I didn't like the romance between The Doctor and Clara. It's like they can't built a companion who doesn't have this kind of feelings for him. I'm just saying that Donna as a huge success and she was just a friend. Really disappointed with the way they built up Clara. Though the episode was ok, because we got to see a lot of the TARDIS and that's always good.
I saw it similar to Amy/Doctor, kind of a deep friendship kind of relationship rather than a romantic one. I loved Rose/Doctor (which I know is controversial ) and I really dislike the River Song/Amy/Rory aspect of it.
Yeah, but I find it hard to understand whether it's actually romantic or not. There are certain moments but in the same time they could be seen as friendly or family-like. If that's so hard to write a companion as a friend why not create a male one.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's done on purpose - I do see a romance vibe between them but some could easily just see it as a loving friendship. I do partly suspect they've written it in such a way that you can read into it what you wish.
I think it's best that way. A true relationship would never work but I feel like you can be friends with someone but still may be a little confused - at least initially - what your feelings actually mean. The Doctor is an attractive alien who looks like a normal man who whisks these girls off on great adventures and gives them the most memorable moments they will ever experience... a deep love only makes sense even if there's nothing sexual going on.
I really enjoy the budding...romance(?) between Clara and the Doctor. Some people have a problem with it but here is how I see it.
First off, romance between the Doctor and any of his companions have NEVER been written well at all, but his time with Rose was really cute. We saw an entirely different side of him that was somewhat reluctantly falling in love with a human, but they had a connection he couldn't deny.
Forgive me if I mess up the order, it's been a while. Then there was Martha who had a thing for him but he had no interest in her that way, then there was Donna which had no romantic undertones whatsoever, then there was Amy...which was complicated.
I believe that the Doctor cared more for Amy than he ever had any of his previous companions. Yes, even Rose, and throughout her entire run, especially at the beginning, there was a very physical attraction there. The Doctor did that thing where he pretends it's not even there, but it was. He never seemed to hate the idea of being romantically involved with Amy, and if he didn't eventually start bringing Rory along he might have.
But he grew to like Rory and the love he shared with Amy and it changed the entire mood. I really enjoyed how flirtatious Amy and the Doctor were in the beginning, because lets face it she's a gorgeous woman and the Doctor isn't an idiot.
I like River Song, but their whole romance felt a little...ridiculous. She's gone 99% of the time, it felt more like an excuse for them to ignore romance entirely because then they had an actual story driven excuse not to include it.
Not we've got Clara. This is the only companion so far that didn't jump on the Tardis immediately and leave everything for an adventure. She took her time deciding to go with him, and throughout the episodes there have been many moments where they just seem to...fit together. The Doctor has never been more comfortable with a companion as he is with Clara, and Clara got used to the Doctor's...quirks faster than any companion I've ever seen.
For some reason, in each of their scenes, they just seem to fit each other in a way I've never seen with any of his other companions. They click into place, and that makes the romance part of it a lot more fun, because the reason behind it is most certainly tied into the secret behind her existence.
Also, and I think this is the most important part, her reincarnation throughout time fixes the absolute main issue that the Doctor has always had when it came to getting close to someone. Because people age faster than he does. That's always something that has been agonizing for him to watch, but Clara reappears,
Quite a bit of this season has had love in it, and not just between the main characters. I think they're trying to set a certain tone as Clara and the Doctor get closer. Whether or not it will become more than that between them is up in the air. I gave up predicting the romantic aspects of this show years ago because it never goes in any logical direction, but it's still fun to watch.
And come on! Clara is absolutely gorgeous, if the Doctor wasn't attracted to her I would go crazy. He is a man after all.
Because the history dictates that the primary companion be a girl, and I don't think that's one they should ever break from. There should be an underlying romantic element, if not in the sexual sense. It should be a wacky man showing a brilliant girl the universe - that's as core to Doctor Who as anything. I would argue it's the definition of the show, above and beyond Daleks, adventures, history and saving the world.
In this case, I don't see it as clearly a love story. They're definitely towing the line in-between friend-zone (Donna) and overt love interest (Rose). I like a little bit of a tension, but it's a tight-rope. Love their dynamic so far, don't want to it shift in either direction too far. The last two were clearly BFF's, I like a little more tension and guardedness in their interaction. More sizzle, less support.
Don't get me wrong i love the Doctor and River together, having adventures and all, and the hint of her being his wife was fun too, but i really disliked the "marriage". I hope Moffat doesn't choose to make it cannon
