I really hope they have a season long plan. Yes, it's a good show, I'm going to be tuning in to watch it, but let's not forget that this IS Fox. They're trying to change, but it's still in the back of my head.
I was truly on the edge of my seat the entire hour. I love the premise, and I love the fact that Fox has lifted the reigns and have pretty much given Kevin Williamson ( Scream ) freedom to do/write whatever he wants. That's a rare thing nowadays.
Ryan and Carroll had such good chemistry. Actually, everyone that was in a scene with Kevin Bacon had great chemistry. But characters that stood out were definitely Ryan and Carroll and Ryan and Carroll's wife. This role really filled like it was made for Kevin Bacon. I know that line is thrown around alot but, he just gelled into the role of Ryan Hardy expertly. Natalie Zea ( Carroll's wife ) did an impressive acting job as well. Very impressed by her. Actually, everyone on screen did a good job. But obviously, the show-stealer's were Bacon and Purefoy ( Carroll ).
I was really shocked by the big "surprise" of the episode involving Shannon ( sorry, my love of Lost is inevitable ) errr Sarah Fuller. As well as the surprise/shock of the babysitter and homosexual neighbors.
I really loved the Edgar Allen Poe references and am thrilled that we will surely be getting more of them!
The script was sharply written with good dialogue and great plot twists that I'm sure not everyone saw coming. Kevin Williamson did a fantastic job writing this ( shocker ), and I can't wait to see what else he has up his sleeve. The Following was a suspenseful, scary, and shocking hour of television that was beautifully done.
With American Horror Story ending Wednesday ( sigh... it's hands down my favorite show and guilty pleasure ), The Following is absolutely going to be taking it's place!
I had very high expectations for this show, but I am truly blown away by how much I loved it. Monday night can't get here soon enough!
Ok, overall it was Saw meets Hannibal, exactly what I thought it would be. That said it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I still doubt the sustainability of this show but having only a half season would be a good way to truly judge that.
Impressive pilot. It was gripping, suspenseful, creepy and unpredictable. The writing is terrific with a several surprising plot twists, and Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy are excellent in their roles. Personally, I don't think I'll be able to stomach this kind of plot for a full 14 weeks (I actually had nightmares after one episode!), but for people who like this genre, they won't be disappointed. Despite the plot's disturbing nature, I still gave it an "awesome" rating. BTW, I love James Purefoy and wish he'd stop playing the bad guy!
If children are of the age that they are likely to be affected by this, giving the time that the show airs shouldn't the children be in bed? How can parents allow children to be up watching tv so late?
Very impressive pilot. Kevin Bacon and especially James Purefoy were perfect in their roles... I was kind of disappointed that Maggie Grace's character died.. i thought she would be a regular. Nevertheless that was awesome for me.
One of the strongest pilots of the 2012/2013 season.
I do have a minor issue with how young the agents are that were assigned to the Carrol case. I would expect more senior agents on such a media case. However it seems like all shows have these 20-somethings as field agents heading cases so I guess it is par for the course....
I really enjoyed the pacing and tone of the pilot. They did not try to force feed the tension and instead let a well-written script unfold organically. It was intense and dramatic enough on its own!
Not many network shows have the nerve to be this dark and gritty. There was no buddy humor montages, no sarcastic friends... I really appreciated the show taking itself seriously and not watering down the drama or the dialog.
I hope they can keep up the tone, pace and quality of the pilot as the season goes on. It was a brilliant start!
Interesting factoid: - The "Puppy Killer" played the E-String Strangler on Veronica Mars. t might be a bit unsettled to always be type cast as a serial killer.... Just saying! XD - Another fun fact is that episode featured Aaron Paul as a antisocial voyeur oerv named Eddie Laroche. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m99ly21dmk1r1adkko1_500.jpg
Let me say that at 8:59 pm exactly I changed the channel from The Following to the Channel 9 news simply because I refuse to watch Kevin Bacon or contribute to any positive ratings of the show. Did I mention I can't stand Kevin Bacon?
I was amazed at just how flawed they made his character. I'm used to the lead being flawed but not to the extent of having gone to high school with me!

