That was pretty mediocre. The flashbacks didn't really add anything we didn't already know about Frankenstein and Whale's issue in Storybrooke was a lot more interesting.
Regina giving into Cora made sense with how alone and broken she is, even though it hurts to see. But it was messed up that once again, Rumple and Cora were trading for her.
Actually, it was really interesting that Rumple seemed to be even more of a monster in Storybrooke than he has in the past.
The flashback in this episode were kind of unnecessary, but it was nice to see. I like Whale and I'm glad he had his episode. It prompted Henry's thing about his story not being in the book at least. Cora can't not be manipulative for five seconds. I love it. I can't wait to see what happens. With them, with Gold and Emma's fieldtrip, and the outsider actually seeing magic. Loved it and made me excited for the rest of the season.
I thought it was a great episode. I liked seeing the part about Frankenstein and his brother. We only saw up until the returned with the heart, not the aftermath. Didn't know about the father either. Also the outside person coming in and he saw something. I don't get why Regina would even trust Cora, unless she is playing it up. I think Henry wants to be able to trust the people he loves and he doesn't trust Regina, but at the same time he knew deep down that Regina didn't kill Archie. Ummm how come Regina didn't know he was actually alive, they didn't even mention that at all. Should be interesting seeing Gold in the real world. Not liking that we have to wait three weeks though.
There were some good moments, but the writing was all over the place. I don't mind seeing more of Frankenstein, but I can't care about his story when there was the aftermath of a kidnapping + frame job to be dealt with. Where was Archie? Why was there not even a mention of him? Is this gonna be like the Daniel thing were Charming just "forgot" to clue everyone in and then non-chalantly dropped that piece of information half a dozen episodes later? The lack of continuation was striking and disappointing. The Cora and Regina story felt extremely rushed. It wouldn't have hurt anyone to introduce the Outsider one episode later and deal with the stories they still had to wrap up in more satisfying way.
All I could think about the moment that Cora/Rumple scene went down was "let's spin this off and make a Once Upon a Time - villains edition", cause man, that would be so much more awesome. And messed up. And creepy.
Way to go Charming, amazing job at not filling Emma and Snow in into what happened in town while they were away. Small things such as the Evil Queen's true love being brought back into life. No biggie.
But regardless, I think they finally managed to make Whale a likable character. At least he's not just the creepy guy who wants to date the nuns anymore.
I liked the episode except for the flashbacks with the Frankensteins. For some reason, they seemed random to me. Out of place. It was nice to get more insight into Dr. Whale, though.
The rest of the episode was great. Very interested to see how things with Greg unfold. I felt bad for Rumple when Belle wouldn't even concentrate on the teacup and instead threw it. And you'd think Regina would know by now to not trust and believe Cora but I guess Cora is just THAT manipulative.
Three weeks?!? Really, ABC? Two weeks from now, against the Super Bowl, I get. But next week there's that Hallmark movie. At 9. So what if there's no Revenge? The two shows aren't linked!
Maybe if the good guys spent more time looking for Cora and/or Regina, instead of sitting on their asses for hours at the hospital, a lot of future problems could be avoided.
It just annoys me to no end not even Henry cares one bit about Regina. He's too busy with his "real" family. Cora was right. "Love is weakness." It certainly hasn't helped Regina over the years.
The flashbacks didn't add much, but I thought it was a good episode none the less. It was Charmings, Emma and Henry lite so that definitely helped me enjoy it more.
- I was hoping Regina would have been able to hold out, though I'm not surprised she caved eventually... sad... - Cora and Rumple?! Huh... I am interested to see what went on there. - Rumple and Belle? Meh... I believe they have fundamental problems in their relationship. Contrived drama like memory loss doesn't add anything to their storyline for me.... - Whale has been checking Ruby out since day one. I'm not surprised there was some "good" tension between them. I wouldn't be opposed to that... (though I did like her with Gus too, before...) - I really don't think anyone is getting it: Hook's operating on a death wish. Or at least with complete disregard to his well being. He doesn't care to make it out of this thing with Rumple alive. That is so absolutely tragic IMO. - I'm hoping the outsider remains an outsider and just brings in the outsider aspect. First indications point that way and I'm glad. Wonder what he's up to.... - Also happy to see people weren't jumping the gun in letting the guy die, which is what the promos and eppy description had me thinking.
