Not sure what I was expecting from this show but I wasn't too enthused by the idea but gave it a look anyhow and was very surprised. Norman is just the right mix of innocent, naive and creepy as hell and his mother is controlling, smothering and loving too... definitely going to keep watching.
Great characterization so far and the two leading actors are amazing! Never thought my baby August Rush can turn into such a cute/creepy Norman Bates O_O
I voted "awesome"! Thought it was great for a Pilot and I find I can get on board with the contemporary time period just fine! That scene with the Sheriff and the bathroom was SO good! Nestor Carbonell was SO perfect! I liked the cast, I liked the writing, I liked the style/feel, and I liked the execution!
The only drawback was the scene with the Nestor Carbonell. I know they were just trying to create tension, but he came across as far more suspicious than he actually had cause to be. And what's his problem with Norman being up at 12 on a school night? He's 17, not 7.
I'm intrigued about the little manga book. I think that either a) the owner of that book is the same person who is being held captive in the final scene and he pictures are clues as to what is happening to her. Or b) the end scene was actually a flash-forward of Norman doing that stuff to the girl, having got his inspiration from the book.
Did anyone manage to get a screenshot of the page with the Chinese characters. I couldn't make it out. If I could get a good-quality screenshot I might be able to at least get some kind of gist.
I thought I'd give this a chance since Carlton Cuse was involved. Also wanted to see Nestor C. in action again and so glad he was introduced right away in the pilot episode!
At some points it did feel a little like a movie of the week. Dramatic music, corny dialogue, etc. but then it got better! I especially like how tptb incorporated the old with the new. Old movies, old house with all the 50's style settings and even Norma in her dresses and old car.
The whole scenario with the crazy man seemed a little over the top in writing but it did give the mother another reason to show the viewers that this is probably not the first time she's killed someone ( husband) and so we see how poor Norman is being raised by this unbalanced woman.
Lot's of creepy scenes though and it does have that cliff hanger stuff with the book Norman found and what it all means. Also loved how we see how manipulative Norma is even with the sheriff and his deputy. Nestor C. was great as the sheriff who knows something is off with this woman and her son.

I disagree a little. It seems to me the set up has the makings that manypeople in the town have something to hide. It's up for debate if he actually looked in the bathtub or not (the curtains swayed when he opened the door on his way out!) It could be that he's "a-ok" with the man's death (seems like he was a serial rapist/really into bondage from the looks of his book, I doubt what he did to Norma was his first ever assault). I liked that N.C. was SO stoic and serious. There was a darkness that comes with him that his partner didn't have, that I find both suspicious and intriguing. I feel like the show is about Norman living around a bunch of brutal killers...
Good calls on the Manga and how it relates to the final scene!!! I haven't found screen shots yet, but if I do, or if someone on the net has translated the characters, I'll come back and let you know!
I'm happy to go with that. If there is a lot more going on in the town and if the man was a known bad-egg, then that would fit more with Nestor's behaviour. I just felt, watching it, that he was being overly suspicious for the sake of creating tension.
I'm pretty sure one of the promos I watched had a logline of "Town with secrets".. It was very dramatic scene, but I think it was filmed that way, not just to create crazy suspense (which really had a nice Hitchcock feel), but the suspense is also riding on what we don't know about all of the other characters, as he came off exceptionally bizar (intense) for a Sheriff just checking the area. It was like he was way more paranoid than they were.
I was Googling to see if anyone else had translated the book, but instead I found this passage from a reviewer who seems to have seem a few episodes in advance.
*Spoiler alert*
"Norman tries to fit in at his new high school, but he’s more transfixed by the lurid bondage-themed manga sketchbook he discovers while pulling up old carpet in the motel. A new friend at school (Olivia Cooke) helps him translate the writings in the journal, which sends them on a sleuthing trip in the woods, Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew-style." - http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-03-14/entertainment/37705421_1_psycho-bates-motel-vera-farmiga

I'm ready for next week.
ReplyDeleteGreat. I am interested in who Norman's brother is and how he fits in.

ReplyDeleteIt started slow then really went into 2nd gear around the 25 minutes mark.

ReplyDeleteLiked it... very eerie is the best way to describe it...
ReplyDeleteHelps that the cast is exceptionally strong! Promising new show
