With a result that shocked absolutely no one, Renegade won by 92% in our first song-to-scene poll. This will be one of the 3 to beat. While the others didn't quite reach that margin, they were decisive victories too. Proceeding to the second round are Renegade, Man in the Wilderness (54%), All Out of Love (61%), and Silent Lucidity (64%). The polls today should have similar results. Things won't start getting hard for most until the next round.
Below are links to the episodes in this contest (Contest Basics link) and a printable bracket if you want to see what your favorites will be facing. Also there are video clips of the scenes in today's polls. I could not find one for Chaos Surrounds You and my first attempt at video capture came out stuttery. If you have a video clip of it or can make one, please let me know so I can add it. I also need clips for White Rabbit (Hunted), Back on the Road Again (Born Under a Bad Sign), We Gotta Get Out of This Place (A Little Slice of Kevin), and House of the Rising Sun (Roadkill). I have clips ready for the following but they also include other scenes so if you have the music part just by itself I'd love to use those instead. Clips needed: Ode to Joy (Hunteri Heroici), All Right Now (Skin), Burnin' for You (Hell House), and Feel Alright (Citizen Fang).
Also, for a little bit of fun before hiatus ends, we are going to take nominations for the song that has not been played on Supernatural yet but that you think would fit well. Thanks to Dovile for bringing the subject up in the comments yesterday. The song I'm in Love with My Car by Queen is indeed perfect for SPN. My choice since Meg appeared in season 1 is You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi. Let's face it. Almost everyone gives love a bad name on this show. It might as well have been Ruby's theme song in seasons 3 and especially 4. So what would your choices be? You can nominate up to 5 songs. Please also mention what you nominated in the comments section and why. If you have a scene in which they would have be perfect add that in too. It could be fun to see what music SPN fans would have chosen in classic scenes. As always, comments are joy and pass the hiatus time quicker. Happy voting!

The song-to-scene contest is not a popularity contest per se. It is about which song best fits which scene in tone and lyrics. Unlike a favorite song or favorite scene contest, you could very well end up voting for a song and/or scene you don't like simply because it matches the best. Ideally we are looking for a scene in which no other song could come even close to being as perfect. We are looking for a song that could not be played in many different scenes in the series. That one combination where the song and scene feel like they were completely in sync. So think on your vast music knowledge and if you can think of several songs that would work in the scene, toss that choice out. If you can think of several places where the song would work just as well or better in the series, toss that choice out too. This contest only works if we let our episode and music prejudices go for 3 weeks.
Also previouslies, outtakes, gag reels, promos, etc. are NOT scenes and therefore do NOT count. That cuts out Carry On Wayward Son completely, which has only been in the previouslies, the outtake of Jensen dancing to Eye of the Tiger (only the 30 seconds that were actually in the episode count), and the first part of Foreplay/Long Time, which started as a previously and segued into about 45 seconds of the actual episode.