I feel like I need to re-watch. I think my issue was with the repetition of the Belle is afraid of Rumpelstiltskin beat too many times. Did anyone believe 'the outsider' was texting and didn't see the magic. :-) I'm torn about Hook. I think Emma has a lot more on screen chemistry with him than the guy playing (supposedly) Bae. (Which is a shame because I do like that actor. Trying to decide whether to root for Hook or not.
Some women find that their mothers can always get to them. To which I say...your mother knows where all your buttons are (and the backdoor access to said buttons) because she installed them. That was close to my mind as I watched Cora pick at Regina using Henry.
Loved that Whale was aware that most people think Frankenstein was the monster.
Whale's backstory, as well as his character development was awesome, easily the best part of episode. Its great to explore different effects loosing the memories had on different people. For some of them, the "curse" turned out a blessing. .And yes totally shipping Ruby/Whale now.
Henry's "who knows what else is in storybrooke from another worlds" seems like a setup for something VERY BAD - possibly a set-up for future villain(s)?
Regina's backstory just broke my heart, but I am disappointed that she gave in into Cora. That seems like sloppy writing at best and I hope she kicks her ass at some point.
Rumple's storyline devastated me, on the other hand, the moment when the cup was shattered...oh god :[
Agreed on Hook. He is self-destructive and does not see anything in his life beyond Rumple suffering - In hook's mind, if he has to pay his life for that, so be it, he has died a long time ago anyway, when Rumple killed his own wife.
I'm not surprised Regina caved either. So much of what Cora said to her is true; we even got to see a little scene with Henry's happy biofamilies to reinforce it. They mentioned how horrible it would be if Cora and Regina teamed up, but then stayed at the hospital for many, many hours (presumably leaving Henry alone). Their urgency didn't match up with their actions.
Yeah, you're right, Hook is operating on a death wish. I feel like all his sexual innuendos are just distractions. He hurts enough to be on a constant suicide mission. It's just really sad; especially when Gold was trying to kill him after everyone showed up. He still manages to make Milah's murder about Hook, like Milah was a possession that belonged to him, one that Hook stole and Rumple was within his rights to murder.
I do so hope Regina won't fall off the wagon permanently. Cora was deliciously manipulative, and despite having some hope that Regina wouldn't cave so easily, it was rather predictable she would've eventually anyhow. What or whom else did she have? Regina wasn't at all aware yet anyone knew she was innocent, nor did any of the ppl from Storybrooke at all reach out for her.
So she's at the bottom, broken, like Cora wanted her to be. I just hope she won't stay that way. It would be a cop-out to completely undo the progress she's made in the first half of the season. That being said, have at it ladies, it would be time Rumple got his ass kicked around a bit, despite the tragedy that is a memoryless Belle.
Good episode, although most of it felt like filler to me.
Loved all the Cora scenes - especially the Cora/Regina scenes, so heartbreaking (no pun intended) and dark, yet Lana and Barbara just light up the screen. :) All the references to "The Doctor" made me emotional again (I'm still not over that episode, dammit).
The Ruby/Victor moment was nice, but I I'm not too interested in that ship yet.
Gold's attitude was to be expected, made it all the more gratifying to see him finally get a taste of his own medicine. However, he got over the fact that he's a stranger to Belle pretty quickly. I guess it's better this way, I don't care for more Belle/Gold scenes anyway.
As for the Cora/Gold scene, that was just sick... So Cora is completely aware that Rumple manipulated Regina into enacting the curse for him? And she brought him a peace offering, instead of tearing him to shreds?? (could be a scheme, but it didn't seem that way) Mommy of the year just keeps getting more and more twisted. I so hope there's nothing more to that kiss!
If Charming did tell them everything, that could be an awkward conversation. How does "Oh yeah, Regina slept here once" sound? (rofl) And he's not even cursed anymore.
