While the contest was closer yesterday, there were no real surprises. Bad Moon Rising and Knockin' on Heaven's Door each decimated their competition with 88% and 87% respectively. Don't Look Back and Spirit in the Sky eked into round 2 with 54% each. Somehow I think round 2 is as far as they will go. Today's choices are a little lackluster to me as far as songs matching the scene but there should be at least a couple surefire favorites. Let's just say the Impala is getting some love in the nominations today.
I am keeping the nominations for songs that should be on Supernatural but have not yet been open all week, so if you haven't had a chance to nominate please do so. The choices so far have been excellent. Also, there are links below to the contest rankings (called Contest Basics), the bracket order, and scene videos for today's choices. If you have a better clip for Back on the Road Again, please let me know so I can put it up. As always, happy voting!

Scene Videos: (Remember this is NOT favorite scene but which song matches the scene best)
Back in Black
Foreplay/Long Time - first 50 seconds until radio goes off
Rooster
Crossroad Blues
Born to be Wild
Cherry Pie
Smoke on the Water
Back on the Road Again - you can very faintly here the music in the back and it's not the whole scene, only about 20 seconds, but it was the best I could find
Basics: PLEASE READ IF HAVEN'T ALREADY.
The song-to-scene contest is not a popularity contest per se. It is about which song best fits which scene in tone and lyrics. Unlike a favorite song or favorite scene contest, you could very well end up voting for a song and/or scene you don't like simply because it matches the best. Ideally we are looking for a scene in which no other song could come even close to being as perfect. We are looking for a song that could not be played in many different scenes in the series. That one combination where the song and scene feel like they were completely in sync. So think on your vast music knowledge and if you can think of several songs that would work in the scene, toss that choice out. If you can think of several places where the song would work just as well or better in the series, toss that choice out too. This contest only works if we let our episode and music prejudices go for 3 weeks.
Also previouslies, outtakes, gag reels, promos, etc. are NOT scenes and therefore do NOT count. That cuts out Carry On Wayward Son completely, which has only been in the previouslies, the outtake of Jensen dancing to Eye of the Tiger (only the 30 seconds that were actually in the episode count), and the first part of Foreplay/Long Time, which started as a previously and segued into about 45 seconds of the actual episode.