Enjoyed it, but I think this episode was just made to satisfy fangirls/fanboys by allowing us a glimpse into the TARDIS. Not much in the way of a story, but I liked the flirtation between the Doctor and Clara. I was practically swooning when they held hands. I didn't see a reason to include those guys/androids,general bickering men. They server no purpose at all. I wasn't made to care about them at all because they weren't interesting or deep. I guess the writers just wanted a few more characters to stick in to make the atmosphere less lonely. Overall, cute episode that I'll watch again when I'm sad or its raining or when Eleven regenerates because I'll cry over him for years.
Pretty sure they do consider them self married though. And I don´t think that River would cheat on the Doctor. Flirt with other men? Sure. Sleep with them? Not so much.
There's absolutely nothing that convinces me that a) River believes in monogamy (the show did establish that humans in the future are a lot more open a while ago) or b) the Doctor would be very bothered at all if she had lovers. He can't even be sure when he'll see her - not exactly fair to expect her to spend her whole life waiting on him.
Oh well, guess we see things differently then. There is absolutely nothing that I have seen that has convinced me that River dosen´t love the Doctor, or that the Doctor dosen´t love River.
Yesterday I watched Doctor Who, the latest episode and never even questioned why the salvage people, the 'thieves' were all young black men. But my dad's girlfriend did; she thought it was awful and the most racist thing she'd seen in quite a while. She believed it was perpetrating more harmful stereotypes and told me that the problem was that people 'notice but they don't take note, they don't think because they don't have to and they'll never understand unless they're not a piece of chalk like the majority of the population.' And she's right. It's hard to notice unless these things affect us directly. I apologise if this does affect you directly. I've no idea of your race or of you've ever been affected in such a harsh manner. But it made me sad to realise how blissfully unaware I was of things that should be obvious.
The episode was awesome, one of the best in a long time, but I'm really not fond of Clara, I feel like their trying to make her too much like River or Amy. And I love the 11/River relationship as it is I don't really want a love triangle messing it all up.
This is not to be obtuse or anything. But for the life of me i really can not see how the Salvage crew being black or their behaviour for that matter was racist in any way. I must say it sounds like grasping at straws to me.
I have to say i thoroughly disagree with you. Clara is a pleasant breath of fresh air to me. I loved Amy, River and Rory as companions, but the storylines with them were becoming very stale towards the end and i wouldn't mind if we don't see river that much or if the "wedding" is not going to be considered cannon.
See, this is my problem. I'm not qualfied to answer you, to give you a fully detailed answer. I'm white. A lot of the more problematic aspects of the way minorities are portrayed fly right over my head. But my Dad's girlfriend isn't white. And if this episode was enough to sicken her, to make her angry and appalled, to alienate her so throughly from the show, then something must be heavily, heavily wrong. She sees things, witnesses things and lives through things that the majority of the population will never fully understand. So when she says: this was horrible, I tend to listen.
And I can understand her point. Society, or at least some areas of it, have an unsavory image of young black men as opportunistic, willing to steal and tear and destroy. And err, there were certain elements of it reflected in the episode. Yes, there were good elements as well. The brothers loved each other, one was willing to die for the other etc. all celebrations of humanity that Doctor Who has always been very good at. But to the person I watched it with, the bad overwhelmed the good. It made her turn away. And if she got that message from it, I wonder how many other people received the same one.
So she disliked it because of the fact that the villains were black and that they were portrayed in a way that is reminiscent of stereotypes of blacks? My answer to that would be that it would be equally stereotypical towards blacks or other minorities if they were only portrayed as good guys. And it is not like the villains on DW are just minorities, very far from it in fact :D
I think that this was the first time (correct me if I'm wrong) that a villain in DW was black. They are usually white (or metal:) and their characters are often far far worse. The reason they were ALL black is that they were brothers. It makes sense that they had the same skin colour. The reason I don't notice is because I don't care what colour their skin is. I don't draw any conclusions or parallels with real life. I understand your dad's girlfriend's reaction but it is a bit of an overreaction and it should be seen from a wider perspective. The racism will be there as long as people will have these reactions. When no one notices what skin colour the villains are then it's gone. Should there be rules against casting black people as villains? No, it makes no sense.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Brilliant! One of the best Who episodes in a long time, could have even passed as a final IMO. We even saw the swimming pool! The swimming pool!!!

ReplyDeleteEasily the best Doctor Who episode in months!

ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more :D
ReplyDeletecompletely agree with Angela, now that we have Clara as a companion (and i've always liked Matt) it finally feels like the 11th doctor is taking off!

True. But what about River? I can't imagine the Doctor cheating.

ReplyDeleteThe Doctor does not understand Clara and wants to solve the puzzle, that builds on the sexual chemistry and tension
