...i would like to watch it once before saying anything else i missed a couple of things...
Jaime and Brienne´s scenes was terrific once again. Seeing him steal a sword and fight with one hand was terrible and seeing that Brienne cared was fantastic. The actors did a great job shoving emotions, but not too much.
My favorite character in this episode was Lord Varys. All his scenes were awesome. It gave a better understanding of who he is. It can never show the full picture we get of him in the books, but it was definitely a good step forward.
Margaery grows on me every week. She has some amazing scenes and the Queen of Thornes continues to shine aswell.
Am I the only one that still (after season 1, 2 and 4 episodes into season 3) thinks Cersei is different from the Cersei we see in the books? She is such a big part of the story and it continues to bother me that she doesn´t seem as strong as in the books. Maybe it´s just me.
In the books Cersei was so fiery and explosive, D&D have Headey playing Cersei a bit more flat. Often times she internalizes her emotions and thoughts where I took book Cersei as far more external.
Plus they have tried to make her more sympathetic I think. Changing the story she told Catelyn in Season 1 from aborting Robert's dark haired baby she hated to losing a child she loved... that change and other changes like that have really changed her character from a batshit crazy mother who is directly responsible for her batshit crazy son into more of a mother who bears some responsibility, but is really trying to do the best she can.
I think Cersei is the one major character that is the most different from her book persona IMO. I hope they really show her going nuts and hitting the downward spiral next season and beyond.
All this said, while I disliked Headey's performance in Season 1, I have grown to enjoy her as Cersei, but a very different Cersei than in the books.
Danny's storyline was especially awesome this ep. I also (suprisingly) loved Varys. Buuut, what's that about Loras marrying Sansa, did I hear right? First they scratch Garland at Blackwater and now Willas too? PS: Margaery is becoming one of my fav people on the show
I get why they are using Loras alone instead of his other two brothers, but it feels very odd to me too!
I assume he will still join the Kingsguard. Either he will do it to avoid marriage or Tywin will appoint him to remove the possibility of the Tyrells controlling Sansa and the North via marriage. The latter option also gives Tywin a reason to arrange a different marriage for Sansa.....
I seem to be alone in the sentiment the Jeor got what he deserved, letting his men die and siding with that scum. Jeor should have killed him years ago and stationed men at the house.
Margaery was a good character in the books, but in the series she is just brillinant. She is so well liked and getting a lot of scenes that wasn´t in the books. I will not be surpriced if that continues.
Duh! I think I remember the black screen and battle noises...I thought is was related to the battle at Kings Landing. When it opened on Sam running I thought he'd just come out from behind the rock he was hiding behind at the end of last season, I thought he was running for The Wall. Because of the blizzard, when he found the corpse, I just thought he'd been running the wrong way.
Not how Westeros works though. There are as many "bad" people as "good" and they need to coexist.
There is something barely touched on in the TV series, a sacred tradition that goes back thousands of years called "Guest Right". If a host offers a guest food and drink (traditionally bread and salt) both parties are safe under the law of Guest Right. Neither the host shall harm the guest nor the guest harm the host.
Sometimes when the guests depart they give guest gifts as a sign of respect. That is why you see the Night's Watch giving Craster mead or steel etc... It is not some barter and nicety it is part of a very sacred tradition. It is one of the fundamental rules of society and it simply does not get broken. Maybe once in all the time it has been around.
That is why you hear one of the NW brothers say that the gods will curse them when Craster is killed. Now that I think of it, it is probably why Craster says that he isa godly man too.
IT's quite sad, but true... In the books the characters around the Wall are some of my favorites, Jon in particular. They have not done his story justice.
It's not entirely D&D's fault though because in the books Jon is a Point-of-View character so we get inside his head and hear his internal monologue. It really fleshes out his character and many of those he interacts with.
I give the most complex character to Sandor Clegane, but Theon is a close second. Last episode was the first time I ever felt bad for him and that line about his father dying in King's Landing and making the wrong choice just melted my heart. I also love to follow him now, cause in the books we either don't know at all what's happening to him, or we find out in book 5, which I haven't read, so I was really curious to see his storyline develop.
