“GLEE” TUNES UP FOR A FIFTH AND SIXTH SEASON ON FOX
Sarah Jessica Parker Guest-Stars on Next All-New Episode
Thursday, April 25
FOX has ordered two more seasons of the genre-defying musical sensation GLEE, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.
“GLEE debuted as the first and only successful musical comedy series on television, and more than four years later, it continues to defy genres, break new ground and have a significant impact on popular culture,” said Reilly. “Week in and week out, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, Dante DiLoreto and the entire GLEE team deliver a series that not only delights and surprises fans, but also inspires them to talk about, share, debate and engage with the show – and I’m absolutely thrilled to have them on board for another two seasons.”
“GLEE has been a signature series for the studio since its launch four years ago and we couldn’t be happier that FOX has ordered two more seasons,” commented Twentieth Century Fox Television Chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman. “Ryan, Brad, Ian and Dante have created something that is far larger than a television show; it’s a global entertainment brand which continues to touch millions around the world. From its chart-topping musical numbers to its inventive storytelling and rich, complex characters, GLEE rewrote the rules of what network television could be, and we are enormously proud to be the studio behind it.”
“I am very grateful to Kevin, Dana and Gary for their incredible support of this series from the beginning,” added Murphy. “But I also want to thank our loyal audience, whose passion and enthusiasm continue to amaze and inspire us.”
Over the past four seasons, GLEE has built a loyal fan base of “Gleeks”; made tracksuits, musicals and outcasts cool again; attracted A-list guest stars from Kate Hudson and Katey Sagal to Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow; covered music from Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Madonna and Stevie Wonder; and received prestigious awards and nominations, from the Golden Globes to the Writers Guild. This hit series and its extraordinary characters have become an indelible part of pop culture and will continue entertaining fans through 2015.
Last month, the series reached its milestone 500th performance with a rendition of the anthem, “Shout.” GLEE music continues to shatter records with more than 53 million GLEE tracks digitally downloaded and more than 13 million albums sold worldwide. GLEE albums have garnered two platinum albums (sales in excess of 1 million units) and five gold albums (sales in excess of 500,000 units). Also, the GLEE cast holds the record for most singles to ever enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart (203 tracks to date), surpassing records previously held by Elvis Presley, the Beatles and James Brown.
This season, originals of GLEE are averaging a 3.6/10 among Adults 18-49 and 8.7 million Total Viewers. GLEE is a Top 10 comedy among Adults 18-49, a Top 10 show overall among Adults 18-34 and the No. 1 show overall on broadcast television among Teens (tied with FAMILY GUY).
Now in its fourth season, GLEE has made an effortless transition to college with Rachel (Lea Michele) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) attending NYADA, while the new kids of McKinley continue to strive for a glee club win at Regionals.
In the next all-new episode of GLEE, “Lights Out,” airing Thursday, April 25 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), Will (Matthew Morrison) and Finn (Cory Monteith) enlist the members of New Directions to “unplug” and perform acoustic numbers, after the power goes out at McKinley High School. Meanwhile, Isabelle Wright (guest star Sarah Jessica Parker) asks Kurt to volunteer at the Vogue.com charity event, with Rachel and Santana (Naya Rivera) in tow.

What? Is this true? I am shocked they have renewed it for season 6 as well (season 5 was an absolutely certain thing)
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! Surprised about a 2 season renewal. I don't watch the show but I've heard it's been a hot mess as of late.
ReplyDeleteWait what? That seems somewhat crazy not like the ratings have been setting any kind of records in recent seasons.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, was not expecting that! I wonder if season six will be it.
ReplyDeleteA hot mess since S1 ended really.
ReplyDeleteWell I should have said the "last couple of seasons" but I was trying to be nice for the remaining fans. Welp!
ReplyDeleteI hope FOX moves this to Fridays next season.
ReplyDeleteUgh.
