Supernatural - Song-to-Scene - 2D - Poll

11 Jan 2013

Yesterday was a decisive win for each song-to-scene moving to round 3. There were no last minute wins here given the closest race was 60-40. Winners included Wanted Dead or Alive (81%), What a Wonderful World (72%), Highway to Hell (60%), and Rock of Ages (66%). That's going to make for some rough polls in the next go-around. Today we have some equally tough choices as we conclude round 2. For the first time, I have no clue what is going to win in 3 of the 4 polls. Of all the Supernatural contests we've done on SpoilerTV, this one is by far the most difficult for me. I can't imagine how hard the semifinals will be.

  1. 1. O Death - no contest at all. This is one of the most true song-to-scene in TV history not just SPN. In fact when I first saw the preview, I thought the song was written specifically for this scene. Space Oddity on the other hand has the right drugged-out, hippy mood with lyrics that don't match the scene much at all.

    2. Neither - Originally I was going to vote for Simple Man in here but the more I watch the clip the more I realize I like it simply for the video editing. Plus the lyrics don't match well since only one of the brothers is looking for a simple life at that point and neither are simple men at all. Plus their momma never had a chance to give them words of wisdom.

    3. The Gambler - At least this has something to do with the scene since it is telling the story of Bobby and the montage scene is helping us get to know Bobby more. Eye of the Tiger was the biggest mistake in the original nominations in my opinion. Take any good drum solo and substitute it in. You've got the exact same scene. In fact it would have probably been better if it had been a Led Zeppelin John Bonham solo piece.

    4. Both - I can't decide yet. I'm going to take the night and think about it some more. I've watched these video clips over and over and they are both great. It's the battle of the Supernatural shockers with the music ushering us in. Anyone have a great argument that can help me decide? This doesn't bode well for the rest of the contest.

  3. Ok, I'm not sure what I'm going to vote yet, but I recently saw Monster Movie and Yellow Fever, and It struck me that Dean was listening to Eye of the Tiger in his car for a reason. I mean the song was not chosen just for the drum beats. The poor guy is feeling so (untypically) scared that he doesn't want to stay in the motel room and looks for something to give him some courage. We see him later here and there having a sip of liquor from his flask, to try to become at least a bit brave.
So, if Dean wants to listen to a song in his car to get courageous it does make sense that he would choose Eye of the Tiger. I believe he even mentions this song in another episode (3.16) as one of his favorite resources for preparing to face up to big dangers. Episode 4.6 reprises the situation in 3.16: Dean waiting for the clock to arrive at the time of an inevitable death, even Lilith (a hallucination of her) is there to be the one to kill him in her 3.16 meatsuit. The song "Eye of the Tiger" fits very well with all of this, even if we only scarcely hear the beginning.
I also like The Gambler, and I might vote for it, but at least I want to say that "Eye of the Tiger" is a worthy contender in this contest. This song has much to do with how Dean wants to see himself. I would say that the producers found out that in 3.16 "Wanted Dead or Alive" was a better fit (and it is, I love that scene), but still wanted to connect Dean to Eye of the Tiger in this reprisal of a similar deadly situation. the meaning is there and has finally gotten to the fans via the splendid outtake at the end. So, I get it, the outtake doesn't belong to the episode, but the little bit of the song that is heard during the episode does have a special relevant meaning.
By the way, the whole Monster Movie episode has amazing music choices, which fit their scenes really well, but I suppose they aren't in this contest because they are all instrumental music, not really "songs"

  4. 1) Much as I love the Space Oddity song-to-scene it is easy for me to pick O Death

    2) Simple Man Didn't vote for You Shook Me All Night Long and it works less for me now.

    3) Gambler Another easy one.

    4) Well-Respected Man

Wow. Today was pretty easy for me. I'm guessing my luck is going to dribble away here.

  6. Hmmm, Simple Man for me is one of the best song-to-scene match ups in this contest. As I think I mentioned before, for me getting the song and scene to work together isn't a linear task. It's not always lyrics + music + emotional content. Most of the time it's a matter of getting me to understand an the levels in a scene. For Simple Man, it was the tone of the music....there's a melancholy, lost feeling to the music and the singers voice that, for me underlines the fact that the brothers are both lost, sad, and just missing something as they go on alone.

This specific song makes the scene better. I would say that about all of my personal favorites.

Though I do have to say that you have gotten me to consider the lyrics more as I've evaluated the song-to-scene contenders.

  7. You make an excellent point about Eye of the Tiger. I hadn't considered that before.

  8. Here 'O Death' is inevitable. It's similar to the KItt/Knight Rider scene, it just fits like a glove.:)
    X
I'm not particularly drawn to any of these two song/scenes, I'll end up voting for the losing entry.
    X
These two don't inspire me much either but I'll go with "The Gambler" in memory of the great Bobby.
    X
Gosh, I like both; couldn't they have gone up against some of the others!
However "A Well Respected Man" has to get it. Just love that S/S! :)

  11. 1. Easy choice - OF Death. For me it is one of memorable scenes in show and without that song i don't think it would have the same effect.
    2. Neither
    3. The Gambler, fits better.
    4. A Well-Respected Man. Because left bigger impression on me.

  12. This is an interesting way to look at the song-to-scene choice. We are never told that this is a song Dean uses to psych himself up though. Instead, we Sam mentions this song as a way to make fun of Dean's locker room speech. However it is universally tied to the movie Rocky which is about someone defying the odds and is therefore used in Hollywood and college arenas as a shortcut for someone who prevails over tough circumstances. In that way it does indeed fit a man who needs to psych himself up against fear itself.

I doubt the producers used this song because of No Rest for the Wicked though, because Sam was using it as a punch line not a sincere moment. It's similar to when Dean or Bobby try to slough off a deep moment with a Hallmark or girly girl joke. Still the connections between the two are very interesting.

As for Monster Movie, the only reason why the music wasn't included in the contest was because it was not nominated either of the times nominations were open. While I would find it hard to vote for an instrumental piece in the latter parts of the contest, there are a few instrumental pieces I thought were particularly strong at setting the mood of the scene.

This contest has made me more aware of the music choices in TV shows too. I find myself tuning in when music is played to see if there was a purpose for it. I find that with some scenes it makes everything more enjoyable.

  13. Thank you, I wasn't aware of the general meaning of "Eye of the Tiger" in the USA and how Sam would then have mentioned it in a different way as I was interpreting it. This meaning goes better with the light, joking style of the episode in general: still a good choice for Dean to try to toughen up, but more in a joking sense that in a serious one.
Monster Movie's music is not only really good at setting the mood, but also at resembling the music style of old monster movies, fitting the specific style of the whole episode, which is absolutely brilliant in my opinion. This time I was really schocked by a few Dean lines, that I didn't remember. He presented himself to Jamie as someone with a mission from God, and I believe he was being honest about it. After 4.1-4.4 it seems he had finally assimilated this idea, and then 4.7 happened and suspicions about the angels' intentions began.