And I'm loving Margaery too, much more than I ever thought I would. Natalie Dormer is phenomenal. I didn't think she would be fitting for this role when they casted her, but she's proved me wrong big time.
I didn't like scratching Willas either. I mean, I get that they have to limit the number of characters in the show, but for heaven's sake, Willas never even appeared in any scene. All they had to do was mention him to Sansa.
And in the book I liked the fact she was actually excited to marry Willas, even though he wasn't Loras, he was much older than her and had a bad leg. The poor girl just wanted someone to take care of her and love her for herself, not her legacy.
All I have to say about Loras is that it would have made much more sense if he'd joined the Kingsguard right away, like in the book. "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it".
Awesome episode best of the season so far esp. the Dany side of the story Good directing from Alex Graves i still have hope for his version of "The Selection"
I actually don't like Dany. Like, at all. I don't particularly care about her, but at times, she annoys me to pieces. There are so many truly awesome characters out there, complex, interesting, complicated, whereas Dany is so, well, shallow. The thing that annyos me the most about her is that she claims she deserves to rule Westeros, yet she knows nothing about how life over there looks like. She idealizes her family, while most of them were cruel and/or insane. She's an ignorant. And people think she's such a badass, but she's had a bunch of people helping her out from the very beginning.
And yes, the fact that most people love her for things others would be hated for annoys me too. But well, she's a Targaryen. She's meant to be a little insane.
Honestly, the only Targaryen I love is Rhaegar. Danaerys isn't half as great of a ruler as he would've been, I think.I wish he would've survived.
Too bad Rhaegar was killed indeed! I guess that is what makes some of the last book's revelations (Young Griff) so interesting to me. A child of Rhaegar might be more promising than a child of the Mad King Aerys!
Of course with Targaryens who knows! Even the best Targaryens seem to have some madness in them.
Yes he was supposed to do it first thing this season going by the book chronology .. I think. I'm guessing he still will do it now that he has Gilly in tow. He will run into a WW and kill it protecting her.
I do wonder if his brothers will be there to witness it thogh. I guess they can have Grenn and Edd fleeing Craster's Keep as well... Everyone runs into one another just as Sam kills the WW? Dunno.
I understand Guest Right but that's only good or the length of the stay. Even after Jeor knew what was going on he kept returning and kept silent about it and kept returning time after time... having found out the truth he shouldn't have accepted hospitality again. I consider him complicit in the abuse of the daughters, sacrifice of male babies and the death of the man who starved to death - he could have stopped it but chose not to, and thus deserved what he got.
Valid argument.... I never really understood exactly why they let Craster live in peace either.
Despicable man without question... just not sure it is/was the NW job to kill every bad Wildling outside the Wall. I assumed as long as Craster kept to himself for the most part he was okay. It seemed to open a a can of worms to kill him.
Like you said though, he deserved what he got, just not how he got it in my opinion.
yeah, well, I guess they need to have some brothers witness it, if they want to go with the nickname, otherwise it would make no sense and nobody would believe him.
Don't get me wrong... I don't think what the others did was right, especially their actions after, but I don't think it would have come to that if Jeor had done the right thing IMO - ie put an end to Craster much earlier and not just dismissed his mens grievances.
I´m glad that I´m not alone. I also think Headey´s preformance got a lot better, and it is not really her fault. In the books both Joffrey and Cersei were crazy and explosive and seemed to have a slightly different relationship than in the series. While I think Jack Gleeson is brilliant as Joffrey and very true to the character, it is still hard for me to like Cersei in the series. Something is missing and I like her much less.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
By far and wide margin the best of the season so far, it had everything a GoT episode needs
ReplyDeleteAwesome - my only gripe is that the Astapor scene was so amazing that it deserved more build up. It could have done with a short scene earlier in the episode where she's chaining Drogon up and arguing with Jorah and Barristan, just to make the shock of Dracarys that much better.

ReplyDeleteIf you remember, Roose Bolton told Robb that he would send his bastard
ReplyDeleteto bring him Theon's head in Season 2. Robb said that he wanted him
alive. So those are probably Boltons because of a few visual clues this
season.
An awesome ending to an awesome episode. Certanly this shows gets better and better every week.
