Period drama won't be returning to the 1950s newsroom for a third series

The Hour has been axed by BBC2 and will not return for a third series, it's been confirmed.

The period drama, which was set in the 1950s and concerned the genesis of a fictional current affairs programme on BBC Television, was created by Abi Morgan and starred Dominic West, Ben Whishaw and Romola Garai.

It had been the original intention of the production company behind the programme, Kudos, to produce at least three series. Jane Featherstone, chief executive of Kudos Film and Television, said she was "sad and disappointed" by the decision.

The BBC said: "We loved the show but have to make hard choices to bring new shows through."

  1. NOOO! I can't believe they ended it like THIS. Even though it was quite expected.

  2. First Merlin, then Being Human, now The Hour, what the hell?! I'm still not over Doctor Who Confidential... I'll be needing some therapy, thanks to BBC

  3. I wonder if Dominic West wishes he took the role of Mance Rayder on Game of Thrones now? XD

A bit surprised honestly. I thought the second season was perhaps a step below Season 1, but still quality TV. I never did see the ratings numbers for the series though...

  4. That's what a 20% budget cut to a channel does to original programming.

  5. Dominic West, according to Deadline, is a very in-demand talent this pilot season. That guy won't be hurting for job offers. :)

  6. Oh it's true...
I know he has at least 2 projects I have read about coming up for 2013 release.

As much as I cannot fault the man for declining the role since he wants to stay closer to home for his kids, I still feel a little bitter he turned down the role I guess. XD

  7. I'm not surprised not after they treated the show. S2 was meant to air around May last year and they pushed it back till the end of 2012 and then kind of acted like it wasn't there and they wonder why the ratings dropped? I'm saddened especially after the cliffhanger ending and also miffed that the BBC keep cancelling its best shows, The Fades, Being Human and now this.