1. Bad Moon Rising - Definitely. First time I ever heard the song and it just gives me the creeps now. It was perfect for the accident scene with the demon trucker.
ReplyDelete2. Both are good, but I voted One Way Or Another. Could have easily voted the other way though. Doesn't matter which one wins this one, I'll be fine with it.
3. Spirit In The Sky - Had a more eerie-ness to it with the empty town. There was more of an effect than Do You Love Me. But I wouldn't vote for them to be in final round really. Neither are that special.
4. Knockin On Heaven's Door - Works cause it happened in Heaven. This one too doesn't matter much to me. I know I wouldn't vote for either in finals. Got several that I know I'd vote for before.
I don't really have much ideas for songs as Supernatural is what introduced me to classic rock songs. I mean, I knew a few from dance parties, weddings and other TV shows/movies, but SPN introduced me to less commonly used songs such as Silent Lucidity, Round and Round, etc.
I did hear a song recently on Red Dog movie called "Eagle Rock" by Daddy Cool that reminded me of songs on the show - I could see it being used as an on the road song with shots of the Impala or something; I could see Dean playing it.
Bad Moon Rising - I would have voted for the blues song playing just
ReplyDelete....before Chaos Surrounds You....I love Crossroads Blues for many
....reasons not the least of which was it got me to get back into blues
....music. I grew up on the Mississippi (in Memphis) and spent my childhood
....dismissing it as my parents music. This ep ignited an appreciation
....of the blues. Chaos...functioned well for its scene but pretty much
....any hardcore or metal song would have done. (Had to pull out my
....DVDs to check it though. :-)
Don't Look Back - This was a difficult choice, but I went with this one
....because it feels so signature. It has the same feel as the other signature
....rock songs and that pushed it over the edge for me.
Spirit in the Sky - it worked for me...really enhanced the creep factor of
....the scene. Do You Love Me? says more about the incidental characters
....of the servicemen than the scene.
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - easy one. Worked both for Dean getting
....his bearings and when the fireworks went off. Just everything about
....this song in this moment worked for me.
Supernatural reintroduced me to some of the songs of my late middle school/early high school days. It was one of the things I liked best about season 1 and I definitely have spent more money on music since SPN started than I did in the 10 years before it.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate Crossroad Blues for the music too. It was different for the series but it really worked for me. I ended up checking out Robert Johnson's music because of it. There's a lot of good there.
ReplyDeleteBad Moon Rising. - I never found Chaos Surrounds You to be a song that actually fits the scene as well.
ReplyDeleteDon't Look Back - This was a hard decision because I thought both songs fit their scene.
Do You Love Me - To be honest, I didn't care for either of these songs. Neither really fit the scene, but I chose this one for the shock factor. It was the opposite of what I what I would have chosen. Somehow, it sticks in my mind. I guess a good song should do that.
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - This song was perfect for the scene.
Angel is a song I would have used in several different episodes where Cas aided Dean. I think it would have been good at the end of Swan Song.
Bad Moon Rising, when I hear this song now, it is this scene that plays in my head.
ReplyDeleteOne Way or Another fits the scene for me, even though it is Veronica Mars I think of when I hear it.
Do You Love Me, but either one will be fine with me. This one is just more shocking for the scene.
Knockin' On Heaven's Door, one of my favorite songs and I love this ep.
I have also bought more music because this show had it playing.
ReplyDeleteBad Moon Rising, definitely. What they had suffered up until then was just the beginning. The full face of that bad moon had still to show itself!
ReplyDeleteWhile we only got a short moment of Don't Look Back I think it fits the moment well, so I'll go with that.
X
Don't really think either of these songs fit the scenes but I'go with Do You Love Me because I liked that scene.
X
No doubt about this. Knocking On Heaven's Door. I loved both the scenes that it was played in and it fitted both so well.
X

As far as songs that I like for the show. The lyrics of The Special Two by Missy Higgins always makes me think of Sam and Dean. There is only one line that isn't quite suitable but the rest just reflects the brothers so well..
X
Then Soldiers by otherwise.
The brothers are soldiers against evil. It could even be the theme song for SPN, well the earlier seasons anyway.
Check this video out using Soldiers, was shown at one of the cons.

This is an interesting poll! Kudos to Dahne for this whole idea.
ReplyDeleteWhich Angel song are you talking about? I want to look it up. I'd love to hear it in the context of Swan Song.
ReplyDeleteI always think of the semi crashing the Impala when Bad Moon Rising plays too. It is a very uncomfortable feeling when I am driving.
ReplyDeleteDisqus is currently having issues for me. It won't log me in as me for the New Year's Resolution page so I'm just checking to see if it works here.
ReplyDeleteYep, disqus is having some disruption