It certainly wasn't the best..... but it wasn't THE worst either thanks to a few scenes. I don't care about Whale but I wasn't expecting to really like his scenes in Storybrook :) However the flashbacks were totally useless and not interesting...I loved his conversation with Ruby about the curse because it's true that for some people the curse wasn't that bad
Cora was (crazy) awesome and Regina too and even if I'm kinda disapointed in her (but maybe she's faking?) I get why she always fell for Cora's manipulations :( She just want somebody to love her and Cora in a totally and creepy way do...
I was imagining a better scene between Cora and Rumple but it wasn't that great... and serioulsy I get why Cora took Hook's boat to come to SB because she really did bring a lot of usefull stuffs (and apparently people) with her :p
I like the Charmings at the hospital and the cute scene in the kitchen :) but damn when I think about it a lot of the episode made no sens :
- How the hell did the Charmings knew about the accident with Belle/Rumple/Hook/The stranger? Who warn them?
- They really search for Regina but didn't check her vault?
- I think we can say now that Emma's super power isn't really a super power it WAS just good instinct because again someone (whitout magic) lied to her
Anyone else notice that in the middle of the Cora/Regina car scene Regina stops the car (in front of a pub, I assume), there's a sign "The Rabbit Hole"? Hah, loving the Easter eggs! There were some in the dialogue as well, e.g. Cora addressing Regina as "sweetHEART", then later in the car telling her that the Charmings probably see her as a snake (Adam and Eve, original sin?).
Umm, did I miss anything?? I don't remember him ever giving her a gun. O.o He almost shot Daniel with his own gun, but after Regina's heart-wrenching pleas, he relented and left her in the stables to talk to Daniel.
Finally got to meet Gerhardt! -And since Victor mentions "Earth", it does seem to be that he is from The Land Without Magic's Past!
There were so many fun lines (Nice to have some more Lee Roy!) and Greg's Star Wars Ringtone was a nice touch, considering the family saga presented in Once expands as DarthRumple is Regina's father! (some of you guys were spot on with that theory!)
The hand print art work reminded me of Fringe, and I almost thought that Regina was going to tell (fake) Henry, that he is her most favorite thing, but alas she didn't...
I kind of was glad Ruby reached out to Whale (who might very well be related to The Shepphards :p - nice winks to drinking, father's disapprovals,a father's death, monsters, and needing to "fix" things!) I think Ruby and Whale could make a nice couple.
Obviously, I felt bad for Rumple/Gold...but it was interesting to think he has been in The Land Without Magic before!
Love the winks back at old horror movies (I keep thinking about the black and white Felicity episode and Fringe's winks at Film Nior)
Rumple and Cora? Really? Wow! I want to see the scene when Rumple held Regina as a baby as he mentioned to Regina when they first met.
and the two idiot's." BEST LINE IN THE ENTIRE SHOW! Hahaha.
Lana is flawless. When she was speaking to her mum for the first time in years, her voice went back to the days when she hated magic. She deserves a standing ovation for her role as Regina.
I found the stuff without Whale's background very good especially Cora and Regina pairing. Ruby and Whale, Belle and Mr. Gold. I really felt for Rumpel when Belle smashed that chipped cup. I loved how they are going to find Bae!
Yeah was my bad I thought he was gonna give her the gun at first, but indeed he was just going to use it himself. Still that was an oddity itself he just left her by herself there.
Oh, that's alright. It was quite an intense scene and I'm so not impartial when it comes to Regina/David (despite all the show's efforts to kill my fav ship). I thought I might have misread it myself. I completely agree with you, the "villains" are more consistent and logical in general than the "good guys". Since we're discussing Charming, last season he challenged just about everyone to kill him because he wasn't afraid to die, and that tendency hasn't changed much this season. For instance, in 2x02 he went to Regina's house with his sword after learning she had magic. I can't help laughing when David says "Anything you conjure, I can fight" and Regina pushes the blade away with annoyance. Well, he may be a fighter and a lover, but he's not much of a thinker, imho. And yeah, it was odd that he just left Regina in the stables. If he was so concerned about Daniel, he should have returned, and it doesn't seem like he did.