Definitely on the fence about this one. James Purefoy was very compelling and if he can stay the creepy, smart, charismatic psycho it will carry the show past some of its less than stellar underpinnings. The Poe stuff was cringeworthy, but where it felt like Castle + Criminal Minds I kinda liked it. All pilots require a certain adoption of worldview and premise, so until I see where they go, I'm withholding the view that is stymied by trite serial killer tropes (killing puppies and making "art" and no one anywhere should have been surprised he'd go after the victim that "got away" you don't have to worship Poe (WTF?) to not like unfinished business) and lacks the potential to rise above that into compelling yet disturbing interesting television.
I adored it. I admit it was a bit disturbing at times (and I do watch AHS), not so much the images, but more the content (which is why I had to stop watching criminal minds years ago, it was too much). But I will stick with it. I am very curious to see what they will do with each episode. Will each episode be dedicated to a follower? They could get tremendous guest stars if they invested on it. But the writing was very compelling. I was very invested in fuller and sad to see her go. Also, did not see the twists with the gay couple or the babysitter coming, at all.
Thank you FOX for the heads up....14 shows 14 weeks in a row.....maybe FOX learned from all this hiatus crap and what it does to fans and ratings. Great show .....great acting...love the POE background. Although serial killers are scary business .....it is the dialogue between Bacon and Purefoy that is magnetic. They have good chemistry. BTW I have loved Purefoy since "ROME". Very gritty show not for the faint of heart......fast moving too!
Hmmm....I´m still not sure about this. It was good enough that I´m gonna watch next week, but not good enough to make me excited. The actors did a fine job, but it all felt a bit rushed to me.
Loved it. Very intense with outstanding performances by KB and JP. I too am curious if this show can maintain the feel over a long period of time and am thinking this is one of those shows that is suited for the shorter 13 ep seasons to keep the writing and stories tight and focused. REally great start and loved that that Fox seemed to give K Williamson a lot of leeway with the really heavy, dark, and gory feel. I approve and will be onboard for the long haul.
The last time I was so scared to watch a full episode of a tv show was with an episode of Teen Wolf's 2nd season.Up until now that is.The Following topped that!Amazing thriller!
The other thing that will be interesting is to see how the Followers play out.
In theory if they continue to have intriguing and disturbing Followers I think it can work for a more typical 20+ episode season. However, I think it might be safer to have stronger episodes centered on the stronger ideas they have for Followers and have less episodes....
I hadn't read that, good to know! I'd be happy with a shorter season each year. I prefer shows like that honestly. Well, as long as they do not go to the UK extremes like 3 or 6 episodes as a season XD
Just stop by to say it was a very nice Pilot! (and way more graphic than I expected! -I noticed FOX kept showing their PG14 "viewer discretion advised" warning during every commercial break!)
I loved the acting, the story, the characters. I was a little squeamish and found myself changing the channel at the some of the more gruesome spots and then having to turn back to see what happened next. It's a yes for me, even knowing that I will have to turn the channel at various points in each episode. It is very compelling.
Wow. That's all I can really muster up. The pilot alone went to some pretty dark places. It's going to be really interesting where they take the show from here. I really hope it does not turn into a procedural. That would be a great disappointment after a truly brilliant and seriously disturbing pilot.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteLol. I think you mean Maggie Grace. Maggie Smith would make things a little different.
ReplyDeleteAwful: How can parents allow der child to be part of a sick idea like this show?
ReplyDeleteImpressive pilot. It was gripping, suspenseful, creepy and unpredictable. Ha, I have the same feeling about anything on Fox, they do have the rep of cancelling way to fast...Firefly & Dark Angel anyone?
ReplyDeleteWOW, I was white knuckling it the whole time..WTG Kevin, much better than Secret Circle.
ReplyDeleteI read the only way they could get Kevin Bacon to do it was for the shorter season. I like the shorter seasons and no breaks, keeps the story moving.

ReplyDeleteLove it awesome show
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty intense, I'm definitely going to be tuning into this for the foreseeable future.
ReplyDeleteConsidering Maggie Smith was listed as "Starring," I was surprised Fuller died.
ReplyDeleteOverall, though, a fantastic pilot. I really hope that flashbacks will show more of the Ryan/Joe relationship, and why it is so intense.
