Supernatural - Song-to-Scene - 2C - Poll
10 Jan 2013
Polls SupernaturalIt's time for the next set of polls in round 3 so take a break from the People's Choice Awards (yea, Supernatural wins Favorite Sci-fi/Fantasy Series and double woo hoo for winning Favorite TV Fan Following) and vote. Yesterday's winners included Back in Black (85%), Born to be Wild (57%), Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (54%), and Don't Fear the Reaper (75%). I am confident that if People's Choice had a category for Favorite Inanimate Object, the Impala would win hands down. After all, it will be Impala vs. Impala again in the next round.
Today starts the first of the impossible choices for me and it looks like it is only the beginning. Hope things are easier for you and as always, happy voting!

1. Dead Or Alive
ReplyDelete2. What A Wonderful World
3. Beautiful Loser
4. Rock Of Ages
1. Wanted Dead or Alive - "And if this is my last day on earth, I do not want it to be socially awkward. What I do want…" (turns on Bon Jovi) Best set up for a song-to-scene yet and one of my favorite Dean quotes. This is such a powerful song-to-scene in the same way that Mystery Spot and Changing Channels are strong episodes. It starts where you can laugh with them and then turns poignant faster than you can catch your breath. Tremendous silent acting from Jensen. The song choice was brilliant as was Sam calling Dean on it. After all, Dean made the Bon Jovi crack in Born Under a Bad Sign. This ties into the core of the brother bond and nicely adds the Impala via the song. It's the Winchester family (Dean, Sam, and Baby) riding into certain death together with that cocky attitude covering up a well of feelings underneath. The song underlines that.
ReplyDeleteKnight Rider Theme - For me this is a case where the song and scene fit too much. It lacks the creativity and effort of making something more than its parts. Unlike Wanted Dead or Alive, this scene could have easily been thrown out and the episode would have been fine, maybe a little less fun, but still great.
2. What a Wonderful World - Another perfect song-to-scene choice. The surface lyrics of taking joy in the simple things are evident in the scene as Dean relishes the chance to mow the yard, wave to a neighbor, and drink a beer. It combines with the earlier joy of being in his mom's presence and eating a sandwich she made. However there is a deeper meaning behind the song that also hints at deeper things at play in the episode. While the song is about simple joy it also makes a point about racism in America at the time it was written. This was before the Civil Rights movement. In the same way , the episode's joy was based on something far more sinister. In all ways this is the vastly superior choice for me, but it will not surprise me if it gets beaten.
Walking on Sunshine - Any random happy song from the 80's could have been played. Scratch that any upbeat song from any decade could have been played to the same effect. It was the dancing that made this scene not the song.
3. Beautiful Loser - This might be the best psychological fit as far as song-to-scene goes this round. It pretty much sums up Dean's feelings about himself, always losing. Dean himself understands that he cannot have it all - hunting, his brother, an apple pie life. Even when Lisa thought it was possible and was willing to try, Dean had his doubts.
Highway to Hell - If this were song-to-series, it would get my vote hands-down. However as a song-to-scene it's basically another driving song. If does tie into the next scene well with Sam arriving at his personal hell, but the scene in itself as far as the song goes is nothing special.
4. Both - This is my first impossible choice. Do I go with the short but absolutely dead on song-to-scene lyrics? Do I go with the intense scene made better by the song choice? In the end, I think I am going with Rock of Ages for the same reason I went with Wanted Dead or Alive. It simply took more effort to make this one perfect. I like how they edited the song to end with "burn it down to the ground." Still both of these choices are awesome and I will be good with either one advancing.
1) Really wanted to pick both. But Wanted Dead or Alive because there were
ReplyDelete....few more layers to the scene.
2) I officially hate this contest the rest of the way out. I really really want to pick both!
....But, I decided to pick What A Wonderful World
3) Finally an easy decision. Beautiful Loser song-to-scene this one has a lot
....more impact. As I said earlier if Highway to Hell had been played as the pilot ended, it
....would work in terms of song-to-scene, but as it appears, they're not taking the
....Highway to Hell they're taking it to Stanford.
4) ARGH! That was a short lived respite. I wanna pick BOTH! Okay, I'm going to
....pick the underdog. So, my vote goes to Rock of Ages
Have to go with "Wanted Dead or Alive"
ReplyDeleteAlthough I love the Kitt scene, this one is heavier and deserves to prevail.
X
What A Wonderful World. No problem here!

Beautiful Loser. I just like that song to scene too much but I'm sorry I can't vote the other one too.:(
X
Cold As Ice. Perfect fit for Ellen's iceberg moment!
Wanted Dead or Alive, this was such a sad scene with Dean trying to put on a brave face for Sam.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Wonderful World..easy choice.
This one was hard, but went with Beautiful Loser, even though Highway to Hell fit the scene, and it was starting their Hell trip with Jessica dying it could not beat Loser "you just can't have it all".
Another easy one, Rock of Ages
Talking about silent acting, I always tell someone that has never seen the series that they need to really watch, don't be cooking or washing dishes, you have to pay attention, because so much is not verbal and you miss some of the best acting.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Supernatural is at its best when they let the guys act instead overdo the dialogue. That's one of the reasons why I don't like the overabundance of sappy Impala chats. They didn't need the bond of manly crying to get there point across here. I wish they would just let Jensen and Jared tell the story with their body language and kill the emoangsting and the anvils falling like rain.
ReplyDeleteIt does not get any easier with the next set of polls. At least for me. Bad Company vs Well-Respected Man is a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteThis contest has made me realize just how awesome the music and sound editing departments are on SPN too. Unfortunately it also means many headaches in deciding what to vote for.
ReplyDeleteHighway to Hell may be the best song foreshadowing of the series.