The episode was very meh for me. While I liked certain parts of it, such as all the Regina scenes (it broke my heart seeing her so sad like that) and the Ruby scenes, the frankstein storyline is just one of my least favorites. It is not that I hate it or anything, it just doesn't do anything for me. I always like Once though, so even a weaker episode is not a bad episode.
I forgot to add: Emma is a terrible, useless sheriff.... Even for Storybrooke standards....
And conveniently the "lie detecting" super power failed her again... either have it work or not. Or at least just have her admit she can simply intimidate people into believing she can tell. But for the love of anything you hold holy stop pretending she's got the special "magical" ability to tell when someone is lying to her only when it serves the story...
It was last episode where I fully realised it too, that he's pretty much on a suicide mission. (Self-destructive was the word I was looking for originally BTW. Thank you for that!)
Well Henry made an off hand comment that Granny was watching him so whatevs about that...
But other than that, yeah.... the thing is Cora did make some good points and I do get why Regina caved still it was sad to see her like that.... And to have it be supported by what the "good people" were or more accurately weren't doing.
It's all a front with Hook... he's sad and angry and has nothing left to lose and isn't measuring collateral damage, himself included.
~"He still manages to make Milah's murder about Hook, like Milah was a possession that belonged to him, one that Hook stole and Rumple was within his rights to murder."~ See here's my thing about Gold. Let me start out by saying that I find the character fascinating, and I do understand where he is coming from. I love watching him, but I don't like him, and even though I do "get" him, I don't sympathize with him. He's brought everything on himself. He was weak and a coward, but that wasn't the issue. That he was also selfish and refused to take responsibility for his actions has always been the problem.
And I will never not credit him for not loving Belle or Bea, but that he's not willing to sacrifice and make compromises for the people he loves, and yet demands everything to be given to him and blames everyone else for his problems and mistakes is what has him beyond redemption for me.
Oh yeah I totally understand why she did it, but it was still heartbreaking... I do wonder what they're gonna bring on Gold too. Though with Cora having made a deal with Rumple I don't know if there's not another scheme at work...
Ha, I love that that analysis of Gold. He's one of my favourite characters and I get where he's coming from, but at the same time, I'm getting rather antsy for him to start losing things.
I totally believe he loves Bae and Belle but you're right, he's never willing to sacrifice or make compromises, they have to love him on his terms. It's very interesting to me that almost every issue he faces is of his own making, whereas everything everyone else faces is ALSO of his making.
Who wrote this? The quality of the dialogue was a significant step up. The idea of having a B&W movie land that somehow coincides with the real world, the Star Wars ringtone, etc, etc, are just too preposterous to me. What's next Darth Vader vs The Dark One? Please stop expanding the universe without a darn good reason. For a filler ep it was what it was, but the CGI was better and so was the dialogue and characterization. And that was enough to make me not hate the Frankenstein crap as much as I did when they first brought it in.
The most unintentionally hilarious moment: Emmy's lie-detector superpower strikes again! LOL! Best part of the episode: Cora & Regina stuff. Worst part(s) of the episode: Frankenstein's backstory in Land Without Color.
Regarding the Land Without Color: For me, the onscreen colorlessness transcended into a colorless/lackluster script for these parts too. Sadly, the most uninteresting/unappealing of the "Lands" of Once Upon a Time so far. I even found Beanstalk "Land" more entertaining.
Don't forget, Henry wasn't all that happy with Regina. That's why Mary Margaret gave him the fairy tale book, because he was depressed. Then when he read it and started figuring things out, Regina took him to her tame therapist so Archie could convince him that he was going nuts (known as 'gaslighting', when you try to convince a sane person that they are insane). We also saw her lie to him and leave him alone at home so she could make a booty call on her sex slave.
Emma was all set to leave Storybrook and changed her mind when she saw how Regina treated Henry.