ReplyDeleteI thought they were going to, but I don't think it would survive there for two seasons. I think it will remain put now. FOX is crazy, they need the real estate to get new shows, as Glee is fading fast, reliable old Bones doesn't have that much life left in it and even American Idol doesn't show enough strength to be around for much longer.
ReplyDeleteStopped watching after Season 2. I need some consistency in my story lines. A shame too - I really do think Season 1 was awesome and just downhill from there - but clearly, someone is watching, so credit where credit is due.
ReplyDeleteSeriously? I'm very surprised that it was even renewed for one more season, let alone two. I didn't think that many were even watching anymore. Wow.
ReplyDeleteYou have a point, Friday slots did hurt Fringe, and Touch. There hasn't been a successful Friday Show for the network since The X-Files and that was 17 years ago.
ReplyDeleteSeason 1 of Glee surprised me, I remember thinking oh great high school musical the tv show. But It was a funny and odd ball satire of high school and the singing was good. It went downhill from there but it was always fun to hear takes on popular and old songs, and I thought it was cool that younger generations were discovering different music they might not have heard otherwise. This season has been a joke though, I could see them trying to rally with another season but Fox must be mad to approve two more seasons.
ReplyDeleteInteresting 5 and 6? What is going to happen? most of them are graduating this year. More split locations?
ReplyDeleteBitter because this should have been Fringe.
ReplyDeleteComedy? Hasn't Glee always been dubbed as a Dramedy?
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit surprised as well as I stopped watching after last year's finale - the "graduation" felt like a good spot to cut it loose. The show for me really hasn't been consistently good ever since the first half of S1, imho. There were some pretty good eps on the way to the graduation, but far more uneveness than good for me. The performances were usually great, but the storylines really left a lot to be desired. I'm glad for the fans who've remained and hope that the next couple of seasons will be worth their fandom.
ReplyDeleteI have such mixed feelings about Glee. On the one hand I can see that it's a mess and that it hasn't had a proper storyline in years. On the other, it mindlessly cheers me up when life's being a bitch. I'm not sure what I'm feeling about this pickup, really.
ReplyDeleteThey better have a semi-decent plot for seasons 5 and 6, otherwise I bet even die hard fans will give up on Glee. There's only so much high school drama one person can handle.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised. Two seasons? I don't know what to think. I love(d) glee, but fourth season isn't so good. I hope it will be better and it won't be a disaster. I want the good old glee back.
ReplyDelete"Six seasons and a movie!" (You'll get that if you watch Community)
ReplyDeleteWHY? Season four sucks so much I gave up the show completely... Haven't watched a single episode since Christmas. Should just cancel and put it out of its misery...
ReplyDeleteCool, great news.
ReplyDeleteAgreed!
ReplyDeleteI understand about season 5 because apparently they stretch the season competition, but 6 so soon? I love season 4 actually. Why think so much when you're watching a show like Glee?! Come on!
ReplyDeleteseason 5 it os gonna be it for Glee i think that is why they did the renewal so fast! ryan wanted to assure a final season
ReplyDeleteThis is a very late April fools joke right? How could it renewed for not one but two more seasons?
ReplyDeleteFringe is fantastic, but don't have audience.
ReplyDeleteHappy but surprised, the show has gone down hill massively.. I don't see this getting past season 6 but you never know! I hope they can pull it back, they just have about 5 characters to many.. they need to flesh out the new kids... without forgetting Lea/Cory/Naya etc. They have kind of wrote themselves into a corner.
ReplyDeleteNot shocking at all that this was renewed but I have to say I don't really care much for this show anymore the only redeeming thing about this season is Finn and his episode yesterday. Sadly, it's not the same anymore and i don't like the new cast. I guess I have to deal with it!
ReplyDeleteHuh... well here's hoping they abandon McKinley and just keep around the ones who'd survive in New York, moving the show there. That seems to be when fans enjoy the most recent season the most, me included.
