First: 'Root’s back, but what’s she up to?' great surprise, second: 'Carter takes a lie detector test and gets more than she bargained for' poor detective, third: 'Reese goes from bellhop to kitchen staff, and gives Hersch a choice' Reese Vs Hersch finally.
Root's return was definitely exciting, but I had to go for Reese vs Hersh. Problems with a hitman sending his target to a kitchen aside, that fight scene was great. They were pretty much equal to each other, and it was a great character moment for Reese when he let him live.
For me, it had to be Root. Showing us that she was working in the government raised quite a few questions.
Is she in Special Counsel's office to get closer to him/find out more about the Machine? Since she was there for some time (was it 2 months?), did she have a hand in discreetly tipping off the FBI about Reese during Shadow Box? Alternatively, has she been doing that to Special Counsel to aid Hersh's hunt for Reese? After all, if he was out of the way, what's stopping her from truly running off with Finch again?
Does she know about the Stanton virus glitching the Machine? Special Counsel seemed to be aware of it. If push came to shove, would she and Finch have to work together to stop it? (Okay, I'll admit, that's just me hoping for an interesting work/hate relationship for Finch...)
I liked how this was the most surprising part of the episode, for me at least. They showed the secretary before, but never her face. Considering Root is a main player this season, they left her name out of the press release, so to see her at the end was a great little twist, even if could have seen it coming. If Amy Acker's name had been listed in the episode, it would have been too obvious. Kudos, team!
(Also, if they're leaving her name out of the cast lists for episodes for this sort of thing, I wonder how many times they may do that for other episodes with other characters? I personally like the surprise, so if CBS/Jonah + Greg did this more often, I wouldn't mind!)
I voted Reese vs Hersch but liked a lot of these others as well. I love the little moments in this show, like the hotel trivia chat at the beginning, or the (not included) first dialogue scene between Carter and her sweetie--before th elie detector text made it all go blooey. Fusco popping two of the assassins was a cool little scene, too, but not better than the options here. Oh, and Reese's evident contempt for the hotel floor manager, with its predictable but nevertheless amusing climax! No Bear, though. :(
I noticed that too, about Amy Acker's name. I've never seen that happen with a show before. With shows like LOST and Fringe I always had to cover the credits to make sure I wouldn't be spoiled!
Btw, when did they show the secretary before? I don't remember that, but that's pretty cool!
They showed the secretary once I believe in a previous episode with Special Counsel (sometime after Bad Code is all I can remember...). The faceless woman was in the room for maybe thirty seconds, but if she wasn't going to be important at all, there wouldn't have been a need to show her! ;)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Carter is just a wonderfull character
ReplyDeleteI found all those options very interesting but I loved all the Scenes with Zoe.
ReplyDeleteHer come back was needed.

ReplyDeletePlus: Finch buy the hotel, Bruce Wayne style.

ReplyDeleteMy mouth dropped when Root was revealed to be the assistant. Bravo, writers!
ReplyDeleteGreat points Michele, and Yes they have showed the secretary several times Jim, I guess in episodes 10 & 12.