Regina may love Henry as much as she is able to love, but that's not enough for a child. She's not as toxic a parent as Cora is but she's not Mother of the Year either.
Why should Snow or Charming care about Regina? She's tried to kill them both a number of times, including after Snow saved her life. Why should the other people in the town care about her? She forced them all into Storybrook and made them amnesiac fools for 28 years.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
That was pretty mediocre. The flashbacks didn't really add anything we didn't already know about Frankenstein and Whale's issue in Storybrooke was a lot more interesting.

I liked it! Kinda ship Ruby/Whale now, tbh, because they had a little bit of chemistry.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe Regina believed Cora, but I hope she's just playing her.
The Charmings were cute. I wonder what the hell Ethan Embry's character is doing.
Poor Belle and Rumpel. I hope she gets her memory back soon.
Dang it, I forgot it was on today! :( Oh well, guess i'll just have to watch it online tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteRumple and Cora? Really? Wow! I want to see the scene when Rumple held Regina as a baby as he mentioned to Regina when they first met.
ReplyDeleteand the two idiot's." BEST LINE IN THE ENTIRE SHOW!
ReplyDeleteSomeone called 911 about the accident otherwise why would the sheriff and EMS respond? I suspect is was Mr. Gold.
ReplyDeleteYes the foreshadowing of other worlds is very strong especially interesting how Henry picked that kernal up and no one else did!
ReplyDeleteYeah was my bad I thought he was gonna give her the gun at first, but indeed he was just going to use it himself. Still that was an oddity itself he just left her by herself there.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's alright. It was quite an intense scene and I'm so not impartial when it comes to Regina/David (despite all the show's efforts to kill my fav ship). I thought I might have misread it myself.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, the "villains" are more consistent and logical in general than the "good guys".
Did episode didn't really do anything for me, except break my heart a few times :'(
ReplyDeleteI'm actually happy that we have a break
The episode was very meh for me. While I liked certain parts of it, such as all the Regina scenes (it broke my heart seeing her so sad like that) and the Ruby scenes, the frankstein storyline is just one of my least favorites. It is not that I hate it or anything, it just doesn't do anything for me. I always like Once though, so even a weaker episode is not a bad episode.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add: Emma is a terrible, useless sheriff.... Even for Storybrooke standards....
ReplyDeleteAnd conveniently the "lie detecting" super power failed her again... either have it work or not.
ReplyDelete(Self-destructive was the word I was looking for originally BTW. Thank you for that!)
Well Henry made an off hand comment that Granny was watching him so whatevs about that...
ReplyDeleteBut other than that, yeah.... the thing is Cora did make some good points and I do get why Regina caved still it was sad to see her like that.... And to have it be supported by what the "good people" were or more accurately weren't doing.
It's all a front with Hook... he's sad and angry and has nothing left to lose and isn't measuring collateral damage, himself included.
~"He still manages to make Milah's murder about Hook, like Milah was a
possession that belonged to him, one that Hook stole and Rumple was
within his rights to murder."~
See here's my thing about Gold.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder what they're gonna bring on Gold too. Though with Cora having made a deal with Rumple I don't know if there's not another scheme at work...
Ha, I love that that analysis of Gold. He's one of my favourite characters and I get where he's coming from, but at the same time, I'm getting rather antsy for him to start losing things.
ReplyDeleteI totally believe he loves Bae and Belle but you're right, he's never willing to sacrifice or make compromises, they have to love him on his terms.
ReplyDeleteThe most unintentionally hilarious moment: Emmy's lie-detector superpower strikes again! LOL!
ReplyDeleteBest part of the episode: Cora & Regina stuff.
Worst part(s) of the episode: Frankenstein's backstory in Land Without Color.
Regarding the Land Without Color: For me, the onscreen colorlessness transcended into a
ReplyDeletecolorless/lackluster script for these parts too. Sadly, the most
uninteresting/unappealing of the "Lands" of Once Upon a Time so far. I
even found Beanstalk "Land" more entertaining.
ReplyDeleteEmma was all set to leave Storybrook and changed her mind when she saw how Regina treated Henry.