Thanks for keeping me from feeling crazy. I hope you are having a great vacation.
ReplyDeleteSongs: Queen - I'm In Love With My Car (i don't think i need explain this choise :D), Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark (because it easy fit in scene where someone is attacked or killed by monster....), Guns N' Roses - Don't Damn Me (because lyrics. not 100 %, but enough to make me think about Sam and Dean habit not talk about what are on theirs mind....), Blue Öyster Cult - Sole Survivor (For me that song would have been fitted in the last minutes of season 7 last episode or discribe how Sam felt when Dean and Cas disapear (There walked a lonely man / Silent, mute, the only man / Not knowing how not knowing why / Was he the sole survivor / Why should he be alive / Breathing still while others died / And the only question / Why was he the sole survivor?)).
ReplyDeleteVotes:
1. Bad Moon Rising. Because when i hear song i remembing Winchesters in the chrash.
2. One Way or Another. Because fit scene, fate = stalker and with song situacion not looked so seriuos.
3. Do You Love Me? Because it was not expected, but songs spirit somehow mach flying bulets...
4. Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Not my favorite version, but is perfect for this scene.
I love the Soldiers song. That does absolutely sum up the brothers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. I have a new song for my iTunes account.
ReplyDeleteCan't take the credit. It came up organically when we were brainstorming different ideas for polls about a year ago. I like how it is a twist from the same old same old.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for bringing up the other songs that should be on SPN topic. I think we can have a lot of fun with it. I never thought of Sole Survivor but yet that fits.
ReplyDeleteI can not listen to this song without wanting to get up and dance. I have most of wolfPups videos on DVD and watch them on the big screen, she is so good matching clip with words of song.
ReplyDeleteShe is one of my favorite vidders too. I first started watching her vids in 2006 maybe and she was awesome even back then with the limited grainy footage.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your argumentation about your choices, it helps to perceive the scenes-to song relation in a new way, especially in your choice for poll 4.
ReplyDeleteI have the same choices except in poll 3. For me Spirit in the Sky sounds really well in that scene, even the lyrics, because it's about some people wishing to go to a good place when they die, and this is an abandoned place where lots of people have died. The joyful rythm is jarring in the deserted street, where signs of daily life are shown with nobody in sight, but this gives a really interesting framework to the Winchester's entrance in town and then you just see its origin, in the car radio, and Sam shuts it down, because the song does not belong here any more. The whole thing works just perfect for me.
On the other hand I just don't get that song used in The End, it's jarring and an awful song for killing people and it seems the soldiers use it on purpose, That's totally upsetting for me and I have never liked that at all, even if that effect was the reason it was chosen for, I just can't vote for it.
I think a lot of people agree with you for Spirit in the Sky. I expected it to win big time. I will say that I didn't really appreciate the song until it was played in that scene. Then I liked it a whole lot better.
ReplyDeleteI love this video, that I discovered some months ago and have watched over and over, and of course I also think "Soldiers" is a great song for the Winchesters.
ReplyDeleteI also visited then the vidder's webpage (http://wolfpupsden.us) and appreciate a few other videos in it. I don't know many popular songs in English but based on wolfpup's video I absolutely love "Storm" by Lifehouse, applied to Dean (http://wolfpupsden.us/songvids5.html: in YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pWXTZVaiqY&list=UUwZh9FrthEmsoqPzrE0Le3w&index=39). When he loses his Dad (and then even more fitting when he loses Sam) he feels so lost as if he were almost drowning alone at sea, and wishes that he could get John (or Sam) back. Then everything would be just alright for him.
I also love her Desperado when she has Sam & Dean as good things laid upon your table and at the end to let someone love you before it is to late and shows Sam, Dean and John hurt in the Impala. Of course since I am a huge fan of John I would love this vid. lol
ReplyDeleteShe has been a favorite of mine for several years, there are a lot of great vidders out there, but I would put her at the top, she is just so good matching song to clips and making a movie. Love her very funny one, Out of My Mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSChb_s8w7Y
ReplyDeleteThanks, I will. :)
ReplyDeleteKnockin' on Heaven's Door, because rocks!
