For episode #218 of Once Upon a Time, a guest role (preferably with an Asian accent) is being cast: The Healer. He's 60, mystical, powerful, helpful to those in trouble, and makes predictions that can be difficult to understand.

Wow. That's not a racist stereotype at all.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Takei?
ReplyDeleteDoes he give electro-shock therapy to see if someone is claimed and make home grown herbal poison pills?
ReplyDeleteMost likely flashback to Mulan's past.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, how else are they to ask for an older Asian Mystic? It's not like Asian philosophy isn't considered mystical.
ReplyDeleteYes because designing character after chinese folklore to be most likely used in a background of another character from chinese folklore, is totally racist.
ReplyDeleteStereotypical ? Yes. But calling that Racist is REALLY reaching, considering the whole wuxia genre is full of characters like that.
He could pull it off, however I have a VERY hard time imagining him in such a role, lol.
ReplyDeleteHappy to know someone other than Rumple might be able to get a glimpse at the future.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHAH
ReplyDeleteHow could you not? You used the word "racist" in your comment? So now are you admitting to bating?
ReplyDeleteYa! I like it too! There is also suppose to be a little girl seer in one of the upcoming episodes! I like the possibility of either leveling the playing field, and/or the prospect on either collective foresight or contradictory foresight!
ReplyDeletethis season seems to be setting up the idea that while Rumple IS, somewhat a big mastermind, he, too, like everyone else is but a gear in far bigger machine (which was already somewhat hinted via Blue Fairy knowingly or unknowingly, causing this whole thing).
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be this somewhat mythical force surrounding Emma's lineage with a lot of things being out of Rumple's control.
Given how they labeled the role, I think we'll be seeing Mulan and Aurola in this episode seeking an audience with this guy as part of their quest to restore Philip's soul.
ReplyDeleteWow. So posts calling something racist are deleted and racist commentary is posted here. I guess we know what kind of place this is.

The casting call is racist. What YOU'RE offended by is being called on your BS, which is indeed ON topic and relevant.
ReplyDeleteHow is it off-topic to call what is actually posted in the post racist? That's the definition of ON TOPIC.
ReplyDeleteI'm not exactly going to flag this post as racist now am I, because it's the show that releasing it. However, the deleting a comment stating that the casting call is racist IS pretty problematic.
Ok that's your opinion. Just leave it now. You've had your say.
ReplyDeleteUm. No, I haven't. You deleted it.
ReplyDeleteI can understand that might be a possibility, but I didn't see it play out up until now. Everything that happened so far is Rumple's making. He designed the curse, he created the Evil Queen so she would enact it, he used Snow and Charming to put true love into the mix and bring magic to Storybrooke, he is using Emma to go to NYC and find his son, etc. Maybe he is a pawn in someone else's game, but so far he's been the one setting the rules.
ReplyDelete"just leave it?" holy condescending please sit down and shut up i don't want to hear about it batman. just lost so much respect for this site.
ReplyDeleteYes, I definitely get the same vibe. In the first season Regina was introduced and developed as the main "villain", while Rumple went from a madman in the pilot to the mastermind behind the Dark Curse in the finale. This season they've really brought him to the forefront, but I fully expect the second season's finale to reveal a bigger menace.
ReplyDeleteI generally agree about Rumple via Dark One, but we have also seen apposing forces too, like August seemingly playing "course correcter"! We don't really know for sure who he is working for in relation to his reasoning of getting between Emma and Neal, outside of possible guilt for not doing what he was told to in the first place (Blue Fairy's orders)...but it seems like there are a lot of pieces on the board...
ReplyDeleteAdd me to the list who thinks this will involve Mulan (possibly Aurora & Phillip)...
ReplyDeleteI hope not...:-( That was the first thing I thought of. He doesn't have an accent though. Wonder if any of the priests from Carradine's Kung Fu are still around and acting?
ReplyDeleteI think that if you're expecting the Blue Fairy to have a plan, you're going to be disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a fair argument that the Blue Fairy was a the one helping to lead the others to find a way to free themselves against the curse and also someone who has created great opposition to Rumple...
ReplyDeleteI think it's anyone's best guess how far or how little the Blue Fairy's agenda goes, but there could be something thematic that all magic will lead to goodness, eventually, which could in theory be her long term goal (or extent of her knowledge...she may believe The Land Without Magic is a blessing), should she be on the side of good. However her Storybrooke counterpart name could allude to darkness, as Mother Superior might relate to something foreign, alien, and/or controlling such as 'Mother Ship', or something like Cold War Russia... And it could then go either way giving her an Land Without Magic occupation that represents the top of a Theological hierarchy...
It's also an unfair assumption that you would think that I would be disappointed whether the Blue Fairy has a bigger plan or not. It's just an idea I think the show started to introduce in season one. I do not watch the show for the Blue Fairy alone. IMO they have really kept Mother Superior lite, but yet present in the background. I find her one of many interesting characters to think about and I think it's a mistake to forget her simply because season 2 has moved Cora and Killian front and center.
I'm really sorry, but this is racist. It's perpetuating a stereotype and I'm disappointed, but not surprised. OUAT rarely treats POC well.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason they need an Asian actor would be to go along with the Mulan storyline. What if Mulan wasn't Asian? Now that would be racist.