ReplyDeleteI think that the only true good person down to the core in GoT was Ned Stark. You can hardly fault her for being ruthless and ambitious when it is very much the norm.
ReplyDeleteCould be.
ReplyDeleteIt is
ReplyDeletelove, Love, LOVED this episode!! Oh man Jammie,Brienne,Dany, even Joffrey was amazing in this episode...i would like to watch it once before saying anything else i missed a couple of things...
ReplyDeleteJaime and Brienne´s scenes was terrific once again. Seeing him steal a sword and fight with one hand was terrible and seeing that Brienne cared was fantastic. The actors did a great job shoving emotions, but not too much.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite character in this episode was Lord Varys.
You're not alone.
ReplyDeleteIn the books Cersei was so fiery and explosive, D&D have Headey playing Cersei a bit more flat.
PS: Margaery is becoming one of my fav people on the show
ReplyDeleteI get why they are using Loras alone instead of his other two brothers, but it feels very odd to me too!
ReplyDeleteI assume he will still join the Kingsguard.
ReplyDeleteRamsay motherf*cking Snow!
ReplyDeleteMargaery was a good character in the books, but in the series she is just brillinant. She is so well liked and getting a lot of scenes that wasn´t in the books. I will not be surpriced if that continues.
ReplyDeleteDuh!
ReplyDeleteThank you. That clears things up a bit.
Not how Westeros works though. There are as many "bad" people as "good" and they need to coexist.
ReplyDeleteThere is something barely touched on in the TV series, a sacred tradition that goes back thousands of years called "Guest Right".
ReplyDeleteIn the books the characters around the Wall are some of my favorites, Jon in particular. They have not done his story justice.
It's not entirely D&D's fault though because in the books Jon is a Point-of-View character so we get inside his head and hear his internal monologue. It really fleshes out his character and many of those he interacts with.
I'm sure you were not the only one confused.
ReplyDeleteHell, I was a bit confused and I have read the books! XD
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm loving Margaery too, much more than I ever thought I would.
ReplyDeleteAnd in the book I liked the fact she was actually excited to marry Willas, even though he wasn't Loras, he was much older than her and had a bad leg. The poor girl just wanted someone to take care of her and love her for herself, not her legacy.
All I have to say about Loras is that it would have made much more sense if he'd joined the Kingsguard right away, like in the book. "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it".
Awesome episode best of the season so far esp. the Dany side of the story
ReplyDeleteGood directing from Alex Graves i still have hope for his version of "The Selection"
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the fact that most people love her for things others would be hated for annoys me too. But well, she's a Targaryen. She's meant to be a little insane.
Honestly, the only Targaryen I love is Rhaegar. Danaerys isn't half as great of a ruler as he would've been, I think.I wish he would've survived.
Too bad Rhaegar was killed indeed!
ReplyDeleteI guess that is what makes some of the last book's revelations (Young Griff) so interesting to me. A child of Rhaegar might be more promising than a child of the Mad King Aerys!
Of course with Targaryens who knows! Even the best Targaryens seem to have some madness in them.
GRRM you better have those fat little fingers flying over the keyboard....I need book 6 UNDERSTOOD!!!
ReplyDeleteOk, help me out, I don't remember the order of things from the book... but wasn't Sam supposed to become Sam the Slayer yet?
ReplyDeleteyes, but isn't it the case with other characters as well? I guess that's the price for making a TV show out of a POV book.
ReplyDeleteYes he was supposed to do it first thing this season going by the book chronology .. I think. I'm guessing he still will do it now that he has Gilly in tow. He will run into a WW and kill it protecting her.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder if his brothers will be there to witness it thogh.
ReplyDeleteI consider him complicit in the abuse of the daughters, sacrifice of male babies and the death of the man who starved to death - he could have stopped it but chose not to, and thus deserved what he got.
Valid argument....
ReplyDeleteI never really understood exactly why they let Craster live in peace either.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong... I don't think what the others did was right, especially their actions after, but I don't think it would have come to that if Jeor had done the right thing IMO - ie put an end to Craster much earlier and not just dismissed his mens grievances.
ReplyDeleteI´m glad that I´m not alone.