None of these will get my vote for long in the contest even though I like quite a few of these scenes and songs.
ReplyDelete1. Back in Black - It's the Impala's theme song simply because this song fit the scene so well. The Impala was finally fixed and back on the road. Anyone looking for Impala porn need look no further than this scene. It's kind of poetic that the song that signaled a classic rock band's return from tragedy also symbolized a classic car's return for almost complete annihilation.
Foreplay/Long Time - This for me could have been just about any song on the radio. It is different though how it is a song about moving on when they are parked and then Sam gets kidnapped so they can't keep moving on.
2. Rooster - They did some editing of this song to fit the scene better and it works well for me. Some of the camera shots could have been tweaked a little but as far as song-to-scene goes this is probably the best fit for today. The song emphasizes Henricksen's relentlessness to get them but how the Winchesters also seem to get away in the nick of time. Very good choice.
Crossroad Blues - At first I thought there couldn't be a better match than Robert Johnson singing about the crossroads while we see the fictional Robert Johnson making a crossroads deal. I mean that's about as tight a song-to-scene as you can get and it still works really well for me. However, the song itself is a prayer to God to help him and that's about as far off the scene as you can get.
3. Born to be Wild - This one is virtually a toss up for me. Either one works. I chose Born to Wild because if any car has had a wild ride it is Baby. The opening line "Get your motor running" was perfect and I would say every day with the Winchesters is an adventure. I also love how as soon as the lyrics "explode into space" conclude the Impala explodes into the Sucrocrop sign. Again it also has great Impala porn but that's not a factor for song-to-scene.
Cherry Pie - I can easily see this one winning too. Dean's fantasy women do fit the spirit and lyrics of the song as both could have been rocker video chicks and this scene definitely reminds me of 80's MTV rock videos.
4. Neither - I've tried to make a case for both of them but I just can't. Back on the Road Again is about breaking up with a girlfriend. Smoke on the Water is about a fire. The riff at the beginning of Smoke on the Water is cool but it doesn't make a scene match. Again though it gives good Impala. Perhaps we need a song-to-Impala contest because Back in Black, Born to be Wild, and this one would definitely get my vote for that.
I liked their use of Bad Moon Rising.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great choice for the scene. The song still haunts me whenever it comes on the radio. I am pretty sure it will make it to round 3 although that one will be hard for it because it will likely go against Knockin' on Heaven's Door, another great song-to-scene.
ReplyDelete1. Back In Black - Perfect for return of Impala
ReplyDelete2. Crossroad Blues - Well it was perfect for the scene. I prefer the Rooster scene, but another song could have possibly done as well in that scene, so it was Crossroad Blues that won for me.
3. Born To Be Wild - Great for the return of the Impala in Season 7.
4. Back On The Road Again - Better than Smoke On The Water for its scene, though again, I prefer the Smoke On The Water scene.
One of these polls is gonna have Death's arrival in Chicago right?
ReplyDeleteThere is definitely a lot of Impala love in today's polls.
ReplyDeleteO Death is ranked #3. If you go to the link that says Contest Basics right above the video links, you can get a list of all 64 songs-to-scene in the contest. The bracket link right below it will show you about when it will come up in the contest and who it will go against. I'm pretty sure #3 is in the bottom right section so it will come towards the end of round 1.
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong. The Impala has a theme song but neither of the brothers does? :-)
ReplyDelete1. Back in Black
2. DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE! Please!!! I have to come back to this one. (LOL I tried peeking at the current votes to see if I could just go with the majority...an absolute tie. ) I'm going to be different this time and pick Crossroad Blues.
3. Cherry Pie - As much as I loved the Born to Be Wild scene when I first saw it...in the context of this contest....Cherry Pie worked better for me.
4. Dang it...I put it in my head that Back in Black is the Impala's theme song and all of these Impala focused scenes have failed in comparison. I don't know if that's fair to the other poll entries, but there you go. I have to go with Smoke on the Water.
darn...I can't take back my vote but I agree with your totally on pole number 4.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct, although Back in Black is her unofficial theme song. Bobby's unofficial theme song is The Gambler. We are going to have to work on getting the brothers their own theme songs.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that you were going to use the poll results to choose only to find them in a tie. I was going to do the same thing with the last poll but at that time both poll #2 and poll #4 were tied. I've never seen that happen. Will be interesting to see how these polls pan out. We may be in for two down to the wire wins.
Back In Black. Perfect song for the Impala.:)
ReplyDeleteX
Crossroads Blues-The music fits so well, even if the lyrics might non be a as pertinent so I'll go with it.

Born to be Wild. Go Baby go!.I love the song and I love the Impala. She' s the brothers' home and protector and she was great in that scene.. :)

Maybe Smoke on The Water's lyrics don't match the scene too well, but I loved Dean in that scene, The expression on his face when the knows that he is going to take her out and go back to hunting is spectacular. It's one of my very favourite scenes of the whole of season six.
Happy New Year, everybody :)
ReplyDeleteAnd my votes go to "Back in Black", "Crossroad Blues", "Born to be Wild" and "Smoke on the Water". Mostly because of Impala, of course. And for the "Rooster" versus "Crossroad Blues" - basically a coin flip, but in the end i preferred the good old blues.
Do I spy another hiatus contest in the works?
ReplyDelete:-) Could very well be. I'm loving the possibilities.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you too. I think it's funny that all of the Impala songs ended up being on the same day.
ReplyDeleteI think think next round is going to be hard when the Impala songs face each other.
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is, and it will be interesting to see how it will play out for them in further stages. And off the topic for a bit we go: i am quite jealous for the Americans, because You have such great cars - the "muscle cars" are always the ones that make me drool :) So the Impala was also a big plus for me when i was beginning to watch this show. And it still is.
ReplyDeleteBack in Black, Baby's song
ReplyDeleteRooster
Born to be Wild
Smoke on the Water
Can always import!
ReplyDeleteHard not too with the songs in the polls.
ReplyDeleteOnce i will be rich and famous, i will do that :)
