-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a typical Thursday overnight sweep for CBS care of its combination of red-hot The Big Bang Theory (12.7 rating/20 share), Two and a Half Men (9.4/15), sophomore Person of Interest (9.7/15) and recent entry Elementary (7.6/13). But one year earlier, former Thursday 10 p.m. CBS occupant The Mentalist was stronger at an 8.8/15.

Second overall was ABC with its line-up of canceled Last Resort (#2: 4.0/ 7), veteran Grey’s Anatomy (#2: 7.0/11) and compatible Scandal (#2: 6.1/11), which was 24 percent above year-ago occupant Private Practice (4.9/ 8 on 1/12/12). As a reminder, new ABC drama Zero Hour debuts in the Thursday 8 p.m. hour on February 14.

In time period premiere news, sitcom 1600 Penn lifted NBC to a season high at 9:30 p.m., with a 2.9/ 5 in the overnights. But that still ranked a distant third in the time period, and it was one-tenth of a rating point behind former occupant Up All Night on the year-ago evening (3.0/ 5 on 1/12/12). Comparably, retention for 1600 Penn out of The Office (#3: 3.5/ 5) was 83 percent.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was 30 Rock (#3: 2.8/ 5), which officially concludes on January 31, and a repeat of the pilot episode of 1600 Penn (#3: 3.1/ 5) from 8-9 p.m. At 10 p.m., Rock Center With Brian Williams, which moves to Friday at 10 p.m. on February 8, finished a distant third with a 2.9/ 5.

Elsewhere, Fox populated this second Thursday in January with Mobbed (#4: 2.3/ 4), hosted by Howie Mandel, and a repeat of Glee (#4: 1.3/ 2). And The CW aired The 18th Annual Critics Choice Awards, which finished fifth with a 1.7/ 3 from 8-10 p.m.

  1. Will Scandal ever be a winner for this guy?

  2. I think I'll have to wait for full tabeles to be posted. I compare these numbers with those from last week or before Christmas and the analysis from this guy doesn't make sense to me. And it seems like Scandal did pretty well last night. At least I hope so!

  5. Great episode of Elementary last night!!! As a grand fan of the novels, i actually enjoy this new vision... I'm hooked with it!

The way they aproached Moriarty was great... First Sherlock must face his agents before reach for him...

About Irene, i don't buy what they say happened to her...

  10. WOW. That's great for Scandal. If it wasn't preempted anywhere, it's a new high for this show. And I don't watch TBBT, but it's huge, congrats for them.

  11. Yay for Scandal, TBBT and Elementary!

  12. its likely DOA yes but i thought it would be even lower than that to be honest. that 8h30 repeat number is just 0.2 below its new episode. i dont care though, i am too happy about scandal and big bang

  13. OMG!!! Scandal!!!

  14. Holy fuck, TBBT. I don't like the show too much anymore (Thisclose to giving up on it), but that's awesome.

    And yay Scandal!

That's not good for 1600 Penn, which sucks, since I thought the second episode was way better than the pilot.

  15. TBBT O.O huge and POI did great too.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Did I see that right? POI beat Grey's in the 18-49? Or is this going to be like almost every other week where POI gets adjusted under in the final numbers?

    In any case, SQUEE!

  17. Really not important how POI did against Grey's. They are on different networks.

  18. Scandal does seem to have pulled itself into a moderate hit for the network. It'll probably survive given that all of the new dramas failed and few, if any, are likely to take off. I can't see ABC wanting to debut more new series next season than it did this season. (It'd have to dilute promotion for all of their new shows) SInce Private Practice is done and Body of Proof is also likely done, ABC will probably renew every other drama they renewed last year. They'll likely give a second chance to either Nashville or one of the midseason shows that doesn't completely bomb. (They usually give a second chance to one show no matter what. My guess is Red Widow has the greatest chance, although not much considering it's weakening lead-in) ABC definitely needs a new REAL hit.

And YAY for POI! Better than GA in both demo and overall. Amazing "series classic" episode last night for POI. Truly becoming one of the most exciting shows on TV. If only CBS gave it the post-superbowl slot, it might've turned in quite mammoth numbers. Elementary is just average in numbers and if it does get renewed, it's probably only because CBS has other shows doing worse.

  19. From what they said at the TCAs yesterday, it's likely Nashville will get a second season. They like the ratings, but not the demo, I believe.

  20. wow, tbbt is a monster!

  21. After seeing TBBT's ratings last week, I didn't think that that could be topped, but this week's totally surprised me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So happy that POI and Scandal are doing so great. OMG TBBT!

  23. "ABC will probably renew every other drama they renewed last year"
